When I'm looking for a little more upscale meal experience on Mass Ave, Forty Five Degrees is one of the first places I think about. The inside has a very cool ambience, a little industrial with all the metal and blue lighting but with a hint of vintage feel because of the furniture. I've never been not for dinner but it takes on more of a night club feel after hours. They have plenty of specialty cocktails to showcase, with beer and wine for those who don't enjoy hard liquors. As the sushi lover that I am, I always opt for a roll or two. Their specialty rolls are a little pricey but worth the splurge, I haven't tried one that I didn't like yet. But if sushi isn't your thing, the salads are solid and the entrees always sound delicious as well. There's a little outdoor seating section with bar seats along the fence that faces out to the College and Mass Ave intersection, great for people/dog watching, I've even seen Andrew Luck running by before! If sushi is your thing, I definitely recommend stopping by, taking a seat outside, and ordering a roll to watch Indy play out in front of you. read more

Worst sushi I've ever had, and that includes sushi from the grocery store. Ordered an assortment of nigiri. Quality of fish was low. Absolutely no marbling on the salmon. Looked almost like smoked lox. Tuna was the same. Worst of all were the salmon eggs. All of it was warm and the salmon eggs were mushy and had an off taste. I was just hoping it wouldn't make me sick. All of it was unbelievably bland. Also ordered some type of red snapper roll. It was absolutely atrocious. I don't know what part of the fish it came from but the sashimi it was wrapped in almost had a gristle or cartilage texture to it and was very chewy. A friend ordered the eel roll and the California roll and got super sick. Someone else ordered the crab rangoon that was atrocious also. Small sized and exterior was thick. I always love stepping into this restaurant. The staff is above and beyond - they are so kind, and always make you feel welcome. The atmosphere is very modern but inviting. Best of all the food is top notch! The sushi overall is great, my personal favorite specialty roll is called the Playboy roll. However if you're looking for a little less stuff, the spicy tuna is always a great choice! If you're looking for a good shared appetizer I will always recommend the all he tuna nachos. The combination of the freshness of the fish and the sauces that they prepare make it a fun treat for everyone at the table. I love going here in Sunday's because they have half price sushi! I love their playboy roll, it always causes a scene because it's on fire. They also have great miso soup. Very impressed with my experience here! First off the environment is perfect!! The booths are elevated somewhat off the main floor to give a great look over the whole restaurant.. plus the booths are so big you could fit up to like 10 people in one booth!! I went with one other friend & the big booths were great to sit back & relax in. Two, I'm not much of a sushi expert yet but that wasn't a problem. The staff were very knowledgeable & gave great recommendations based off of what your taste preferences were. & Last, the food & drinks! You have to come in here willing to explore new taste buds. We arrived in Indianapolis late on a Thursday night, and we wanted a quick bite before bed. Our original restaurant selection didn't serve food past 10pm, so we wandered next door to Forty Five Degrees. They confirmed that kitchen was open until 11, so we had a seat. The restaurant is really pretty! It is glossy and open, and very unique in its style. Our server, Lyric, was wonderful! She was so friendly and vibrant. She rushed to get our orders in and even made sure I got to order another drink before the bar shut down. The drinks were great--and half-price on Thursday! We had a Stormy Night, a Caribbean Mojito, a Venetian Sunset, and a Blonde Moment. The Blonde Moment was my favorite! Great dessert cocktail. We also ordered potstickers, the 45 sushi roll, and teriyaki chicken. We definitely recommend the potstickers and the teriyaki chicken! We are novices with sushi, so we can't really offer our much advice there. I loved that another restaurant turned us away, and Forty Five Degrees--and Lyric in particular--made us feel so welcome! Holy sh*t! Really awful! I came here on a Sunday night for the 1/2 price sushi with a friend. Expect to wait for a table, that's fine. This is a Mass Ave Sunday night staple, and I've always considered it to be so even without having visited but one other time several months ago. The wait was reasonable. We started with drinks and appetizers. My friend ordered a $5 Long Island (Sunday special) and I ordered an iced tea. The waiter kept bringing more tea but NEVER refilled the ice which was completely gone by the end of the first glass. I drank room temperature tea throughout my meal. My diet is pescatarian and my friend's is vegetarian. We ordered spring rolls (vegetarian unless otherwise specified) as our appetizer. You receive four rolls. When they arrived, I took a bite and it was full of chicken. We sent it back and our waiter apologized. When