I love Maru. It's my fav place to get sushi in town and I always like dining here for special occasions. I usually get a free truffle for my bday too! :-) The service is pretty constant and so is the food. For Michigan, I'd say the fish is fresh. My fav roll is the rainbow roll. If you don't like fish, I recommend the udon noodles... the have an excellent bite to them. The space inside is a bit chaotic because there's so many tables. But I think a full restaurant is a sign of a vibrant community. Parking is hit or miss in this part of east town, so just plan for that. Now that's it's almost patio season, I would recommend a seat outside if you dine in. Overall a 5/5! read more

Maru is a sushi lovers delight - everything is reliably good. Loved the seasonal special kimchi arancini!! The yellowtail crudo is a go to for me when I see it on the menu and this dish held up. My husband and I went here on a Monday evening and it was lovely! My husband got a specialty roll and I got Salmon nigiri and gyoza. The sushi was good quality and flavorful. They also had some speciality lemonades and I tried the Mango flavor. It was delicious! Our waitress was kind and answered all our questions. Went here with my son and his girlfriend for dinner this week. Love the Cherry Street vibe. The restaurant was very clean, the service was excellent and the food was great. We had the crab Rangoon dip, edamame, cocktails, sushi rolls (can't recall which ones, sorry!), udon and hibachi shrimp. Everyone loved every course. Parking was a little confusing but that was my fault, not knowing the Cherry street area well enough. Ultimately found a parking lot that has a sign for parking for dining. A star was knocked off (seriously not a big deal) because the crab rangoon dip needs more deep fried chips with how much dip you get. Came to Maru on a Wednesday night for their $4 wine night deal. It was busier than I expected for a Wednesday night, but we were seated right away. Got a couple of glasses of their house wine and split sushi with a friend. The rolls are a bit expensive in general, especially compared to other spots around town, but they are delish and have some super creative flavors. We got the cosmo and spicy tuna, both wonderful. Maru also has a great outdoor space to take advantage of as weather in Michigan gets nicer. For a spot to get some high quality rolls we will likely be back. Came back many years later to try it again for our anniversary- knowing this is a more expensive sushi place that for us is more of a special occasion place than others. We took advantage of their "Maru Monday" promotion- repost their Facebook post to enjoy 2 signature rolls for $30 (a savings of around $10 at least it seems). The rolls we got were great- well made, interesting combinations (one had kimchi in it!) And not too big you could hardly eat it. We enjoyed the chocolate truffle dessert- it was small but rich and perfect for a post meal sweet treat. I also appreciated that they had a mocktail menu that was more than 2 things and seemed thoughtfully chosen- i had the strawberry basil drink and it was refreshing. Over the holidays, Maru ran a gift card deal so I ended up buying one. Nate and I stopped in for dinner recently and had a good experience. We ordered the crabby mushrooms, which I've heard rave reviews of for years, one of the feature rolls (K-pop), the crunchy crab roll, and the Cosmo roll. Our server was super friendly and bubbly. We were seated on the patio, which is enclosed and heated in the winter. It was actually very toasty and cozy out there, which was nice. The crabby mushrooms were good, but not mind-blowing. They were sort of lacking in flavor for me, but the crunch of the fried exterior was nice. Our rolls were great - I really liked the crunchy crab roll with the inari strips on top. We also both enjoyed the K-pop roll with the kimchi. Maru is a nice spot for date night, but I have found in the past that a lot of their rolls taste similar due to the use of many of the same ingredients. The sushi is good quality and I usually stick to their rolls since I find their sashimi to be super expensive. I don't mind stopping by Maru once in a while but prefer some other sushi spots a bit more. read more

We ate there last week for lunch. My wife is hard of hearing and I requested a quiet table. The host really listened and that has been our experience many times is they try hard to accommodate this request. That's one of the reason we return. The other is the service. Sophia was just great. Knowledgeable, personable and communicative. Everything you'd want in a server. Hope they keep her. The food was as lovely as we've come to expect. The Cosmo Salmon is always amazing. The dessert was spectacular. The ambiance is pretty standard. The service is always fantastic and hardworking. Maru consistently oscillates between my favorite and least favorite sushi restaurant in GR. On good days, it's got the best and most innovative sushi in town. Sure, it's not super "authentic" per say, but the flavor combinations are sure to deliver in delicious and unexpected ways. The setting is very cute and upscale, and the servers are usually quite charming (she gave us a free desert since we were celebrating!). On it's bad days however, Maru is a nightmare. I attended last night with my mother and girlfriend and we waited OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF for our food to arrive. Thank the lord we ordered appetizers, because if not, I might've jumped behind the sushi counter and whipped up a California roll just to stave off starvation. This is almost certainly a result of the current state of the restaurant industry and understaffing, so I don't necessarily fault the chefs or servers for this issue, but it was a glaring inconvenience nonetheless. Additionally, it feels a tad overpriced. Like, come on. You're gonna charge me $10 for a few ounces of steamed and salted edamame? I can get a pound of this stuff for three bucks at Meijer. Or like, $20 bucks for a few pieces of sashimi? Unless that fish was caught day-of and blessed by Buddha, there is no world where those prices should be considered reasonable. If you're not strapped for time or cash, you're sure to love Maru. But if you want a great sushi experience at a great price, there are other options in town. read more

Cost wise, their sushi is like $2-3 more than average. Does it worth the extra cost because it is picture worthy, it is up to you. I don't think so. Normally I'll get maru for takeout, as they have some of my favorite specialty rolls and it's consistent quality between the various locations. However, I would not recommend dining in. Usually lunch service is a little quicker at most restaurants I would say. We stopped in today at around 2:20pm and didn't leave until 4pm... It took 20+ minutes from sitting down to get 1 drink, and to get our appetizer order in. Mind you, the restaurant was not busy by any standard. Then from receiving the app we ordered 2 sushi rolls and the teriyaki chicken hibachi, and it took 40+ minutes to receive the sushi & entree. Then our server was MIA when we wanted to get some to-go containers and the bill. Honestly a pretty disappointing experience for a $100 bill at the end of it. If you're going to charge $$$, the service experience needs to match. Maru needs to lower their prices and hire more staff because for the money & the time spent there, the service is definitely not up to par. I'll stick to takeout, but will probably be trying other spots instead. read more
