I read good things about Frostcity and my supervisor wanted to try it out, so I was excited to try a dessert from here. It's a small place across from the new Longs on Beretania. The parking lot is very small, but we went on a week day so finding parking was easy. It was pretty empty inside of Frostcity too, which was a good thing since we took so long to decide what to get! I was surprised by all the flavor options! The cashier was super nice and took the time to explain all the options and which flavors were the most popular. She seemed genuinely kind. After about five minutes of trying to decide what to get, I settled with the green tea flavor and my supervisor had the apple banana. I liked my green tea flavor, it was a bit stronger than the apple banana flavor, which was also good. They use fresh fruit when they make their ice blocks. It was kind of expensive for the small ($4.75) but it was a light and yummy dessert. My supervisor wished he chose the lilikoi flavor instead and seemed underwhelmed, but also wants to go back to try the mango flavor. I enjoyed my first experience at Frostcity not only for the dessert but also for the excellent customer service. Officially our favorite shave ice place in honolulu. The texture is incredible - like eating a pile of snowflakes. It absolutely melts in your mouth but not on the plate like most shave ice. You can savor it far longer. The flavors are more delicate than what you traditionally expect from the syrupy ice in its normal form, but you just have to think of it as a different treat. I'm a shaved ice novice. But I like food and these snowy things are delicious. Not coyly sweet, just full of flavor. The Lychee tasted like the real fruit. There are little treats garnishing the plate, HoneyComb cereal (??? OK), tiny cantaloupe pieces, little orange balls that pop in your mouth filled with sweetness, etc...lots of food blings. The parking is challenging, but this is Waikiki, the real estate is UBER expensive, deal with it. The strip mall is a little scary looking. The seating area inside is very clean. Shaved ice cream?! Wow what a cool concept! There are a variety of flavors, but I went with the green tea flavor which I liked since it wasn't overly sweet. The shaved texture is different (in a good way) and gives the dessert a light and refreshing taste. The small cost $5 and you sure get your bang for your buck since it is literally a mountain of shaved ice cream that comes with fresh fruit, jellies, those liquid-filled bubble things that pop in your mouth (the lychee one tasted amazing!), and mochi. Also, this place caters to all ages and is kid-friendly. They even have games that customers can play as they enjoy their dessert. The frost is frozen and layered. Then along the sides they place popping fruit balls, fresh fruit, mochi and the fruit crystals you find in some bubble drinks. The frost is really refreshing, like a combination of your cravings when you don't know what to eat. I got the small Lychee frost, next time I think I want to try the banana. My sister got the milk tea which she liked a lot. And my cousin got the strawberry which was really like strawberry ice cream. They use real fruit when they make it and it tastes like it too. Having just tried Snow Factory last week and not super enjoying it, I was interested to give this place a try. In return, I was not disappointed at all! The owner was very nice and took the time to explain to us what the shave ice + ice cream concoction was. I forget what this place used to be. It's tucked in the bottom of the 2 story complex below where the vegan bento place was and near where the rattan store-turned nail salon is on King St. next to Burger King. If there's no parking in the tiny lot, I would have just parked at Burger King (kinda like when there's no parking for Bubbies). They are very open about using fresh fruit, which was nice to hear. I don't know how they get some of those fruits out of season. Maybe that's a question to ask next time. Anyhow, unlike Snow Factory - you don't get to pick toppings or sides. The choices here come with free small mounds of mochi, boba-pop-in-your-mouth-deliciousness-ball-things, and fruit (these are chosen for you). There are many different flavors, but beware since many were sold out while we went. I have a feeling they sell out quite a bit. In addition, they are pricey! I got a small lilikoi order, which was amazing/delicious/fantastic in addition to being milk free, but also a bit over $6. So okay, I am cheap, I know. It was worth it to pay $6 for the dessert this time, but I don't think it's a splurge that I can afford all the time. There are more basic flavors like chocolate and mango (small $4.75, large $6). And the "fancy" flavors like mines (large $7.20). They also have combos (of which only 