Very nice place for brunch. Staff were nice but services were super slow. They had 3 waiters but seem like the kitchen was constantly running behind and all the tables were only 60% filled. For foods, we ordered the mushrooms and poached eggs, avocado toast and poached eggs, quiche, potato's and poached eggs, and a bakers basket. For drinks, we ordered a latte, a drip, and a Vietnamese coffee. I'm Vietnamese and I wouldn't call what they serve a Vietnamese coffee. It wasn't even close to taste, smell, or look like one. We expected the bakers basket to come out rather sooner than the rest since it just needs assembling, and they forgot to bring them out until all the other foods were ready (30mins into our coffee and we had to ask if anything will come out soon). Mushrooms on toast and poached eggs was a must-have, quiche was quite delicious, avocado toast has a fresh pesto that was tasty. Everything in the bakers basket was great except the scone (too dry and too much cinnamon powder in the batter). Potato was okay. Great spot to hang out for brunch. LOVE LOVE LOVE theirs jams, but definitely eat some foods before you go since there's consistent complain about foods being late. read more

After driving down to Philly, Frieda was a stop on the tourist day while wifey's friend was visiting from California. There was a bit of a wait, but not too long, which is a great sign when trying out a new establishment. The decor was very artsy, with various pieces for both display and sale. Not my cup of tea, nor for that price, but those who are into the scene can snag some cool stuff. One can also buy the teas and jams to take him or as gifts. Once seated, we divided and conquered the menu. We had a variety of caffeinated beverages, breakfast items, pasties, fruits and jams. They were all delicious, and for the price, they had better been. The chocolate croissant was favorite - the cool kids might say it slapped! Overall, I don't think I'll be itching to come back next time I'm in town but I'm glad I experienced it! read more

I hung out here for hours waiting to be picked up from family coming through Philly from Virginia and I was treated with respect and like family for HOURS. The food was delicious!! I very much enjoyed the outdoor patio, and the decorative butterflies were just amazing. Our waitress was a little jaded, and there were many cars speeding past, but we still had a nice time! I wish my quiche was larger, but the house salad it came with was pretty big to make up for it. What a fantastic place to go for a brunch bite! The restaurant interior is gorgeous, with walls completely covered in gradients of paint color palette styles, forming a giant rainbow painted across the walls. The food is also very tasty, and I highly recommend their bread basket - after going to some other places in the city, I definitely realize that I didn't appreciate how fresh and soft their breads are (likely from a copious helping of butter, but oh well). The waiter for our table was very courteous and attentive, and quickly came back once we were ready to order. Even though it was a fairly busy morning, and there were plenty of other diners coming in and out, that didn't result in any delays or impacts on the dining experience. If anything, the only complaint that I would have with the restaurant is their chair selection - while modernist plastic chairs fit well with the setting, on wet or humid days like the day that we went, the chairs seemed to catch the moisture in the air from the door swinging open again and again, and your seat slowly got damp the longer that you were sitting there. read more

Went here alone for lunch around 1pm on a Tuesday. It was not crowded, especially towards the end of my meal. There is cute seating outside but I decided to sit inside for the AC. Inside there is a good amount of seating, and there is artwork decorating the walls, plus some cute butterfly decorations hanging from the ceiling. I ordered the continental breakfast, a latte with oat milk, and a side of chorizo. The continental breakfast was very filling and generous. The muesli was particularly good and there was ample fruit in it. The chorizo was delicious as well. I think the latte could be improved -- it seemed to use less milk than normal? In the photo I included, you can see that after a few sips all the foam is gone and it looks just like regular coffee, which defeats the purpose of ordering a latte IMO. The service was overall great, I got a calm but welcoming vibe. One server offered to fill my water bottle for me which I thought was very nice as it was very hot outside. I do think there were a couple of mistakes with my order however; I ordered the continental breakfast with granola instead of muesli (I didn't mind this change though since the muesli was really good) and I ordered my latte with oat milk, but it tasted suspiciously like regular milk. Overall, I recommend this as a place as a cute and laidback spot for brunch or tea (they seem to have an extensive tea menu). read more

