Hopping night at Fuji Yama! Sat in the sushi area but the hibachi tables were a happening place for birthday celebrations. The hot tea is delicious. The teriyaki chicken bento box is huge great variety so much great food (teriyaki chicken, pot sticker, spring roll, rice, tempura shrimp/veges, miso soup and a California roll). We had a nice time sitting on the patio here. I was told there was a long wait to sit inside but the patio we had plenty of flowers and trees and did not feel like a parking lot. Our server was very nice and prompt. We ordered a few cocktails and they were all strong and our server was really nice about letting us customize them. I really like how wide the variety was on the menu. Ramen, udon, and other soups, many appetizers including spring/egg rolls and dumplings, tons of sushi (& sushi burritos!) Thai, japanese, hibachi, etc. I wish there were more descriptions because it can get a little confusing but the extensive options weredefinitely appreciated. we ordered the egg drop soup and spring rolls to start. Both tiny but priced accordingly ($2-3) and tasted good. I got the Maria Roll, that had spicy Kani (imitation crab meat) with avocado, fresh salmon on top, and came with wasabi and spicy mayo. It was surprisingly bland but a good portion size and $14. There was a very pretty flower that was a nice touch and made me smile :) My friend got a veggie udon dish that was also a good portion size but she did not finish it because of the flavor. I would say the only disappointment was that both of our entrees were bland. This is a safe place to take a group because of all the options. We love coming the Grand Rapids and stopping by our favorite sushi bar for lunch. The environment is always hopping with people and the sushi chefs are always busy preparing some really fresh stuff to sink our teeth into. The waitstaff for the most part doesn't speak much English but they are very attentive to your needs. My water is never empty and they are always smiling. If you want a hibachi, there are several to entertain you and there is a glass partition between the sushi bar and the hibachi room so you can watch the shows even if you aren't in there. The bathrooms are clean and the outside also looks nice. Lunch all you can eat.... Not a buffet.... Is really good as far as selection and is only $15.99. Dinner is $26.99 but is awesome as well. Kids prices are a little cheaper and well worth what they get; even ice cream. One thing to mention is to make sure you eat everything that you order because they don't want anything wasted. If you have a bunch left, they will charge you for each piece. I don't find this as a problem at all and it only keeps people from having that "open bar" mentality. read more

Had 3 of us they said they wouldn't seat us for hibachi until 7 we got there at 6 so no big deal then she said only if the group of 7 at 7 shows up will you be able to be seated also not a big deal Friday night and understand. Well the other party arrived early we weren't actually seated until 7:30 once seated all 10 of us sat for 45 min before a sever even acknowledged us and thay was only because the party of 7 was getting up to leave so she ran over and said no one told her there was a hibachi table. Like um excuse me you see how busy this place is it's booked so they sat back down and we did too and then after she took all of our orders at once she didn't come back again for another 45 min to give us waters.... finally arou d 9 we got salads and drinks. Salad was ok soup was terrible. Lemongrass marg was all sugar and very bad the chef came out with not enough veggies or noodles so everyone got shorted on that and the food was ok at best except the egg rolls those are from gordons and are absolutely terrible. We were offered kothing but a large bill and crap service and terrible to mediocre food at best. Have been going to different places in town for years and now I k ow why. Terrible waste of money! We took our son to Fuji Yama for his 40th birthday because of experiences we've had at other Japanese steakhouses. We had 6 in our party, 5 adults and 1 four year old. There was another party of 5 whom they were pairing with us (but didn't tell either party). They wouldn't seat either group until all members in BOTH parties were present...so 10 people spent an extra 1/2 hour waiting for one late arrival before we were seated. When we were seated is when it got really bad. They had stacked all eleven seats at one station that appeared to comfortably seat eight! They had strangers sitting 'cheek to cheek! (In this day of social distancing?). The room was small with 8 stations and at least eighty customers which made it extremely noisy and smokey from all the cooking. My son and I had to sit on the backside of the cook which defeats the purpose but we just could be cramped in like that. We notified the waitress and then the cook that it was my son's birthday. When the cook started he said one "happy birthday" and gave, just my son, one shot of sake. After that no more ceremony and not another word from our cook. Meanwhile, the cook at the other station at our table was constantly entertaining and yelling happy birthday to the birthday guy at that table...oh and hitting him with sake shots multiple times! We felt like second class customers. We kept waiting for our cook to wake up and acknowledge our birthday boy. Worst of all the food that was prepared was terrible. Everything was seasoned the same and tastes very salty! No one could finish their meal in our group. When the bill came there was a $31 tip added. When I informed the waitress (who was nice and did good) of the poor performance by the cook she said she'd talk to the manager but the tip was automatically added for parties of 6 or more (I hadn't mentioned the tip). When she returned she told me he'll be spoken to but she thinks he has a problem with the language (what the...?). Also it felt like they counted my 4 yr old as the sixth party to qualify the auto tip. I am angry with myself for not having them remove the auto tip and tipping my waitresses personally, for not pointing out the bad/salty food, for not asking to be seated in the regular dining room, and for not addressing these things with the manager directly. Although we got along well with the other party, (one member left because she felt too crowded), was the worst dining experience I can recall ever having and a complete waste of $214! read more

