One of the best meals my family and I have had since moving to Alabama. My wife had the prime rib (loved it), my son had the country fried steak and couldn't finish it (lotsa food) and I horked down the Reuben sandwich (Oh my word!) LOVED IT‼ We shared a piece of homemade strawberry cake for dessert (delicious)‼ The service was as one would hope (friendly and attentive). Everything was fresh, made to order and delicious. We were just passing through on our way up to Nashville and found this place on Yelp & decided to give it a try. So glad we did! Everything was delicious and the building was beautifully restored. The room they have for private events looks perfect for any occasion, & I even mentioned to my husband that I wish we could just pick it up and move it back home! We enjoyed the chicken panini & BBQ panini. The mashed potatoes were not to my liking, only because I don't like black pepper and they were heavily peppered, but the homemade potato chips and whatever dipping sauce they serve with them were delicious. The kids shared the BBQ baked potato and loved it too. For dessert we had the chess pie (best I've ever had) and chocolate peanut butter cake, which my husband enjoyed. (They accidentally brought out strawberry cake at first, then the chocolate that we ordered, but gave us the strawberry slice in a to-go box anyway which was very nice.) My kids loved decorating a train cookie with icing and sprinkles, and getting to watch trains pass by right behind the restaurant as we came and left! Stopped on our way south from I65. I had the chicken salad plate. Chicken salad was very good as well as frozen cranberry cup. The pasta salad was bland for my taste. My husband had the BBQ panini. He said it was bland - needed more sauce. The homemade chips were good. The kids split a grilled cheese and fries and ate it all with no complaints. The atmosphere is unique. Service was very good. Ordered a 12oz ribeye which had absolutely NO seasoning. Appears that they didn't have any pre-cut steaks and when they made mine, they forgot to add any seasonings (at least that's what we were told). They did take off the price of the appetizer for the awful tasting steak.....if you're going to charge $20 for a 12oz steak, the expectation is that it would be a perfect tasting steak. Don't think we will be coming back here anytime soon, if ever. read more

We went there for a party. My steak was overlooked (took forever) and not a granule of seasoning. My wife ordered a chicken salad. You know, a nice salad with some grilled or fried pieces of chicken. WRONG. She got a few pieces of lettuce with a pile of potted crap on it. She could have got better from a can of potted meat at Dollar Tree. Ridiculous and overpriced. Worst steak I ever had, an embarrassing excuse for a chicken salad and the service wasn't great either. Restaurant? More like a garbage trough. Don't go there. This is a cool building. As we walked in people were leaving with take out boxes of cake. We has the blue cheese burger and the mushroom and Swiss. Both burgers rates up in the top of burgers we have ever had! Our waitress was friendly. I do not know if we will ever be in this part of the country again but if so we will go again. There is something about a small town food establishment and the Freight House is one of the good ones out there. It is a great place to eat, the atmosphere was great and the customer service was spectacular. It's an establishment that is willing to go above and beyond to ensure the customer is well taken care of. My wife and I went this past weekend for lunch on Saturday, the day before Valentine's Day. We asked to be seated by the fire place and they accommodated us. Took our drink order and was out shortly after. They took our appetizer order and main course and that's where it seemed like they forgot about us. I don't recall the total time it was from placing the order until we actually got served, buts that is where the Freight House distinguished themselves. Instead of coming out and telling me that our order would come out shortly when they know that it wouldn't, our waitress came out and told us the truth; some how our order was misplaced and it was never started and apologized. We weren't even mad, just taken back that she told us the truth. The manager came out shortly after and apologized to us as well and told us to make room for desert. As we finished our meal the waitress asked what we wanted for desert, it was on the house for the meal debacle and we told her that it was ok we didn't have room for it by thank you. So when she came back with the check, we were surprised to see that our bill was reduced. I won't say how much because there are low life's out there that will use, "well someone on Yelp said that you gave them this much and I should too". Let's just say it was more than we deserved or expected. So I left the waitress a 40% tip, it was a tip not only for the service, but the offer for free desert, the total price of the meal and for plain ole honesty. To me the honesty was the deal sealer. You bet I will recommend to my family and friends about the freight house and we will certainly be back to eat there again when we're in town. Thank you very much. read more
