Had to throw away the ice cream it was so bad. My mom ordered a peanut butter chip chocolate ice cream and the artificial peanut butter flavor was too intense to eat more than 2 bites. I got the grasshopper sundae, and literally had to spit it out, the crème de minthe was poured on top of chocolate ice cream a little too heavily, and the chocolate ice cream underneath was also just bad. The staff were extremely nice and diligent, but I was worried the overly-crowded conditions they were working in could have been violating some sort of workers rights laws, or at least capacity ones. read more

We went to Four Seas tonight. Though there was a line, the wait was short and the staff was friendly. However, we ordered a small butter crunch in a cup. What showed up was a very small scoop of ice cream and we were charged $4.50.The butter crunch was really terrible. Bland, and little indication that butterscotch even existed in it. Ice cream eaters beware. I have been spending time during the summer on the Cape since I was a little girl and part of that tradition was going to Four Seas, ordering mint chip every time only after waiting in the line that consistently goes out the door. I now have young children and have less patience to wait in line with children, but having given Four Seasons a break for quite some time (we found Gone Chocolate in Osterville and it's fantastic) we decided to give it a try again tonight. The "we" included my two children and a friend. We ended up there because one of my sons thought we should try somewhere new. On our drive over I explained the tradition my family and I had of going there so I was excited to share something from my childhood with my own children. Plus the ice cream was always great---not necessarily the best ever, but it was Four Seas--a Cape Cod institution, so it had to be great! The line was tolerable but as I remembered the ordering "system" was chaotic. I ordered my usual mint chip. The young man who scooped the ice cream said it was sort of soft and I told him that was ok because I try not to be too high maintenance about things and only send food back when it is not edible. Well, I took two bites and it was not edible. Clearly the ice cream had gone bad as it had a rancid after taste. My older son found a piece of something in his---not sure if it was plastic but it was something that absolutely should not have been in there. Our friend could not eat hers as there was dirt in it and no, this was not some Oreo-type ice cream. It was a fruit sorbet. We returned my son's, and his next dish had a big chunk of ice in it. We didn't even give my younger son a chance to eat any further. We left and went right back to Gone Chocolate. I will say too that having not been to Four Seas for a while I was struck by how dirty/sticky the place seemed. And it smelled bad too. It's sad to me that a place that I associate with summer and family on the Cape will simply stay a memory. Thank goodness there are places like Gone Chocolate, where I can make new memories with my family. First call tomorrow is to the Board of Health to report on tonight's unsanitary and unhealthy experience. read more

Heard about this place from multiple people. Really good ice cream, but I was over charged ($40 for 3 small and 3 medium, when in reality it should've been $27). It was super crowded so my family and I didn't have time to double check the price. Also, there are no waffle cones and in order to get two different flavors, you need to get a large. You should really consider getting cash registers or calculators for the employees. Overall mediocre experience. read more

One word - YUM!!!!!! The ice cream is fabulous and I love the quaint old building. The pink peppermint is my absolute favorite but the coconut was a close second. It was so good I came there on my last day on the Cape and had a hot fudge sundae for lunch. I've been going to Four Seas for over 30 years and it's always been one of my go to places. My wife and I stopped by over the weekend and were shocked at the reduced portions being served. Usually a medium-size waffle cone is so spilling out the top that you have to begin eating immediately. This time you could barely see the ice cream inside the cone! We love this little place, know the quality is superb and know how hard the staff works. We always tip generously. As a Cape Codder for 21 Years I have always been a Sundae School Veteran, however my friends from school raved about Four Seas Ice Cream. Because, I decided to give it a go. After visiting on quiet night with lots of fast service, I have to say I am completely unimpressed with this establishment. The inside was rather dirty and the floor was slanted and disleveled (making it a huge danger zone for children and the elderly). The ice cream was good, but it was nothing to tell your friend about. 4 Seas proudly frames all their honors and awards on the wall (all of which I don't understand how they won). I would rather drive 45 minutes to Sundae School than come here for ice cream, heck I would rather save my money and get a chocolate vanilla twist at the nearest McDonald's than visit here again. #TouristTrap read more

