We loved the location and the outside seating of this spot in Old City. The food was okay. Best part of the meal were the fruit topped French toast (if sweet is your thang)and the roasted potatoes. Interesting interior - bright, open, airy, pictures of headless naked bodies hanging on the walls. There's also a gift shop area. It seems like this place serves basic brunch food. I got salmon eggs Benedict because I wanted to try the sweet potato rosti. It's basically potato hash, and it was soggy under the sauce and eggs, so I regretted getting it. It wasn't bad, I just wished I had tried something else, like the mushroom toast, which is a popular dish according to the server. Also got the continental breakfast, which is a lot of food, all good. The employee took away a plate with cream cheese on it before I was done, so he brought extra cream cheese out, which was kind (even though I didn't want to eat more cream cheese - I appreciate the sentiment and customer service). I'd rate this place 3/5, but just for the kind act, I'll rate it 4/5. Kindness and customer service matter a lot to me. Drinks were orange juice and Bangkok tea. The water cups are so small, and I wish they were bigger so that I could drink more freely, or at least leave a big bottle on the table. read more

Frieda always comes up when I try to Yelp for good brunch places in Old City so I decided to take a quick walk over and see what all the buzz was. Immediately entering, it felt very calming as it's this large white box-space with high ceilings. There's a goods store/display right near the entrance where the sell their jams, cards, local items, and Harney & Son's teas. You can either take pastries to go or dine in. I had some time for dine in and as it wasn't too busy (late morning/weekday) I was immediately seated. Service was quick and food came out fairly quickly. Got a hot water with lemon and an avocado toast with salmon. The avocado toast with salmon was two pieces and the ingredients on top were piled high in the toast. A little messy to bite into but the bread was warm and toasty--pesto and arugula provided some sharpness to the salmon and avocado. The tomato slices added some freshness. Got a free refill on the hot water and when I was done with my meal, my plate got cleared pretty quickly. Payment is at your table with a credit card. Looking forward to coming back and trying some other items on the menu when I have some more time to sit and relax. read more

I really enjoyed sitting outside and having breakfast at Frieda. The salmon croissant was delicious! They were generous with the salmon and whipped cheese and the croissant was buttery, crisp on the outside, and flakey. The fruit bowl was a good size. My friend enjoyed the avocado toast, but it was nothing special. However, I had maybe the worst iced matcha latte of my life here! The matcha they use is not good. Avoid at all costs. Also, the service was so, so slow. We were in no rush to go anywhere so it was fine, but something to keep in mind if you're planning on dining here. read more

The food was ok, but the service was really snarky. After waiting for about half an hour for our order, the server explained that the kitchen was "literally the size of a food truck." That's really no problem. If she had just let us know, we would have understood. But the food arrived cold, which means that, even though there were plenty of servers and runners for so few tables, it was just sitting there and she blamed the kitchen (I worked in kitchens; not cool). Really, all of that isn't so bad - it happens - but she was so rude about it, in a really passive aggressive way. Not worth almost $60 for cold eggs and eye rolling. read more

It's been 5 years since my review of Frieda, so here I go about to gush over how great this cafe is, post-2020 era and all! Frieda is fantastic. Their mission is to connect generations (see my 2016 review), and they continued to offer programming online post-2020 (with helpful how-to instructions for folks who needed it). Programming includes book clubs, language groups, meditation groups, language groups. You name it, they have it, virtually or (slowly) in person. The cafe is set up outdoors on the sidewalk and in a couple parking spaces. They have had this set up since before the days of Covid, but it became essential after the shutdown. They also have limited seating indoors, if interested. The outdoors space includes lots of greenery, so even if you are near a table, you may have a large plant or 2 placed between the tables for privacy. Nice touch! The food is still on point. They offer a breakfast menu all morning and afternoon and a lunch menu at lunch. They have takeout dinners as well. They will deliver to nearby zip codes. The pastries are some of the best in the Philly area (have you TRIED their almond croissants?!?!). Check out Frieda in the 2020s. You'll be glad you did! read more

