I said hmm I grew up with Canada Dry, so the owner was nice and he did a fun little experiment l. I did a blind taste test of Canada Dry verses Vernon's! And YUP!!! Quite the generous size for the 8 slice, though I thought they'd be a little more generous with the toppings when ordering a double pepperoni -- this was a little shy (see pic) I'd give this a solid 4.5 stars. Crust is crispy, nice caramel cheese lace climbing the sides, spongey and doughy crust base to it. Tomato sauce had an earthy herby flavor, but still worked. This was ordered through UberEats and definitely arrived room temperature and needed some time in the oven after arrival. Solid spot for Detroit pizza, I'd happily get it again. read more

I recently discovered Detroit style pizza and now I am on a quest to try as many Detroit style pizza places as possible. I was in the Pasadena area and found Fuji & Vi's on Yelp. I ordered an 8 square pepperoni pizza to go. This is only the 3rd Detroit style pizza I have tried, so I don't have much to compare it too, but I'd say it's pretty darn good. It's very cheesy and I love how the edges are so crusty. The dough is a softer consistency rather than the foccacia like consistency I've had from the other 2 Detroit style pizzeria I've tried. I wish they'd put more pepperoni on the pizza though. Prices were reasonable. It was $20.50 plus tax for the 8 square pepperoni pizza. I'd definitely return here to try their other flavors, such as the bbq chicken pizza. The restaurant is tiny and is on a 2nd floor of an outdoor shopping plaza. We called and ordered a 1/2 classic and 1/2 Biggio in the 8 square to go. They said 25 mins. Was ready when we came to pick up. Nice and hot until we got home. It's On the 2nd floor. You could eat there but looked like most people were picking up. I think there's a parking lot at the back. This pizza was delicious!! The crust was the Right blend of doughy and crispy. If you haven't had Detroit-style pizza, it's basically a rectangular pan pizza with a thick crust. Ordered the following: - Cheese 4 slice pizza with pepperoni, sausage and mushroom - 7.5/10: very good and filling. Loaded with pizza sauce (maybe more than the cheese). Crust is thick as expected. If you're looking for very good authentic Detroit-style pizza, you've come to the right place. Fuji & Vi's is run by a lovely couple, and the restaurant is named after the owners' grandmothers. It's on the second floor of a plaza in Pasadena, on the other side of the street from CAR artisan chocolate (for you croissant connoisseurs), so it may be a little harder to find but they have a parking lot in the back of the building with an ample amount of spots. We ordered The Classic 4-square pizza at the front and waited about 15-20 minutes for the pizza to come out. Most people who came by got their pizza to-go that night and some ordered on the phone beforehand. They have a few tables and chairs inside for dine-in. It came out piping hot, and they gave us three shaker bottles of grated parmesan, oregano, and red chili flakes to pair with the pizza. The edges were nice and crispy from the cheese, and the middle was soft and chewy. The toppings were flavorful but well-balanced and not overly salty--a great classic pepperoni Detroit-style pizza in my book. I had a very bad experience at a chain pizza place last night while stuck at work. I was in the Pasadena area today and thought I might make up for my bad experience from the previous night. I found this spot on Yelp and thought I'd give it a try. I'm a huge fan of Detroit style pizza. This pizza place is not your average pizza place. It does not feel like a pizza spot at all. I don't really know how to describe it but it just feels like a different kind of restaurant. Not a bad thing but different. They serve a very legit Detroit style pizza here. It's not the best I've ever had but it's very good. I really enjoyed the sauce and if I'm not mistaken I heard a mixer going in the back room. I'm assuming they make their own dough. This is my favorite pizza place, my favorite mom & pop and my de facto choice for when we can't decide what to eat. They roll their pizzas fresh off the motor city factory line. Meats are hidden under the cheese. The Greek salad convinces my carnivorous Mediterranean food hating partner to eat a vegetable. The pro tip is to get it well done so the Parmesan covered crust gets a blackened Damascus steel crisp making you wish you weren't in LA and refind your long forsaken love for carbs. A little bit late to write this review but oh my gosh, Fuji & Vi's is so good. I have never had Detroit Style pizza before but I can saw now that I'm a fan. My friend and I picked up a couple of pizzas to try and decided on The Classic and Contradiction. Both were so good and very filling. We shared two 8 square pizzas between three people and maybe only ended up eating half total. The pizzas were loaded with lots of toppings but nicely balanced with the sauce and dough. This location can be found on the top level, parking is also available on the second level, and it's definitely a hidden gem. It's a small place with maybe 6 tables but it seems like most customers order and take it home. The lady who helped us out was so friendly and answered our questions since it was our first time here. This is where I go to for a special treat. I love their pizzas and can tell they take great pride in their craft and have worked very hard to perfect their product. Come in early because sometimes they do sell out, but that's because of all the hard work they have to put in to make such great food. I had a chance to talk to Michael today and I told him that his place reminded me of these small restaurants we just went to in Japan. In my opinion, this is the best pizza in Pasadena right now. I don't know much about how to describe food, but this pizza is incredibly flavorful, and the crust is absolutely mouthwatering. When you bite into a slice, you can taste each level of ingredient all the way through to the bottom of the crust; each new flavor enhancing the previous one. (My) Weighted Pizza Breakdown 8.0 Crust/Dough - 2/10 very bad (still worse than Pizza Hut) 0.5 Frico - 8/10 good 0.5 Cheese Blend/Sauce - 6/10 ok 0.5 Toppings - 8/10 good 0.5 Value - 10/10 great (it's cheap) Final Score: 5.9 / 10 I would stick to 4 squares if possible, even if that means getting two of the same pizza. I would skip "The Classic" as well as the "Margherita", the two I ordered last time. I stand by my original review: these taste like a bread sticks. The problem is that these particular pizzas are light on toppings and cheese, they let the dough "shine". But to be frank, there is nothing to let shine, the dough really sucks, to be blunt. The "Biggio" and "Spicy Italian" were much better. I still think pivoting to boutique LA style slow rise Detroit Pizza is a good move. There didn't seem to be many customers whenever I went. So finding a reason to raise your prices could be an opportunity. If they did traditional leavened Detroit-style pizza with a thick, airy crumb and all the glorious extra flavor that sourdough brings, I think it would be a game changer for the 626 area. I think I was so upset in my previous review because it was such a departure from the Detroit style pizzas I have come to know in the LA area. My expectations were high and it was my cheat day. We looooove Fuji and Vi's! Their Detroit style pan pizzas are aaaamazing! Full of flavor, ingredients are generous, and their crust has that perfect crunch on the sides and that bready chew! We have only done take out from this place and the pizzas do travel well, but they have a few tables inside that you can enjoy their pizzas right from the kitchen! Place is clean and simple and service is warm and welcoming. We have tried the Margherita, Biggio and the Double Pepperoni and excited to try out the other flavors. Simple goodness over here!
