I had my doubts. CH is known for being all vibes, no taste, but Fortunate Son may actually be one of their restaurants that is getting it right! The food here is really good! My husband and I couldn't narrow down our favorites so we ordered more than we needed! We got the crab rangoons, fried rice, orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp and green beans. Everything was delicious! You can never go wrong starting with crab rangoons. The fried rice was really tasty and well seasoned. The orange chicken had that real orange glaze (not overly sweet). Our stand outs were the honey walnut shrimp and the green beans. Both were crisp and cooked so fresh! We had plenty to go after because they did provide some nice sized portions! The restaurant itself is very vibey and over the top, as to be expected, but way smaller than I expected. Definitely make a reservation. They have a limited drink menu with a few non alcoholic options and 3 beers. Glad I finally got to try this place and that I was so pleasantly surprised by the food!
I always passed by this place and it looked intriguing, especially their inside decor, here was my experience. AMBIANCE Parking: Welcome to (No)rth (Park). It can get pretty busy just got to put in some extra time in the neighborhood or streets for metered parking. Seating: Inside and outside seating. For inside, reservations are recommended. Room for about 50 people. Vibes: Welcome to North Park, a lot of eateries and bars to hop around. It's a pretty hip place with constant traffic. The spot itself is Retro Chinese-American aesthetic with a modern twist. Think red lighting, plants, and a playlist that keeps the energy up. It's one of those spots that feels trendy but still approachable--good for dates or catching up with friends. FOOD / DRINKS Mayo Walnut Shrimp (Recommend) This is one of their standout dishes--and for good reason. Crispy shrimp coated in that creamy, slightly sweet sauce with candied walnuts. It hits that crunchy + rich + sweet combo really well and is easily one of the safer bets on the menu. Green Beans (Recommend) Simple but solid. Good balance to the heavier shrimp--fresh, slightly savory/umami making it a nice side to round things out. Ginger Lemonade (Recommend) A refreshing sip with a nice bite of ginger. SERVICE Friendly and efficient, especially considering how busy it gets. Food comes out fairly quick once you're seated. TL;DR OVERALL 4 stars. Steady prices, good food, and good choices. Fun spot with strong vibes and solid Chinese-American comfort food. It leans more elevated takeout-style than traditional, but that's kind of the appeal. I've been to pretty good Chinese spots but this is a nice experience if you're looking for nice aesthetics and good food. TIPS * This is one of the Consortium Holdings (like Morning Glory) *They also serve food for next door (Polite Provisions)
Came here with a party of 7 and for what we ordered (9 items) we were all full, had some leftovers, and all for $157 after tax and tip!! We've been to a few CH group restaurants/bars and this one's a bit different (way more casual and affordable). It's also pretty small so resy's are def recommended. The Szechuan hot chicken wings and cucumbers and fried tofu were the highlights of the items ordered! Would pass on the cabbage and sausage dish, was recommended by our server but it's a bit simple. Also Also this isn't the most traditional Chinese food so def don't go in expecting that but it still tastes good!
It's more like 2.5, but "fortunately" the staff is really nice! It's always interesting to see someone's take on Chinese food. The interior and exterior are really cool! It's the kind of aesthetic that the current generation loves. But underneath it all, it's just one step above Panda Express with a hefty price tag. The noodles were decent, but something was missing, Chinese five spice...not sure. The fried rice was good. I mean, if you can't make decent fried rice than something is wrong. The kung pau was good too, but the heat was not as strong. Their version of orange chicken was more like orange chicken breading, the pieces looked big but were not. I did like the egg rolls. Again, this appeals to a whole different generation that's too afraid to venture to a hole in the wall down in South Bay. Plus it's expensive for what you get. Chinese food is suppose to be cheap but I'm sure the rent is crazy!
Food is excellent we got basically everything that our tiny table could not fit. The aesthetic is basically why we came here. Super cute, dark, great for date night till u realize that u can't find parking so now you're late to your reservation. Which BTW don't come here if u don't have a reservation. Nice to try but idk if I would come back again
Took our mom here for her birthday and what a great choice it was. We had a reservation so we were seated right away without any wait. From the outside you wouldn't think much of it, but the moment you walk in your jaw just drops. The interior is absolutely stunning. A Chinese dragon stretches across the ceiling, red lanterns hang everywhere, and there's a cozy fireplace that just ties the whole vibe together. The space is on the smaller side but it works perfectly. It genuinely felt like we were transported to another world. We went all out and ordered pretty much everything on the menu and zero regrets. Service was impressively quick and every single dish delivered. My personal favorites were the Dan Dan noodles and the salt and pepper shrimp. We devoured everything so fast and still had leftovers from over ordering, which we happily took home. And the best part? The price. Incredibly affordable for the quality of food and the one of a kind dining experience you get. Honestly such a gem in North Park. If you haven't been, go!