Having lived around the corner from Four Seas since way back when, we know it is truly a summertime institution. We have witnessed the family's losses and sorrow. The ice cream has even been shipped to far off places for birthday celebrations. The cantaloupe was a favorite in 1969, but cranberry sherbet has since taken over as number one. Many quarts of coconut, chocolate almond, mocha and chocolate chip have also graced our freezer. Our summer visitors often experience a smorgasbord of blue ice cream containers lined up on the dining room table and adding their favorites butter crunch, caramel or butter pecan. On occasion peppermint stick or black raspberry will make an appearance. My grandfather years ago would like to treat us to sundaes and referred them as college ice. Fast forward to a summer with less COVID restrictions. The prices for pints and quarts have gone sky high while the consistency has plummeted. The ice cream isn't even hand packed and is now packaged in a plain white container with a simple sticker. Where did the iconic blue Fours Sea's container go - raise prices and cut cost? Twice this summer I had to return quarts; one blueberry yogurt because it was all frosted over and slimy inside and the other cranberry sherbet because it was all melty and dripping. The servers scooping ice cream, all high school kids, are still a delight. Disappointingly though Four Seas aura seems to have diminished. read more

Growing up, summer never really started until 4 Seas opened. My sister and I would spend the ride there arguing who would get which flavor, as it was unspoken rule between us that we weren't allowed to get the same one. I still dream of their cantaloupe ice cream, their cranberry sherbet, their peppermint stick (penuche!, ginger!, fresh peach!, sigh...). Few things in life are absolutely true. One of the rare exceptions is that Four Seas makes the greatest ice cream in the world. Four Seas, you silence the mysteries of the ages with your humble ice cream cone. All becomes quiet and simple in its presence. Such is the atmosphere that surrounds perfection. Such is the nature of eternal truth. This is not Baskin Robbins or even Ben & Jerry's, so the few novelty flavors that appear on the menu are probably there just to pacify the toddlers and the tourists. Locals know to start with Chip Chocolate (which was supposedly invented at Four Seas), and explore the fruit flavors when available (Cantaloupe, Peach, Strawberry). Penuche Pecan is an eclectic original, and it's good. My family also likes Chocolate, Ginger and Coconut. Vanilla is great, as it should be everywhere else but rarely is. They also make a mean lobster salad sandwich for sit-down customers! Additionally, like summer itself, a Four Seas cone is mercurial and will melt if you don't keep up with it. Some complain it's served too soft; maybe so, but the demand is non-stop and this makes it hard to keep the freezer doors shut. I have never seen an ice cream shop with this level of demand, and I don't want them to remodel the place (or lower the butterfat content) in order to serve the tourists a rock hard ice cream cone. If you really want it as hard as Breyers, get a pint to go and stick in in your freezer for a while. Oh, and bring cash. Grew up anticipating the large chunk of dark chocolate inside your large scoop of ice cream. Not so much today with the tiny chips of chocolate. Too commercialized now. We go to Polar Cave in Cotuit. Just to make this clear we brought our quart of chocolate chip back to four seas and asked about the super small chips and the employee stated that they were using a new vendor and that was the size of their chips. I like Four Seas for a few things. First and foremost, great staff. Imagine, crew that can actually add math and make change in their head without punching into a register. An oddity these days. Even if there is a long line, they are well staffed and will knock it down in short order. Second, the ice cream tastes delicious, especially the fruit flavors. My lack of being able to give Four Seas five stars is the fact that their ice cream is ALWAYS too warm and instantly melted. I don't like not being able to finish a small cone before it is entirely melted. I know they are busy and the cooler tops are constantly open, but other ice cream shops figure it out. I paid $7.25 and let the server keep the rest of the $10.00 because i wanted to show support for a small business that is important to the community. It's not the price of the ice cream that bothered me. the cost is probably in line with all other products being served/ sold on the Cape during this season. What fried my backside was receiving a small dish of ice cream that was probably no more than 2 & a half Dixie cups worth of ice cream for my trouble. There are way more important things than kvetching over the size of an ice cream in this day & age, so i kept my mouth shuttook my ice cream back to my car and enjoyed what little there was of it. The ice cream was good, but i'll patronize another ice cream shop that has a less storied history and is hungrier for business when i go back to the area later this summer. My wife suggested Four Seas rename their product "virtual ice cream", as there is "virtually nothing" in the dish or cone that they serve you. read more

The peppermint chip is amazing. Four Seas is also a great place to go for the atmosphere. There will be a long line pretty much any night you go. But, it moves fast. Also, be prepared for a a lot of dock shoes, polo shirts and nautical themed belts. read more

