Ordered food to go for the family because we came back to our place pretty late after a beach day. We didn't feel like dining in so we ordered to go. I personally had the panko crusted garlic shrimp, it was a bit salty and overpowering. Price was on the high side for the quality. My daughter had the yakisoba and surprisingly, it was tasty. A very special restaurant in Kailua-Kona set back from the busy Ali Drive ion remembrance of Fumiko Teshima, daughter of the famed Teshima Restaurant in Honalo. Food is great. I had appetizers for dinner. Grilled miso eggplant was full of flavor and grilled to perfection. Clams cooked in a shiso enhanced miso broth was unique. I could taste garlic, butter, white wine along w a hint of shiso. The broth was so good I wish I could take it home (others have) but I have a flight to catch. Others at my table had beef sukiyaki, chicken sukiyaki, teriyaki beef and shrimp tempura. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. One commented that her miso soup was the best she ever tasted. My boyfriend and I went here when we were in Hawaii a couple weeks ago. The food was average and the service pretty poor. There was only one waitress working, and I felt bad for her having to man a whole restaurant by herself. She even forgot about us because we sat outside. The food was excellent! Ron ((owner/chef), formerly of Teshimas restaurant, sat down with us and chatted even though he was busy. Very cozy setting. Plenty of parking in the back of the restaurant considering it's location. Eggplant appetizer was excellent! The Soba noodles I ordered were full of flavor and well portioned. My wife and kids ordered the grilled ahi and tempura. The ahi and tempura were both made to perfection . All the portions were plentiful. Great casual atmosphere. Quick attentive service. We stopped in on our first day on the Big Island and inhaled every bite of our meal - omelette fried rice, miso egg plant, shrimp tempura, and beef teriyaki sticks. We tasted other restaurants all over the island. But we craved Fumi's all week so much that we drove 40 minutes from our hotel to get our fix of the fried rice. We stopped in here while we were visiting The big island and had a craving for Asian food. Absolutely horrible food. Service was good but the place was empty, should've been the first hint. We had oysters which were fishy and terrible, I could hardly choke one down. I had the salmon which was dry and over cooked and left a lot to be desired. We spent way too much money on bad food. They serve the main courses with soup, sweet cabbage, and pickled cucumbers, and this delicious dipping sauce for the shrimp and pork. You can mix them to your heart's content, and blending the flavors results in a very happy and satisfying experience. The pork was seasoned perfectly, yet you could still experience the flavor of the pork. Watching them deliver their trays loaded with food makes you really anticipate yours coming out! Part of good food is presentation, and this is the real deal. I saw another reviewer complain that this isn't a real Japanese restaurant. I ordered yakisoba here after seeing a menu populated with common Japanese food items, believing it to be a Japanese restaurant. The yakisoba I got was... Interesting. It was extremely sour, not at all salty, definitely not soba noodles (looked like ramen from a pack), and zucchini instead of the more traditional carrot. The Saimin and beef teriyaki/shrimp tempura combo tray off the dinner menu were both excellent. They are known for their tempura and it was truly one of the best tempuras I've had anywhere. Do not get the sukiyaki here. Don't know why places still use canned bamboo shoots but it made the dish have a weird taste/stale taste and also the sauce was so sweet and not at all good. It was also too expensive. The saving grace was the clams but at 16 dollars it's a darn expensive appetizer. read more
