First time in Smithville and was happy with my experience here! Ambiance: Casual tavern dining with a great selection of craft beers and quality pub food. It was not too busy on a Wednesday but not overcrowded, and my party of 3 was seated promptly. Price Point: Great value for a tavern in a tourist area, maybe even a little less expensive than I thought which was enjoyable considering I came from Atlantic City! Pros: Service was great. It was a new employee with a trainer and they were timely and polite. A huge plus was when they brought extra waters to our table and were checking in on us throughout the meal. The food was great and tasteful. I had the Mahi tacos and my friends had the shrimp scampi and the F & E sandwich but replaced the bun with lettuce. Cons: Nothing really turned me off about this place except for a few minor comments. My tacos weren't hot, closer to room temp. I'm wondering if they made it a little too soon and left it out. It also wasn't nearly as flavorful as it looked, although still very tasty. Overall, I would give the tavern a solid 4.5 (rounding up to 5 for good service) and recommend trying it if your in the area or looking for somewhere in NJ to visit. The shops surrounding it are a wonderful tourist attraction and great way to spend the day! read more

WOWIE! Sooo delicious. Perfect balance of spice with creaminess. Appeared like pizza rolls but with an egg roll shell. Quality blue cheese dressing for dipping. Only comes with 4 tiny pieces, so order up if you're with a large group! Lunch entrees - Fish and chips (fries) were wonderfully light and crispy, 2 ample pieces of fresh fish, top notch creamy coleslaw, and a unique old bay aioli (paired nicely). Also ordered the ahi tuna sandwich on a delicious golden brioche. Blackened to perfection with the right amount of kick. HUGE piece of fresh fish. Very raw, so be sure to order to your liking since they didn't ask. Comes with potato chips (not homemade). Service was on par and the waiter was slightly quirky and talkative. Plentiful beer selection and fun cocktails. Looking forward to returning here next time I visit Historic Smithville. read more

What an adorable establishment. It's like you're sitting outside, only inside with the convenience of air conditioner. I had the blackened tuna burger which was incredible and their french fries are delicious. Our party also got the fish & chips which didn't look super fresh, and the meatloaf that looked gross but apparently tasted delicious. My other cousin got the thanksgiving dinner that looked awesome. A glass of wine made the whole meal spectacular and everything was very reasonably priced. read more

Service has gone down..bartender during our visit was not very friendly and did not check in with us once. My dining partners chicken bowl was just ok. $68 plus tip for not good food and not good service is disappointing. Ambiance is the best part of Fred's. A pleasant surprise. We popped by on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon while Mayfest was in full swing. We were a little worried that there would be a huge line inside, but we scored a seat right away. Service was really good - drinks were refilled constantly and we were checked on every few minutes. Our group of four decided to pick a bunch of different dishes and pick at them. First up, an order of the chicken wings. Mmm, I loved the sauce and the chicken were nice and meaty. The mahi tostadas arrived, three on a plate. There was a very generous amount of mahi, salsa with corn, cilantro, etc. Loved every bite. The bacon cheeseburger was spot on - really juicy, flavorful and nicely sized. By the time we got to our Caesar salad, we were almost too full to finish off completely, but duty called and we managed to put a good enough dent into it. Took my Dad out to eat on my day off. Was looking forward to good food and a pleasant experience having dined at F&E's numerous times. We could have gone anywhere of his choosing. I wanted it to be special, since we don't have lunch dates often. The service was terrible. The meal was average at best. Perhaps, it was a lack of "on the job training", or experience? My Dad said, "no ice" in his beverage. It arrived with ice and the server looked annoyed at him for correcting the incorrect order. I ordered soup. The server forgot it. The server didn't check-in on our table. A a matter of fact, she was no where to be found in the dining room. We had to ask both the busser and the hostess twice for refills on our beverages. There wasn't a lack of staffing. It was a weekday. It wasn't crazy busy. We weren't even offered dessert. It wasn't summer. Although GHOSTED by our server, it wasn't Oktoberfest. On our yearly trip to Atlantic City, we always go to Smithville and stop at Fred & Ethel's for lunch. I've been coming here since 2012 and it's always an enjoyable experience. I usually get either a salad or a sandwich. The staff is always friendly and attentive. Today I got the Santa Fe Salad - the chicken was spicy and it came with plenty of fixins and just the right amount of lettuce. On a getaway weekend to Renault Winery, my wife and I spent a Saturday afternoon in Smithville. We stopped in for lunch at Fred & Ethel's. It was Irish Festival weekend in town and his place was hopping. Luckily, we got seated before the big lunch crowd arrived. We both really enjoyed the Irish menu. This is located in Smithville Villiage. My husband and Ichose this restaurant because it had the most outdoor and shaded seating. I am glad we did. This is a pub. They serve sandwiches, picking foods and dinners but a smidge classier than your usual. My husband and I wanted a light lunch so we chose a sandwich and appetizer to share. The appetizer we chose was the buffalo wontons. They were crispy and filled with buffalo chicken dip. Paired with the homemade bleu cheese dipping sauce they were delicious. The sandwich we decided on was the short rib grilled cheese. The short rib was very tender and the gouda let the meat be the star. The sandwich was good but what really set it off was the horseradish cream sauce our amazing waitress Monica made for us. No lie that sauce made a great sandwich even better. To be fair, the restaurant was somewhat busy and when she did visit us, it was with a very big smile and warm greeting. We were in Smithville on an extremely hot day and had lunch at F&E's. Our wait staff was excellent! My brother in law had the meatloaf stack and loved it, and husband had a burger and enjoyed it. My sister had the tuna BLT and was disappointed and said it had grizzle! My tuna rice bowl had a nice presentation, the tuna was nicely crusted in sesame but the tuna tasted fishy.
