There's one only one staffer working here today when we stopped in, normally there are two. I'm not sure if I should attribute that to the changed quality of the food. They were out of the buns, so we ended up with 13 dumplings for $5. The meat was the same inside, though they used a lot less leek than they used to probably because of cost. The outside however wasn't crunchy like you'd expect from potstickers and instead was all soggy which was a bit of a disappointment. They still sell frozen versions in the freezers. Service was quick and efficient, the lady takes your money and serves you your dumplings in a half tray and you can add your own sauce. No napkins, very simple. Only cash. There's not much space inside, just a counter and a space for people to move through and order. Ever feel like you are in a movie? That was me on the day I visited Chinatown. We were early for a Gangster and Ghost Tour so we wanted a quick bite to eat. Then we stumbled on this place on a nondescript alley. No real sitting area. Most their business is to go. Who doesn't want some fried dumplings right? I am sure, some of the best unknown places in the world to eat are tucked away like this spot. Paper signs on the window announcing prices in crooked handwriting. I love coming to see the "mean" lady. There's a language barrier as well as a culture barrier, but these dumplings are everything. Best bang for your buck, I even buy them frozen cause coming to the city is a hike. Not much seating - a couple of counter spots - so don't expect to luxuriate. I went with the "eat and walk" approach, despite the rain. TLDR: not my cup of tea, but still (tied) for the cheapest frozen dumplings in Manhattan Before I start this off, a disclaimer: I've tried all the major dumpling stores in Chinatown alongside my own northern Chinese mother's homemade dumplings so naturally, I'll have high expectations. Visuals: Taken out of the freezer, they looked fine (see photo 1) if a bit small. It's very odd that they have zero grooves or pleats though. Interestingly enough, these are the first dumplings in my life (besides Ling Ling Costco dumplings) I've eaten without them... Skin: Very thick and chewy after boiling- not my personal preference (I like thin skin that allows for more mouthfeel of the chives and pork), but I know a lot of people like them. Insides: This is my major issue with these dumplings. Its clear that they are catered to a Western palate- the inside is chock full of a brown soy-sauce soup like mixture that overpowers the pork and chives completely (see photo 2). Even upon dipping them in soy sauce, I couldn't taste anything but the pre-seasoned mixture. I've noticed this in a few other Chinatown dumpling shops (mainly C and L) and it grinds my gears like nothing else. Authentic traditional dumplings should never have any sort of 'strong flavoring' on the inside- save that for the Shanghainese soup dumplings. Verdict: You get what you pay for, but then again, alongside Jin Mei, you're never going to find another Manhattan dumpling shop that's willing to sell you frozen dumplings 10 a piece for 2$. Crazy value and I'd recommend coming here if you don't mind eating Americanized dumplings. read more

Bad dumplings, and even worse customer service. I want to note that due to COVID, they are not serving small orders. I had not seen the sign so I already had taken out my $2 and when I asked for an order of 5 fried dumplings, the lady pointed out the sign on the table and told me they were only doing big orders. Definitely a no frills spot so don't expect much. Cash only, no place to sit. The dumplings are extremely cheap but I found them to be underwhelming, dry and lacking in flavor. The dough was also a little too thick for my liking and overall they were cold. They also don't come with a dipping sauce but they offer hot sauce which we drenched them in to help with the flavor. I shared a 26 piece with 3 other friends which in the end was too many since we didn't enjoy it as much. Fried Dumpling has been in its location for years...heaven knows how long, and the dumplings are as good as they were years ago. The dumplings are the BEST in all of NYC. It's a small mom & pop place -actually just a mom and daughter running the place. And like all businesses, is struggling to survive in this pandemic, post-pandemic price increasing world. They used to be $1 for 5 dumplings. Now they're $5 for 10 dumplings. Still very tasty, and still an incredible bargain, considering most Chinese fast foods sell 5 dumplings for $10 around the city. I have been going here for years and generally just pick up the bags of 30 frozen dumplings to take home. All the comments about the mom working there is true. She's a bit of a character. I always want to buy two bags (limited freezer space at home), but she always hands me 3 or 4 bags and makes me buy them. It's a bit annoying. But like I said-these ARE THE BEST dumplings in NYC. They are a bit squishy and have no real flavor to them. I had to drown my dumplings in chili oil in order to be able to eat them. These are definitely not the most delicious dumplings in Chinatown. The service here is also not great, like many other Yelpers have said. However Fried Dumpling does its job as a cheap filler. The old lady behind the counter does this job to put her daughter through school and does her best to make ends meet. Hits the spot. No, it's not the most amazing dumplings I've ever had nor is it about service. This place brings me back to the food stalls and street food of Asia. Cleanliness probably is not the #1 priority. Small menu, you go up, place your order with the one lady, and proceed to gobble dumplings in a matter of minutes. Now, these aren't large or regular sized dumplings. They are rather thin. So 15 dumplings here are probably around the size of 8-10 dumplings elsewhere. The dumplings are also not that good.
