Been going here for ice cream over the summer and just ate lunch here for the first time today. My wife and I both had burgers. They were nicely cooked and the cheese was nice and melty. The onion rings we split had a nice crunch to them. Topped it off with a delicious frappe. The service was very friendly. The owner introduced himself and shook our hands. I tried Frates on recommendation from a friend and this is one of the best warm weather destinations in southern New England. Great food, decent portions and very affordable. They offer the friendliest service that you will come across and the owner (Dennis) makes time to work the dining area to make sure all are happy. My husband and I have a loooonnnnggg history with Frates Drive-In, his much longer than mine. He has been going to this same location since the time he was a toddler, and it was one of the places we went frequently when we were dating. Back then, it was just a little roadside hot dog/burger stand run by a man named Glenn. Several years ago, a local "root beer" stand opened a branch there, and I think we went once or twice, but it was terrible. A couple from RI bought it a couple of years later, the husband having fond memories of working there in his youth, and decided to "bring Frates back." He has done that, and so much more! Returning to the down-home mom-and-pop hot dog/burger stand fare that Glenn had served - same hot dogs on the same buns, same burgers, same (bad) soda (haha!) - and then some! Dennis revamped the building, adding picnic tables and cute murals, cow statues and a doggie potty area out back; and the diners returned. Dennis and his wife sold the business at the end of last season, but the new owners seem to be following his lead, which makes perfect sense! Why "fix" something that ain't broken, right? My usual fare is the double cheeseburger and onion rings. The burger is typical burger stand, the onion rings are phenomenal. The soda is nothing to write home about...not sure what it is, but for as long as we have been going there, nobody's been able to get the soda tasting quite right LOL! BUT...the soda is easily made up for by the food, the atmosphere, and the New England charm of the place. They pipe 50s music through the speakers outside; last summer, I watched a man doing the Twist with his little daughter while they were waiting for their food to be ready. So cute! My husband gets hot dogs most of the time; always has, probably always will. Around late Spring, we change things up and he gets fish and chips and I get clams. Both are really good, not great (it's not a seafood restaurant, right?!). Perfect for a quick bite on a hot night when you just need to get out of the house and don't feel like cooking. The fries are fresh, the onion rings, as I said, are phenomenal! Everything we've had there has been great! Their selection of ice cream is amazing, from hand-scooped to soft serve, and sooooo many flavors and selections of sundaes, milk shakes, etc. With all the McD's and BK's on every corner, it's nice to see places like this making a comeback. It had a few rocky years, but it's really become a local favorite again. If you're from New England and have heard people reminisce about Frates from years ago, this is probably the closest thing you'll find to those old burger stands nowadays:) read more

The food is great and the atmosphere is family friendly, not to mention dog friendly. The place is very well kept up and very clean. The soft serve is flavorless, the hot dogs were white (not sure why, but I didn't chance it and tossed mine), the chicken fingers were low quality, and the owner argued with me about wanting extra sauce. They have good seafood plates which is hard to find at small drive-in places. They also have amazing ice cream! I love the variety. Got the lobster roll, lime Rickey, and ice cream... The roll and ice cream good and the lime Rickey was watered down and definitely over priced. Cute atmosphere but a lot of flies. Customer service was mediocre... I felt like I was interrupting them and rushed although no one was behind me. Can't say I'll be rushing to come back. Too bad since I live so close. Well I guess it is what it is. A little fast food joint in Taunton. I was silly to expect more. The positives. The place is clean from the customer stand point. No trash, peeling paint or anything like that. The server was pleasant and took our order quickly. Now the other side of the coin, the food. After all isn't that what it's all about? We tried the Charlie burger which looked good on the pix and the descriptors were mouthwatering. But alas so was not the case. Flat frozen burger patties YUK! All the ingredients were there and the burger was barely ok. In fact everything tastes as it should EXCEPT the burger which was basically tasteless. My wife's single hamburger was ripped and a good portion of it was hanging outside of the bun looking like whoever made could have cared less what paying customers think. I would have been embarrassed to serve one of my customers something that looked like that. And all that tasteless, crappy looking food with one drink and mortality wounded onion rings cost me only 25 bucks. I guess I should stfu and don't go back. Ever since Dennis sold the place the quality of the food has gone down. The lobster roll is barely stuffed and way overpriced. The burgers are so thin they're not even worth the price. And the French fries have definitely changed. Even the quality of the ice cream has gotten worse. I ordered strawberry ice cream and all I could taste was the high fructose corn syrup and food coloring. It's too bad the new owner has gotten so cheap. read more