We came here with an unruly group. 3 boys under 5 and 4 adults. We all decided that hibachi would be a way we could entertain our kids so maybe we could talk. It ended up being a great idea!!!!!! My only complaint is that it took forever for the server to take out orders and drink orders. Other than that small hiccup everything went off without a hitch. Rudy was our server and he was so great with the boys. He was even engaging in talking with my two year old. The whole way home and today my son was talking about his friend with the red hat named Rudy. Thank you Rudy! We had the filet and shrimp and the shrimp was cooked to perfection. Really love this place. My favorite sushi in town. They're sizzling rice soup is almost identical in flavor and rice sizzlin' to what I remember eating as a child. I had their Hidden Dragon roll. On Saturday, December 9, my wife and I went to Fuji Yama on East Beltline for a hibachi dinner. We have eaten in quite a few other Japanese restaurants in Toledo, Ann Arbor, Detroit, Toronto, and another one in Grand Rapids, so we were very much looking forward to it. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. We started with a huge serving of fried rice, which tasted burned. That was followed by a large serving of noodles. In our experience we had always been served bean sprouts, not noodles; are the noodles cheaper? I had ordered filet mignon and scallops and my wife ordered scallops. Both our orders were coated heavily with what appeared to be a sticky, flavored sauce of some kind which made it Impossible to enjoy the flavor of the steak (mine had a piece of fat in it) and especially the delicate flavor of the scallops. In fact, the coating on the scallops was burned black and was crusty. The service was good; the environment was very noisy: our grill was only a very few feet from another group. We would have enjoyed a cheeseburger at a local pub a lot more. read more