he came back with the new rolls, there were only two on the plate. "These are the last two spring rolls in the restaurant, I'll see if I can get them to take half off or something," he informed us. So they come out wrong, then they come out as a half order, and we've still gotta pay? We both work in the service industry, and we're generally not complainers, but we thought this was an appropriate time to remove an item from the bill. We decided not to bring it up until the end of the meal, maybe he would do us a solid. As far as spring rolls go, I would say 4.5/5. They could've used some more filling. Next came the sushi. I ordered the Thai Kiss and the Ultimate veggie. The Thai Kiss was delicious. It was full of flavor and crunch. Expect a chewy roll in a Thai chili sauce glaze with notes of ginger and a bit of crunch on top. The ultimate veggie was a little bland on its own. Dipped lightly in soy sauce, it just tasted like salt. I gave half of it to my friend. Neither would have been worth their full $16 or $9 price tags, respectively. When the bills came, we asked the waiter if he could get the spring rolls taken off entirely. He went to see what he could do. We had to wait a little longer, but he did get them taken off. When we looked at our bills, we realized we had been charged full price for the sushi on 1/2 of Sunday. This also happened to me on my first visit. This is their biggest day of the week and every other order has been half off. Easy mistake? Or trying to slip one under the radar? I'm not so sure. Anyways, there we were, stuck waiting for our bill for the third time. Finally we got the hell out of there. I never stiff anyone. I work for tips myself. This guy got the big stiff. I don't wanna drop his name, that's rude, but the restaurant would be better off without him. Even if your product sucks, your service can make up for it. I work as a concierge in one of Indy's top downtown hotels and have always considered this the place to be for sushi, even with the wait. I live in the neighborhood and try to support local business! I sent all of my guests here. Never again. I can only send them places where I know that they will receive exceptional service that I can keep my word on. Trust me, I'm not that picky. I tend to frequent dive bars and diners and I've seen better service a hundred times over in all of them. On the hunt for a new sushi destination. I honestly don't understand what my problem is...this is one of my most favoritest spots in Indy...I know that isn't a word but it's my review...I say what I want ;) This place is one of the "Indianapolis Greats". I typically go on Sundays for date nights. I don't know how many times I've been here. It's such a great place. The food is really good (the actual food, not the sushi...well the sushi is really good but that isn't my focus right now). Their salads are great. I remember one time a while back I ordered a salad and I ordered chicken breast to go with it...it was expensive but I went on ahead and purchased it to go with my salad since there wasn't a protein...mind you this was a few years ago, once again I don't know why in the world I have yet to check-in to this place. Whatever salad I ordered with a grilled chicken breast added was simply amazing. The Sushi...I'm addicted. You can easily spend 20 dollars and feel really full off of Sushi alone. FortyFive exudes a kind of stereotyped modern charm, with its moving water lights, white plastic chairs, loud electronic music and geometrically-shaped plates. However, it was actually more friendly and comfortable than I would have thought. They make an excellent dirty martini, and even offer blue cheese-stuffed olives (though the quality of the cheese was not great). I ordered the one veggie roll they offer and seaweed salad, and they were both tasty and not terribly overpriced. The service was very good. Eating and drinking at a place like FortyFive, I think, is what makes some people felt like they've really "gone out" for the night. It justifies the dressed up, vaguely slutty outfit you've put together or the new button-down shirt, fancy jeans and hair gel. We went here yesterday to grab lunch after marching in the pride parade. Overall the experience was mediocre verging on crappy. First of, they charged us for water. What place charges you for water?? I asked for a glass of water and they brought me a bottle of not even name brand water and charged me 2.50 for it. No cup. Just the bottle. Okay. Weird vibes already. The place looked really cool inside but all the servers seemed like they were "too cool" or "too busy" to make time for our party of 3. I'm someone who will give a place a second chance even if the food is mediocre as long as the service is good or great. We're in Indianapolis, not LA so I don't really understand the pretentiousness behind the service. Midwest hospitality is a real thing,folks...even in your trendy cocktail lounge/sushi bar. The sushi was alright. It didn't knock my socks off. The shrimp tempura was soggy and just tasted like deep fried batter not light crispy tempura batter. We ended up spending over 55$ just for lunch and NO alcohol and honestly I'd rather go