Note: I would give this 4 1/2 stars if possible.
Allow me to jump on the "oh good lord this gluten free brunch is amazing" bandwagon. The food is divine! Before I throw out my list, let me assure you of one thing... This is a celiac-friendly place that actually also serves good food. Too often I find my boyfriend stomaching food he can't really stand, so that I'm able to eat. Even he said the food at Friedman's rocked.
Why I dig Friedman's:
1.) It's in Chelsea market. Now, my boyfriend lives in Chelsea, so I'm in the market all the time... But I can still totally see its allure and cuteness.
2.) You can get a ton of stuff prepared gluten free. Most of their brunch, with the exception of grits, can be prepared gluten free.
3.) Good beer and wine selection. Friedman's had a cider I had never heard of and a couple cheap but great wines available. Usually if a place has GF food, I expect their alcohol list to be jacked up and/or suck.
4.) The food. Oh good god, the food. I got the fried chicken and cheddar waffles, and my boyfriend got the southern breakfast (grits, fried green tomatoes, etc.) We also got a side of fries and he got matzoh ball soup. The meals were excellent and seemed to get better with every bite. However, the fries were the best I've had yet. Try them. Love them. You won't be sorry.
Why Friedman's can be lame for some people:
1.) It's family style seating. If you're not a fan of sitting next to someone you don't know, Friedman's isn't for you. You do not have one designated waiter, as everyone sits at one table. As a result of family style seating, I would not bring groups of more than 4. There were a group of 7 touristy girls that had to wait about 45 mins for a table while we were eating.
2.) Apparently having dairy in their food is an issue, judging by the previous reviews. All I can say is call before you go. Friedman's is generally pretty accommodating with substitutions, so don't lose hope.
3.) It's not cheap. Boyfriend and I spent about 50 dollars on our food (app, fries, 2 meals, alcohol, tip.) Honestly, if you have an issue with spending 50 dollars on brunch, you should not go to most places in Meatpacking or Chelsea, Friedman's included. Their entire menu and prices are posted on their website, so please read before going if money is a concern.
4.) Weird service. The first time boyfriend and I went to Friedman's, we had missed brunch by about 10 mins. This creepy holier-than-thou host was standing outside and goes "I'm sorry you missed brunch. mmm.. if you would like, you may come back in a half hour for dinner. That's all I can offer at this time, thank you." all in one breath. Very odd, hence the 4 1/2 stars if I could.
Bottom line: Great, if slightly expensive, place for gluten-free brunch! Good for parties less than 4, good alcohol, and amazing fries. read more
