Service was alright we waited about 20 mins for the lady to take our order. My husband ordered the steak shrimp combo which was like 45$ and I got a steak (I don't remember what kind) 35$ for the price we were expecting a lot of food and when our plates came out we were quite disappointed. (the steaks were delicious don't get me wrong) but after we both finished eating my husband and I were both still hungry, which is not good after spending as much as we did. I would definitely suggest getting an appetizer because the main course wasn't enough. All the steaks come with mashed potatoes for the price they should add a salad in with that. I would rate the food a 5 service a 2 and price a 1 if we would have had more food the price would have been fine. But no one wants to spend 110$ and still be hungry after. Gave this place another chance after hearing it has improved. And it has! YAY I'm so happy! I've always liked the locale and the ambiance. We sat at the bar, had great service from the bar tender. He made me a Cosmo...which honestly at first, I thought was , meh, OK. I ordered a second one and he mentioned that he felt the cranberry juice may have been too strong in my first drink( this is without me saying anything negative about the first one) and so the second was perfect. We had the....sweet potato fries and yes it was just as good as I wanted them to be! The dinner dishes....salmon and the pesto pizza were GREAT! My last dinner on my trip to O'ahu was at this lovely restaurant in Kailua where my sister lives. The blackened ahi tuna was served over a bed of orzo and was perfectly spicy ~ the mahi mahi was the peace del giorno and was also delicious. We also split the mussels arrabiata and linguine which was zesty and very tasty. We enjoyed the meal with a nice Prosecco and the wine list was impressive. They should change their name to Salt.. Upon entering, restaurant was not even busy and it took a few minutes for anyone to even acknowledge us. We were meeting friends and weren't sure whose name the reservation was under, and the girl says "Nope, they're not in here" and walked away. After ordering and receiving our entrees, several of us commented how salty the meals were, yet all they did was make excuses and blow it off. I didn't finish my dinner, and no even offered a takeaway box. Took awhile to flag aomeone down to ask for one. I went here last night with a group of about 9 people. I was looking forward to dinner here because my recent dinners at the original formaggio in market city in kaimuki have been fantastic. This was not the case here. Maybe because the place was packed, but the service was pretty bad. First off, I was not asked if I wanted anything to drink aside from water and when I kept trying to flag down our server I was pretty much ignored. Second, I was not told of any specials of the night, neither was our party. We had to ask about the daily specials. Third the plates from our appetizers seemed to be piling up on our table, they should have been cleared. Another thing that bothered me is how they kept taking the menus off our table when I really wanted to sample their different wines. How am I suppose to order if I don't even have the menu with me to see their different wine selections? Moving onto the good part and why I gave it 3 stars when a friend told me I should rate it 2 1/2 stars. The food was pretty good and our party was pretty satisfied with our meals. First the APPETIZERS: - Calamari ($9.99) was decent. The sauce had a nice little kick to it. - Steamed clams w/garlic bread ($13.99) was definitely my favorite appetizer. Delicious! DINNER: For dinner I ordered the - Pesto & pancetta pizza ($13.99) which was very tasty and good. A must try! Some things that the other people I was dining with included the - Crab crusted salmon ($25.99), this was a tad bit salty, but overall good. - Lobster club panini ($16.99), which was very good ** TIP: substitute regular french fries for the truffle fries because they are really great! - Kobe burger panini ($15.99) had some mixed reviews. - Lobster mac & cheese ($21.99) everyone seemed to like. Towards the end of the night when it started to slow down, our server seemed to pay closer attention to our table and her service seemed to pick up, but I was still a little turned off by her service in the beginning that when she asked if I wanted another glass of wine to drink, I declined. Maybe I am just spoiled by the excellent and superb service that I always get at the formaggio in market city, but really, that is the reason why from now on when I want to dine at formaggio again, I probably will not be returning at this location. Market city formaggio is the way to go!! Plus they have something that the kailua location does not have which is their wild mushroom pizza, that alone is something that tops formaggio in kailua by far!! read more

I've visited Formaggio Grill about four times (and will continue to do so). The food and service is always outstanding, my favorite dishes being the prime rib and beef bourguignon. The reason for three stars is due to the fact that every time we come here to eat they were out of so many wine options that I resort to asking the waiter/waitress: 'So what DO you have? Bring me a glass of that'. I would understand maybe the first visit, but when its consistent with each one...there's a problem. Please stock the bar with more wine...I want to pay you to drink it!!! Pretentious, over-priced, shopping center restaurant with little to recommend unless you are into upselling, alcohol-pushing, but ultimately inattentive waiters. It was humorous to watch the greedy eyes of our waiter go crestfallen when informed we didn't want a second round of drinks. It took another 50 minutes for our food to arrive and when told it had been 50 minutes he immediately challenged that estimate saying it was closer to 45 minutes. For a steak cooked medium rare and prime rib that was already cooked when we sat down. Quite the dick. But for only $3.00 more you can have sweet potato fries. Ooooh! Only $3.00. read more