This is the ice cream of my childhood, and will forever have a place in my heart. Every summer we would go to Four Seas Ice Cream (as many times as we possibly could) and get several scoops of this insanely good ice cream. My mom once spent $100 on shipping a few pints of this ice cream to my dad, who had to stay home for some reason. And he said it was worth every penny. Now, in other reviews I might have mentioned that something else was "my favorite dessert" - but understand that ice cream is in a category of its own for me. I love ice cream. Probably more apt to say I have a love affair with ice cream. And Four Seas Ice Cream is the 10 out of 10. Coconut, Chocolate, Cantaloupe, and Peach. The 4 flavors that I think are the absolute best. A gigantic bowl of these 4 flavors is probably my death row meal. They're incredible. Super creamy. Intense flavor. The peach ice cream is more peachy than a peach has every been. The coconut whisks you away to the tropics. The chocolate is velvety dark magical perfection. And a scoop of the cantaloupe is that perfect summer, in a cone. Yeah, you have to wait in line. Yeah, it's sort of a hectic ordering system. But none of that matters once you taste this ice cream. You'll be able to die happy having had this ice cream. It's heaven. I don't eat ice cream as a general rule, but damn Gina, this ice cream is GOOD!!! The line outside should tell you a little about the popularity of the Four Seas and you definitely should jump right into it no matter how long it is. It moves fast, don't you worry about it! My friends loved the rum butter, cantelope, strawberry & caramel cream. I stuck to vanilla, which we brought home in a quart with the intention to eat it with some apple pie. Yeah, I know vanilla sounds boring, but let me assure you that this is some of the most delicious vanilla ice cream I've ever had. The pie wasn't even touched because everyone just ate the vanilla ice cream alone. It was THAT good! You know you'll be on the Cape at some point this summer, so instead of wasting your time at other ice cream establishments, make the trek to Four Seas, you definitely won't be disappointed! read more

Old school ice cream shop. Outside of beaches, golfing, and clam shacks, this is what it means to live Cape Cod. Located close to the warmer waters of Hyannis, Centerville, and Osterville, this place is always packed. On holiday weekends, expect a long wait. The popularity of 4 Seas has grown to such a cult following that it is also sold in local stores and cafes. The parking lot directly next to it is a bit small, but there is a neighboring lot as well. The creaky building always seems to have a broken door. There is no register or specific order spot. All the signs seem like they were made 20 years ago. All part of the charm. Ordering is done at the small bar counter. The majority of staff is made up of local high school kids, running frantically around. There are stools to take a seat right at the bar. Classic meal to have is a lobster salad sandwich and a sundae. There is a fairly long list of flavors. However, there aren't particularly many options in the soft serve and sugar free section. Also, there's no cookies and cream. That for me is a killer. Since they fail to add this flavor year after year (even though they have flavors of the week and surveys for new flavors), I usually resort to vanilla. The vanilla here is pretty strong. Almost like french vanilla. I recommend that you get ice cream here and not in a to-go pint or quart. The pre-packaged ice cream just doesn't seem as fresh. Perhaps its just the experience of eating at the shop or because the ice cream straight from the freezer is a bit too hard at first and doesn't taste as fresh. Overall, I can see why it is a favorite for many, but I prefer The Ice Cream Sandwich in Sandwich or even JP Licks in Boston (they have so many cookies and cream variations!) read more

TWO IMPORTANT TIPS BEFORE YOU GO: 1) Order your shakes/root bear floats/other drinks to-go even if you are eating in...because the large glass cup they serve it in for dining in is tiny, and the large to-go cup is huge so you get a lot more for your money. 2) Stay away from the sandwiches. This is not their specialty. Their lobster sandwich is OK but it is served on wheat bread instead of a roll which is a little weird. And the only other sandwich I had there was the egg sandwich - also OK but they can't toast your bread and don't even have lettuce or tomato to go on it. Their ice cream is beyond delicious (and if you don't think so, you probably got one of the "new" flavors...I'm just saying, at a shop that is 75 years old you don't order peanut butter or cookie dough. You get a classic.) The staff has always and will always be the best, because they are honors high school students who were invited to work there. The building itself is an adorable shack of a soda shoppe and the line is usually out the door...which, by the way, is part of the charm. Four Seas is classic. The freezes are excellent as well as the Lobster sandwich. The ice cream is really, really good. When I stay with my grandma and cousins on Cape Cod during the summer, Four Seas is one place we go a couple times a week. Plus its right near Craigville beach, so if you don't want to go to The Barnacle or the The Snack Shake, Four Seas is a great place to go to pickup ice cream or sandwiches and then walk down to the beach. I know the locals rant and rave about this ice cream- so we had to stop and try. Not really a fan. The chocolate chip cookie dough I got, tasted so much like frosting it was kind of gaggy, also the employees serving you were not the friendliest. They pretty much just scream out to the crowd "whose next" instead of just addressing the next person in line. You also can't get two flavors- like I wanted a scoop of choc chip cookie dough and vanilla and that was not allowed. Suggestion: try Gone Chocolate on Main St in Osterville- creamy and way more ice cream for your $$ & they treat you like a real customer! read more
