FORTUNATE SON @ North Park I was pretty stoked about this place after hearing it was a go-to spot from my boyfriends friend over and over again. We did a walk in, and it was a 2 hour wait, so we waited, more than excited. It did indeed take the 2 hour wait, so recommend reservations ahead of time. Parking was a massacre, it's all street or pay to park but there isn't any spots even available (small lot) The ambiance was astonishing and stunning, I absolutely loved the lantern lights, the dragons, and all the small details of this place. Even the plate, they were asian liked with the traditional bowls and chopsticks. We ordered 4 things off the menu, the honey walnut shrimp, bok choy, the fried chicken, and the beef fried rice. I actually disliked quite everything besides the honey walnut shrimp. The bok choy came with just about 8 pieces, so small, and it was SOGGY, drenched in their salty sauce. Fried chicken was dry, no flavor besides the pound of green onions and red pepper, it was atleast hot and crispy. The beef fried rice was the WORSE for me, once you got down half way, it was drenched with so much oil (photo is also inserted). It was also all over my plate and there was just a whole pocket of oil, and it made my stomach later that night feeling awful. The service was horrible as well. I waited outside with at least 4 other people behind me as three of the same servers glanced at us all and walked straight passed us, until one of them finally says, i'll be with you shortly, then immediately leaves. No reservations made, but the host was very nice and said to put our name down and come over and get drinks at the host pub while waiting. It is a little smaller than i expected it to be but nevertheless the atmosphere displays comfort chinese food. There was a party of 4 of us and we all ended leaving full and satisfied. Not to mention all the food listed below was an affordable $120 and we still had many leftovers left. We ordered the Shrimp Fried rice, pork and vegetable egg rolls, pork and shrimp dumpling, crab rangoon, orange chicken, honey walnut shrimp, salt & pepper shrimp and the dan dan noodles. Out all of my favorite dishes the pork and shrimp dumplings were my favorite. The chili sauce had a nice hint of spiciness but was boasting with soy flavor. The orange chicken was more on the citrus/sweet side, kind of like panda express. The salt & pepper shrimp was very spicy but in a strong taste of pepper way. The shrimp fried rice was excellent. Great service, super kind and fast staff that were very attentive the entire time. We also really enjoyed our food. We got the honey walnut shrimp and the lo mein noodles and were full and happy by the end of our meal, though we wish we could have had room for more! The vibe here is so glowy and sexy. Very dim lit, but it does get loud when it's busy. The food was very flavorful! Highly recommend the Lo Mein Noodles, Crab Rangoon and Honey Walnut Shrimp--which btw all the shrimp here are huge! Fortunate son in North Park is a beautiful Chinese restaurant with elegant Chinese decorative ceilings and red lights to make for a romantic setting. A good place for Chinese food to dine in or take out. I ordered the Honey Walnut Shrimp, Szechuan hot chicken wings, beef fried rice, and Shanghai bok choy. The Pros: The honey walnut shrimp was absolutely delicious and perfectly crispy. Every bite was amazing and definitely worth ordering if you like shrimp. The chicken wings and beef fried rice had great flavor too. They have only one bathroom but the decor and vibe matched the decor and ambiance inside. Service were nice and the food came out pretty quick, with all the items being more larger appetizer sized plates that act as shareables. Most items do not come with rice or noodles and will have to be ordered separately. The Cons: Be prepared to wait about an hour and a half to two hours for a table of you are doing a walk in. Definitely make a reservation way in advanced. This place is pretty small and they get filled up fast. The beef fried rice was also very oily, more oily than I'd like it to be. Obviously, a Chinese restaurant has more oil used than most places but there was a puddle of oil at the bottom of our bowl. Great flavor up until you get to the end. The bok choy was also not the great. Not a ton of bok choy and it was drowned in a sauce which overpowered the veggie. The chicken wings also felt like it needed a sauce and was also drowned in green onions and cilantro. Parking is atrocious and difficult to find. It is mostly street parking with a pay to park lot behind the building. The Verdict: I'd recommend trying this place out at least once. The long wait increased the hype to the place and other people we saw looked to enjoy it. The staff was very accommodating because our original reservation was for patio seating but it was unfortunately raining that night. They helped us find a spot inside! Thanks so much! Fortunate Son was our choice to toast in the Lunar New Year. Fortunate Son restaurant is part of CH Consortium Holdings which owns and operates many restaurants and hotels like the Lafayette, in the same neighborhood. The area FS is part of North Park/University Heights and parking can sometimes be a challenge, I suggest you take a car service or maybe get a parking spot...Lucky you ;) Vibrantly decorated with vivid jade green tiles on the outside and the inside has the prominence of the color red throughout: red faux flowers hanging from the ceiling and red lanterns and the Lion/Dragon head to wave off evil...is all very Alluring and very Feng Shui ... Space is small, with smallish bistro size dining tables limiting space for ordering lots of food as it leaves little tabletop space :( The seating space can get too close for comfort if dining inside so to avoid that, there are limited outdoor seating. Since I've dined here before, it does get crowded. The best time to come to chose your seating preference is to arrive when the restaurant opens. Service by staff was accommodating and helpful most times but could always improve with niceness. The menu offers limited selections including vegetable options of popular Chinese favorite dishes which are prepared for the American palate and every dish I had here were all delish but not with much Wow Factor taste as authentic Chinese foods. Especially enjoyed both the Dan Dan noodles and the low mein noodles with veggies since eating noodles is for Longevity of Life. Also like all the veggies: bok choy, green beans, and cauliflower prepared with chinese spices and sauces enhance taste. We noticed a lot of people get turned away or quoted very long wait times, a table for 4 sat dirty and empty next to us the whole time we ate. First let me explain that the food was NOT bad, but a lot of it is seasoned the same. It was kinda of weird in that way, but again the food was not bad. The decor has stayed the same but the service and food has changed and not for the better. They now take reservation! There was no one by the host stand so we walked inside. Right away we were stopped and said to go back out the host stand. The hostess followed us and I let her know we were there for reservations. We were sat next to the entrance window. This is where I realized the hostess does not stand at the host stand and gets visibly upset every time someone walks in. She tells them to go outside and wait. There is no room to stand inside but you should have someone stay by the host stand. Anyways.... Green beans and the Dan Dan noodles were great! The cucumbers were lacking, Tso Chicken was dry and the beef & broccoli .... Well, let's just say I wish it was just broccoli. Teeny tiny place with fun decor inside. We didn't have a reservation but luckily only had to wait for half an hour. Huge portions of dishes and relatively small menu. All items meant to be shared family style. Between the two of us we had the crispy tofu and lo mein with beef. It's not authentic Chinese food but I knew it going in. It's more for ambience and the experience. Tables are very close together as other reviewers have mentioned. There was a couple of songs that were playing on repeat, all great and happy songs though it was a bit odd to listen to disco funk as one eat Chinese food. Overall I'm glad to have tried this spot though if I were to go again, I would try to make reservations ahead of time. The line got a lot longer when we left. read more

