Pros: - Tasty burgers and fries - An authentic drive-in - Good (but not great) variety of menu choices Cons: - Severely understaffed - High prices - Not enough seating I stopped at Fresh Freeze on a Sunday afternoon. I waited 5 minutes to place my order for 2 patty melts, 2 small fries, and 2 small drinks. All of the available indoor seating was occupied so I moved outside after ordering to wait for my food. And I waited. And waited. And waited. After 30 minutes I had to inquire as to where my food was. The same lady that took my order had to go back and make my burgers. 45 minutes after arriving I was able to find a seat outside and eat. Think about that, 30 plus minutes to make two small burgers, bag two small fries, and fill two cups with Diet Coke. I don't blame the employees, all 4 of them, because there was a constant line at the counter not to mention the phone-in orders that were also constant. I saw one cook, two people taking/assembling/completing orders, and one person making ice cream related items. The owner(s) need to get a clue as to proper staffing levels. I'm sure they have the money considering Fresh Freeze's prices. The only redeeming value here was how yummy the patty melts on rye were and the generous amount of fries. I would like to rate higher but my experience doesn't allow it. read more

Very good milk shakes. Although the food is pretty average for a drive-in restaurant the "Humboldt burger" is my favorite.

Any local will be very familiar with this place. I always enjoy the food, the ice cream, and of course the atmosphere of a 50's dinner. But please don't come if you're in a hurry because they can be slower than molasses. The seating is limited and prices are kind of high. read more

It's probably closer to 4 stars - but I have to go for 5 to balance out some of the crazy negative reviews. The cherry-lime drinks are great. I appreciate that they have a decent veggie burger and some chicken sandwich options.The milkshakes are just about perfect. Sundaes, too. They're generous and much tastier than fast food ice cream treats. The food is pretty darn good. Somethings are a bit pricey - but if you want a deal - order a chocolate dipped cone. Yum! They do get busy - particularly when the sun comes out - and could use more staff at times. But, it's an AUTHENTIC place. That's for sure. I use to come here in high school - when it was much more of a hangout - and it hasn't really changed much. I'm really glad to see them still serving up food. So...all of you whiners out there....order yourself a chocolate milkshake and chill!! read more

I really like this place and am always looking for a good chili fries. I have found them only one problem is the way they pack them up for a to go order. It drives me crazy. They put them in a boat and wrap foil around it. No biggie but then they put in the bag and flip it up on its side so all the chili and fries get all mushed up on the foil and its just a mess. Where's the beef? Seriously, where is the beef?? Ordered a bacon cheeseburger and the small slice of tomato was bigger than the 1/4 inch thick burger patty. The size of the sandwich equals a McDonalds kids menu burger and it was pricey! I will not return. read more

People Go to fresh Freeze always thinking its a fast food place. it isn't. they make your food when you order it. During Lunch time and Dinner time they are packed, but never has anyone ever waited 45 minutes for there food. if you want fast food go to Mcdonalds. I always feel like I'm in the 60s or 80s when I come here. It is an old fashioned looking fast food joint. You can tell when you come in because the interior is pretty ancient. They have old toy cars displayed and tables set. Come here and enjoy an old fashioned hotdog or chilli cheese fries. Don't forget to get an ice cream cone. read more

My sister and nephew took me here during my recent visit. All I can say is YUM!!! Living just north of San Francisco, we are inundated with chains like Burger King, Wendy's, and Carl's Jr. To get a halfway decent burger, you have to go to a sit-down restaurant and pay the requisite higher price. (In fact, there's a place in San Francisco, Joe's Cable Car, that charges $11 for a 1/4 pound plain burger because he "grinds the meat fresh daily." Everything that you add onto the burger (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, etc.) is an extra charge.) As a baby boomer, I like this throw-back to a good fried burger on a fluffy bun. Asked for extra crispy fries and they were perfect. The jumbo burger was good size with LOTS of pickles, lettuce, tomato, mayo. Sister and nephew got the sweet potato fries, an unusual menu item outside of a sit-down restaurant. The chocolate shake was great. I hear that there are 1-2 other good burger places in Eureka, but I would definitely eat here again on my next visit. read more

