You see, I am too old to go to bars and clubs, and I have 2 little children that I run after all day long, so I can't keep my eyes open much past 10pm. I'd rather get some shut-eye than go out BUT... Last night I didn't even bother to get out of my pajamas. I just threw on a jacket over my pajamas, forgetting that there are other people that actually go out after 9pm. I've been here 4 times now, and last night was my first FROST-ORGY! I thought I was going down just to have a haupia frost. Instead I ended up eating my way through 10 (that's right, TEN!) flavors. There are 21 flavors listed on the chalkboard, so we were able to conquer half of them in one sitting, if you can even imagine that. GUYS: If you're looking for something RICH, DECADENT, and SINFUL, don't call me, eat the PEANUT frost. They should call it "PEANUT BUTTER frost". I've tried almost all of the flavors and this one probably has the most calories, comes with peanut butter infused into the ice, and it's drizzled with some kind of syrup. The flavor is apparent immediately after putting the cold frost on your tongue. Think a nice cold Butterfinger. All the rest of the fruity flavors might disappoint if you want something rich. GIRLS: If you're like me and have to watch your girlish figure, all of the fruity flavors are light and delicate and have to be eaten properly to fully appreciate the entire experience. The fruity frosts are made by pulverizing real fresh fruit, milk and other secret family ingredients into a block of ice. This is why in the BLUEBERRY (my least favorite) frost you can still see and taste the little seeds and in the PEAR frost you can taste those little gritty things from the pear. No fake fruit syrups used here! Speaking of the PEAR frost...there is a proper way to eat this one. You must grab from the top of the heap, put it on your tongue and let it sit for a few seconds before your taste buds wake up to this delicate flavor. Recently, the remnants of Tropical Storm Ela passed over our islands bringing muggy weather with record high heat indexes up 100-degrees F. For as long as we've lived in the Hawaiian Islands, we've not ever experienced such oppressive heat and humidity. We've experienced similar heat and humidity in the Philippines, Singapore, Guam, Washington D.C and Florida but had sort of put those memories in the back of our minds so when we were "hit" with the muggy weather, those sticky memories rushed back. But, when you're hot and sticky, you want quick RELIEF. I had bookmarked Frostcity after reading several glowing reviews from fellow Yelpers. So, since we were in the Moiliili area, we made a beeline to this shop. We were greeted by a friendly young woman who kindly guided us through the menu featuring bubble drinks, hot and cold snacks, and their signature "Frosts". The Frost is Taiwanese Snowflake ice which is similar yet different from shave ice. Snowflake ice is made from fresh fruit juices or natural food flavors, frozen into blocks then shaved into fluffy ice shards. The treats are served in two sizes - small and regular, priced at $5.95 and $7.95 respectively. It took us a few moments to make a selection but we ended up ordering the regular combination flavors of chocolate & haupia (Hawaiian coconut pudding) for $9.50 to share. Also, with Yelp check-in, we received a 50% discount on a fresh mango-pomelo juice with tapioca bubbles. The Frost was served on a plate with fresh-cut pineapple chunks, coconut strips and more tapioca bubbles. The frozen treat was a wonderful treat and relief from the heat. It tasted like eating frozen pudding yet the texture was light as snow. If you ever had the experience of catching snowfall or snowflakes in your mouth...this is IT! Yes, it's more expensive than shave ice but for the fresh fruit flavors and light snowflake texture of these frozen treats, we'd gladly return to get relief from the heat. I was told that they use the natural fruit itself and infused with several ingredients, then frozen to make the ice blocks that is shaved. I truly believe that like my fellow Yelper, Terry K., that I too have been living under a rock recently. I was quite thankful last night when friends finally introduced me to the dessert haven known as Frostcity. It's slightly difficult to describe the frosty dishes at Frostcity, except to say that it's definitely more flavorful than shave ice and that the texture of the ice itself is much thinner and refined as well. For a first time customer/visitor like myself, I had a difficult time choosing what I wanted to order, as there are at least 20 flavors (if not more) to choose from on their menu. Besides the dessert