Usually you can go in Funks and have a quiet breakfast. Today 2 disgruntled employees complaining about everything management doesn't do right and how they would handle it if they were in charge. One complaint and scenario after another. I noticed I got all my food before a couple of ladies that where clearly into there second cup of coffee. I said something to my waitress about all of the loud complaining and she said those 2 are always into it about something. I truly and deeply feel worry for the future of this country. Service is trash unless you get an older waitress and when complaining in front of customers is not addressed in the work place I feel the owner is getting his business trashed by the very people he hired. This is place is just OK. I've been here 4-5 times, and I've never hated it, but I've never been impressed either. If I wasn't lazy, what I'd get here, is pretty much what I could make myself at home. We arrived to a 30 - 45 minute wait for a table. At the 45 minute mark we were informed the wait would be another 20 minutes. After over an hour of waiting we were finally at at the table next to the kitchen. It then took almost a half an hour to get our appetizers. Appetizer arrived 5 minutes before our meal. Very poorly timed. The Fried chicken dinner was a disappointment. The South Carolina Seafood Pasta was also a disappointment. The scallops were dime size as we're the shrimp. Not worth the price. The Burger was quite good but someone with a very greasy hand picked it up when it was being delivered as it had a greasy thumb print on the bottom with makes me worry about crosscontamination between dishes so overall 1/5 for service 1/5 for food. read more

I tried this restaurant for the first time on Friday evening, June 10th at about 4:15PM. This restaurant used to be either Lapp's or Leola Family Restaurant (I forget). Anyway, the exterior on the original section looks much like it used to. However, the large and beautiful indoor/outdoor bar area and outdoor patio is the bright addition to this property. Please note that there is a host stand for the inside of the restaurant and the outside. We used the outside one, and I did not go to the inside of the restaurant; therefore, I cannot comment on the inside. We were seated promptly; however, arrived early. As the time went on and by the time we left at 5:30PM, it was beginning to get very full. I heard this place only opened about three weeks ago. I absolutely applaud the restaurant on the number of tables in the outdoor area. It is beautiful and would be even more beautiful at night. The lights, the torches, the fire pits, etc. Anyway, we sat outside and had a very friendly server (I believe his name was Matt). They have some excellent happy hour specials, and we took advantage of a few of the drink specials on the HH menu. We ordered a shared appetizer of the corn and crab balls, which were absolutely delicious with some kind of cucumber dip. For my main entree, I had the stuffed meatloaf. You got a choice of two sides. I had the Caesar salad and the cauliflower and bacon. I personally though the salad was a little boring; however, the other side as well as the main entree came in a huge portion and was an absolute winner. Years ago I would come to Funck's for their fried chicken. Before ordering I asked the waitress if it was the same recipe as years ago and she said yes. Well it wasn't even close. Nor was it "fresh hand-breaded" as the menu said. She also acted as if it was a bother to wait on my friend and I. She never asked to refill our iced tea, never checked to ensure our meal was good, never asked if we wanted dessert. I also felt the prices were extremely high for what was provided. Funck's Palmyra was recommended to us by a local delivery driver when our party of 13 was deciding where to have breakfast before heading to Hershey Park. We called and they were able to seat us right away. The service and food was fantastic. Our server Laurie kept our coffee mugs filled and our food was out in no time with absolutely no errors. The clientele was mostly locals and away from the touristy and fast food options near the park. We had such a great meal that we returned for breakfast the next day! My family eats at Funck's all the time - it's close to our house and affordable. The atmosphere is usually relaxed. If the service matched everything else, I'd rate them 5 stars but the service sucks! The bartenders are extremely attentive but the wait staff are terrible. We've watched multiple servers delay service, bring entrees before we're finished with an appetizer or salad, and bring a check well before we want it and makes us feel rushed out the door even when the dining room is mostly empty. Update: it seems the Funck's management has done a good job to improve the customer service of the wait staff. We have had several good experiences over the past few months feeling like we can take our time. read more

What has happened to Funck's in Palmyra?It used to be a place to go for a varied menu and good food Not anymore. Limited menu that you can find anywhere and everything is fried. I won't comment on service because that's a problem all restaurants are having. That might be the reason for the decline on food choices and quality or maybe they no longer feel any pressure to offer quality food because of the closure of their strongest competitor, Dukes. Also the Wasabi and Sewasdee don't have table service and the Sinkhole Saloon no longer serves anything edible but that's a story for another time. I for one will no longer patronize either Funcks or the Sinkhole Saloon. Guess I'll be dining in Hershey and Hummelstown. read more

