Stopped here on the way from NYC to Boston. Very nice place to stop. Prices were a little bit higher than expected for a pub in the middle of nowhere. Service, food, and drinks were both great. Two IPA's on draft, sample both and they were good. Inside-out burger was perfect, I substituted the truffle cheese for cheddar, because I don't like truffle. The bbq-like sauce on the burger made it very tasty. Substituted the fries for tots, the tots were very crispy. Atmosphere is quiet and relaxed. read more

I like the outdoor deck overlooking the river, nice tables, lighting, but the food leaves much to be desired. The free chips were stale/soft. Recommend trying something different if they are difficult to keep crispy. The sauce on the taco special was terrible. Hate to say it, tastes like the chefs never bothered to taste what they put out. Worst tacos we've ever had. Menu prices are in general very high considering the quality. Don't think I'll come back unless they make some big changes to the food lineup as there are better options not far away. read more

We found the Foundry Kitchen & Tavern on Yelp after a hihe in the area, while looking for a unique place to eat. The Foundry got great reviews and the menu had a good variety of items to choose from. We split Short Rib Dumplings & the Inside Out Burger. Both were unique with great flavor. I brought my service dog and they were receptive to us sitting in the back patio. I stopped in with a friend after going to Shepaug Eagle watch which is about 10 minutes away in Southbury. There was a moderate crowd for a mid day on the Saturday after Christmas so there were plenty of choices for seating. We chose the bar, and ordered a couple of drinks. The bartender Andrew was very knowledgeable about bourbons and whisky when asked about the cask of bourbon sitting on the bar. My friend and I decided to split a smoked brisket sandwich which is served with coleslaw and fries. The kitchen cut the sandwich in half and it was served on one plate with a second plate on the side. The sandwich was a good size so there was plenty for two having a lunch time meal. The brisket was tasty and not too fancy. The restaurant has a new owner though the name did not change. This restaurant is located in the quaint village of Sandy Hook at the four road intersection. The building is quite historic with a long time presence next to the river. There is a deck overlooking the river which is a great spot for cool drinks in the summer and casual outside dining. There is a parking lot which is just a small walk away along the river. read more

Food was fine. However, in an empty restaurant our drinks took almost as long as the food, and when I pointed this out to the waitress, her response was, "I know right" with what felt like a shrug. I had gone into the restaurant from outside to see if something was causing the delay with our drinks. Perhaps the bar was full, I thought. This was not the case. People were cleaning while our drinks went unmade. It's hard to recover from a bad first impression and enjoy a meal when drinks take over 15 minutes. The food was probably good. I just couldn't appreciate it because of the substandard service. Before the ownership changed we were regulars, but after the change we stopped going because we felt the service and quality went down. We decided enough time had past that they deserved another chance, apparently not yet. read more

My wife and I travel with a German Shepard service animal. Unfortunately, the hosts repeatedly lectured us after we were seated alone. He said, "It was possible that someone could step on the dog." The dog wears a bright orange fluorescent orange vest. He kept suggesting we should move to another table; other guests were coming with reservations. Perhaps he should have thought of that before we were seated and dining. Even on the way out the door, as we were about to leave, The manager once again lectured us like idiots in a condescending tone. I wonder......... how he would act and feel if it was one of his family members treated in the same manner. I have crisscrossed the USA, and this was amongst the worst dining experiences, although the food and wait staff were acceptable. read more

Love love love! Craft cocktails were fantastic I had a bourbon jalapeño maple syrup martini. It was AMAZING. We had the truffle deviled eggs to start. They were so good I wanted to order another round. Shared the short rib crepes and avocado BLT. Both were fantastic. I loved the ginger coleslaw with the crepes. We sat outside and had a great view of the water. I wish I lived closer I would come here every day! Loved the potato sack curtains and kitchen utensils used as tap handles. Great service and excellent atmosphere. The food unfortunately did not pair up. While there was some great ideas there was an opportunity with taste and service size. We left hungry and wishing for more. The shrimp pasta was more peas than pasta or flavor. Presentation was great but my eyes brought big hopes. The overall experience was cozy but the menu left more to be desired. We are going to try it again because I believe I should have ordered the chicken based off of watching other tables orders. read more