selection, I believe there are also hot and cold teas to choose from as well. I was with a group of 8, and thankfully half of the group had been here before so I relied on them for some recommendations. In the end I chose blueberry, while others in the group chose watermelon (which was actually recommended to me), peanut, blacksesame & milk (aka black and white), and their newest flavor, strawberry cheesecake. Thankfully, I was able to sample all of the flavors that were ordered and I would have to say that I enjoyed all of the desserts....except mine!! The blueberry flavor was just tremendously underwhelming, but I'm glad to have tried it so I know to order something else on my next visit. Out of all the flavors, I would say I enjoyed the strawberry cheesecake the most, followed by a tie between the black and white and peanut. Lastly, I liked the fact that small pieces of fresh fruit was also included with the dessert. PRICE: I believe for most flavors the small size was $4.75, while the regular size was around $6. Also, if memory serves me correctly, the regular size for the black and white was $10, while the prices for the small and regular sizes of the strawberry cheesecake were $1-2 more than the other flavors we ordered. ORDER: Order at the counter from the staff, and they will provide you with a number. Your desserts and/or drink will be delivered within a few minutes of ordering at your table. TIP: Credit cards are accepted (I spied the Visa and MC logo near the cash register), but only for purchases greater than $10. SERVICE: Wonderful. The staff was pleasant and helpful, and readily came to clear away any used dishes once we were done. I also appreciated that the staff went from table to table asking customers if "everything was ok?". PARKING: Very limited. Frostcity shares a very small parking lot with other businesses. I could easily live here, not wanting to venture out of its doors at least during the three months of summer!! ...who am I kidding...we live Hawaii so I could be happy as a pink pig in a mud puddle eating frost every single day of the year! We had a bit of time to kill while in the University area..didn't feel like driving far since we had to return in an hour..we had enough time to grab a snack so of course we turn to our fellow Yelpers to guide the way! Side note..I was going to try the Durian but got overruled by my wife..maybe next time! The Mango/Strawberry was very fresh, the mango flavor actually tasted like real local mango versus a mango flavored syrup. Very good, refreshing, not too sweet, perfect for an afternoon treat. The Green Tea was also good, you could really taste the depth of flavor of the tea itself. It was a little strange to switch between the two so my wife/daughter hit the green tea while I focused on the mango/strawberry. Yum.... Apparently they changed owners but the quality of the product is still the same in my opinion. Frostcity makes a product similar to shave ice with various amounts of flavors. Their portions are huge and you can get away with sharing flavors vs. ordering one for everyone. Their fruit flavors are refreshing and their chocolate/other sweet flavors are good as well. They have their own parking lot and have board games that you can play while you eat. The dessert is definitely on the lighter side and you won't feel guilty as opposed to going to an ice cream spot. The reason for the docked star is because some flavors are really good and some flavors are really bland/don't taste good. It's really tough to make a guess but I don't think I have been to a dessert place where flavors are either a 8-10/10 or 1-2/10 with little flavors ranking in between. I'm gonna have to update with a downgrade. Now that we have spots like Snow Flakes Shavery and Kuma Snow Cream in Las Vegas, I was eager to try Frostcity again to see how it stacked up with the Las Vegas spots. One good thing is Frostcity's selections-Many flavors to choose from. This return visit, we got 2 small snow $4.75 ea. and one small combo $7.75 snow ice to try. A little over $20 for 3 smalls??? Milk Snow was okay, Avocado snow had no ribbons whatsoever(see pic) and looked like a mess on the plate, the best was the strawberry-nutella combo, but $7.75 for a small is cray-cray...The Snow Ice on all 3 plates can all fit in a monster Snow Flakes, or Sumo sized Kuma Cup for $7!!! That gives you an idea on Frostcity's portion sizes.... S-M-all... In Hawaii, Shave Ice will always be King..Next time I'll just go talk story with Uncle Clay...ALOHA!!! read more