Tried this again. We were starving at the bar next door, and did takeout, and the Dan Dan noodles were SO GOOD. Also had the orange chicken. Wow it was so much better this time! Flavors were on point. Not too salty. YAY! read more

Seems like you have to look far out in advance to get reservations here. We came with no reservations around 530p on a tuesday, no issues getting seated inside. Love the ambience. Noting that consortium holdings really likes their dim lighting, alas, it's a vibe. Service was good. Everything is family style-- so big and shareable servings. They also don't come with rice-- which I didn't mind and we didn't order a side of it. Ordered the honey walnut shrimp, orange chicken and the green beans. All of it was delicious, hit my nostalgia for chinese food, and obviously a higher end version of Panda Express' orange chicken (which I haven't had in decades), and the honey walnut prawns were super saucy and hit that spot. read more

This spot sits in a pretty hectic part of town - parking took me about 30 minutes, so plan ahead and show up early. We came on a double date night and got seated outdoors, which was breezy and chill with a neon sign glowing above us - definitely added a cool touch. The menu was simple, which I liked. Still, if you're going for max ambience, try to sit inside - the interior is a whole vibe. Our server was great: super friendly, attentive, and checked on us often. As for the food.. We ordered crab rangoons, hot and sour soup, honey walnut shrimp, fried rice, lo mein noodles, and kung pao chicken. The honey walnut shrimp was okay, and everything else didn't really hit. It lacked that authentic Asian flavor that I'm used to. I wouldn't come back personally, but you have to give credit where it's due.
