When I used to have to run errands in Chinatown a couple times a week, this was my go-to place for cheap eats, since it was perfect for a student budget and watching the ladies make the dumplings is a great way to spend a half an hour. Recently, I bought a fancy-schmancy rice cooker and on the same day it arrived, I was in Chinatown, so I thought I might as well buy some dumplings to take it for its first steaming spin. Oh sweet happiness! Not only does my rice cooker steam them in a half an hour, but they are SO DARN GOOD! Delicious filling and perfect skins. God I love this place. I love the fact that it is the epitome of a hole in the wall. I love how the Sriracha sauce is watered down by half, how the entire place is smaller than some people's kitchens. I love how the owner, a coarse lady who cooks the dumplings and who has been behind the counter every single one of the hundreds of times I've been here, no matter the hour, barks to take your order in Shanghainese and Mandarin-- I understand one of those, but she clearly doesn't mind that her white customers likely understand neither, because she'll speak to them in a sharp amalgam of English, Shanghainese and Mandarin anyway. I love how she mutters to her comparatively-quiet coworkers, sometimes comments about the customers, who are busy putting together fresh dumplings beside her. The dumplings are great, fresh and handmade, perfectly crisp and the inside juicy and perfectly seasoned, and all way better than Tasty Dumpling's around the corner (and cheaper!). Comparable steamed pork buns can be found in Flushing, but they're good here nonetheless. Surprisingly, the hot and sour soup was delicious, and I've found myself indulging my craving for it on hot summer days (note: in lieu of air conditioning, Fried Dumpling has tons of food sizzling/steaming over a giant fire just a few feet away...). A huge deliciousness factor is in the fact that anything you are served is always just cooked and piping hot, actually. Who wants lukewarm food? Catch this place between 2pm and 5pm on a weekday and it'll be filled with high school kids-- but part of the draw is that seating is so spare and the food is so fast that the place fills up, and empties out, quickly. First time I went here was about 10 years ago. The dumplings are alright for the price. I've been there plenty of times within the 10 years only because it is a convenient option for me. I regret giving the owner my money. The owner is a horrible person. She rips off people whom she thinks she can take advantage of. This usually includes kids and white people. The dollar dumplings are now $1.50 for 5 ($3 for 10). The place is more like a stall run by an old woman, very small, with a counter really just for you to put sauce on your dumplings. Take your order and head to the right to the nearby park to enjoy them. The fried pork dumplings themselves are not bad, a little greasy, and good with some hot sauce or a little vinegar to cut through the oil. Definitely not the healthiest thing, but makes for a nice snack or a filling meal if you order more. read more

Craziness! This place is like a replica of Fried Dumpling on Allen St (http://www.yelp.com/biz/VctfAX2tuL3TB-bWAhUEIQ): same name(!), same sign outside(!), and I suspect same owners(?). The menu is also essentially the same (minus some items, unfortunately, like the bean congee, beef noodle soup and sesame pancakes... boo!). The 5 potstickers for $1 (or in my case 10 for $2!) were pretty good, but a little more oily and gooey than at Fried Dumpling, which remains my favorite spot. I also wish their soy sauce wasn't so diluted: it felt as if I was pouring water on my dumplings, so I finally ended eating them without any sauce. I also tried the hot and sour soup ($1, tasty), which was pretty spicy and gave me a good sweat. It's good to know this place exists, and it's location is slightly more convenient than Fried Dumpling, which is a little out of the way. This place is a little hole in the wall that you can smell all the way down the block. You know those cartoons when a really hungry guy is grabbed by his nose by a trail of smoke shaped like an arm and he drifts in a trance towards the plate of food? Happens every time I walk past that block. Even if I'm stuffed to the gills, my stomach starts to rumble just a tiny bit. One time, I walked past for lunch... I ordered $6 worth of dumplings (30 dumplings!) for myself. I doused it with the vinegar sauce, the hot sauce, and went to town. 15 min later... and admittedly a couple of satisfied burps... all 30 were gone. Crushed them! Also, for those people who want to enjoy them at any time... you can buy frozen bags to take home for $5 a bag. Eight veggie dumplings and a take-out bowl of hot & sour soup for $3. The soup wasn't great, but a little srichacha did the trick. And the dumplings? I'm no afficianado, but, I really liked them. Anyway, for the price, they must be the best ever. There is room for four or five people to sit at a counter, and the service consists of a Chinese lady taking your money and...that's it. In other words, service was so laughably non-existent that it actually looped around from being bad and got to good again. I wandered into the Fried Dumpling place around 6pm on a beautiful late summer Saturday and wanted a quick bite of some tasty fried pork dumpling and what I got from the old lady behind the counters was a load of nasty temperment, rude verbal responses, and worst of all - UNSANITARY PRACTICES!!! A few points with the lady behind the counter, Treats customers rudely as obligatory ATMs whom should fork over their money asap (watch how fast she collects your cash). Took the cash with her hands(No Gloves!) powdered with flour from making raw dumplings and proceeded to put dumplings into the takeout