They finally take reservations, yay! For the longest time they didn't, and it was always so hard to get into. This was my second time going, the first was when they first opened. The decor is still very similar, and looks very beautiful with all of the red and green decorations. The beautiful lanterns and Floral pieces all over really make this a perfect spot for the Lunar New Year celebration. We came to celebrate with the small group. I believe the largest group they can see is about 6. This area can be tough for parking, so plan to arrive early enough before your reservation, as you might have to circle around a bit. This place gets packed, as it is very popular still, and I'm not sure if everyone knows they take reservations because the walk in line was huge. One of the downsides is that the restaurant is very small, and there isn't much room to fit large groups, and they don't have much space for reservations. We ordered several dishes, and enjoyed most of them. The prices are fairly reasonable as well, and the food is mean to share family style. Orange chicken - several people in our group thought this could've had more orange flavor to it, however i thought it was just the right amount of orange flavor. It was cooked very well and not chewy or over fried. Chongqing crispy tofu - im normally not a fan of tofu but i really enjoyed this dish. It was crispy on the outside as described and coated in a nice seasoning with cumin. I would order this again. Bok Choy and Green beans - my least favorite, it had no flavor and needed salt and they both tasted the same because the gravy they were coated in seemed to be identical for both dishes. Wouldn't recommend. Dan Dan noodles - one of my favorite dishes. The noodles were cooked just right, not mushy or hard. They had a lot of flavor and everyone agreed they were very good. Salt and pepper shrimp - another one of our favorites, we all agreed they were delicious. Nice and crispy with a good flavor and not overly salty at all. Would recommend. Fried Rice - we had two orders of this one with beef and one with shrimp. Both were excellent, everyone agreed, lots of flavor, great texture and another of my favorite dishes. General Tso's chicken - the flavor on this was excellent. A little kick to it, just enough, and the chicken was cooked perfectly just like the orange chicken. Crab rangoon - I love when you can find these with real crab and that's what these had. I enjoyed them, and wish there were more in the order. Overall the experience was pretty great. Decor was beautiful, food was excellent and the staff was friendly. They did rush us out as soon as we were done, but I get it they had a long line of people waiting to come in. There were six in our group, we ordered lots of food to share, and had lots of food to take home. I highly recommend coming here at least once.
My friends and I had an early dinner to celebrate the Lunar New Year. There were only 6 of us, but we ordered 9 dishes! We ordered the following to share family style: - Fried wontons - Crispy tofu - Szechuan green beans - Bok Choy - Shrimp & pork dumplings - Dam Dan noodles - Shrimp fried rice - Beef fried rice - Orange Chicken Service was good and the food wasn't too bad, although it wasn't entirely authentic Chinese. My friends all seemed to really enjoy the food. I ate very lightly because I was going to another dinner. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with a long dragon floating in the ceiling that stretched all along the interior of the restaurant before the decorative arch at the entrance. I was there mainly for the company and photo ops.
Such a cool space with an intimate vibe and great service from start to finish. Everything is served family-style and they definitely don't skimp on portions, which makes it perfect for sharing and trying a little bit of everything. Drink options include beer and wine along with tea, lemonade, and soft drinks simple but fitting for the experience. The wonton soup is legendary: jumbo shrimp wontons, rich flavorful broth, and comforting in the best way. Do not miss the dumplings they've got a nice little kick of spice and so much flavor. Parking in this area is always a challenge, so rideshare is your best bet. Reservations are highly recommended if you want to sit indoors. Overall, absolutely worth a visit. They also do a takeout and you can get drinks at Polite Provisions next door and order from Fortunate Son but you miss the vibe.
I definitely need to come back here, but from what I remember this spot was pretty good! There was a bit of a wait when I went, but nothing too crazy. Parking around here can definitely be a pain so keep that in mind. One thing that really stuck out to me was the fried rice I'd 100% order that again. The vibe alone is super dope. They really nailed the decor down to the T. The whole place has a dark, moody ambiance and a really cool aesthetic that makes it feel unique. I actually came here for a birthday celebration and the service was overall really nice which made the experience even better. The only sad part is they had this dessert that they no longer have and it was SO good. I still think about it sometimes and wish they'd bring it back. Overall a really chill spot with good food and a great atmosphere. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.
