I love to go here for their fruit teas with popping boba! Each time I get it, it's always perfect! I like that some of them have bits of fruit pieces in it as well. Although I enjoyed their fruit teas, their milk teas are not my cup of tea. Maybe it's the type of milk they use that kind of overpowers the drink as well as makes it very light in sweetness and flavor. They have tables for people to sit and enjoy their drinks and snacks. I went to visit Akira Coffee & Tea with some friends and was pretty excited considering I'm a big fan of boba. It's a small little shop where you place an order through the tablets and then wait for them to put your drink up through this small window. You don't really get to see the workers and they don't see you since it's a wall in between everyone. It's nice for people who just want to get a drink without talking to anyone. However, there wasn't any way in the system to mix flavors and with nobody to talk to, I just had to go with what I saw. I ordered a pineapple slushie with strawberry boba. I mainly wanted a strawberry pineapple slushie and decided to get the flavored boba since there wasn't an option for me to combine flavors in the slushie. It cost me $6.75 after tip and taxes so it's very affordable. They're fairly quick with the orders which is nice because you don't have to wait very long. My pineapple slush great and I'll definitely be back for one in the future! However, the strawberry boba ruined it. I ordered it because I thought it would add a good flavor to it and not be the type that pops in your mouth. I'm not a fan of that type of boba and prefer it to be more like those tapioca pearls. Some friends and I stopped by here on our way back from Folsom. The shop was super quaint and the employees were very friendly. Pretty standard drinks that were made per our preferences. We all went with 0% sweet and didn't wind up with something that was too sweet, which seems to be a pretty common issue. The sweetness from the boba syrup was more than enough. Not much to report here besides this seems to be a reliable boba shop that makes consistent drinks and has awesomely friendly service. Akira recently opened so I decided to give it a try. I was recommended the taro milk tea and added boba. The taro flavor isn't as intense as I like but it was alright. I think the boba is above average, as it's sweetened with brown sugar and has a good balance of chew and firmness. The guy working here let me sample my drink to find the desired sweetness level so that was much appreciated! New owner at this location who brought in more drink options including coffee/latte menu + milk tea menu. The plus is that they now allow you to adjust the sweetness level of your drinks, so 1 star there. They have a small fridge by the cash register with Japanese desserts like Millie crepe, creme brûlée, yokult drink and Japanese cheese cakes. They also have other little snacks (ie pringle chips, etc) you can purchase, but no hot foods or popcorn chicken that you often see in other boba shops. I really tried to like this place. Came here on 3 separate occasions to give it a fair test. Drinks are lacking in flavor and richness. I feel that I can make a lot of their drinks myself at home. Their boba was just ok, not too sweet but also not too QQ (aka, chewy). The matcha latte tasted like it was made from powder since it had grittiness texture to it. The coffee milk tea lacked coffee flavor. I was still sleey after drinking this. I would say the best drink I've gotten would probably be the Roasted oolong milk tea, which did have a decent tea flavor. I got the mille crepe, which was just ok... tasted like any store bought/pre-packaged dessert. Minus one star for slow service. Only 1 barista who makes the drinks and also minds the register. Gave this place a chance twice already and I will not be coming back. These drinks are horrible and expensive. First time I got a coconut drink with boba added - very icy and flavorless. My sister ordered a drink and she only took one sip and had to throw the rest away. Second time I got a taro drink with boba. I subbed coconut milk (which I think was extra), but I could tell it was not coconut milk when I received the drink. Service is also slow and rude. read more

I recently just found out about this boba place in Davis. I got a strawberry milk tea the first time I went there, I would say there drinks are pretty sweet, but still very decent. Do adjust the level if you want it to be less sweet. Customer service was on spot, they were very nice. The drinks didn't take long to make. My second time I went there I adjust the sugar level too 50% for the strawberry milk tea, but somehow it was still very sweet. I'm not sure if there drink is just somewhat always sweet even if you adjust the sugar, but I still liked it either way. Customers service is still great. Akira takes over this location and offers their take on teas. They serve both hot and cold milk teas as well as coffee beverages. Though I'd say that is is a boba place... it doesn't feel like one. It actually has a more coffee house vibe to it. Aside from coffee you can get little Asian pre-packaged snacks from a little cold space near the register. They have nice cakes and pastries that you can select from. The food in there reminds me of those little Asian markets in downtown Davis that have similar items. You won't be finding things like popcorn chicken or gyoza here. The do, however, have instant ramen available in a cup if you so desire. I ordered a coconut milk tea and my friend got a matcha smoothie. The order took a little while to get to us, but it may have been because the person ahead of us ordered 4 drinks and there was only one person behind the counter. But nonetheless it was a longer wait that it should have been. What was nice though was that the barista brought over a sample of the coconut milk tea to me in a cup for me to taste the sweetness. And it was spot on. When the drinks came I found my drink to have a perfect sweetness but felt a bit too milky for my liking. It was more