My wife and I went to Frederick's Bistro for Father's Day brunch. We had not been there for many years. The hostess opened the front door for us, but then asked us where our masks were (thanks to our local county dictator -- oops, I mean county judge --, everyone now has to wear a mask inside businesses). We dutifully put on masks, and then she checked our temps. After we passed inspection, we were able to choose our table, since it was not very crowded (we went at 1:30pm). Masks came off (although we were told that anytime we were walking through the restaurant - - for example. to use the restroom -- we would need to wear a mask). Another sign of the "new normal" was the tablescape, which is now typical of restaurants: absolutely nothing on the tablecloth (no sweeteners, no salt/pepper, etc.). We waited for at least 10 minutes before any server came to our table (seemed a bit long, since they were not busy). When she came, we were given real silverware wrapped in a cloth napkin (nice touch!), and our paper, one-use-only menus (again, the "new normal"). We had checked the special brunch menu online, and I was looking forward to having the paella. However, Devin, our waiter, informed us that they had posted the wrong menu online, and paella was not available at this location. There was a nice selection of entrees; I chose to have the Halibut Veronique (meaning grapes were part of the sauce). This was a very good choice! There was a Grand Marnier Veloute sauce, which was delicious. The fish was accompanied by mashed potatoes (which had been piped into a swirl, a nice touch), and a few veggies (exactly five). They also had very good crusty French rolls, with whipped butter (they had a good way to limit wasting bread, which is why a lot of restaurants no longer offer a bread service: a server came and placed one roll on your bread/butter plate; you just needed to ask for more rolls if you wanted them, which I did -- it was my dessert with my coffee). Again, this dish was very tasty and I would order it again. My wife had Eggs Benedict, which she said was good (though her favorite for this dish is served at Aldino's). FYI: the only items that come with your entree are potatoes and veggies; a salad -- there are several to choose from -- is extra. As I often do, I ordered a dessert to go: chocolate pecan cake. This was a very good choice! It was a chocolate mousse cake with a creme Anglaise & raspberry sauce and crunchy pecans. Very yummy!! Except at the beginning, the service by our waiter, Devin, was very good; he checked back several times to see if we needed anything. He was very pleasant and easy to chat with. A couple of minor demerits to our experience: (1) the background music was a bit too loud and did not match the atmosphere of the restaurant (lots of drum beats that went on and on, and not much melody, and again, too loud!); and (2) when Devin brought my (freshly brewed -- a nice touch!) decaf coffee at the end of my meal, he failed to bring me a spoon to stir the cream into the coffee (I used a fork that I had not used before). My need for a spoon should have been obvious to him, since he should have known that there was no spoon in the wrapped napkin we were given at first. The spoon issue wasn't that big a deal, but the music choice really did mar my experience somewhat, resulting in a lower rating. Overall, despite being a bit pricey for what you got (at least for the entrees), the food and the service were very good. I would go back again for another special meal (such as a birthday, etc.). read more

I've been to Frederick's Bistro twice now. The first time I was pleased with my meal and the service. Last time I went was earlier in the evening. Although it was not busy, the service was severely lacking and I thought the food was similar what you might get at PF Changs. There are so many restaurants in town to try that I doubt I will give this one a third chance. read more

Frederick's. Hmmmm. This popped up and I'm not sure I believe I haven't reviewed it yet. Been going here for many years. Always excellent. Friendly. Flexible. Great happy hour. There are a lot of great restaurants in SA so I get here less than I want to. French cuisine with fusion flare. I bring my kids who are well behaved, but not all nice places to dine are quite so nice about kids, even well behaved ones. Everyone who has visited me from out of town has dined here with me. I think there's something for everyone. It isn't cheap food, but is that what you want to eat tonight? read more

Enjoyed dinner here on Fri, 8/7/15. Had an Old Fashion. Very good. Had the lobster bisque and lamp chops. My lovely wife had the pork shank. Everything was delicious. Excellent service. Glad to see this restaurant is doing so well. Looking forward to returning. read more

June 22, 2016: Although this restaurant has been opened for a while, I had never had an opportunity to dine there. I will not be going back. The servers are attentive and it has a lovely interior. I was interested in their Happy Hour and asked for their bar menu. After reviewing, I thought it might be a good place for Happy Hour. After having lunch there, I will not be returning. It was a big disappointment. As I am a fan of French Onion soup, I ordered it. The broth was a bit lack-luster; the bread appeared to be a dark one. For some reason, it didn't work, in this application, and the melted cheese was very thick and hard to cut. Next, I ordered the carpaccio. It was worse! The beef, normally sliced paper thin, was very thick and I could not even cut it!! It looked like slices of raw roast beef.The menu said it was served with greens with a Vietnamese Salad & Tamarindo Dressing. The "salad" was not dressed at all; the greens were dry. There was no taste of a dressing. It is too bad because Happy Hour sounds somewhat appealing. read more