Good news is the food here is great. The service could be a bit better so my advice is to go next door to Polite Provisions and order there. The bar staff there is awesome and it has more tables. Okay, so food! The tofu dish was da bomb here. Perfectly crispy and great flavor. And the portion was really large. They give at least 12 pieces.
Fortunate son has been on my list to try for a few years and my husband surprised me yesterday with a little birthday outing for linner and man, did it mean expectations! Ambiance - nailed it, so freaking cute! I definitely want to go back at night to show moody it can be! Service- very friendly, helpful and attentive! Food - really love that everything was family style and the flavors were on point! The orange chicken was refreshing almost! Like you could taste hand squeezed orange almost, idk how else to describe it! The lo mein was delicious, the general tso cauliflower was delicious... Literally zero complaints about this place and the prices are excellent too!
All of the food was excellent--except for the hot and sour soup, which lacked both heat and tang. Everything else tasted incredibly fresh and didn't have the heavy, greasy feel you sometimes get with typical Chinese food. The décor is vibrant and colorful. It's a bit dark and can get a little loud, but overall it's fun, lively, and full of interesting details everywhere you look. Service was good. It took a little while before we were checked on, but the staff was very friendly. The pacing of the meal was unusual: a side dish arrived first, followed by the appetizers, and finally the soup. If you're looking for fresh dishes and a fun, energetic atmosphere, this spot is definitely worth a try.
Fortunate Son was our choice to toast in the Lunar New Year. Fortunate Son restaurant is part of CH Consortium Holdings which owns and operates many restaurants and hotels like the Lafayette, in the same neighborhood. The area FS is part of North Park/University Heights and parking can sometimes be a challenge, I suggest you take a car service or maybe get a parking spot...Lucky you ;) Vibrantly decorated with vivid jade green tiles on the outside and the inside has the prominence of the color red throughout: red faux flowers hanging from the ceiling and red lanterns and the Lion/Dragon head to wave off evil...is all very Alluring and very Feng Shui ... Space is small, with smallish bistro size dining tables limiting space for ordering lots of food as it leaves little tabletop space :( The seating space can get too close for comfort if dining inside so to avoid that, there are limited outdoor seating. Since I've dined here before, it does get crowded. The best time to come to chose your seating preference is to arrive when the restaurant opens. Service by staff was accommodating and helpful most times but could always improve with niceness. The menu offers limited selections including vegetable options of popular Chinese favorite dishes which are prepared for the American palate and every dish I had here were all delish but not with much Wow Factor taste as authentic Chinese foods. Especially enjoyed both the Dan Dan noodles and the low mein noodles with veggies since eating noodles is for Longevity of Life. Also like all the veggies: bok choy, green beans, and cauliflower prepared with chinese spices and sauces enhance taste. My dining friends liked their meat dishes: broccoli with beef topped with sesame seeds, pork and shrimp wontons in chili and orange chicken. I've only eaten the honey walnut shrimp and black pepper shrimp dishes and both were delicious. Overall, have had a pleasant dining experience at Fortunate Son. We dropped in without a reservation for a party of 2 on a Sunday but we were able to get a table outside. We noticed a lot of people get turned away or quoted very long wait times, a table for 4 sat dirty and empty next to us the whole time we ate. First let me explain that the food was NOT bad, but a lot of it is seasoned the same. It was kinda of weird in that way, but again the food was not bad. Some of the dishes we had were crispy tofu, dan dan noodles, and honey walnut shrimp (the best dish!). This isn't your traditional Chinese take-out restaurant, Fortunate Son offers you a thrilling dining experience with amazing food! The service and overall vibe of the establishment was simply stunning. It made you feel like you were transported to a modern fashion location. If you're looking for traditional Chinese Food, I wouldn't go here. In my opinion, the food has a high quality chain food feel, but the quality of food is really good. I really enjoyed the honey walnut shrimp. The shrimp was crispy and the flavor was very present and palatable. The Bok Choy was good but I thought it needed more flavor and the Dan Dan noodles were a bit too spicy for me to enjoy, but I have a low spice tolerance and I still thought it was good. The crab Rangoon's were conventionally good but I have a feeling they were made with real crab and I prefer the sweetness of imitation crab. For 4 plates it was around $65 pre tip. I would go again because the overall vibes was nice but I'd say a little pricey Overall, I really enjoyed the food here and I would totally recommend and come again! read more