2 were not sold out when we went) drinks, boba tea, and soup desserts. I want to try a soup dessert. It sounds both neat and like something I used to make out of unwanted ice cream when I was a kid. I think they must also own the lucky knot place since there is basically no wall between the two establishments and one of the owners was behind the desk looking at charms when we left. Having driven by here all the time, I am definitely glad I stopped in for a try. The minus star is for both the high prices and because we waited over 15 minutes. There was a couple who ordered small of something before us, so we weren't quite sure why it was taking so long. I guess we were comparing the wait to Snow Factory (which was less than a minute), so maybe that's just the normal wait here. Hint: you can ask for a small jar of the boba-pop-in-your-mouth-deliciousness-ball-things. It cost $1 and probably makes a great snack or would be fantastic on candy sushi. This summer has been exceptionally hot and humid, as we who live in Hawaii know, so it was a nice treat to visit Frostcity after dinner to receive a jolt of cold delights. The finely shaved ice desserts are the stars here, available in many exotic flavors such as durian, longan, lychee, mango, haupia and lilikoi (passion fruit). I enjoyed my lychee "snow" and it was so light that I barely felt it even after a filling dinner. One of our friends had the milk flavor, which was very smooth and reminiscent of Japanese Milky candies. My friend and I finally came here after talking about it for what seems like months. After reading all the Yelp reviews, I was expecting the snow ice to be a bit more creamy with a slightly bolder flavor. Something like guri guri, but a bit more icy? We ordered the watermelon and green tea & azuki. The watermelon... tasted like real watermelon (rind and all lol). It was lightly flavored, maybe a little too light for me, but still fruity and refreshing. The green tea & azuki combination was nice because it allowed us to try two flavors at once. The azuki flavor clearly dominated this one, in a good way! I love green tea, but was a little disappointed with how subtle the green tea taste was. 4 stars for the food but 3 stars for COVID-era sanitation/hygiene stuff. We did not notice any wiping down of the tables when we arrived or when we left (it is easy to spill one's shave ice bits on the table where it melts); nor were we offered hand sanitizer at the entrance or at the ordering window. I had to look around for the standard hand sanitizer but could not see any? They also let people still use their board games with a sign instructing customers to wipe them off, when done, themselves. The tables are decently distanced from each other, but I did not get the feeling there was an effort to keep this small, air conditioned place particularly virus free. In this era, that effort will make a difference with customers. Great Taiwanese style shave ice options, of the same level of quality as before COVID, a little pricey ($8ish for a small sized one), but that is to be expected. Nicely flavored boba teas which were not very cold and a bit expensive given the price (around $5-6 for a smallish cup). We liked that they were open through the afternoon and evening, but since this is a family place with lots of kids coming in and out, you have to do the cleaning part frequently and noticeably. read more

The atmosphere is very laid back and cute; there are quite a variety of board games and card games to play while you enjoy your dessert or snack. The shaved ice-like desserts are light and fluffy; quite refreshing! There is an array of flavors ranging from fruity to chocolate-y. Maybe it's because my opinion is based on previous Snow Ices I've had in California...but I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed with my visit. I can't speak to how their Snow Ice is relative to other spots in Oahu...so it may very well be the best...I've just had better in my lifetime. Flavors are very subtle. The Snow Ice desserts lack the super rich and creamy texture I anticipated. Though still creamier than shaved ice, and not quite ice cream. I enjoyed the sweet potato flavor, taste was comparable to the actual thing. The toppings aren't tailored to any specific flavor profile/s, it's consistent amongst all flavors/flavor combinations...my bf got the Strawberry/Chocolate mix and the fruit toppings did not compliment the chocolate very well. My daughter had strawberry, which was wonderful; it's made with fresh strawberries, so the flavor isn't overly sweet like candy. Her boyfriend had a bubble drink, which he said was very good. We were out looking for Shave Ice at 8pm on a Sunday near U of H Manoa, and found most of the usual suspects closed. This place was open and nearby so we decided to give it a try. This is not shave ice - it is more like they froze a block of ice cream or sorbet then chipped it with a shave ice machine. What you get is flaky, feathery pure ice cream flavor, not syrup over ice. Everyone thought it was great and better than shave ice in some ways. The flavors are more like ice cream flavors - eg green tea, cookies and cream, mango. The black currant and the coconut-pineapple-Thai basil were outstanding. This place won't replace shave ice, but will be a great option to supplement it. The only downside is that they can't make the ice ahead of time like shave ice, so it's a bit slow to get, but well worth the wait. read more

