I'm big on Customer Service! I just read some of the other reviews and it varies between saying that the cashier is very nice to saying that they are rude as hell. My experience spans over about a six or seven year period. The cashier lady is rude as sh*t but I don't really think she can help it. I am referring to the older Jamaican lady. Her tone is always that of, "what you want". I know part of it is cultural and I just accept it. Even though she wears a mask (2020 - present 2022), you can always see her furrowed brow and disgruntled disposition sparkling through. I really can't make this up. I used to be a regular in terms of a couple times a week and I remember actually seeing her smile back in 2015, the one and only time. She really reminds you of a scene from one of those Instagram skits of service at Jamaican restaurants. You're probably asking, well why did you keep going there if you didn't like the service? I really like stopping in and grabbing patties and it was pretty decent and convenient in the Edgewood Ave area. Patties are great and plantains are hit or miss. Sometimes they're really plump, juicy and sweet and other times they are dried out. I posted a picture of some dried out plantains below. After mentioning it to her at the register she just looked at me as if oh well you paid for them so they're yours. No effort was made to replace them. I can't really vouch for the other food. I frequent Jamaican restaurants but I only go to certain ones for certain things. This is not my full meal spot so I'm unable to state whether it's delish or not. I'm sure it's probably not bad. Had the jerk chicken, which was amazing. The fried plantain was good, but a bit sweet compared to the ones I've had in Africa. The beef pastry was no good, it had the consistency of refried beans inside and was not crispy. I would definitely come back. Visited this hole in the wall while visiting the distillery down the street. The cashier was very friendly in helping me figure out what I should probably get. My buddy got a sorrel drink and curry chicken platter. My buddy let me try his sorrel drink. It was quite good. I also got to try the chicken. Super good and almost made me regret my decision. I got the jerk chicken sandwich and a curry chicken patty, and a side of sweet plantains. I thought the sandwich was decent, but a little dry. The patty's curry chicken wasn't as flavorful as my buddy's platter. Plantains were as good as one would expect. I washed it all down with a Jamaican Pineapple Ginger soda. The oxtails dinner wasn't good at all‼they wasn't cooked to the fullest where the meat falls off the bone, the meat was on the bone like a very well done steak, the texture was tough and chewy and very flavorless. Needed a fast & small, yet solid meal while making my way around ATL. Someone hipped me to this spot so I pulled up my yelp app, reviewed a few photos, and gave it a go. I parked on the street, dropped a quarter in the meter, and went inside. I'm always disappointed when small places like this don't keep the place fresh looking. I'm so over the "hole in the wall" thing. A damp rag, a bucket filled with industrial cleaner, a $27 gallon of paint from Home Depot...it takes so little. I've grown increasingly impatient with businesses that show little regard for how they present themselves. Respect me enough to keep it nice! Anyway, the woman at the counter was pleasant. I wanted sorrel, but they were still making it, so opted for soursop instead. Too sweet and syrupy, but at 102 degrees outside, it lasted about 18 secs. The coco bread tasted like it was made from scratch within the previous hour. It's absurd that growing up eating tons of Caribbean food in NYC, I would find some of the best coco bread I've had in my life in Atlanta, GA....the "dirty south". The callaloo patty also had to have been made right there in the kitchen. Most restaurants buy them in bulk from somebody's granny, freeze them, and sell them as needed by the day. These tasted nothing of the sort. Overall, a delicious and satisfying meal with great quality ingredients. DO NOT SPEND MONEY HERE!!!!!! ZERO STARS!!!! The owners daughter/register lady is CONSISTENTLY rude and offers EXTREMELY POOR customer service. Upon my first experience I was met with an attitude and a lack of communication about the food offered as a novice to Jamaican cuisine. I waived the experience as a fluke and kept it moving. Today, however, was the LAST TIME my family and I will EVER spend money within the walls of this restaurant. Once again the lady at the register offered HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE and absolutely no human under. Like literally robotic. Today my brother purchased an Irish Moss drink for $4. After opening it and taking a sip, he re-capped the drink and set it atop the bar-style counter that breaks away from the front counter. Moments later the drink falls to the floor due to no fault of his own. We then realized the bar-style counter was extremely unstable which created a slanted counter top, which is responsible for my brother's drink falling to the floor. When my brother communicated what happen the lady claimed that not only would she not replace the drink but also pressed the idea that the issue is not "common" and that he would need to buy ANY OTHER drink in the restaurant. She then stood EXTREMELY FIRM behind her idea and that there