I ordered the continental breakfast which came with a croissant, toasted brioche, smoked salmon, prosciutto, gruyère, brie, whipped herb cream cheese, a hard boiled egg, and granola or bircher muesli for just $13! I thought it was such a good deal and super filling!! However, my friends meals didn't seem as worth it or as filling which is why I'm giving four stars instead. The continental breakfast was def worth and I'd recommend getting it when you come to Frieda. My boyfriend and I were visiting Philly for a quick weekend trip and enjoyed the most delicious breakfast here. To start our server Sabrina made us feel right at home and gave us a few recommendations. We both had lattes, foamy and warm as they hit your mouth. We also shared the mushroom toast which was out of this world, the poached eggs, the bread pudding and the gorgeous sauce. I'll dream about that toast for a while. Our chocolate almond croissant was pure bliss, the fruit was fresh and ripe and the potatoes were crispy and moist as you bit into them. Not to the mention they sell the most beautiful art, and make their own jam and granola. You bet your bottom dollar we bought some strawberry jam, a granola bar and the Elixr coffee. Frieda is fascinating. It's truly a shining star in the midst of a scarily selfish world - definitely take a look at their website to learn more about their mission to reconnect generations/the community! Of course, the ambience is bright and colorful, and the food is good - I've been here for coffee/pastries, and afternoon tea (the most recent time I got the (extremely moist) orange cake, yum). But it's the people there that make it great. The first time I went to Frieda, we asked to contribute to the big art piece on the wall (at the time) and they happily allowed us to, even giving us little chocolate cookies to snack on while we worked on our little squares of colored paper. Id heard a lot of hype about frieda and it was definitely nice but imo did not blow me away. The fall vegan bowl was okay but such a small portion of just like a handful of arugula and some small butternut squash and pecan pieces on top. The bread basket was ok, i didnt think the pastries were too amazing, not very flaky croissants, although i did like the pain au chocolat. The scone was also pretty good. I also unfortunately wasnt a fan of the chai and found it a little on the watery side. Im def being overly critical because overall the food was good but i dont think id come back read more

Really wanted to like Freida: with a bright, cheery decor, it exudes charm, but a $72 breakfast (for two) was simply not worth it. The $5.00 hot chocolate, 50¢ extra for a daub of canned topping, was a water-based Swiss Miss, or somesuch. The fluffly American omelet ($18) was also cold, with the diced ham apparently straight from the icebox, accompanied by a tiny, toasted bit advertised as "brioche," but could have come from any baguette. And the bechamel in the croque monsieur was just "off,"--maybe thyme????, not a usual ingredient. The almond croissant we ordered was anything but flaky.....Disappointing. read more

This place is a hidden gem! I walk passed it and wanted to just grab a coffee and a cookie but found out they actually serve brunch! They did have a server at that moment, not sure is it because of the pandemic or it's always been like this. They did have 4-5 tables outside the café for people to use, it has a canteen style where you order your food in the counter and grab yourself a table if any of the them are available. I order a spinach quiche and a continental breakfast, it had me surprised of how tasty the foods are. Not only is the food absolutely exquisite in flavor and depth, but the staff has such a wholesome attitude to them. You can tell the head chef / owner was born for hospitality, I could feel he knew that each moment is unique and special. The front space is lined with speciality made items for yourself or to make the perfect gift. One wall is full of creative community programs. I was really underwhelmed with my experience and I think that maybe I was too excited before coming here. The outside exterior of the restaurant and the indoor vibe is so different from any other restaurant. The inside looks like an art gallery that converted from an old loft. Inside it is bright with high ceilings and then different color paint chippings decorating all the side walls. The menu was interesting, but the food was such a disappointment. We started with a lemon poppy scone and it just had no taste. It was dry and seemed like it was missing the buttery element of a scone. We then went with egg white omelet with veggies. It was fine, but just not super memorable. The service seemed very distracted. We were given the wrong drinks and I just didn't feel like we were checked on besides ordering and paying. Outside seating is wonderful, the little gift/art shop always has plenty to see and their community connection is admirable. Get this if it's the one thing you're getting here. I also got a side of the multigrain toast and chorizo with the cortado. Absolutely delicious sausage and perfect coffee! Came here this weekend for brunch with a friend! Despite it being a Saturday at 10am, there were still a few tables open inside and out. There's a very cool shopping area in the front of the space selling artisan goods. There is also a to-go counter with coffee and pastries. We sat down and split a chocolate almond croissant, and then I ordered the Frieda, which was poached eggs over mushroom bread pudding. Highly recommend! My friend got one of the omelets which I didn't try. My only gripe is that, as other reviewers have noted, the bamboo disposable silverware (while I love that it is compostable), sucks to eat with. The tines of the fork are too short and the knife too dull. We both got lattes as well which were delicious. Can't wait to come back! read more

Most instagrammable cafe spot in Philly for sure! Everything is so light and feathery and kind of makes you feel like you're in a museum. The ambience definitely gave off French bakery vibes. Everyone was dressed super cute and had a certain demeanor amongst them. I ordered the Egg White Omelette, which was so amazing. It was basically a goat cheese omelette with tomatoes and different squash's. The flavors worked very well together and it absolutely melted in my mouth. The omelette came with brioche bread on the side and with the jam/butter it came with, it was irresistible (also came with a little cup of fruit). 10/10 in my books! I also ordered the matcha latte, there was nothing special about it and it sort of tasted like matcha and milk. The chai latte however was bursting of spices, just the right amount of sweetness and perfect for the winter weather! The servers were also the absolute friendliest! I like what Frieda is doing. They have a noble mission. The spot is stylish, and staff are welcoming. Their shop has cool items for sale. I had breakfast, arriving shortly after they opened. Snagged an outdoor table since the dogs were with us. Glad I arrived early, since they quickly filled up. My Vietnamese iced coffee was different from what I expected, but smooth and delicious. The food was good. The dishes are not run-of-the-mill and have a little creative twist. I can't wait to go back and try the pastries. read more

