It was late on a Wednesday night and I was trying to find a place nearby that was still open for dinner. I live in the neighborhood and have passed Chick In several times, always wondering if they were any good, or if they were like another cheap Crown Fried Chicken. I now apologize profusely for even entertaining that thought. I love cheap Crown Fried, what can I say, but Chick In and their peri peri chicken are in a whole other category entirely. I'd never even heard of peri peri chicken before, but reading the other Yelp reviews, I know that I had heard of Nando's before from random buzzfeed articles (lol)... The good reviews got me so I finally decided to give them a try. Told them it was my first time there and was immediately recommended the peri peri chicken. I got the hot quarter peri chicken with rice and jalapeno bites (I was craving spicy) and MMMMM! I don't know what constitutes a peri peri chicken but it was so tasty and delicious! And hot, yes. The hot was definitely hot lol. But, they also have gelato on the menu! I couldn't resist and it helped cool down the taste buds afterwards ^_^ I'll definitely be going back (maybe try the mild next time hahaa)... but not just for the food. The people working there were wonderful and so friendly. The owner was incredibly sweet and engaged me in a conversation (again, it was late, so not at all busy)... She did warn me that picking up would be better than ordering delivery during busy times, as they are still a small business with some staff constraints, so delivery can sometimes take longer than one would expect/prefer. My boyfriend and I came in here after saying for so long we'll try this place out. Anyways we came in with no idea what peri peri was, but oh man was it GOOODD ! Its a lemony spicy kind of sauce that just makes you want more ! Our favorite ( which was recommended by this sweet girl from the UK , I believe shes related to the owner ?) is the rice with chicken strips and salad ! Definitely a must try. Decided to try this place out, since it is Halal. Firstly, the place looks like a nice big roomy burger joint. Which, is extremely rare to find. I was impressed the second I walked in. I tried their chicken tandoori wrap and fries and it was amazing! The perfect amount of sauce, seasoning and vegetables and their french fries are so crispy and delicious ( so much better than any crown fried chicken). 5 stars for the chicken and wonderful owner! I can't really vouch for the other flavors of Peri Peri chicken but if you enjoy spicy food.. the hot and the extra hot are amazing! The extra hot is my personal favorite. Actually everyone I know of that's tried it can't seem to get enough of it either. However if you're not Desi (South Asian/Indian) it may be too fiery for you..The hot is just as delicious though! If you get it, make sure to get extra Peri Peri sauce. It's the orange sauce that comes on the side in a tiny container and compliments it perfectly. They're a little stingy with it but I've found if you're persistent, they'll give you a few extra. I've tried their zinger burger and it's really good too, a nice large piece of well marinated chicken in a large bun... personally not a fan of the bun, maybe if it were toasted or something, but the chicken makes up for it. Additionally the chicken tenders and rice are great as well, similar to the chicken and rice carts, but they use chicken breast so it tastes healthier. Make sure to ask for the spicy rice. I know that it hasn't been too long since they've opened up and they're still working out all of the kinks.. so I'll cut them some slack when it comes to cooking time, but be warned, if you're ordering chicken be prepared to wait. If they say 15-20 mins, I'd tack on another 10. Also I'd call in my order.. it's a nice enough place to eat in, lovely decor.. but call it in, unless you have the time to spare. Oh and be sure to say hi to the owner Rosina. As mentioned by previous reviewers, she's a sweet individual, brimming with charisma and a pleasure to talk to. I've drove past this place a couple times, noticing this fairly new establishment in my neighborhood within the last year or so. Took me a moment, but I finally gave "Chick In" a try, and I'm very happy I did . I went with the chicken strips over rice, and spicy fries. Their chicken is just incredible, no other way to put it. I honestly can't wait to come again to try the rest of their food, variations! Staff was very nice and accommodating, and the decor is cool as well. I can't give you too many suggestions since this was my first time, but I do know I'm ready to try it all, lol. This place has the makings for my new favorite spot already.. I highly recommend it! The food is great. I get the same side orders I would get at a pizzeria (poppers and mozzarella sticks), but I can also get Tandoori chicken or Peri Peri Chicken. The Peri Peri Chicken is incredible. The Zinger Burger is a brilliant concoction. I also love their fries. The owner of this store knows what he/she is doing. My whole family loves Chick In. My neighborhood doesn't really have a lot of halal options nearby, save for this place and Sahil Chinese. Frankly I think the sides are overpriced ($3ish for garlic bread and coleslaw?) but the deals themselves are OK. The zinger burger was alright but preferred BBQ Nite's one in Elmont. The onion rings and fries were delicious, and the orange sauce that came with it was perfection (I wish I had bottles and bottles of it). I also got the 8 piece chicken deal - the chicken pieces were big but lacked some flavor and were a bit dry. The paratha and tandoori peri peri chicken wraps, however, were small, and bland at best. Kind of disappointed. The most disappointing factor out of everything, however, was the delivery time. It took a little over an hour for the delivery to come through, and I'm doubting if it was even worth it. I could excuse delivery time if the food was actually exceptional but I can't even say that. Would I give this place another chance? I guess, if I'm in the mood for fried chicken and there's really nothing in the house. You call and the person barely speaks English and could not deliver my food when I called. He had to call his manager and call me back. They ended up delivering the food 2.5 hours later because they delivery girl got "stuck in traffic"... hello, this is NY. Anyways I tried calling again a few weeks later and it was the same delivery story so I just hung up and went with another delivery choice. Absolutely the WORST experience ever!!! Never delivered food that was ordered and still charged me for it! When I called the restaurant after waiting almost 1.5 hours I was told delivery driver tried to deliver (that is a lie - I was home the entire time and also have cameras on my premises. No one was ever here or tried to make a delivery) then the person that answered the phone told me to pick up the food because they are busy and no driver is available. If you know what peri peri chicken is, then you too would travel the distance to find some. Sadly, this place was pretty disappointing. It really felt like the chicken wasn't marinated overnight or long enough and they just dipped the meat into the marinade just mins prior to grilling. The meat wasn't well seasoned. Also another big problem for me was the fact that there was barely any meat on the chicken. I ordered half a chicken and two sides (spicy fries and rice). The chicken was on the smaller end and I barely had sufficient meat off the bones. The rice was also lacking seasoning. The best item I had was the spicy fries. The fries were definitely tasty. Happen to be driving by and noticed this place, great environment, nice clean set up. The customer service is exceptional by the owner as well as the employees. What I love about this place is that they cook everything fresh. It can take some time, but I don't mind when I see it being cooked in front of me. They have many sauces to choose from. I love their food. It's so delicious. So far I ordered food from here three times. I only got peri peri burger meal and chicken burger meal. Very delicious love it! The interior is also beautiful. The only thing I hate that is that they barely give any food like in their burgers they give only two small chicken strips and they give a tiny amount of French fries. I specifically asked for extra fries the second time when I ordered from here and they just gave a little. I was so frustrated since their fries are good. I also hate that they take more than one hour to deliver food when I only live like 5 minutes away- driving distance.