It's been two years since the last time I've been which is crazy to me because i loved it so much and have told so many people to come. Yesterday was a bit of a disappointment. The decor has stayed the same but the service and food has changed and not for the better. They now take reservation! There was no one by the host stand so we walked inside. Right away we were stopped and said to go back out the host stand. The hostess followed us and I let her know we were there for reservations. We were sat next to the entrance window. This is where I realized the hostess does not stand at the host stand and gets visibly upset every time someone walks in. She tells them to go outside and wait. There is no room to stand inside but you should have someone stay by the host stand. Anyways.... Green beans and the Dan Dan noodles were great! The cucumbers were lacking, Tso Chicken was dry and the beef & broccoli .... Well, let's just say I wish it was just broccoli. We took most of it home as they have large portions but the to go boxes are difficult to close properly. read more

I recently moved to San Diego, and have been trying to find my local eateries. As a fan of Chinese food, and other forms of Asian cuisine, my friend offered to show me this spot - and wow!!! First of all, the decoration is super cute. The fireplace at the back of the restaurant is captivating, the ceiling is lined with beautiful Chinese lanterns, and the seating arrangement feels intimate. The restaurant is family style, and they serve the food as it is ready. When you come, bring your appetite because everything is so delicious that you'll want to order as much as you can. We got the Honey Walnut Shrimp, Dan Dan Noodles, the Szechuan Green Beans, and the Shrimp and Pork Dumplings. My favorite was the noodles, but everything we shared was to die for. 1. Parking is horrible. It was unreal that they charge a $50 no show fee when u book a rsvp online. I guess that's one way to make money. 2. I'm not sure if this place claims to serve authentic Chinese food or not. If you want authentic don't go here. But the food is not bad if you don't have expectations. Crab rangoons- nice and crunchy Dan Dan noodles- I swear this is just instant ramen noodles with their own sauce Green beans- it's okay, I prefer the DTF ones more Crispy tofu- kinda hated this. They're breaded and fried?! And idk I like cumin on lamb and meat but I didn't like it on this tofu. Orange chicken- very good, comparable to Panda Express flavor Ambiance inside is nice if you are young and want dark/moody. Wouldn't bring my in laws here though case they won't be able to read the menu. Overall if you want good Chinese food, don't go here- go to Nobel chef or taste of Hong Kong instead. If you want to go somewhere purely for just Chinese/asian aesthetics fun then yes go here with your friends. read more