somewhere where I could get a better product and less pretentiousness for a fraction of the cost. Ok....I'm going to be politically incorrect with this review but it is my experience and I've talked to others who have had the same experience but won't say it out loud. Food - it was ok but a little pricey. I love sushi and had much better at comparable or better prices. Facility - awesome and well designed. Very trendy and on the weekend is a good place to people watch. Drinks are good too. Service - well this is where it starts to go downhill and my political correctness goes out the door. I've been here several times and each time the service is consistently slow and the severs often act like I'm bothering them. Now...I've never had this issue with the female severs. However, I notice that the type of male servers they often have working are a little arrogant and pretentious. sometimes I believe prejudice when it comes to......."breeders". Well there it is. Someone who has fought for equal rights and fairness for ALL actually felt uncomfortable multiple times with SOME of the male servers. Just attitude and feeling like I'm in a trendy pretentious LA restaurant with a velvet rope. Multiple times I've had attitude after attitude and one time the guys kept talking to each other and I had to ask for service. And I was one of two tables with people in the joint! Please keep the trendy and hip feel, decent food, but remember all people should be treated with respect and good customer service regardless of their life style. I'll be honest - I've only been to this place once not on a Sunday. I am a big sushi fan, and Forty Five Degrees gets it right, but knowing that I can get everything I want half off on Sundays means there is no reason to go any other day of the week! If you do happen to check it out on a Sunday, expect a wait. We try to head over late afternoon and squeeze in at a spot at the bar, but if it's a nice day (hard to come by lately) or there is some sort of event downtown, expect to wait at least 30 minutes. The wait is well worth it, though. Once you're seated, the sushi is half off and delicious. I agree with others on here who have mentioned the Mount Fuji Roll - it is pure fried bliss! I am not getting the HATIN' for this place, people! My girlfriend and I were on Mass Ave on Sunday evening, seeing what was open. We passed by here, and I asked a guy if it was good. Yes, he said, it's half-price sushi on Sundays. I was UP for that. Now listen to this: I lived in Japan for eight years. I've had some of the best sushi and some of the worst. And a lot of just average. In the *home* of sushi, you dig? I think being in Japan and experiencing sushi as *ordinary food* instead of trendy fare gives one the perspective needed to really judge the stuff. The people dissing this restaurant sound like a bunch of sushi snobs who probably wouldn't know the good stuff anyway. So... My gf was trying sushi for the first time. I ordered two eternal classics: maguro (tuna) and hamachi (yellowtail). I am actually not a huge maguro fan. Great maguro is truly great, but mediocre maguro is not worth eating. But it is truly *the* archetypal sushi, and I ordered it specifically to see what this place was about. Hamachi, on the other hand, is my personal favorite sushi. I wanted to see how well the joint could please ME. Guess what? Both were excellent. They may have been previously frozen, I don't know. If they were, however, they sure thawed them out pretty well. I ain't gonna say they blew my mind. But they would surely pass muster in Japan. The size of the fish slices was generous, too. The crab nigirizushi was also excellent. The eel roll was well-constructed. Could have had a bit more fish in it, but it was tasty with a nice tare (sauce). The soft shell crab roll was generous with the crab and had a bunch of juicy crab bits on top as bonus. And at half price, it was the SHIZZLE, people! I also liked the atmosphere of the place, too. They had club music playing, kinda loud, but not *too loud*, and it was fun. The staff was cool, and the clientele was very diverse. It's a fun joint. I've been to Forty Five about 10 times in the last year. Overall, I have found the sushi to be decent, and the staff sometimes pretentious and sometimes friendly, and the vibe a bit of a turnoff. It was a nice change-up so I still came back. I won't be coming back again. The service on my last trip was terrible. After being ignored for an hour waiting on 3 rolls, I asked what the status was. I was told I was next, which is odd considering I was watching people show up and be served in the interim.15 minutes later I asked the front desk to cancel my order (because I couldn't find my server again). Instead of cancelling it, they found my rolls and delivered them. I sent them back anyway, paid the drink tab (which was substantial being we had waited so long), and left. My server then told me they were 'under-staffed" because people had called in. This information would have been good to have before I placed my order. Having known the wait, I could have made an informed decision. It wasn't overly crowded. Instead, they lost a customer. read more