Food was 4 stars but the service I received was 0 stars. Absolutely horrible dining experience. I was entertaining a potential customer and we were not greated upon arrival and it took at least 15 minutes before I finallly had to flag down the waiter to ask for menus. After dinner we were never offered a dessert menu and I had to flag the waiter down again to ask for my check. When I voiced my displeasure with the service, his response was "OH, and that;s supposed to be my fault?" Never again will they get my business or my recommendation. read more

Four friends talked me into having dinner here after a horrible experience at the other Frederick's only because we had a Groupon. One person ordered the same dish again which was the duck confit and got 1/2 the portion. Is this the way this business works....cheating people? The Groupon is not free because you still have to pay for it and no where do they reveal that you get 1/2 the portion. I also asked to add the foie gras to my tenderloin which never happened. When I asked the waitress for it because my steak was so dry, she said that she assumed I didn't want it because it was a groupon. Huh? I never told her that i wanted it for free so why would she say that I wonder? Both terrible experiences at Frederick's and Frederick's Bistro, happened when the owner was at the restaurant. YUK!!!! Please, don't anyone ask me to ever go there again, even for free. It made me nauseated to say the least. read more

This is one of San Antonio's best resaurants. The French Escargot w/ Spanish Chorizo, Mushroom & Garlic Butter Sauce is a fantastic starter. We have had duck, crab cakes, scallops, flounder, etc. all great. Also, if you want to change how the food is prepared or swap out a sause, they will customize it to your satisfaction. I would give Fredricks 10 stars if I could, it was an incredible experience! We called on our way over and they said they could seat us in 20 mins, we were seated immediately upon arrival. Our server, Katie, was so awesome! Her enthusiasm about the entrees made it hard to choose. Both of our dishes were incredible, I had the mahi with mustard grain shrimp sauce and my boyfriend had the pork chop. The highlight of our dinner was the fried Brussels sprouts!! The wait staff is very accommodating, and Frederick is there to provide any added suggestions or work with you for special off the menu requests or changes to the menu selection you might want to make. I dinned in for lunch today at Frederick's Bistro and I had never been there previously. It was quite simply the best meal I have eaten in a very long time. I had the lunch special which was the Parmesean crusted Mahi Mahi. It was plated beautifully with fresh grilled veggies and perfectly mashed potatoes. The fish was topped with an Avacado relish that set it apart from expectations. Just a wonderful fusion of tastes on the plate. As for the atmosphere, it was very quiet and comfortable with excellant service that was very professional. It was a refreshing experience that I will not soon forget! So impressed I'm taking my wife there for Valentines Day. Looking forward to my next meal there. read more

This is my neighborhood "go to" restaurant anytime over any others. I love their Happy Hour Menu choices and that they extend HH until 8pm which is very rare and if you're one to be working late, this is worth a try! I rarely write negative reviews but my experience tonight was so upsetting that I felt I had no choice. I have a few food allergies but restaurants, whether casual or fancy, are always able to accommodate me. Our waitress who only checked on our large table a few times throughout the night didn't want to bother the chef with all of my questions and instead told me they would not be able to accommodate my request for any non-marinated meat other than fish. I even told her that I didn't mind a bland meal as long as it had some meat other than fish for protein. Shortly afterwards I overheard this waitress explaining a menu item that fit my food allergy needs (non-marinated chicken) perfectly and pulled her aside to let her know that I would be able to order the dish she was referring to. When my chicken was brought out, I took one bite and realized that it was undercooked. I have never in my life had a restaurant bring me undercooked chicken, and I'm pregnant so that could have been very dangerous if I hadn't noticed. We couldn't send my food back because no one came to check on our table for at least 25 minutes after our food was brought out. However, once my husband finally got a hold of the manager and tried to politely explain the situation, he was brushed off and told that the chicken was fine. There were no apologies from the waitress or manager. I've never had an experience at a restaurant like this before. It truly was a disappointing evening because we were gathered together to celebrate a family member's 95th birthday and it should have been a special and memorable evening. HEY! Are you into being humiliated because you're not a size 2? Then this is the place for you! While dining at "The Bistro" the other night, I asked the owner, Frederick, what he would recommend on his "From the Land" part of his menu. He praised the Tenderloin dish, but then immediately turned to our dinner partner, also his vague acquaintance, and said, "But Lisa, this is NOT for you, I KNOW that you want to keep YOUR lovely figure and this is very fattening." She responded that she was getting the fish. I was completely embarrassed and hurt. I understand that he was trying to flatter her, but why would you do that at someone else's expense? I am not a fat woman, however, I am 5'10 and weigh 170 pds. I would be considered Amazonian. So, after spending $200 to be humiliated and receiving sub-par food and service, I would NEVER recommend this wannabe 'fine-dining" establishment. read more