We wanted to try something different than shaved ice and this is definitely a great find! Very different than the traditional non flavored ice with syrup. You see those interesting alternatives to ice cream around Honolulu pop up within the last few years and its beginning to take on a new shape. People seem to rave about this new concept versus actual ice cream / gelato and even shaved ice. Frozen Yogurt too. Coming here to Frost City is one of many things to do on one's weekend having fun. I remember coming here in the past with friends, but why I haven't filed a review for this place is beyond me. On my 2nd trip here to get some delicious dessert with friends, I figured I would need to file one sooner or later. It's like a small mom and pop operation here, with comfortable surroundings and a place to just chill and have a treat to cool off on a hot summer day. It's also good in the winter months, when the sweet tooth emerges and you want to have something. My friends and I arrived here around 3pm on a brisk Sunday afternoon. Not much was going on in the store at the time, so we got our orders pretty quickly. I ended up getting a chocolate shake, while my friends each got a decadent sampler of flavored snow. The restaurant seemed small, but it does have a full heart that never wavers to provide the best customer service possible. Mom and pop operations do that with a touch of love and homespun flavor. Reserve this place on your next stop for dessert. Might be the best thing ever. The restaurant was clean and felt like coming into a person's private residence. It just felt like that. The overall experience here at Frost City was nice and good. While I don't think they have a strong air conditioning inside the restaurant, it suited my needs and it was comfortable enough. My friends and I were here for an hour eating and talk story before heading back out into the real world. I could say that this place is a hidden gem, since after all, flavored snow can be called as a delicate form of decadence - aside from pure chocolate of course. So yes, it would be one of those in Honolulu. Frost City is located in the university district of urban Honolulu, at 2570 South Beretania Street, nearby the Down to Earth health food store and the Burger King. You can see the Torri Gate when you are nearby too. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing - as well as cash. The great thing about this place is that they open daily and close at around 11pm, so you can get your dessert on before heading home after a nice night on the town. They have a private parking area, but it shares the space with its neighbors. It can fit maybe 5-10 cars at any given time. Best bet is to get here on off peak times to enjoy that benefit of not having to look for parking here. I'm sure it will be well worth the effort. If you are like me, a bunch of bus routes come through the area. Bus routes 1, 1L, 6 come to mind, stopping close enough to Frost City. Routes 3 and 9 stop about a couple of blocks away on Kapiolani Blvd and University Avenue, so there's an option for y'all who take the public transit here on Oahu. For the most part though, having Frost City here is fun and definitely one to sample snow when you want something other than ice cream. The prices here are pretty good, comparable to ice cream parlors and can be a good bang for your money. On this last trip to Frost City, I ended up getting a chocolate shake - as mentioned before, and when it came time to pay for it, one of my friends offered to pay for everyone. I was stoked and happy. It was cool. I said thank you and it was a happy day. Frost City makes me happy and my experience here was good. The service here was good and friendly. You should check this place out. On a hot summer night, frost hits the spot! We brought the fam here after a birthday dinner, and everyone from the teenagers to grammy loved it. Hard to imagine describing shaved ice as soft or fluffy, but it IS. I have no idea how they make this, but it's super light and delicious. And not overly sweet. Hubs had chocolate, Dot picked cookies & cream, Son chose chocolate strawberry, Bro #1 & his hub opted for mint chocolate, Bro #2 and Grammy split the haupia. I was still stuffed from dinner, so I got a honeydew boba. Since I didn't get frost of my own, I felt no guilt whatsoever sampling everyone else's! (I'm sneaky that way.) All of them were delish, but I think my favorites were chocolate strawberry and the haupia. The servings were so generous, the fresh fruit pieces were juicy, and the mochi cubes were deliciously pillowy. FrostCity is pretty tiny, but we managed to get our party of 8 at adjacent tables. Beat the heat with this frosty Taiwanese treat! Frostcity is a family run, authentic Taiwanese