Disappointing. The frites were nothing like the lovely crisp twice-cooked ones I loved in Belgium. To be fair, I went back a second time and asked them to make the frites extra crisp. They were darker, but still not particularly crisp on the outside. The rosemary oil I requested was very mild the first time, and flavorless the second time. Maybe they forgot it? The Belgian sauce was flavorful but again didn't taste like Belgian frite sauce. I've tried three flavors of their ice cream now. All were pleasant enough but none particularly memorable. I had the Earl Grey ice cream and went immediately back for more. Really delicious. Very friendly counter help. Four stars because they don't allow you to taste flavors before you buy, though most ice cream stores do.They have a sign explaining why they don't. Their points were not convincing. I'd rather pay more per cone so everyone can try first to know what they want. It's what patrons expect, it's practically an American tradition. I thought their reason #3, "What other places let you try the food before you buy it?" was a bit whiny . Dude, it's ice cream, not lobster. Lobster comes in one flavor - lobster. This is my favorite little spot in Astoria. The ice cream is delectable and the fries... oh, the fries. They come blanched and there are so many different dipping sauces to choose from. It's an amazing little combination that just can't be beat. The cons: they do not allow you to taste the ice creams, which can make it difficult to commit when you don't know if you're going to like it or not! Also, the shop is open only a few hours per week. Located at the end of the pier, the team was ready to serve the long line of customers and had safety measures in place for COVID-19. We had ordered the Hokey Pokey and Golden Milk which were delicious. The Hokey Pokey is your traditional sweet cream with a piece of cake in it. While the Golden Milk was a unique flavor (has turmeric) that would be hard to find anywhere else. The scoops were larger than average which makes for a perfect stroll down the pier. read more

Always amazing ice cream! We just had our 3rd/4th visit and I realized this is definitely in the top 3 ice cream places I've had in Oregon, and we live in Portland and I've tried ice cream around the state too! Always great flavors, sweet enough but not too sweet, amazing textures, and perfect smoothness (none of that iciness! unless you're getting a fruit swirl, then that is totally understandable) and the friendliest people working there. The fries are also great- we've only had the rosemary but would love to try more in the future! The shop is very cute and cozy- you can order ice cream and/or fries, pay, then wait outside the shop at the outdoor seating area. Unfortunately they do not do samples, but everything we've tried has been good. Our favorites are hokey pokey and Astoria Fog (earl grey with blackberry swirl and most recently earl grey, since I guess blackberries aren't in season anymore. The first time my husband tried hokey pokey, we were stuffed full from lunch and he did not want to get ice cream but I convinced him to go on a walk to digest, and somehow led us to Frite and Scoop (whoops!) soo since we were already here, we had to get something! He was reluctant so I just a split scoop of hokey pokey and Astoria Fog and when he tried the hokey pokey, his eyes lit up like I've never seen him do before for an ice cream place. We sampled a few (all were amazing), but we settled on the Chef's Choice and Chunk. I really thought I'd go for the S'mores one, because anything S'mores is amazing. But I tried something new with the Chef's Choice and was pleasantly surprised. It does get crowded, but they don't try to push you out the door. I'm a huge fan of toffee and this flavor had their house made honeycomb toffee. So creamy, crunchy, amazing! Located off 14th street near the Astoria Riverwalk, this little ice cream shop also serves fries with house made dipping sauce which includes sriracha mayo, smokeypotle, and creamy basil to name a few. I didn't get a chance to try the fries, but I saw other patrons snacking on it. Looks good! My second visit, I couldn't decide which flavor I wanted, as I wanted to try a new flavor but still wanted the Hokey Pokey. The nice lady behind the counter offered to do a half & half, which I thought was very awesome of her to offer after sampling a couple of flavors. Dare I say this is some of the best ice cream I've had in a while? It may even be better than Salt & Straw. It's super creamy & the owner/maker makes everything himself. He blends his own spices for the Snickerdoodle Chai. He makes his own marshmallows for the Rocky Road. We opted for the Strawberry Oreo & Hokey Pokey (their signature flavor with honeycomb candy) mixed into one scoop on a sugar cone ($3.50). It's so darn good. A didn't even want ice cream & we were fighting over it. We also got some frites because we can never turn those down. We got the fry sauce (complimentary) & malt vinegar aioli ($.75 extra). They were nice and thickly cut potatoes. Hot and crisp. The fry sauce had a lot of pepper, which we liked. The aioli also had a good tang. There were also old fashioned bottled sodas, whoopee pies, cookies, dipped custard bars to be had. On top of that, everyone working there were super patient and nice. After being discouraged by the long wait on Saturday, I made sure we arrived when the doors opened on Sunday at noon. The location is great on the pier, with an indoor area to sit and eat on picnic benches if the weather outside is too hot, too cold, or too windy. If the weather is pleasant you can enjoy your ice cream and/or fries on the pier. It is also across the street from the farmer's market on Sunday so a great combo trip if you can beat the crowds. Frite & Scoop offers 12 flavors daily, and it was helpful to check out the current flavors in advance on their Facebook page. They were still generous with samples while we chose our final selections. Even for the small cone, you can choose two flavors and they have three types of cones, including waffle, to chose from.