Yummmmy! This is the definitive drive-in one stop spot for burgers and ice cream. I can see how people may sink into a deep depression during the winter while it is closed for the season. I know that I come pretty close. Their lobster rolls are voluptuous yet reasonably priced. Their burgers are simple yet amazing. The service is fast and if you can recall any flavor of ice cream imaginable, they have it. I love Frates. The only improvement I could suggest would be additional seating, and I know the property is of limited space so it is likely not plausible. Seriously. Go get a Wimpie Burger and a Graham Central Station and go back to yoga tomorrow. I know I am. read more

OK, this is an update to my previous review. Unfortunately Dennis sold the business and I cannot say that I'll be back after my second visit this summer. (Funny, when Dennis owned it we would go at least once a week). Anyhoo, we ordered frappes and we both got sick from them. I felt as if I had a bad stomach bug. I NEVER, EVER had a bad experience ordering anything from Frates until now. The fish & chip dinner was my favorite meal and I'm actually leery of trying it with this new owner. Update to previous review: Memorial Day weekend my husband wanted to try Frates again (he said "maybe they've improved"). I ordered the lobster roll and my husband ordered one of the burgers. I've had better lobster rolls from 99 Restaurant, the fries were limp and my husband wasn't impressed with his burger. Yes, it's been said before that Frates has changed since Dennis owned it but if this new owner wants to keep customers he will have to make some positive changes. I've noticed that there isn't alot of customers. By that I mean in years past you could barely find a parking place and the line was out the door. It's too bad because Frates was one of my favorite places to go to in the summer. Also, the "vibe" isn't what it once was. Ah, well. read more

Good service and decent food. Great place to bring the kids or family. They have a ton of options for food and desserts. Highly recommend the chocolate salted caramel pretzel hard ice cream!!! The portions are good, just wish the food had more flavor. We have been here several times and find the burgers are bland - not as exciting as their fun names. I do like this place. I'd have to say it is super convenient and adorably decorated on the outside. I've had their whole clam plate which was really good; fried golden brown, not greasy, fresh and flavorable! Their burgers are okay, didn't care for their burnt, greasy, flavorless fries though. My son and I always get their soft serve ice cream, they are definitely not lacking in variety! Truly something for everyone. My only complaint is that they are pricey, but I guess you're paying for the atmosphere as well. For me, I live 1 minute away so I'm paying for conveinence as well. Great little place in an average family neighborhood. In a good way, this is a throwback to the 70's. Burgers are fresh, shakes thick and hand-made. If you're driving by on the freeway, expect it to take about 15 mins to drive here, and don't get nervous when you pass by the shut-down factories in the middle of that drive. You are literally passing back though time to a better era, to a time when fast food and drive-ins didn't mean highly processed, chemically altered, utterly monotonous food. Today was my first visit to this place. I got the regular sized lobster roll (4oz. of lobster meat They also have a jumbo with 8 oz. of meat.) Since I was craving fried clams I opted for the 4 oz and a clam strip roll. They asked if I wanted melted butter or mayo on the side for the lobster. One thing I could never understand is that 99% of people that eat boiled lobster eat it with melted butter but 99% of lobster rolls out there are made with mayo???? Of course I got the melted butter! Finally a place that makes a lobster roll locally with BUTTER! I know the 99 restaurant does it with butter too but it's all claw meat there (my least favorite part of the lobster!) This has tail, knuckle and a large claw on top and all was very good. Note: The lobster meat is COLD not warm but still AWESOME! I will be back many many times! And I'll be getting the JUMBO! The strip clam roll was perfect also. NOTE: This is a drive-in. There are a few picnic tables outside so plan on take out or eating in the car. Love Frates! A great place for a bite to eat or for ice cream. It's always clean and the grounds are great. We frequently bring the dog and sit out at one of the picnic tables. The grounds are always clean and the landscaping is great. The food is standard drive-in food, but the quality is great! Awesome ice cream too! The staff is extremely friendly which you usually don't see at a "fast food" or drive in type place, but they really must do a lot to focus on friendly, kind service when training their employees. We go here all summer long. I bring all my out of town visitors here because it's such a relaxing fun atmosphere. The kids get to run around and it's a friendly inviting place to meet new neighbors. I tried Frates last summer for the first time and felt it was just okay, I told myself it might have been a bad day. Tonight I gave Frates another try. We ordered fried whole clams and fish and chips. We were both very disappointed. There was a lot of grit in every bite of the clams, even a small piece of shell in one bite I quit eating the clams after that. The haddock was okay but could have been fried a little longer. The place is very clean but they seem to have too much on the menu to excel at anything but the ice cream and drinks. I will stick to ice cream in the future. read more