I went to Frieda for the first time for an alumni afternoon tea and book signing. I had no idea it existed before then, but it's a really cute little cafe/pastry shop/art gallery/community shop. It is really a multi-purpose space! They also sell creations made by people of all different generations so it's a space to try to bring different types of people together. They have tea, coffee other drinks and pastries. For our tea, I got the cinnamon spice tea and it was really good. We also had some really good tea sandwiches, scones and pastries. First off, my cat's name is Frida so when this popped up on Yelp I absolutely had to go, even with the spelling difference. The cafe is adorable with the plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, extremely friendly service, and good food. I enjoyed the yogurt parfait that had plenty of fruit in it, as well as the almond croissant. I also liked the Paris Fog I got with it. They have a ton of pastry options and I'd definitely go back to try more. One piece of feedback - I LOVE that they give you wooden utensils in the name of sustainability - but the wooden knife was basically useless on the almond croissant. I had wanted to cut and eat it to not get my hands dirty and ended up having to just bite into it. I don't know if there's another sustainable brand that's slightly more efficient? So I stumbled into this breakfast locale after completing the Philly 10k race on a beautiful Sunday morning and was very pleased I found this restaurant. Very open spacing on the tables which gives off a leisurely demeanor in a beautiful part of town. I stopped in for an iced coffee for a pick me up after the race and ended up buying one of there desserts which was described by the cashier as a crossiant rolled up into a muffin topped with sugar and cinnamon. The dessert tasted very light and gave me the vibe I have to come back and try the breakfast for a full proper review! Loved the ambience of this place and the service. Super clean and COVID friendly. We had the baker's basket which was great except there way too much toast. It included the almond croissant and pain au chocolat, both amazing, a scone (which was okay) and the toast that I mentioned with jam. We also had the Chocolate Almond Croissant which was pretty good but if you want to order one thing for your sweet tooth, I would suggest the pain au chocolat The best thing on the menu was the Salmon Croissant. The capers and cheese were just perfect. Wow. I would come back for this any day. We also had the Spinach Quiche which was crispy and fresh and full of flavour. The french omelette was probably something I won't order again; nothing wrong with, just not for me. I will say that it was cooked to perfection- fluffy and light and it came with multigrain bread. My friend's kiddo loved it. I'm a sucker for good service and this place is run by the most polite and delightful folks. I loved everything about my experience here. read more

still a super cute place staff is typically very nice and they were mostly nice this time around. went to meet up with a roommate and look through some apartments, I wasn't aware I was unable to use my laptop in a specific part of the restaurant they very kindly moved me and the rest of my party to the cafe style area. after ordering our tea we waited about 30+ minutes for our food and meanwhile we were asked to leave because we had been there too long, I kindly said that we hadn't received our food yet and then the host apologized and went to check on our food. after that they were very kind and the food was just as good as last time and I love the art installs. read more

Came right around opening on a Saturday and it got busy fairly quickly. I got their pastry basket consisting of a variety of baked goods, which was a smaller size than I expected. The scone and croissants were well made, but I didn't enjoy the toasted brioche, which just tasted like dry toast. The basket also came with butter and 2 jams (peach and blueberry). The jams were good, particularly the peach, though both were a little too sweet for my taste. Overall 3.5/5 - pretty good but didn't reel me in. read more

A super cute brunch place with a wide variety of pastries. I find the portions fine, but it really varies with every dish (the continental breakfast comes with a lot of sides). I personally enjoy the mini waffles, but my partner doesn't like thin waffles, so that is something to consider. Amazing brunch - amazing place! So bright & welcoming. Visiting from Houston and so glad we stopped in for brunch. Greeted kindly and quickly seated. I had the mushroom toast and will be craving it! Husband had the full English and loved it. We had to try the homemade jam so got a slice of brioche with jam as our "brunch dessert" - delicious! FRIEDA's is a true hidden gem in Old City. I visited this morning and sat outside to enjoy my coffee and Baker's Basket. The breads and pastries in the basket were delicious and perfect for two people (though I'd also have NO issues eating it myself..yum). It's located next to the Polish Heritage Center and I'm not sure if the two are associated but I felt like I could have been sitting outside a coffee shop in Poland. I loved the decor and the plants surrounding each table. I will definitely return and highly recommend FRIEDA to anyone and everyone. FRIEDA is a must visit! read more

Sweet cafe/brunch spot, located in the charming old city area! The decor is simple, modern, and artistic with cute little trinkets and such on display that you can purchase. I appreciated their wide range of options for breakfast and brunch foods on the menu, and a variety of drinks as well. The croissants have diverse fillings that my friend and I thought were really delicious, and there were other types of baked goods that I wanted to try on the menu too. We came during covid summer, so there was no indoor seating, but they had a few tables and chairs outside. We were fortunate to snag a spot but there is limited space and several people who came after us were not able to sit.