is no one else to speak to regarding the matter. My brother thoroughly insisted that he talk to someone hire up to which her answer was that they would tell us the same thing she said. After another 5 minute back and forth conversation she eventually called her father to the front. Within 60 seconds my brother's drink was compensated. After 10 minutes of back and forth the issue was resolve with one head nod from the owner. The idea that we can spend $100 in a sitting and cannot be compensated for a $4 drink is the most ridiculous thing I've dealt with in a long time. I'm sure this place will last beyond this review but NO ONE in our network of friends and family will EVER return to support this business. Support for black owned businesses needs to be held accountable by the service to its customers. This is unacceptable. Counter Lady, if you're reading this, your energy is off. That energy affects the world. Stop affecting the world with negativity. Remove yourself from the counter and enlist someone who's energy is more accommodating to customers. It's called customer service. You are literally at the counter to service us. To the owner, all respects for this great black-owned business. The food is good and pushed out quick. The problem is not with you but with your daughter (or granddaughter). She is not who needs to be up front. If your positive attitude was in front I guarantee that you'd have more return customers. Let me first start by saying the lady at the front counter was nice. That's all. I've heard good things about the restaurant so when I was in the area I decided to give them a try. Ok so I ordered the jerk chicken during lunch time like 1p and the best thing on my plate were the greens by far and they were ok (I don't care for stems but I'll eat them). My chicken tasted like it was cooked yesterday or possibly two days prior and reheated. My rice and peas weren't all that great either )probably added water and reheated idk). I had to force what I could down and still left ample food on my plate. I'm not by any means a picky eater but I can tell when something isn't fresh. I don't leave reviews especially bad ones but I was VERY dissatisfied. I won't EEEEVER be back. I wasted my $10 most definitely. I'll just stick to my usual Jamaican spots. read more

Worst Caribbean food n experience I've had. Their oxtails only came with 4 pieces of meat and it cost 22.00 the meal doesn't come with plantains it's 3.00 more. They gave me the wrong rice and I had to pay more because according to them it was already online the box ...so customer services was trash and I was so pissed I sent so much money and I hated the food the oxtails had SKIN I've never had oxtails with so much FAT n any skin for that matter. This is a tiny hole in a wall next to the municipal market. We came in on a Sunday at 12:45pm and there were 7 people waiting ahead of us by the door; it turns out they only open at 1pm and it must be great food if people line up for it. Well; 1pm finally came and when I turned around another 8 people were lined up behind us. We ordered two patties (spicy beef and regular chicken) and they were both piping hot and by the apparent taste and freshness, probably had just come out of the back oven Next came the oxtail with cabbage and yellow rice; fall of the bone and out of this world tasty and tender. The jerk chicken platter with greens and rice&peas were equally delicious and fall of the bone, oooof yes, now I can see why people line up to have a taste of this small kitchen!! Skip some of the sides that were not that great; mac n cheese side was just kraftdinner with melted cheese; nothing to rant and rave about; the plantins were lumpy and ok, nothing special - so save your appetite for The main staples goodness. Some yester-stars have been through this joint over the years: above the till amongst the commotion of ordering at the front counter, and the people line up behind me; I noticed an autographed poster of one hit wonder Sean Kingston of "fire burning" fame amongst a few hanging on the walls. Felt when she handed me the bag that one of the patties was hard as a rock thru the paper bag so i asked her to switch the HARD CALALOO patty for another VEGGIE patty. She took the next customer and told me to wait as if she would take care of me. Then when she got back to me, she would not switch the CALALOO patty out for the VEGGIE patty i asked for. She said it was too late to switch it out as if i walked out the store and came back (which I did not) I literally stood in front of her waiting the whole time so there wouldn't be any problems! Mac and cheese- is cheese microwaved on top of butter noodles. Veggie patty- typical previously frozen, reheated vegetable patty. Veggie platter- curry cabbage, freshly steamed collards, rice and peas with brown stew gravy and yams. It was okay. Taste like normally Jamaican food. This alone was worth $8.50 and deserves 4 stars Plantains- sweet, kinda greasy, but ripe and soft like I love it Fried tofu Veggie Roti- this was my boyfriends dish and it was great until we got to the part with the fried tofu. This place is a good option for Jamaican food if you're in the city. There are only 2 tables so it is not ideal for dining in. We ordered the oxtails and curry goat for lunch. The oxtails were good, but the curry goat was delicious. We also ordered a side of the mac and cheese, and