My husband surprised me one evening and took me here. What a great place in Sandy Hook! I enjoyed a Strawbasil Fizz, while my husband had a NEBCO Coriolis. We shared the samosas and the wings! Both were delicious! The wings were ridiculously meaty!! I enjoyed the "inside out" burger but I also asked for the yucca fries instead of regular fries! WOW! I even had a little room for dessert, I decided to try the chocolate mousse. With its homemade whipped cream it was a great treat to end the meal!!! Delicious!!! Lisa and the staff were so attentive, our waters were always filled and someone was around if anyone needed anything. The music on the deck was great, very laid back and enjoyable. Impeccable both in quality food as well as service and ambiance, Foundry Kitchen and Tavern is a virtually flawless restaurant. For casual eats, this is hands down my favorite restaurant in the state. While our waiter was super awesome and I really enjoyed the cool antique building that the restaurant is located inside, I have to say the food here is really what impressed me. I had been hearing about this place for a while now and, frankly, it greatly surpassed my expectations. I came here with my brother for my mom's birthday and she said that it was one of the best meals she has ever had in in her life. Favorite dishes: 1) Brussel Sprouts with Miso Butter and Fried Shallots: Woah this was amazing. It was a special but I believe it is often on the menu because the waiter said people flip out over it a lot. Just crazy good. 2) Fish Tacos: Yum. Bright and fresh with a homemade salsa fresca and chipotle mayo as well as the best Yucca Fries I have ever eaten in my entire life. 3) Bread Pudding: Today it was Oreo Bread Pudding and it was absolutely awesome. I am not a big bread pudding person but this one was so good with these yummy pockets of melted oreo. 4) Pork Cheek + Hummus Starters (tie): Both are awesome appetizers and done especially well here. Rich, flavorful, and not too fatty pork and really delicious and light hummus. 5) Roast Chicken: While I didn't like this as much as the above courses it was a nice standard roast chicken with a good pan sauce and A LOT of awesome roasted veggies. They do not skimp here on portions. 6) Indonesian Street Cart Chicken: This was the only thing I tasted that I didn't exactly love but it was still solid and came with awesomely good fries. I think next time I will go with the octopus or shrimp starter rather than this. Anyway, this joint definitely lived up to the hype and I personally think it is way better than places like Caseus or Mikro (both of whom get wayyy more traffic, likely because they are in much more populous areas.) However if you are anywhere near this place definitely give it a try for lunch or dinner (the menus seem to be very similar). read more

Just by luck, on our way home, I looked at Yelp for a pick since we weren't from here. I went with the four star rating and I agree! We decided on this great night to sit outside. Great decision. So cozy. Our waitress was so polite. We told her we've been traveling and was so hungry . She quick brought over a assortment of bread. We didn't realize the kitchen closes at 9, and it was 8:59. She said no problem, take your time. We went on her suggestions and ordered the Fish Taco's, and the Inside out burger. Excellent choice! Very good. Really enjoyed the Yucca Fries. Reminded me of a knish. The fish taco's were topped with a mango salsa. So fresh. Great LOCAL BEER selection! I had a Vodka Rosemary and club soda. Big hit. Over all, I will be back!! Well this place is an absolute gem. Service was on point, live music, specials had people lining up at the door, and to top it off it was some of the best food I've had in the state. You'll have to Google some stuff like yuca fries, but otherwise it's all good and the chef will cater to your allergies and needs. No gluten, no dairy? Easy. They've even got a gluten free menu, but they changed some orders for us anyway. Great meal last night at Foundry! There was a wait for outside seating so we opted for indoors with live music from a solo singer who was very good. Food was excellent; farm to table salads, burgers, wings and fish tacos. And what made the night so enjoyable was our server, Kate. She was so welcoming, attentive, and on point with her recommendations. It reminded me how excellent service can make dining out such a good experience! Very happy with Foundrys. I have eaten here for dinner twice but wish I could be a regular here. Wallet won't allow, but it is worth the money when you go. Food: As a healthy foodie who also appreciated upscale pub fare this place executes farm-to-table perfectly. 1. Pork belly - it's my rule to order pork belly anytime it's on the menu. The pork was cooked perfectly and it had the best ratio of meat to fat to crust. The mango salsa on top was refreshing and balanced. 2. Short rib sandwich - oh my lawdy this was melt in your mouth good. The meat was tender and flavorful. It was wrapped in a soft flatbread which held together perfectly, a sandwich pet peeve of mine. Two guests at my party tried a bite and said, "I'm ordering that next time". Drink: The first time I came here I had a the whiskey drink with habanero bitters and it was so memorable I immediately ordered it my second visit. Foundry Rye Fashion. It was as good as the first time so I ordered a second. A lush, I know. Well the second one was extremely different. Two others in my party noticed it and confirmed it was a different type of rye whiskey - well - because it wasn't as good. Had I never tasted the original one I would have probably liked the different one a lot, but the inconsistency threw me off. And one cost $11. Atmosphere: Our party of 7 ate upstairs which,although smaller space, was much less crowded with tables. I love the wood tables, burlap wrapped candles, and overall space. Cost came out to about $100 for 1 app, 2 entrees, 4 drinks, and 20% tip and tax. Not bad at all. In a nutshell: Food is fresh and creative, service is friendly, atmosphere is Connecticut trendy farm hipster, and it's one of my favorite places for a special dining experience. read more

