The chicken leg I got today was very tasty and was cut into 3 parts with rice and cooked cabbage. The chicken was tender and juicy. It was barbecued and somewhat sweet. It came with soy sauce and hot chili sauce with chili flakes. I kept using the hot sauce because it was so addicting. It made the chicken so good! The place itself is really small with high bar seats that can seat 2 people on one side of the restaurant. There's also a bench by the entrance for people to sit and wait for their orders. Other than that it is not really convenient for large groups. It's best if you grab your to go. There's a self kiosk to place your order. There's also a convenience fee if you use your credit card.

Now that the promotion is over, the price has gone up to ~$13, but I think it's still worth it: it comes with a generous portion of tasty, freshly cooked duck, tender with crispy skin, the noodles are the right texture, and the broth is savory and comforting. There's also some bok choy mixed in, and you can ask for chili oil on top. I've also had their $5 char siu meal, which comes with several slices of char siu pork, white rice, and some cabbage - the char siu was on the drier side and the cabbage wasn't super flavorful, but for $5, it was a perfectly good dinner in the city at an unbeatable price. The set up is classic Hong Kong restaurant/cafe with the kitchen & roast meats area up front, friendly uncles & an auntie working. Most staff are at least dual language Cantonese & English, maybe some Mandarin. It's noodles for lunch & rice (course meals) for dinner, but I wasn't feeling well. I needed something comforting. The OG Standard Cantonese order is $8 Wonton Noodle Soup - I chose the "Dumpling version" over wonton (ie. Wontons & vermicelli egg noodles in a chicken-based broth). Think chicken soup, matzo soup - not your overly salted, saucy American-style flavors. Cantonese food values the freshest & simple flavors of the real ingredients. Was happily surprised that their version was SUPER fresh! The dumplings were a nice small - medium size, plump & juicy. Cross section reveals perfectly portioned shrimp, pork, shitake mushroom, & scallion (nice twist!). I mean, the chef is wrapping them right in front of you up front. The vermicelli noodles were a bit softer than al dente & the best test was bringing at home and dividing the noodles into two bowls. They sectioned off easily & didn't become a weird mass on the 40 minute commute home. The other surprising part of the soup was the broth! I wouldn't say Cantonese wonton soup broths are deep or memorable but this broth surprised me. It had more flavor and like a light medium depth than others I've had. Right before I went to pay for my order, a grandpa quickly came in and picked up a pint of "the chicken broth." The chef seemed to know him and joked about his "special order "and a different type of name for it. TRUST the grandpas! You can add some chili oil, dash of white pepper, or worst case scenario a dash of soy sauce to the soup, but encourage you not to ruin the purity of the ingredients! Maybe I'll bring my family here the next time they're in town, I have high hopes for the rest of their Cantonese dishes. Note: The staff was very homey & kind. Auntie upfront noticed that I needed to go to the bathroom & relayed it to the staff. It's a small restaurant & the staff replied to her with which customer was using the bathroom, & one other that was waiting next, and then me. The restaurant was lively, loud (informally measured in the high 70's to low 80's in decibels), and crowded full with locals. We were lucky to be seated quickly, as subsequent visitors had to wait. We only ordered four dishes; we stopped because the food leaned towards below average. The beef short ribs were thick and chewy -- under-marinated and overcooked. The siu mai was mushy and had chunks of fat. The beef rice noodle roll was OK but the rice noodle was somewhat coarser than the competition. The prices here are decent (hence the crowd); $4.50 for Small, Medium, and Large dim-sum plates. This place doesn't offer chili oil during dim-sum service, but provides a more budget chili sauce upon request. Service was prompt and efficient, even considering the crowd. The men's restroom was adequately maintained, but my companion said that the women's restroom was in an unacceptable condition.

I love this narrow, old school, and yes, slightly dingy, little shop on Grand Street for all of the above reasons -- but also because staff are sincerely kind and friendly to customers of all backgrounds. (I overheard one in the middle of a smile-filled language exchange with a Spanish-speaking co-worker.) Unlike some places, there aren't covert second looks for African American friends I've brought by. There are a number of places selling similar products as Kong Kee. (There's another soy bean product specialist a block away, w/ a side trade in cheung fun, as well, like Kong Kee -- but the staff there are dour even to regulars.) Given that Kong Kee is of even quality with, or of higher quality than, other soy product specialists I know of in Chinatown, the lovely staff at Kong Kee easily tip the scales. Kong Kee has become our go-to. Two products to try here if you're not familiar: - Soy Milk / Dou Jiang -- It's completely different from what brands like Silk market as soy milk at Whole Foods. Dou jiang has a nuttier, more complex scent. My 10-year old likes Kong Kee's dou jiang the best since it's mild in scent and flavor, and not overly thick. (I know this is a stylistic preference. Some Buddhist temples are famous for selling very, very thick and concentrated dou jiang.) You can purchase it plain, or with sugar or salt added. - Douhua / tofu custard -- Think silken tofu. Then think double the silkiness. Think freshly made nutty aroma, still warm in winter (or chilled in summer). I think most folks eat it as a dessert with sugar syrup poured over and it is delightful that way. But I prefer to take mine home and drizzle it chilled with soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, chives, and cilantro. It's the most perfect summer dish I know.