container and hands it to you. Talks loudly to her coworkers without regard to anyone else in this small cramped establishment. Food points, Dumpling were pitifully small. There's more dough than fillings. Hot and soy vingear sauces were so watered down that it basically flows like water out of their respective bottles. Never mind that you only get hints of flavor from the sauces. OMG, this is, hands-down, everything I remember from my childhood, living in China and eating all of meat buns off the street vendors. The taste is the same! (for good/bad). The meat buns, in which I'll focus my entire review on, are small, succulent little suckers that hold a pocket full of hand made fillings from the two chefs in the kitchen. The ladies are primarily Mandarin speaking (with a heavy Beijing accent), so communication may be difficult, but the simple sign for $1 for 6 dumplings or 4 meat buns is all that needs to be said. I will admit, there is only one flavor of the dumplings/meat buns, but to be honest, why change something that's perfect? For cheap fixings ($1 for 5), this place is not bad. I do agree with majority of the reviews that these dumplings DO stick together as 1 big clump. For the price you pay, I cannot complain. But, does it beat Rickshaw Dumplings? You betcha, that dumpling truck still puts dumplings to shame. For $1 these dumplings only come pan-fried, which is OK (but I do prefer boiled). The old lady that works here is really rude. The first couple of times I've been here they were nice even though it was busy. Today it was quiet but the lady was just plain rude. I asked for 10 dumplings in chinese. She said $10? I didn't hear her say dollars just 10 so I said yes. When I saw her grab more than 10 dumplings I told her I only wanted 10 and told her to stop and she huffed and puffed. Then I gave her $2 in quarters and she says rudely in english, 'No! Only dollars no pennies!' Ummm, how are quarters pennies. Oh you mean you want notes and not coins. WTF. Umm you can say cash only, but you can't choose between notes and coins woman! I also ordered the tea and milk drink which was 50 cents and she tells me it's 75 cents. I told her it says 50 cents on the board and she says rudely in chinese you either want it or you don't. Ok, I don't want it then! It might only be 25 cents but it is the principle. Don't try to rip people off. I know I shouldn't be complaining because it's cheap but Prosperity Dumplings is sooooo much better and it's also in Chinatown. Their dumplings are bigger, they're not tight on the filling and the dough is delicious, unlike this place which is stingy on the meat. I generally just buy more than I want and put them in fridge, eating 10+ at a clip after i microwave them back to life. This place is hilarious. There is simply nothing like it where I'm from and I can't see it happening any time soon. You can get 5 dumpings... for 1 dollar. There are few things on the menu, and a few people in the kitchen cooking things up like crazy. They barely speak English but enough is known that you can get your order in with little to no confusion. Since we ordered 30 veggie dumplings (sort of by accident), we had a ten minute wait. But it was worth it because everything was made fresh! And ten minutes later we came back to three steaming boxes of veggie dumpings. This place is close to court and cheap, and it satisfies my frequent pork cravings. They don't like to give change, at least not coins, so they tend to throw in an extra dumpling as opposed to give you a quarter back for your 75 cent coke and $2 of dumplings. I do sort of wish that the vinegar-y sauce they have was a little more flavorful, since sometimes the dumplings could use a bit of tang. Beware that $2-3 dollars worth of dumplings will make you feel full at lunch time, and then by 3:30 you may find yourself spending $3 on a chocolate bar at the salad bar next to your office. I used to think it was great. It had a certain cool factor to it. Where else could you balance out the $6 you spend on order-in dumplings. But the truth is, it's really nothing special...it's kinda gross actually. The last two times I went there were pieces of bone in at least one dumpling. I thought this place was going to be good, since it is tucked away in such an out of the way corner of Chinatown and mid-block to boot. I was hoping that this would be a great alternative to Prosperity Dumpling just in case that spot gets too overrun, and I needed a solid Plan B. Unfortunately, this is going to have to be my Plan S, the S standing for small. I was happy about the prices and the facilities were fine (actually a step above from Prosperity) but when I popped a dumpling in my mouth, I knew within a nanosecond that the filling was microscopically small. I opened up a dumpling and found that the filling was about the size of my pinkie toe. Look, I know times are hard and rents are going up, but I would much rather they raise the price than short change you on the filling. I only had the pork dumplings and not the steam buns, but my frustration with my portion left such a bad taste in my mouth that I declined to order any more. read more

This is a wonderful little place. I first discovered it during my teen years when I used to go to Chinatown Fair and play video games. After a long bout of Puzzle Fighter or DDR, you mosey on down to the dumpling ladies for a cheap and satisfying meal, then go next door to the Thai grocery for some mango juice to wash it all down. It's on a shady side street that leads to the park and if you aren't paying attention you could walk right by. I usually order $3 worth and go and eat them in the park. If you are broke and want a really tasty and fulfilling lunch come here. For five dumplings for $1, the only way you can go wrong is to not eat here. read more