On a whim I took my sister out to lunch, She said we have to go to the Foundry and have their Risotto Fritters, well I was clueless on what these would be - lightly fried, creamy filling, sweet peas - OMG - hate to say my sister was right - they were wonderful! This is a nice little place, a local hangout with a very interesting menu. I had a simple salad and grilled shrimp and it was wonderful, the shrimp was cooked perfectly. A nice dressing - so well made! We treated ourselves and shared the carrot cake. We loved this creamy. tasty delight! Though we prefer raisins - but thats a family story for another time! I really liked the service. Everyone was friendly, attentive and caring! My napkin dropped to the floor, which I picked up, next thing I knwo the manager came by and replaced it. Wow! Newtown has some fine restaurants - the Foundry is a class of its own. Excellent food, delightful service, great ambiance. One thing is apoarent, the chef knows sauce. This location has had a few different restaurants over the years - all of them quite disappointing - until now. I absolutely loved the new Foundry. read more

We used to come frequently to this restaurant when it opened. Due to illness and then pandemic we hadn't been for over 2 years. At that point this place was incredible. Every plate was fabulous. We decided recently to go there for their fried chicken. It was awful- chicken very dry and the crust terrible. I would prefer to go to KFC. At least they know what they are doing. read more

We found our meals here were pretty hit and miss. I had the Gorgonzola burger and asked for it rare and I had the truffle tots. The burger was so dry that I thought it was over cooked (it was dark in the room) but near the end I realized it was red inside so I'm not sure why it was so dry. The bun is overbearing. It's so much bun that it takes away from the flavors of the burger and was likely part of what made it seem so dry. The toppings were fine but not enough to feel it was worth $18. The tots, on the other hand, were awesome. My only regret is not getting plain tots. You can go overkill on truffle and these smelled so much like feet that it made them tough to want to put them in my mouth. The tots themselves though were so crispy and had just a perfect mouth feel. I was burping feet taste long after the meal. My husband got the strip steak. He said it was fine, but again was underwhelmed for the price. It was tasty but not exciting. He did say it was tender for a strip and overall he enjoyed it. We also had a toddler with us, and I could tell that's not exactly their target audience, but they do have a kids menu so I had to add that I was super surprised that the kids burgers were the same size as the adult burgers. That's not a complaint, but it must lead to a lot of wasted food. The burgers there are the size of salad plates. My daughter loved the fries and ate maybe a 10th of the giant burger. Not bad for a toddler. Drinks were great, obviously their bartender is on point. Overall it was a fine meal, but if we came back to town we wouldn't be craving to come back and would likely try another restaurant. read more

3 stars for the food/5 stars for service/5 stars for the venue. We ate at the Foundry on a Friday, arriving at about 6pm and had only a 15minute wait for an outside table. Great view over the Pootatuck River. Love the atmosphere. Appetizers were terrific. We shared the calamari and loved the korean ketchup (so over marinara sauce often served with calamari). We also had the Bacon Bleu Skins -- really good flavors, loaded with blue cheese. Entrees were mixed. I love fish tacos, but as other reviewers have noted, the fish tacos here are luke-warm at best and the tortillas are thin so they fall apart easily with all the toppings loaded on. I ended up eating them with fork and knife. Loved the yucca fries and they were especially good dipped in the taco sauce. Husband had the Inside Out Burger which he liked, but it was pretty rare for ordering it medium. Son had the 24 Hr Short Ribs and Bacon Mac & Cheese which he devoured, so I assume it was good. The specialty menu drinks were just okay. I ordered a Szechuan Gin Martini (the only gin-based drink listed) and expected somethig bold and spicy. The drink was okay -- but no real taste of peppers or gin. I later ordered a Sapphire martini and it was excellent! Son ordered a specialty bourbon-based drink (can't remember the name) with maple syrup and jalapeno; again, there was little evidence of the pepper and so the drink was really sweet. Okay, but not as expected. Husband enjoyed the Captain Lawrence Pale Ale. Overall, a pleasant burthday celebration and we will return to try more of the menu offerings! read more

Although the atmosphere was cute, the food at the Foundry Kitchen and Tavern really missed the mark for me. I came here for dinner with my family and we ordered the Fattoush Salad, Hawaiian Salad, and Vegan Bahn Mi Sandwich to share. While the salads were okay (sorta one dimensional in flavor), the Bahn Mi Sandwich was literally flavorless. To make matters worse, the "sriracha" veganaise that came with it tasted almost like a sweet icing, which was really disappointing. For dessert, we ordered a Carrot Cake which was also different than expected as it was extremely dense (almost like a fudgy brownie in texture.) Overall, had high hopes but ultimately did not think the food / experience was worth the price. read more