style dessert place. They make all of their desserts from scratch and it shows in the freshness and quality. A few days earlier we tried Snow Factory in the McCully Shopping Center. Thankfully, Frostcity is NOTHING like Snow Factory! Where Snow Factory failed (dull, bland, tasteless), Frostcity shines. The ginger flavor has just the right amount of sweetness and bite from fresh ginger. Lychee tastes like a fresh lychee with the right amount of milk. Unfortunately they ran out of the strawberry flavor, which I heard tastes just like GuriGuri in Maui. My Mom had the green tea yesterday and she said it was delicious. Frostcity also makes their own Hong Kong milk tea and other hot desserts (black sesame, walnut, coconut tapioca). We didn't try them yet but saw people taking them to go. The owners are very friendly and eager to please. They even brought us extra toppings because my Dad mentioned that he really liked how they "popped" like a fruit flavored fish egg. i know that sounds gross...but it is actually a good analogy. The toppings are imported from Taiwan and have herbal, plum, and mango flavors. According to our server, the toppings serve as a "palate cleanser" and flavor enhancer for the shaved ice dessert. Frostcity is located in that small building area just before Jiffy Lube around University Ave, and is a Taiwanese style desserts run by a Cantonese family. We heard so much about the little dessert shop that my girlfriend and I had to check it out. Walking in, we noticed the orange colored walls featuring pictures of their infamous snow frost, a cross between shaved ice and ice cream. As we approached the counter, the worker at the cash register asked us if it was our first time and explained their specialty--snow ice made with fresh fruit. Unfortunately, the only downside was that only one flavor could be ordered at a time, and it only came in two sizes ($4.75 small, $6 large). In two total visits, we managed to try the mango frost, lychee frost, and watermelon frost. The snow ice is presented in layers of shaved ice/cream, but the fresh fruit flavor makes it light, refreshing, and airy. We also enjoyed the mochi balls, fresh fruit slices, and other toppings that came with the snow ice. It's a great way to enjoy a guilt-less dessert. read more

My friend, Kim, introduced me to Frost City. I was so amazed with this "frost" or "snow." ~ Depending on what you call it. The service here is really good and the ladies are all so nice. I've tried the strawberry and the toffee frost. Both so delicious! It gets a little difficult to eat, even if you eat from top down because it still ends up toppling over at some point. The flavor is really light, and it's not too filling, which I like. It also makes me feel like I'm being a little healthier than having purely sugar shave ice. LOL! Their tea egg and ume musubis are really delicious as well! The only thing that would keep me from giving 5 stars is that it's a bit pricy. Perhaps that's the price everywhere with this type of dessert but it doesn't seem like it's worth what you pay for the frost. After all, it's just some fruit and water, right? read more

Thanks to fellow yelpers, I was set on trying Frostcity on a recent King Street progressive dine around. After dinner (that included dessert), a second dessert stop was in order at this cute shop conveniently located up the street just past University Ave. Our first impression was not great. Honestly, when we walked in the door we were assailed by a strange odor ... a mix of stink feet and aged fish. Perhaps it was an order of durian but whatever it was we held our breaths until the smell dissipated. Once that passed, we were awestruck by the photographs of the dessert creations on the walls and tables of happily slurping customers. In line, we gazed at the seemingly endless list of snow ice creations. With so many choices, we went for simple ... a small lychee snow ice ($4.75) and a small black currant snow ice ($6.75)... then made our way to a table next to the glass case. Our order came quickly and we had to dive in quickly before it melted. The first slurp of lychee was amazing, dancing across the tongue and then a sweet finish. It was as if tasting air, lychee flavored of course. The black currant was more robust, tart and bold. Both snow ices came with fresh chopped strawberries, some mochi and these delicate golden pearls that fellow yelpers have referred to as "popping bobas." Think of ikura, those salty fish roe, only these are sweet bursts of flavors. I like! Overall, it's a new taste sensation worthy of trying at least a few dozen times or more until you've tried every flavor.