Fuji is one of the best restaurants for quality hibachi food. Their chefs are funny, talented, and cook delicious foods. I highly recommend the filet and chicken hibachi. With the hibachi dinner, you get rice AND noodles, along with veggies, soup and salad. The portions are large, with more than enough food so it's worth it. I still very much recommend Fuji to others however a few things I've run into over my last few visits: If you order hibachi to go, it's $4 extra for the noodles that come complementary with the dine-in hibachi. Why? Also, the last time I was there the chef forgot our filet mignon, and after he was done cooking they eventually brought them out... kind of a big deal. Not so impressed anymore. I wanted something warm and had my eye on a hibachi dinner, but when I saw you get exactly 2 shrimp, I took a pass. Sorry, that's not a dinner portion. I got the kung pao chicken instead, and it tasted kinda weird (in a this-isn't-kung-pao way) and salty. The quantities were huge, so I added some minced ginger to the remainder at home, which greatly improved the flavor. My husband had the General Tso chicken, which he said was too sweet - also weird since he's fairly immune to sweetness in food. Service was attentive and food came out quickly. For lunch, ordered their lunch special of a sushi and sashimi combination. What's Hot - Amount. All our rolls had lots of pieces. Minimum of 8 pieces per roll. Not bad. There's enough soy sauce at each table and every plate of sushi/rolls/sashimi comes with a good lump of wasabi and ginger. - Price. To be fair, I'm comparing the price to other parts of the country, but hey, I'm well traveled dudes. For a dinner for 3 people and the multiple rolls and sashimi we ordered, the total came out to around $100. Some may consider that pricey, but you have to factor in the ingredients. - Quality. No issues. The avocados were not spoiled. The fish and other seafood were not spoiled. You couldn't smell any issues, which is always a good sign. - Clean. Restaurants should always be clean, but even more so when you're serving raw seafood. This place is clean. What's Not - Service. For dinner, the night we came was not busy. It was a reasonable crowd. Yet our sushi rolls took quite a while to come out. Towards the end of dinner, we each ordered our own orders of sashimi, which is 2 pieces per order. It took quite a while and there was no explanation. For the weekday lunch, we specifically explained to the hostess that we were on a time crunch, which we were. We explained that our service had to be prompt. As a result, it was. However, it should not have to go there in order to get prompt service. Recommendation Hibachi is cool, but I consider it more of a spectator sport. :P If you want to know the true quality of a sushi restaurant, try the sushi. This place has good quality sushi. It passes my litmus test. Final Answer Would definitely come back again. I don't like guessing as to their service, though. read more

Spur of the moment decision to stop in & try this place. I was relatively surprised, the atmosphere was laid back but still felt intimate. You could here people laughing & just enjoying their time while eating. The food was good, lots of menu options from sushi to Thai to basic Chinese. She took 4 of my group's drink orders and when it got to me, I asked about adult beverages. She took off to grab a drink menu, and took an additional 5 minutes to grab it. When she returned with the drink menu, she once again took off. We waited another 10 minutes for her to return and finish our drink order, before we decided to take our chances somewhere else. So after giving Fuji Yama a break, subsequent to a number of bad experiences my wife and I tried them again today. Service was just ok the failure came when they served out meal... we ordered brown rice with our meal. The rice came and was old, cold and not brown rice. They tried to pass off white rice with some sort of additive to change the color. Inside was clumps of white rice! We sent it back and our server took it back with a quick apology. That was the last we saw of any rice. After stopping our server and asking about the status she said her manager was making some fresh rice. We finished our meal with no rice and when we asked for a box to take our rice with us we were told that there was no way it would be done in time. The manager was busy making new brewing rice. Not a word of apology nor attempt to make it right just the bill. We would have been fine to be told that the rice was not ready but to be served colored old white rice is unacceptable. This is an Asian restaurant no rice!!!! We won't be back. It felt that they were not truthful, not remorseful and just not caring. We won't be back. Pretty good sushi, decent hibachi, reasonable prices but so-so service. To sum it up: you get what you pay for. Fuji Yama has an all you can eat lunch and dinner special. The lunch special is $15.99 and since I typically eat like a Mako shark, I make out like a bandit. The special also includes apps, soups/salads and desserts. Be warned: you cannot share the AYCE special. They've also added the stipulation that you have to eat all the rice that comes with the sushi. I'm afraid they added that bit a few years back due to a meal where a guy in my practice ordered numerous pieces of nigiri and just ate the fish while leaving the rice (he preferred sashimi but that option doesn't exist on the menu.) Sorry about that, but it's now the law 'round these parts. I find the sushi to be of better than average quality. The hibachi show is typical and the food is of average quality, but that isn't bad, since the average hibachi is still decent. The apps, sides and desserts are mediocre. The service has improved from years past - it used to be unfriendly, inattentive and slow. Now it's just slow, but usually with a smile :) When I'm really hungry for sushi rolls or nigiri and don't want to break the bank, this is where I go. read more

To be fair, they only had two chefs who were running frantically from table to table which didn't really contribute to the dining experience either. Take out for the win! Times are tough right now and some solid comfort food was the needed solution, this really delivered.
