This is a worthy place to add to the rotation of Chelsea Market restaurant offerings. A friend and I whimsically decided to have dinner here a couple of nights ago as he brought me to visit CM for the first time.
They were having a special on beer (pitcher for $4), and appetizers. Needless to say, we took advantage of both! Well, truth be told, my friend just went with a tall glass of beer, but we did order both the special appetizers -- the spicy, Cajun (I think) chick peas, and the Reuben sliders -- they were wonderful. Along with that, we also shared a brown rice bowl with grilled chicken, and the B.L.A.T. sandwich (apple-smoked bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, with herbed aioli on sourdough bread). There were some mixed reactions for the both of us. I really enjoyed the spicy chickpeas, they were crispy on the outside, from what I presume to be a flash fry, yet they maintained that classic, soft chick pea texture when bitten into. My friend didn't like it at all (I think he has bad taste), but he thought it was bland and did not appreciate the natural order of a chick pea to have been toyed with. What we did agree on where the Reuben sliders. These were phenomenally delicious (for me, it was the best thing we had at Friedman's Lunch).. they came as small sandwiches, three to a plate, a nice stack of corned beef, melted cheese on toasty rye bread. It was moderately greasy, but very flavorful. My B.L.A.T. sandwich was alright. I liked how the bacon was fried to a near crisp, though, I think it could have been a bit crispier. On the downside, I did not really get a hint of the apple-smoked aspect of the bacon. These days, I have been under the duress of severe allergies making it quite difficult to really taste food so I assume it was my fault and that the bacon, was indeed apple-smoked in flavor (but, it's weird that I got the full effect of those spicy chick peas). Now, the brown rice bowl -- no matter how stunted my tastebuds were -- was definitely bland. I remember commenting to my friend that it was as if they took the contents of a microwaveable meal and dumped that into the bowl. I wasn't getting any stand out flavors, and there seemed to have been a lot of rice and not much grilled chicken. My friend really enjoyed it though he did remark that it was a bit like fried rice (meaning, a bit too oily). We were too stuffed to have any dessert, but I was eyeing the flour-less chocolate cake and had I the gumption to eat more, I would have chosen to go with that for sure.
The meal wasn't expensive, but it wasn't cheap either. We both spent about $25 pp. I suppose that is standard for the Chelsea area. What I also liked about Friedman's is the decor and mood, it almost felt upscale, and it's nice how they don't rush you at all. You can eat, and chat, and enjoy your meal without being shooed to leave. read more