We bookmarked this place a while back but was in the area and search came up again and decided to try. The outside was not what was expected since we were looking for a restaurant. The outside looks like a museum gift shop. We went in and ordered from a simple menu but complex tea and coffee menu. Everything was good and the pastry was up to my Parisian husband's liking. I was a bit weird out with the plastic and disposable plates and utensils. I guess that's the new thing. I just prefer in real silverware and real plates and bowls. By far, it was the worst cafe experience I have had in my many trips to Philadelphia. We came in around 8:45 AM on a Thursday. The staff immediately acts confused about our arrival. The website and Google stats say they open at 8 AM for breakfast. They explain that the kitchen won't be open until 9 AM. We say sure we will have coffee first and then order. They seat us and then virtually ignore us for the next 10 minutes even though there's no one else seated. They finally bring coffee. We ask for sugar and Splenda. They bring us a tray with sugar and other artificial sweeteners, but no Splenda. We ask if they have it. The woman says curtly, if it's not in the sugar holder, they don't have it. No apology and almost suggesting we were wrong for asking. The coffee is bland and lacks richness. They water glasses are of a ridiculous near thimble size, and they barely came back to refill. Why not leave a water pitcher if you are going to use such dumb water glasses? When they did come to fill up the water glasses, they picked up the glass by the rim with bare, unsanitized hands. That's a very poor and unhygienic way to handle a customer's drinkware. They did similarly with coffee refills. This is an unnecessary and careless germ transmission. The food was mediocre, and even the almond croissant was uninspired. The salad was actually the tastiest of what we ordered. The ambiance is cold and industrial with cheap Ikea chairs and tables, which are placed too close together. The bowls are similarly foolishly small and hard to eat from. It's all artistic minded but no disciplined execution or little functional value. Cheap paper placements complete the lameness. The owner should probably stick to doing her art. She doesn't belong in the food service industry. Or if she does miraculously stay in business, she needs to bring in a food service manager to overhaul and retrain her staff in acceptable food hygiene practices and customer service. read more

