Cruising I-75, trying to curb my daughter's insatiable coffee appetite, my son made the mistake of asking if she'd ever been to Frothy Monkey. Situated in the iconic Chattanooga Choo-Choo terminal ("woo woo, Track 29, Boy you can gimme a shine...") we tempted fate with short-term park-by-plate in the Choo-Choo lot. For longer visits you could likely park and walk on weekends as well for f-ree. Sunday brunch is a decent wait, but for all us to-go folks it's shorter, with just enough time to check out the meaning of all those trendy-named drinks. I went with "drip" since I'm boring, but it was smooth and didn't knock me on my tail like probably the pour-over would have. The kids were having none of that though, and they needed something frothy! So they went Turtle Latte all the way and it was, indeed, frothy. On a more adventurous day I'd likely try Monkey Mocha or after-hours the Bourbon Butterscotch (froth responsibly). Beyond Java, the breakfast menu will satisfy from traditional Farm Breakfast or Bob (pancakes, 2 sides) to the Architect Omelet or Quinoa Bowl for you farm-to-table bearded hipsters. This is by far the worst brunch experience I have ever had. They forgot to bring our coffee order then it took another 15 minutes to make it. The chai was atrocious, it tasted how I imagine dirty mop water tasting. This is odd but the water smelt like fish...I don't understand how plain drinking waster can smell or taste so bad. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy and said it was the driest hardest biscuit he ever had...even drier than his DM's The "California" sourdough was insanely dry and chewy, hard to bite into and had no avocado wedge on it even though it was supposed to have it. Trash experience. Waitstaff looked chaotic and confused. Hopefully, this is a newer business that just needs retraining because this place has potential but the service and food was subpar. The Andouille Sausage and Hash with sage cheese was so so good. Purple potatoes, diced cooked onions, cheese infused with sage, deliciously locally sourced sausage. It wasn't too spicy but has a nice kick. The seasoning was great. Everything about it was delicious. I added an Irish coffee to my breakfast and let me just say, it was nice, warm, and strong. A friend of mine suggested that I check this place out when visiting Chattanooga, and so when on our spring break, that's just what me and the kid did. Looking at the website, all of their drinks sounded amazing. I really wanted to try their seasonal drink, "Blume", but our waitress said that it's only served as an iced drink. Boo! But OK. No worries! I kept looking, and found that the Golden Monkey Latte (signature drink) was more in line of what I needed. It did not dissapoint. There weren't a lot of vegan or vegetarian options, so I ordered the vegan bowl. What a wonderful plate of healthy. My son (age 9) went straight for the kids menu and enjoyed a plate of French toast with a classic PBJ on the side. I know! But , he's growing, so.... Now, keep in mind, the wait time can be a bit long during they're busy time, but it's so worth it. Everything was so fresh and delicious. Beautiful space, but disappointing service. We stopped in for a coffee on the drive home and while the Cafe is beautiful they were out of ingredients for several drinks and the order took a long time to come out. I tried to order 2 different drinks that they were out of ingredients for and the cashier ended up showing me that they were not able to make 5 or 6 drinks. I settled for a flat white, but then it took 15 minutes for our order to come out. I know it's not Starbucks, but if drinks are backed up at least give us a heads up that it might be a while. Just visiting the city & saw this place come up highly rated, so we decided to drop by for breakfast on a Friday morning. It wasn't too busy, which was nice. It was giving very hipster. And also seems like a nice wide and open space to get some work done. We were seated quickly and also received our lattes quickly - they were delishhh. Highly recommended the Monkey Mocha - it's not too sweet and if you love the banana/choco combo it's perfect. The Havana latte made me also wanna cuddle up next to a fireplace even though it was on the verge of summertime. Farmers breakfast was eh. Gouda grits were nice and fluffy, but wish the bacon was softer - it tasted like it was made in advance and just warmed up. Same w the bacon egg and cheese bagel - the bagel itself was a bit harder than preferred. But their house hot sauce made both these dishes better. Due to social distancing they're spacing out tables which creates less seating. I called ahead for a reservation but others waited about 15 minutes to be seated. I sat outside and ordered coffee, mimosa carafe($25), and a lox and everything bagel with cream cheese. The carafe was large and mimosas were good. The bagel hit the spot but the sprout were overwhelming. I also purchased their coffee and a mug. They have a walk up stand for to go orders as well. The Frothy Monkey is inside an older building and is actually an amazing setup. I enjoyed the play list that was both whimsical and soothing. The architecture is a must see. They did offer contactless pay, which is a plus. So now on to the seasonal cake. The cake was extremely dry. The cake was cold, not room temperature and could have passed as the crumbles you put on crumb cake. Maybe we caught them at a bad time but I definitely would not go back for this cake. I came back for the coffee each morning. When we sat for breakfast, I ordered the Julie, which is an everything Bagel sandwich, farm eggs, feta, basil, tomato. I thought it came with cream cheese as well, but it doesn't. Otherwise, it was a deliciously toasted breakfast sandwich. My husband ordered their corned beef + hash. With a fried farm egg (Egg Shack / Herndon, KY) over medium, pickled onions, spicy Hoff sauce (Chattanooga, TN) aioli. The potatoes were perfectly crispy, seasoned and soft on the inside. The pickled onions were the perfect touch of salty. They egg medium broke and the yolk covered the bowl. Delicious. If you've never had their Havana Latte, do it. It's steamed milk, espresso, house-made condensed milk + vanilla + star anise + cinnamon sauce. It's just lightly sweetened and has the perfect foam on top. read more