Teeny tiny place with fun decor inside. We didn't have a reservation but luckily only had to wait for half an hour. Huge portions of dishes and relatively small menu. All items meant to be shared family style. Between the two of us we had the crispy tofu and lo mein with beef. It's not authentic Chinese food but I knew it going in. It's more for ambience and the experience. Tables are very close together as other reviewers have mentioned. There was a couple of songs that were playing on repeat, all great and happy songs though it was a bit odd to listen to disco funk as one eat Chinese food. Overall I'm glad to have tried this spot though if I were to go again, I would try to make reservations ahead of time. The line got a lot longer when we left. read more
Seems like you have to look far out in advance to get reservations here. We came with no reservations around 530p on a tuesday, no issues getting seated inside. Love the ambience. Noting that consortium holdings really likes their dim lighting, alas, it's a vibe. Service was good. Everything is family style-- so big and shareable servings. They also don't come with rice-- which I didn't mind and we didn't order a side of it. Ordered the honey walnut shrimp, orange chicken and the green beans. All of it was delicious, hit my nostalgia for chinese food, and obviously a higher end version of Panda Express' orange chicken (which I haven't had in decades), and the honey walnut prawns were super saucy and hit that spot. read more

This spot sits in a pretty hectic part of town - parking took me about 30 minutes, so plan ahead and show up early. We came on a double date night and got seated outdoors, which was breezy and chill with a neon sign glowing above us - definitely added a cool touch. The menu was simple, which I liked. Still, if you're going for max ambience, try to sit inside - the interior is a whole vibe. Our server was great: super friendly, attentive, and checked on us often. As for the food.. We ordered crab rangoons, hot and sour soup, honey walnut shrimp, fried rice, lo mein noodles, and kung pao chicken. The honey walnut shrimp was okay, and everything else didn't really hit. It lacked that authentic Asian flavor that I'm used to. I wouldn't come back personally, but you have to give credit where it's due. This place stays busy and clearly has a loyal following. read more

Located in the heart of North Park. This fashionable eatery comes with a terrace that offers Chinese specialties & cocktails, plus a take-out option. Also known for their bright food and over the top decor. The lavish interior speaks for itself, with red paper lanterns, overloaded floral accents, and a giant dragon head. Service was excellent! Host accommodated our family even though we didn't have a reservation. Saturdays they open at 3pm. Get there early and make a line... Get's busy real quick! Highly recommend this spot! read more
Beautiful and intimate ambiance inside, lit with red lanterns and plastic greenery. We waited 50 minutes on a Thursday night at 6pm, and the hostess texted us when our table was ready. (We dropped by Polite Provisions next door for a quick drink!) The food was alright, with the standouts being the honey walnut shrimp and the salt and pepper tofu--both fried extremely well. I thought the orange chicken was not worth ordering, as it was quite doughy, not very warm, and overall made for an unappetizing bite. The green beans were pretty standard but salty. Amongst four of us we split two bowls of rice which was necessary because the food was generally over-salted. Would give three stars for the food/wait but four for the service and ambiance. read more