This was a last minute reservation for Mother's Day and we were not disappointed. We started our meal with garlic cheese bread and my daughters said it was the best cheese garlic bread ever! The service is getting slower and the prices keep going up. I used to go a couple times a month but not anymore because I have a new favorite place in Kailua. I went back recently and the service was SLOW. I saw a couple wait 15 minutes and never even get a hello so they walked. I joined people who were already there and ate their food since I couldn't order anything without a waitress. I did get a beer so 2 stars instead of 1 AND the whole time the owner (wes) was there at the door. You'd think they would hustle with him standing there. Had an awful experience. Came an hour before closing and they would not sit me and another guest. It was a Sunday, only two tables were filled. They had a full staff and yet instead of coming over and saying they don't seat people an hour before closing, the waiters all hid in the corner laughing, avoiding the fact that there were people. I love this place. It can get a little loud on the weekends but I've never been disappointed with the food. It's rich, homey and full of flavor. The portions are large as well so my teenage nephews have always gone away with a full belly! My favorite is the chicken rollatini but the chicken and beef "hot pots" are also delish! read more

This place was so good! Can't believe they only have 3 stars! We are visiting Oahu and are staying in Kailua. All restaurants close really early so we were happy to see this one open until 9:30. Nice little steakhouse/seafood/Italian place in Kailua. They had a nice wine selection for a fairly small restaurant. The owner was very kind and accommodating and our waiter was very attentive. We all had a pasta variation dish and everything was cooked perfectly. I rarely leave reviews, but this needs to be said....overpriced and overated. My wife ordered the crab crusted salmon and I had the fish tacos. First, my idea of 'crusted' is that there is a crust. This was a dollop of crab meat on top of the salmon. Second, the salmon wasn't cooked all the way through, gross and inedible. Third, the fish tacos were awful. The tortilla was large and the one piece of fish was lost inside of it. There was more stuff than fish. Fourth, the bruschetta was so heavy on the onions it was barely edible. Fifth the wine was WAY overpriced. We had 2 glasses of Meiomi pinot noir...$14 A GLASS! The whole bottle retails for $20. Maybe it was my fault for not looking closer at the menu. But in my experience with wine lists the first price is by the glass, second is half bottle and third is for a bottle (if there are three prices, if only two then it's glass and bottle). Not here. first price is for a 2 oz. taste! Who does that? Rip off! I don't know if I have ever had such awful food at such a huge price. This looks like yet another trendy new-age Italian wine and cheese bar perhaps, with what must be a fine dinner menu of exotic flavors. But no, just like all the phonies who insist on living in homes far beyond their means, this place is long on pretense and rather short on substance, I'm afraid. The pizza was bland, on a cracker thin crust that did actually resemble a soda cracker in flavor and texture rather than a well-fermented piece of Italian "00" floured dough, and though it had some stringy cheese on it, it might as well have been Costco bulk mutz... there just wasn't much going on in the flavor department. We also went for the Beef Bourguignon, and, rather than being laced with heady and complex flavors of reduced wine sauce long-simmering tender flavorful chunks of beef, it was, as another reviewer observed, basically a rather bland and uninteresting beef stew. Quite a disappointment. There are several items on the menu priced well north of $30; this fact early on led me at least to believe that these people might be the real deal, and I had high hopes, which later proved unfounded. The waiter indicated that everything comes "family style", leading one to believe that one might have "enough for a family"... this was certainly true with the beef stew dish, but no so with the fairly expensive Caesar salad, nor with the white rice side dish. Oh well. Had we known, we would have passed. We won't be back. Our bill with tip came to almost $75 for my wife, son, and myself. I think you can do much better, and possibly even end up with some flavor in your food. read more

Had a lovely dinner here last year on our vacation. Kailua is one of our fav vacation spots, but there are not that may food options. We went to Formaggio to dine on Italian and found the best burger we have ever tasted. The Kobe burger was seasoned just right where we could taste the beef and the sea salt and other seasoning made the beef taste better, it didn't over power the beef. As expected the beef was tender and full of flavor. It had generous slices of avocado which was creamy and added another layer of taste. The bread could be a little lighter, I would have preferred something more like a croissant. Even with a slightly heavy bread, the Kobe burger is the best burger we ever tasted. Our waitress was very friendly, attentive and knowledgable, i believe her name was Amanda. The bread took forever to come out to the table, she went back multiple times to get some for us and apologized because it wasn't ready. since the bread took a while we expected hot bread, it was room temperature. Hmmm late not ready...strange. the food also took a while to come. When it did it was hot and very good. We had other entrees however i wanted to highlight the unexpected best burger in the world and great service from Amanda, I hope I got her name right. read more

We went for lunch on a Saturday. I had high expectations, sadly they were not met. There were a couple of servers and 4-5 tables, so service should not be a problem. The room was hot and had to ask for them to turn the ac down, which they did. We were swatting flies our entire meal and the windows were closed. For the cost, the food was average, bland and without much taste. There was no pre-busing of the table. All plates were taken when we got the bill, similiar to the Zippy's modus operandi.