I went there for the first time about 2 weeks ago. I was super excited since this would be the first time I had snow ice since I was in China 5 years ago. Don't be confused if you walk in and am greeted with a waft of curry, you're in the right place, they just happen to also sell some savory stuff here. If you're in an electric wheelchair with smaller wheels, you might not be able to get through the door at all because there's one of those weird little steep "ramp" thing connecting the ground to the door (you know what I'm talking about if you're in a wheelchair). A bigger scooter would be hard to navigate in there too, but you should be able to drive forward to the counter fine. You walk to the counter first, place your order, then sit yourself down at one of the many tables and wait for them to deliver your order. It wasn't busy when I went there and it only took around 5 minutes for everything to arrive. I noticed they sell some Asian snacks at the counter too, including the yummy sticks they put on your snow ice pile. There were also some tabletop games you can pick out and play with your friends, which I thought was adorable! I ordered the Mud Pie (chocolate and coffee mixed together with Oreo crumbs) which was delicious! The melt-in-your-mouth feathery texture was already perfect, but the flavor made it even better. It wasn't too strong or too sweet. It was the perfect level of chocolate and coffee goodness that kept me wanting more. It tasted sort of like Serendipity's Frozen Hot Chocolate with coffee added. My sister ordered the Chocolate Haupia (half chocolate half coconut). Both flavors tasted like slightly watered down frozen hot chocolate and coconut milk to me, but that's probably because the Mud Pie had a stronger flavor, but it still tasted really good. My sister and our mom really enjoyed it. All snow ice are supposedly made with all natural flavorings here. Each snow ice order comes with a white chocolate/chocolate cream filled stick, mochi cubes, watermelon cubes, and a variety of fruit jelly and fruit "caviar" (they pop in your mouth) on the side (I really like that it's on the side, so you can pick and choose what you want to eat) that adds different textures to the snow ice and helps refresh your palate so it's not numb to the flavor from the cold. We also ordered a taro bubble drink with the 50% off one drink with snow ice order coupon we received from checking in. It was good, nothing particularly special, but to my delight the tapioca pearls were a lot softer than most places as if they're properly hydrated. There are a lot more flavors I want to try and they change flavors every once in awhile so I'm definitively coming back for more! What a nice change from regular shave ice! It's a relief to be able to sit inside an air-conditioned room and eat a not cloyingly sugary dessert that is refreshing and lighter than ice cream/gelato or something baked. On the day we visited, they featured some specials of unusual flavors such as a watermelon & lychee combo along with unconventional for Hawaii black currant and the notorious durian. This is also the place to get your black sesame superfreak fix on, whether it be black sesame mochi balls in a sweet ginger soup (hot), black sesame soup (hot), or as a flavor of snow ice (sold out) ! The mochi balls rocked, and even my Taiwanese mom was impressed since Frostcity got them just right. I didn't care for Taiwanese ice cream after trying Snow Factory in Pearl City. We decided to give it one more try at a different location. BOY am I glad we did. Frost City is excellent! The flavors didn't taste like the fake stuff you get at most places, the strawberry and mango tasted like FRESH fruit. I also appreciated the little mango and lychee boba, fresh apple pieces, and wafer they added as side toppings. We tried their honeydew with lychee boba and that was another good find! Atmosphere was nice and relaxing. Great place for a first date! There are lots of fun games that were nicely laminated and cut. That's a great idea to keep the cards clean from all the ice cream around. Overall we had a great experience here and we will be back for more.