Outstanding! Love everything about this neighborhood charming spot. Have had countless brunches here and the food is always delicious and the servers are so kind. We hosted a baby shower for a friend over the weekend. It was high tea with a delightful selection of scones, tea sandwiches, desserts and an assortment of teas. The space is lovely, intimate and easy to decorate, the staff was incredibly helpful and the food was perfect for the occasion. Would highly recommend Frieda for an event. What a refreshing place to eat brunch on Walnut Street! It is easily walking distance from Old Town. The menu had nice choices. We ordered the American omelette and mini waffles along with a chai latte and hot cocoa. The hot cocoa was a bit too sweet...for our taste. The vibe was chill and airy...not hurried. P.S. At first when you pass by, it looks more like a small store than a restaurant, but once you walk in you can see the cafe behind all of their items for sale (which are very cute). The vibe is great here - the staff is so friendly and they have a wide selection of food on their menu. All of their baked items looked delicious - if we were hungrier, we definitely would have ordered some to start with. The oat latte was delicious, and my boyfriend and I both loved our breakfast (we both got avocado toast, but he added an egg on his). The ambiance made this experience so much better - lots of art on the walls and they are painted bright white, which is lovely. I got the continental breakfast which was about $15 and included a lovely spread of salmon, chèvre cheese, prosciutto, a hard cheese, and four pieces of brioche toast (warm and crispy) as well as a croissant. It was arranged in small and appealing portions and satisfied the part of me that likes to nibble on different things like a little forager. We started late this morning, as we're on California time, so we had to find someplace that was still serving breakfast. Thanks to your recommendation, we found Frieda's. It is an adorable cafe with mouthwatering food and impeccable service. Did I forget to mention the coffee and teas? Those were amazing as well! I can't even tell you the best part, because there were so many! At first glance, you are enchanted by the ambiance flowing out from the cafe. A beautifully decorated outdoor seating area immediately welcomes you into the cafe. Then upon entry to the cafe, you are greeted by a friendly staff member surrounded by a small boutique like setting. Intricate paper crafts and other novelties adorn the shelves. And what's more, is the items are created by local Philadelphians between the ages of 18-80. Maybe that's the best part. By the time you order, you have fallen completely in love with this small cafe. My mama ordered a delicious avocado toast with poached eggs. While I ordered a savory mushroom toast with fried eggs. The pictures don't do it justice. The chef, who personally delivered our food, was very kind and catered to our every wish. On my recent trip to Philly, I loved Frieda so much I came here three times. That is something I never do ever, as I usually try to experience as many spots in a city as humanly possible while traveling. But I was so smitten with Frieda that I genuinely looked forward to returning. MISSION: Frieda is an intergenerational restaurant, community center, art gallery, bakery, and coffee shop. Its primary identity may be a restaurant, but they often flip the space for workshops, readings, and other cool classes. They sell amazing local goods by local makers, and I love their statement about their artists, bakers and employees: "And while you're here, know that any money you spend at FRIEDA helps us create fair-wage jobs for people of all generations - many of them retired, but still needing to work to make ends meet - as well as support our Outreach Community Program." FOOD + DRINK: Reasonably priced and crave-worthy. The salmon avocado toast was beautifully presented, had delicious flavor and was very generous. As for bakery, my Mom and I both agreed their croissant was the best we've ever had. Thick but still flaky and melt-in-your-mouth chocolate. The London Fog and other coffee drinks we had were always well-made and satisfying. SERVICE + VIBE: Nahir is amazing. I actually hugged him on my final visit! We had so many great chats about Frieda's programs, the menu, and just Philly in general. He went above and beyond. The vibe here is very white and minimal, but open and airy. You get a great feeling just sitting there and existing. I wish this spot was in Cleveland because I'm obsessed with its multi-faceted approach to community and its inclusiveness. Probably more of high 3, food is good, decor inside is more of the ikea style treatment. Not very family friendly as no changing table or high chairs. Not sure how long they've been in business but they should look into that stuff. If you are into ECO friendly this place does hit that mark, gives you what you need as in will hand you specific amounts of things sugars, syrups, bamboo utensils, just not a wasteful place. Portions are good sized. If it was more family friendly/better ambiance I'd probably give it more of 4.5. My avocado toast was bomb exceptional. read more

(4.5 stars) After stopping in for lunch this week, I gotta say I'm a big fan of this cafe. It doesn't feel like an American cafe at all. Lots of natural light, simple yet sleek white furniture, high ceilings, trinkets at the front, art and group gatherings across from the dining tables. It honestly feels almost like an Amsterdam export. My only real complaint would be the menu, which feels somewhat limited in its abdunace of healthy vegetarian options. The avocado toast with salmon was light yet filling, and had both more salmon and more avocado than any bagel or toast I've ever gotten. Like seriously, kudos to them for not skimping on portions. I just wish it had more pesto because pesto is incredible and it helped unify the toast. Not sure what I would order next time, though would probably struggle to decide for a while before just picked the avocado toast again. read more

What a surprise Frieda was! We loved it. The food was delicious and the coffee was strong. We had the salmon avocado toast- and yes it may have a lot of salmon and a ton of avocado but I'm a believer that you can't ever have enough of either so I was loving the toast. The quiche we had was fantastic. Cheesy and yummy- would recommend. The food took a bit to get but you could tell everything was made from scratch so well worth it. The place is so artsy- but like a cool vibe not stuffy. The pastries looked incredible and we will definitely come back and try some. If you love a poached egg but hate when it comes tasting like vinegar, then this is a place for you to feel safe and secure. The eggs are poached perfectly in water only. Portions are generous and the servers are friendly to kids/families. Currently up on the walls is a beautiful installation made of paint color swatches. The ambience is playful and casual but clean and refined. I'm usually more of a savory breakfast person but I tasted my friend's waffle and I would definitely order it myself. I chose outdoor seating as personal caution against COVID and the sight and table setting is charming... feels great!