it was highly disappointing. It tasted like boiled noodles, with semi-melted shredded cheese on top. Listen, this was my second stop in Atlanta - searching for curry chicken and roti. I did not care that their parking lot can only carry five cars and I had to park on the street. Note to self: before visiting a restaurant, make sure it's open for lunch on the weekend. That's what I thought when I pulled on the locked door of Noni's last week. On the bright side, this oversight gave me the chance to visit The Original Jamaican Restaurant, a place I've seen countless times, but never entered. Growing up, I had a friend Andrew, who was born in Jamaica. Between the 4th to 7th grade, Andrew, white guy Brian, and myself composed a living Benetton ad, eating each other's parents' weird foods, throwing lit firecrackers at each other, practicing our break dancing, and generally making nuisances of each other. Oh and playing Atari. Lots and lots of Atari. Andrew drank neon colored drinks that was very different from the soft drinks I were familiar with. I was both fascinated and frightened of these drinks. Fascinated because, hell, they were neon. Frightened because they weren't Coke or Pepsi. (Actually, I was equally frightened of the Coke knockoff, Chek Cola, that my mom would buy from Winn Dixie and use to stock out pantry.) As I grew older, I learned what these drinks were and that they were indeed a bit of home for Jamaicans, almost as much a bit of home for Andrew's parents as the 50 pound bags of rice my mom would have me carry in from her minivan whenever she visited the Asian market. By the time we reached high school, Andrew and I had drifted apart as kids do when they reach high school. I don't know what happened to that kid, but I think back to those neon drinking days with fondness. We were dumb boys and for probably the only times in our lives, allowed to be just that. And that's what I thought of when I noticed that this place had those same neon Jamaican soft drinks available in 2 liter bottles. They also had all sorts of other Jamaican goods which, were I Jamaican, would be useful to me. But, other than microwaving frozen beef patties, I know better than to try to cook such cuisine because I would suck at it. As it was, I went ahead and ordered lunch from them. Jerk chicken, collard greens, rice and peas and a beef patty on the side. "The rice and peas are kind of spicy," the girl behind the counter warned me. Aw, how sweet, but she obviously isn't familiar with my gullet of iron. It didn't take long to get my food which I then brought home, even though there are some small tables available for eat in. Overall, it was fine. The beef patty wasn't the best I've had and I'm willing to bet was probably frozen. (But even a bad beef patty to me, is still good.) The rice and peas had nice spice, but wasn't as hot as I'd been led to believe. Then again, my gullet=iron. The jerk chicken, though, was plenty good and spicy. I was pleased with it. The portion was generous too. I only wish I'd bought a two liter of neon soda to go with it. So for the Original Jamaican Restaurant, Andrew and for childhood days of past, a solid three stars to three and a half stars. A few months ago I found myself ACHING for some jamaican food, so after a lot of searching I narrowed my search down to The Original Jamaican Restaurant, and I'm glad I did. LOCATION: Off Edgewood, down the street from "Church the Bar" "Cafe Circa" and a few other restaurants. (I usually just take Boulevard to Edgewood-- for those coming from Midtown). There's street parking, and a small lot for about 3 cars on the side. FOOD: They have everything, curry chicken, oxtails, rice & peas, plantain, etc etc. But I stick to my beloved veggie patty and cocoa bread, and the occasional Jamaican soda. Though I stick to the simple items, I will say that they can be hit or miss at times, sometimes it's not as fresh or hot as I want, but usually good. ATMOSPHERE: Typical run-in-run-out Jamaican spot. You come and go straight to the counter to order, there's fridges with the drinks in it to the right, a little "lunch" type counter to the left along with a lot of random posters and stuff. I think there's also a small table and chair in there too, but it's not really meant for you to eat in here, it's meant for you to run in, order, sit/stand and wait, then run out. As someone else stated, the ambience of this shop inside and out is sorta like you're actually on the streets of Kingston, JA. (Which means depending on the time of day you may encounter a few random people on the outside) SUMMARY: If you want some real jamaican food, and you don't feel like going into a sit down restaurant to get it, definitely head to The Original Jamaican restaurant. I go here to get my fix every few weeks. OTHER: I've experienced a lot of what folks are saying below. Have I called in, asked a question and been given really really bad attitude? Yes. Yes I have. Did the place seem to have low-energy when I first visited? Yes. Yes it did. But by the third visit things nicened up, and now I get mostly smiles and kindness. It's rare that I get cravings for Jamaican food. Fortunately, I was at a nearby bar when I stumbled across this place on good ole Yelp. Definitely don't judge a book by its cover because this restaurant doesn't look appealing from the outside (and inside, really) but the food is delicious!