Frothy Monkey is located in the Chattanooga Choo Choo train station, giving it a super cool, industrial feel with ultra-high ceilings and exposed brick walls. If you appreciate architecture and/or history, this is a great spot to check out. They have plenty of seating to choose from, both downstairs and in the upstairs loft. My brother and I got coffee and mimosas late in the afternoon and worked for a couple hours. Great place to work and we also appreciated the early 2000's music selection! We'll have to come back and try their food menu. Sounds weird, but make sure to stop by the bathrooms across the lobby - they're so pretty! read more

I still favor their breakfast menu over lunch and dinner, but that is simply due to my love for all things breakfast. You will not be let down by any sandwich or entree and definitely not by the desserts. My latest visit was on a brisk winter morning; perfect for visiting FM (that and a rainy day). An Americano in one hand, loaded biscuits and chorizo gravy in the other I made my way to the outdoor seating in the back of the station (where the train cars are). The Americano, per usual, was a masterpiece of roasting and water-to-espresso balance. Its vigorous flavor notes were an exact match for the fluffy biscuit, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and sunny side up eggs that blessed my nostrils and taste buds. I can say without reservation that I would be there at least once a week if I lived in the area. If you find yourself near, plan to stop by. And remember, they have a full bar as well. read more

While the coffee was great and the atmosphere at this location is truly lovely, I was unfortunately disappointed by the food. They were out of the pasta I originally wanted, so I ordered the Farmer's Breakfast with over-medium eggs and bacon. I prefer crispy bacon, but what I received was extremely overcooked, and my eggs came out over-easy instead. I let my server know, and they kindly offered to fix it--but when the eggs came back 5-10 minutes later, they were over-hard, with one yolk already broken. I'm not someone who usually sends food back or leaves negative reviews, but I left feeling pretty let down by the meal. I wish more care had been taken the second time around--or that some sort of accommodation had been offered. And enough of a rip off to keep me from giving them anymore of my cash My wife had a chai tea and said the chai is a powder based product and it was floating in her cup in chunks. My kids and I came here for breakfast on our last day trip in Chattanooga. We had a lot planned for the day so we just ordered some coffee and bagels with cream cheese to go. The coffee was DELICIOUS and came out right away (you're ordering to-go directly from the coffee bar). The bagels were also delicious! The only downside was that it took 45min for us to get the bagels which was super disappointing for our idea of ordering quick and easy breakfast and to-go service to keep on track of plans. Once we did get them, we thought they were delicious. We were just a little hangry by that point. We entered the restaurant through the hotel lobby/"train station", which was the only option on a rainy Sunday morning. Checked in around 9:40. Twenty minute wait for a table, which wasn't too bad, even though the restaurant appeared to be no more than half full. Borderline five-star experience, with a couple minor exceptions. First, our server was so soft spoken that we could barely hear her. (Either that or just extremely shy with zero personality). We were able to communicate well enough to get coffee and put an order in. An order that took a full 30 minutes to get to us. The food, once it arrived, was awesome. I had the monkey cristo. My friends had the biscuits with chorizo gravy and the farm breakfast, with bacon. All were five-star worthy. I understand the difficult situation facing restaurants today, but it is a pity that staffing is holding this one back from their full potential. read more