Sushi in Indiana is a hard thing and though there are a lot of places that offer it, it's not always good. 45 degrees is located in a super popular location on mass so the street parking can sometimes be hard to find but for downtown sushi options this is a great one. With the mass ave address comes the mass ave prices but on Sunday's they offer 1/2 prices sushi. Now they do require some sort of beverage purchase and it is dine in (no leftovers to go) only. It is also 21+ so bring your ID and be prepared to wait a bit if it's on a Sunday. Totally worth it though for tasty sushi for good prices! read more

It's extremely loud. The sushi was so so. The combinations were not interesting. The location is very nice but a young college crowd would appreciate it more. They do not allow kids and I could not bring food home to my son. They also had multiple VERY intoxicated patrons come in and were allowed to stumble to a seat. When I think of sushi in the downtown / Mass Ave area, I immediately think of Forty Five Degrees's half-priced sushi on Sundays. It's a staple for many; although I can't say I've tried it during the half-price specials. I have been here once for sushi, during Devour Downtown. It was a great menu, and I had the veggie sushi options. They were delicious and very fresh tasting. Most of the times, however, I come to this stop for a quick drink. The drinks are great, the atmosphere is definitely different than what you'd expect from Indianapolis. The staff isn't bad; some times it's hit or miss. As most have mentioned: sushi is their selling product. If you're looking for other specialties, I can't say that if this is the best place for that or not, but it's always worth a shot! read more

Music was pounding like a nightclub, waitress was frazzled and not at all attentive, and most importantly the food was sub-par. Miso soup came in a hot dish with lukewarm soup. Must have been sitting under a heat lamp. The tofu in it was the gross prepackaged salad kind from the supermarket, not the silky kind that is expected in miso soup. I had the sashimi sampler and the pieces were pre-cut nigiri pieces (thin, long), not the thick cut I expect from sashimi. I should know better than to order sushi from a place whose lunch menu is filled with burgers and sandwiches. Water was never refilled and waitress didn't even check up on us until I flagged her over to bring the bill. If I return at all it would be only for the cocktails, but there are plenty of other places in the area that offer superior drinks and food. read more

Forty Five Degrees is a fabulous sushi restaurant with an ultra-contemporary decor right on the corner of Mass Ave and College. Everything from the bar to the lighting to the seats are ultra-chic in this Mass Ave sushi restaurant. I've been here a number of times and I'll tell you what keeps bringing me back....the food and the people. The drink menu is plentiful and you're bound to find what you're looking for here. Martini? Sure! mixed drink? Sure! Wine? They've got you covered. There are rolls to die for and a great selection of desserts. So what's my favorite? They Playboy roll and let me tell you why! The roll itself is super yummy. It's got the right combination of ingredients and then it's wrapped in foil and set on fire right at your table. The result is a roll that tastes like it came right off the grill! Unique indeed! Here's the other element I like. When others order this roll, you see varying degrees of entertainment. I've seen a girl scream, usually people back away and since it takes a while to stop burning people usually don't know whether to blow it out or let it burn. After going for the first time two weeks ago, I've been back twice and and planning getting another dinner on the calendar now! The sushi is SO good. My wife and I ordered give different rolls and some nigiri. All of them were incredibly fresh and tasty. The drinks were stiff and the decor was fantastic. Likely going to become one of my downtown staples that isn't a steakhouse. Don't listen to anyone who mentions coming for Devour Downtown. There is a reason why they're only coming when the fare is discounted. read more

Honestly, its just okay. I have been to 45 degrees a few times, but I went for the last time this past Sunday. There is a lot of hype about their half priced sushi, so I thought I would check it out. I was unaware that everyone eating has to purchase a drink or a full priced menu item to get the half price sushi. Okay, only $2.50 for a drink no big deal. The sushi was just okay... nothing great. We ordered 4 roles. Philly, 45°, playboy & mount fiji roll. We had a few pieces (maybe 5-6) left over, that we intended to eat later because we were so full, no to go boxes allowed for half price sushi. If you care about the experience, and the location of it, just grabbing drinks & a roll with a friend... then maybe you will enjoy it. If you care about quality sushi, you can find much better and for a few $ cheaper. read more

Nothing special about 45 degrees... Had date night with the hubby here last night. I had the spicy tuna and soft crab rolls. The Tuna roll was OK but I prefer my spice sauce in the roll, not on top. Good nonetheless. The soft crab roll as recommend on Yelp was much better and very much enjoyed. Hubby, a non sushi eater, ordered the chicken Cesar salad which he said there was nothing outstanding about the dish, but good. There some spice to it which I enjoyed from what he shared. We both had a little bit of sticker shock from the prices of the non sushi entrees. Nevertheless, the decor was very nice, service was alright. I loved seating on the patio on a nice day office end of Mass Ave. I would not go out of my way to eat here. Not sure if we will be back. Overall, the food was just OK. read more