like a coconut milk and I couldn't get the tea aspect of it. I have been ordering tea here for a long time, but usually ordering through app. Today I passed by Akira and wanted a boba tea so I walked into the place and ordered via its POS (or iPad). I selected my boba tea which is $5.5, and didn't select anything extra, then it jumped to total $7.2. I was wondering why it's so expensive, maybe the boba tea is $5.95 or $6.5? Whatever I paid for it and thought I would look at the receipt. The iPad couldn't print receipt so I selected email me. Later I looked at my email and found there was 15% tip charge. There were no prompts asking you "no tip, 10%, 15%, 20%" on the iPad. It just automatically charged you 15%! The whole time I was in the store, there was no human interaction: I ordered tea on iPad, waited, went to the front counter and looked for my tea by the number hanging on the tea. (2 stars) Once had bingsoo and it was pretty good, though. I liked that I could get a smaller sized bingsoo than most places and the texture/flavors/toppings were proportioned well (4 stars). Service: You have to order at a kiosk and the staff barely acknowledge you exist. I'm not really a fan of this level of service, but I guess I get it. I would just ask that signs make that clear, or directing staff to let customers know to order on the kiosks, because one time I was standing in line waiting to order and a couple girls walked right in front of me and placed an order at the kiosk. Hand sanitizer was available by the entrance. I like that they also have hand sanitizer on each table outside. Clean customer area inside, but as another Yelper mentioned, you can see supplies and recyclables or trash, waiting to be taken out, behind the counter in the employee-only area. Not many customers in the late afternoon on a weekend. You can order on one of three self-service kiosks. The cost of their drinks fall around the lower end of the typical range, between $4-5.50 without any additions. The ETA for one drink and the karage was 15 minutes. I received a text that my order was done at ETA, but it wasn't actually ready and came out a few minutes later. I selected the "with a bag" option, but my order came without one. The staff did ask me if I needed any forks, which is considerate but utensils should be a given for non-finger foods...? The karage comes with katsu sauce. The chicken can be good on its own for a bit, but the flavor does get old without any sauce. The lychee green tea was just okay, I wouldn't order it again. Some of the popping boba was already popped, so I would occasionally get a boba skin with a sip. The flavor of the peach popping boba was lost in the drink. read more

I came inside and there was a little kiosk where I could order and pay. I wish more places were like this because it made ordering so easy. I ordered 4 different drinks to share with my friends on Doordash (because they were 80% off) and NONE of them were even close to mediocre, even less so good (2 based on the Yelp review recommendations and 2 based on the Store/Doordash recommendations). All drinks were %100 sugar. The two based on Yelp recommendations: 1) Galaxy Milk + Crystal Boba + [(optional) Sea Salt Foam] - (2/5): The MOST disgusting part was the crystal boba because the texture felt like chewing on a chunk of the inside of your gums: it was plasticky and gelatinous. It did not have a nice refreshing aftertaste like lychee jelly or the fun chewiness of normal boba. The milk was really sweet and boring: if this was considered the "right amount of 'light sweetness'" in comparison to the brown sugar fresh milk drink, then that must taste like diabetes. 2) Taro Lover - (2/5): I love Taro flavors, but this was not it. I did not like the dry bits of the drink (kinda like the texture of sweet yam or potato) and I only felt the Taro milk taste after each sip. The regular boba was ok. The two based on Store/Doordash recommendations: 3) The Hulk - (1.5/5): It's just water and powdered matcha. There was no milky sweetness and it felt closer to skim milk. The regular boba was ok. 4) Iced peach melon green tea - (2.5/5): While iced tea drinks are normally very refreshing and mildly sweet, this was really perfumy and overbearing. It tasted like green tea, but not like peach or melon. My mouth felt drier and drier as I drank it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TL;DR: I am an AVID Davis boba drinker and overall, this place is normally expensive (~$5.67) for something that tastes extremely perfumy and overbearing. This place is definitely a quantity-over-quality place like iTea. However, the drinks are not marketed with visual aesthetics like iTea: it looks generic and it's nothing too impressive or bad (which is why I didn't bother taking a picture). I would recommend asking for less sugar and after ordering 4 popular drinks, I wonder how horrid the other menu items are. Ohh, well, I can pay by card. She points to screen. Now, I personally like in person service because I can simple questions like What is popular, For example. Now, the service is nice. However, the name of drinks is intriguing and I enjoyed that. I believe drinks come in one size but they ask you all you can think of for a drink. Sweet level? Ice? milk substitute? Now, I purchased a drink that looked more nice in the picture than in real life. What happened to the nice blue color that looks like a chemist made? To my disappointment, it's difficult to turn up your desired saturation in real life than it is through Photoshop. So sad. Due to this hiccup, I find coping with reality much harder than I thought. If you are looking for a delicious treat....this is it! They have teas, smoothies and slushies that are so good and refreshing. They even sell macaron ice cream which we can't get enough of. They also have food. I tried the Takoyaki and it was magical. I had every intention of trying all their food but after trying the Takoyaki, I just keep ordering it. This place is always super clean, the atmosphere is very chill and the staff is always nice and helpful.