I have been meaning to try this place for over a year. Once I did, I cannot stop coming back. I first visited about two months ago and have been back at least seven times. On my initial visit last, I had to try the egg rolls and crab rangoon. I really didn't like either but that has not deterred me from becoming a loyal fan. I found the outside won ton of the egg rolls to be a bit tough and thick. It is a little difficult to chew. The filling had a good flavor. You receive three egg rolls in an order. I love Crab Rangoon but the filling was a bit less traditional than what I am used to. I like a more creamy and thicker texture. I could smell the seafood but I didn't really taste the crab. Three things that make up my go to order are (1) honey walnut shrimp, (2) lo mein with chicken and (3) fried rice. When I order all three, I find that I can eat it for three meals. Well worth the price. I love leftovers. I initially ordered the honey walnut shrimp based on other Yelp reviews. They did not steer me wrong. It was delicious. The shrimp was large. Took two or three bites to eat one. The coating had a creamy sauce and then the shrimp was dunked in the walnuts. It was a little crispy. The coating wasn't too thick where it overloaded the shrimp. Super yummy. Even better, the coating makes a great sauce for lo mein leftovers the following day. The Lo Mein noodles with chicken are soft and thick noodles with snows peas, carrots, scallions. It did not disappoint. The chicken was cut into big chunks of thigh meat. Nice and juicy. Nothing worse than dry chicken, which this wasn't. The the fried rice is fantastic too. A nice basic flavorful base for any main dish. I was surprised by how well everything heats up the next day. No horrible shrimp smell in the microwave so you will not be shunned by your coworkers. I ordered through the Toast app so it was super easy. I parked down the street on the Adams Avenue bridge and walked three blocks to the restaurant. There is a separate door for take out on the right which made it quick and convenient to pick up dinner. The app will not allow you to order until the tea actually opens. If you want to dine in, I would suggest to get there right when it opens as they are always packed. read more
This is a restaurant worth going to for the decoration and ambiance. It is probably the coolest Chinese restaurant that I've been in to. The decorations are really neat and make for great photos. The food, however, is only so-so. I ordered the orange chicken, and it was overcooked and hard. My girlfriend said her noodles tasted more like Thai food than Chinese. The service started out good until we got our food, and then the server never came back. I couldn't get a staff member to even look my way. I got up to get my own soy sauce. It took over 10 minutes after we were done to get the check. If you want a nice Chinese restaurant for pics this place is great, but don't expect the greatest food or service. read more

My fiancé and I came here for our anniversary! We got seated next to the fireplace which was super nice! The restaurant itself is small, but very aesthetically pleasing! The food portions are family style just a heads up. Our favorite dish was definitely the Dan Dan noodles and the general Tso's chicken. Not pictured individually was the crab Rangoons. We had a reservation for 615pm and was seated immediately after checking in. They have a 10 minute grace period. I'm not sure how long the wait time would be if you're coming in with a reservation! Been wanting to try this place for so long and finally snagged a Tuesday reservation! Everything we ate was so delicious, the crab Rangoon was the best I've ever had and I've never had a fried rice with so much flavor. I do have to say that the fried rice and noodles both came to us a little cold, with many noodles stuck together as if they had been sitting out. The service was quick and I saw our food be placed on the window and immediately brought to us so not sure why it was lukewarm/cold. The theming and vibes in this place are so cool, it's small and cozy inside and everything from the chopsticks to the napkins to the lighting is themed and on point. My boyfriend & I came here & loved it! He had 2 orders of the crab rangoons they were so good. My only wish, is that the tables were a bit bigger! We couldn't fit all the food we ordered on the table as it was relatively pretty small, so we had to place some of our stuff on the seats which I wasn't a fan of. The lighting & ambiance was amazing, & the leftovers were just as good warmed up! We hope to come back, & do like that since the wait was 2 hours, we could still go to polite provisions next door to get some appetizers while we waited. read more

We've been wanting to try this restaurant and we put our name down! when they had last minute cancellation, they called us and it was very nice of them to call us back on a busy day! They only have IPA and wines so we had that! The food was so tasty, we tried kungpao chicken, shrimp lo mein and cucumber salad! All was good and tasty! The place is super cute with hanging plants throughout and hangin Chinese lanterns that sets the cozy atmosphere! VERDICT: I WILL COME BACK read more

Yes,but be prepared to wait especially if you want indoor dining. Restaurant is small but so worth the wait. As someone else mentioned, get there early for first seating

Yes but you will have to wait to be seated might take up to 3 hours

No it's not POC owned, It's own by Consortium. Fortunate Son's chef Tony Guan I believe is a POC.
We tried to go tonight around 6:30 pm and were told there was a 3 hour wait for a table...? How is this possible and how do we manage this if there are no reservations? Many customers in line has the same question.
There's no trick to trying to get in on the weekends, outside of NOT trying on the weekends unless you're prepared to grab yourself a nice table at Polite Provisions and wait it out. Tuesday/Wednesday are less busy if you get there anytime before… Read more