Best corn dogs in town, real deal hand dipped fairground kind of dogs here! Set yourself up with a side of fried zucchini and wash it down with chocolate peanut butter shake (check the special board, fresh-fruity shakes in season). Burgers are small but super tasty. Best ice cream in Humboldt County. Rich, real cream soft serve ice cream. Not your average hard dipped from a carton ice cream. Nothing better than hearing tunes from the 50's and 60's as you stand in line to get this awesome treat. Milkshakes you need to eat with a spoon. So many flavors to makes your shake the way you want. Best chili cheese fries you can get around here! Their fish and chips are to die for, and the ice cream is not bad either. The burgers could be a little better, kinda soggy and limp looking. Also, it says bat they close at ten but while we were eating at 9:30 the woman working started putting chairs up and told us they were closing soon, making us rush eating. Won't be back. Ordered bacon cheeseburgers ~ The bacon wasn't much thinner than the burger which was barely warm. They were the size of sliders we've had other places. All I can say is wow! In the past I have been wearing of the food at this location but in my most recent visit I have taken it all back! To start off I was quite happy to see that upon entering the main dining area the ambiance and cleanliness is on par with any top of the line restaurant. The staff was patient and friendly while taking and delivering our order. I had a short hot dog with cheese and was very happy with the portion size that is available for such a fair price. Fresh Freeze has good soft serve ice cream and milk shakes. Stay away from the food. When I was young, the milkshake list was huge. but over the years they have cut back on the variety tremendously. If you want good ice cream, your better off going downtown. If you want sugar in a cup, then it's perfect. If you want food that will give you a heart attack, and your prepared to wait 25+ minutes for greasy fries and cold food, then this place won't disappoint. Terrible,.... I called in my order and was told 40 mins. I thought that was a long time but, thats why I called it in. I arrived about 45mins later, and they had'nt even started cooking my burger. The " tweeker ", like person behind the counter was'nt even distrought at the fact I called in an order and had to wait an additional 30min for my food. In the mid 90's, Fresh Freeze was a childhood favorite. I used to ride my bike for miles to have little burgers and patty melts. Last multiple years the place has gone down the tube. There was a time where I looked past the bad service and questionable food, but they crossed a line. I ordered a couple little burgers and the patties were burned. I had never seen a burned hamburger patty before this. It was crunchy!!!! Plus there was random trash and french fries strewn across the floor. All the tables had ketchup smears and were salted like pretzels. Have never and will never be back again. Goodbye childhood. read more

I ordered a vanilla milkshake and within a half hour, my stomach was screaming. Then I had the runs all nite and 100 temperature. It ran it's course, a day later i am fine, and I was not sick prior to that. They need better hygiene on the equipment! read more

After 30 minutes of waiting for our food and watching several people who ordered after us receive theirs, we checked on our order. We were informed our ticket had been misplaced and therefore our food hadn't been made. We were offered "if we still wanted our food it could be ready in another 10 minutes." No offer for discount or anything - just asking if we still wanted the food?! At least the employee did apologize. By now my two young children were very hungry, so yes, we still wanted our food! We asked if we could please have at least an order of fries now to let the kids get started while we waited for the food. They said yes, but didn't bring anything until the whole order was made. Our order wasn't accurate (it was close) but by then we were too hungry and frustrated to go back to the counter. Before leaving we tried to use the restroom but it was locked. After waiting and knocking on the door for over 10 minutes, an employee said "well maybe someone locked the door and left." I asked if they could please unlock the door and she stated they didn't have a key to their own restroom. I found that hard to believe but didn't want to assume she just didn't want to be bothered to help me. However a few minutes later as I was walking out of the restaurant, another employee went and unlocked the door. I have no interest in returning. read more

I'd give this 4.5 stars if I could. My only complaint was lack of restroom (for a restaurant that's so weird) and their fries were incredibly bland and inedible. Honestly though everything else was great. Atmosphere was nice, food was served relatively quick, and just as expected from a place like this. They really need to fix their bathroom situation though.
