My family was eager to try this restaurant because of the great reviews. We have lived in Hartselle for years and finally gave it a try. My husband got a steak, my mother in law had a salad, and I got a burger. Easy right? Within minutes of finishing my burger I became sick! I had to run to the restroom. I was the only one who got sick, had to be the burger. Few months later my brother in law went to eat here and also got the burger and also got sick. I left feeling miserable. Had a wonderful time here in this blast from the past train depot turned restaurant. This place is really neat, and it really takes you back. The food was good. Craft beers, wine only. It's loud. The ceiling is very high and it was pretty busy when we went. The menu was substantial, with a nice write up about the train depot and what it was like back in the 1800's. This is a great place to stop in for a nice meal. We travel from Indianapolis to the Gulf each year and have wanted to stop, because of our son's love of trains. We were thrilled when we arrived and it was interesting to him AND had great food. My husband had the hamburger steak, I had the Island Chicken and the kiddos split a chicken fingers order. The chicken was perfectly cooked, my husband said the steak was very good (not amazing, though). And our kids actually ate their food, which is a huge win. Our waitress anticipated our needs with two small children and brought extra plates for us to cut up chicken since it was served in a basket. For dessert, we had the strawberry cake, brownie a la mode, and our son had the build a train cookie. I can't stress how DELICIOUS dessert was. All three were grand slams. The brownie was big enough for our whole family, and the strawberry cake and icing were perfectly homemade. Our son loves icing and decorating his own cookie too! Food is in large portions which compliments the price. Quality of food is good. I am not a huge fan of the parking situation but the restaurant itself is so neat. Loved the ambiance. I loved the staff; very friendly and pleasantly cheerful. My wife loved the catfish. I ordered the vegetable meal. I loved the turnip greens (with a very pleasant subtle smoky flavor). The fried mushrooms were a fabulous item, and were enough for a group of four to feast on before the meal. The coffee was my kind of coffee. And the cost was unusually reasonable. Never felt like we were under a time limit. We were very comfortable and relaxed and just loved being there.Very much enjoyed the experience of eating there. We stopped in for Dinner after looking at some real estate. The wait was a little longer than I expected. we were seated in a large open dining area with tables and booths and we got a table near the fireplace. We were greeted by our server,Fabian. I ordered the Bourbon Ribeye and the missus had the Alfredo. My steak was in the top 3 of great steaks I've had in Huntsville. It was perfectly seasoned and cooked medium rare. It's a little pricy steaks run from $24 to about $38. Steaks are ribeye, prime rib, filet mignon. They have chicken and fish dinners this. Experience blew away our recent dinner at we had at J Alexanders, where we spent well over $100 dollars for a mediocre experience. Freight house was less than $70 with a 21% tip! It was a fantastic dinner in a historical building and two trains came by during our visit. I'll go back. My only negative comment is the mend room only one toilet,no urinals at all. The soap dispenser was empty that was disappointing after such a great meal. read more

Driving from Destin back to Nashville with two small children, we needed a break! Randomly found this restaurant on yelp and the reviews were good. This place was amazing! I got the coconut shrimp and my husband got a steak, both were some of the best we've ever had. The shrimp was better than all of the restaurants we went to at the beach. Very disappointed. We were just traveling through and didn't want to go through a drive thru. This appeared to be a good option. It's only a couple of miles off I-65. The building and atmosphere were both great. The hostess was very nice and we got a table right away when we walked in at 12:05 pm. Our waitress was friendly and took our drink and food order at the same time. This is where things went bad. It was 1 pm before our food was brought to our table. 55 minutes after we were seated. And when we got it the food was luke warm. If we are ever passing through in this area again The Freight House will not be on the list of places to eat. read more

I was very disappointed in my visit to The Freight House today. The food was mediocre and the service was AWFUL. We had my cousin's bridal shower here a few years ago and everything was wonderful so I had super high hopes about eating here. I was sorely disappointed. My family and I are pretty easy going and not hard to please but when we only see you 3 times in our visit and have to come hunt someone down to refill our drinks that's a little ridiculous. It was also almost 80 degrees outside it was terribly hot inside the restaurant and uncomfortable. They even had a fire burning (which they did cut off) but it felt awful in there. We all shared an appetizer of fried pickles, onion strings & fried mushrooms which all paired well with the horseradish sauce. We ordered the special - chicken fried steak & gravy, fried potatoes & onions & peppers. The chicken fried steak was crisp on the outside & so tender on the inside with the gravy & potatoes - so good! I really hated giving this visit a 3 star rating, but a 4 just wouldn't be honest. We arrived for a late lunch as a group of 6. We were seated immediately but service through - out the meal was a little on the slow side. The restaurant was not busy just seemed to be a lack of attention. The menu has a large selection of food and what we received in my opinion was mauve a better quality than some other places. I ordered fried pickles as appetizer and the BBQ Pork Panini as the main meal. They provided plenty of delicious pork on the Panini but it was a little most and made the sour dough bread a little soggy. The main reason for lower rating was the fried pickles. I like fried pickle and almost always order them if available. They forgot to shake the grease off this before placing in basket. These pickles rate the lowest of any I have ever eaten. The food here is the best in Hartselle, the only problem is the service. It takes forever to get waited on and once you have your food well don't expect to see them again till they bring you the check. I drink a lot and you are lucky to get one refill. Very disappointing. read more