Saturday 4/2/22 A my girl friend wanted to stopped by Funks restaurant to grab dinner. After my girl friend ordered the meatloaf dinner, I decided on the 4 piece chicken dinner. I don't like coleslaw so I asked the waitress it there was something else I could have in its place. she said yes and mentioned the side menu, so I chose the onion rings. I asked if I could have only white meat. yes.. when my food arrived the chicken and onion rings were a very dark beyond golden brown as if the oil they would have been fried in hasn't been changed for quit awhile.. not sure if that was the case I didn't say anything but, I tried eating the onion rings, not good at all so I passed on eating them. when it was time to leave I got the bill for my 4 piece chicken meal. there was an up charge for the chicken of about $2.00 which would have been nice to have known first... but acceptable. But a up charge of $3.00 for the onion rings was not. I only had water to drink. with a Tip my bill was around $28.00 which is crazy for just 4 Pieces of chicken meal. We were looking for a quick hearty breakfast to hold us over for our day of adventure in Hershey and boy did we find it. This place has awesome breakfast choices and if it isn't on their menu they will make it for you. My bacon and cheese omelette was stuffed with crunchy bacon and cheese. My daughter loved the chocolate chip pancakes. They were so big she couldn't finish them but she sure did try. Don't let the outside discourage you. The parking lot was full but inside it is very large with loads of tables and a really nice new decor. The service was fast and very good. How this place hasn't been shut down I'll never know. It's a gross, dusty mess. Your shoes stick to the floor. We gave it a try anyway. Sat at the bar, big mistake. Bartender ( male) making himself as many drinks as people at the bar. Correct me if I'm wrong but probably not the best idea. Food was ok, fancy bar food at best, over sized portions trying to keep up with way better places. Flies on the beer taps, not a lot of variety and the female bartender was too busy flirting to help. While I enjoy Funcks for their atmosphere and drinks, I do not suggest going here to eat. I have on multiple occasions been let down by the quality of the food. I also recently read their health inspection released on 8/18/17 and they did not do well. They had multiple violations including an employee cutting cheese without wearing any gloves. Stopped in for lunch to try this place out and the whole experience was very underwhelming. We had a soup and salad and lunch special wrap(chicken ranch). We didn't get out before an hour and 10 minutes had passed because it took a long time to get our order. The salad was ok and the soup was lukewarm. The wrap had an add juice/liquid that had soaked the chicken on one half which tasted awful. Seating area was nice but a/c was cut way back or not working right on the pub/bar side. The pics of the fries are of what they used to be months ago, now you don't get real cheese or good fries, instead it's some cheese wiz and a finger of bacon. We stopped in for a quick dinner. I ended up ordering the chicken quesadilla and my friend ordered the cheese quesadilla and cheese curds. The quesadillas were very tasty, however the cheese curds were overdone. The bartender approached us right after we sat down and quickly helped us, but did not check how our food was. I've been here twice now (once on a Saturday dinner service and once for Thursday happy hour) and both times were seriously underwhelming. I'll get the good stuff out of the way first: the interior renovations look great. I've eaten in this building many times before through 2-3 previous ownerships, and this is the best it's ever looked. I was blown away. Aesthetically, it has a lot of character. The bad stuff was everything else, namely the food and drinks...which are kind of important. Food: I've tasted 4-5 dishes off the menu, entrees and apps, and everything was pretty awful. My mashed potatoes were brown and bland and had to have been sitting in a pot for a long, long time before making its way onto my plate. Frozen appetizers that are reheated / refried to mushy goodness. French fries (c'mon...how do you mess this up?) were a soggy, greasy mess. Drinks: My first time there, my waitress had to come back to our table and re-take my beer order...four...times. I wasn't actually served a beer until my disgusting mashed potatoes had already got to the table. My second time there, I ordered a "new old fashioned" off the happy hour menu which apparently is just a really watered down old fashioned. I also had some fruity martini-style cocktail that, I kid you not, tasted like straight cough syrup. I promise I'm not a chronic complainer. I tried really, really hard to find something tasty or delicious, but everything I had was gross. As a longtime Leola native, I want to see this place do well, but when a restaurant has only been open for a few weeks and are already taking shortcuts, I'm not gonna hold my breath.
