I will say that if you're looking for a cafe to switch up your "work from home" day, I would not recommend this place. The music and smoothie machine gets a little loud. I didn't take a picture of the breakfast burrito I ordered because I inhaled it. It was a chorizo burrito and man was it good. The hash browns are soft and well seasoned, Pico de Gallo is fresh, and that aioli sauce (I think it's a garlic aioli) brings it to another level. The flavor is there but what really impressed me was the actual wrapping of the whole thing. The burrito is packed, not a giant but it is a good size. I was eating that bad boy in my car while I was driving. Everything held nice and tight as I munched through from end to end. Absolutely delicious. Personally I'd like the chorizo to be more spicy but that's me. Other than that, it's a damn good burrito. read more

I ordered Uber eats from Funcles for lunch and it was pretty good. I got the steak and cheese (without mushrooms) but half way through eating it I found mushrooms in my sandwich.... And I also got the cheese croquettes. The steak and cheese was very good and the flavor was there but it was really messy. As seen in the picture, and good thing I am not allergic to mushrooms, but someone else could be. Should be more careful with reading the notes. Glad I tried it though, I do want to try the breakfast next time. read more

Ok I have taken way too long to write this review. My gluten free family rejoice, this is the best gluten free sandwich I think I've ever had. Let's get down to it. Funcle's is a little cafe I found in Hamden by chance. I am so glad I did and now I go weekly (or more). The food is always perfectly prepared and it's tastes homemade and fresh. The portions are more than enough and they've never made a mistake that's made me sick due to the gluten exposure. There are so many delicious things on the menu. Even though the menu is small. My favorite thing has to be the homemade aiolis though. The sandwiches are phenomenal but then you add the aioli and it blows your mind. The care they must take for all their orders is so impressive. Also the prices are very fair for the amount of food you get. It's a high quality, five star breakfast for Cafe prices. I also want to give a shout out to the staff. They are so kind and always communicate with you even if the order is placed on Uber. They remember my order and treat me so well when I stop in it almost makes me feel like part of the Funcles family. You should absolutely stop in and try it. I entered Funcles with high expectations reading the 5 star reviews on Yelp and other sites. For my review, I'll break it down into three components: 1. The Food (3 stars): Solid menu with average quality - though fell short of great. 2. The Coffee Lids (2 stars): They offer lids with the pull back tabs. There were 3 of us, and the pull back tabs wouldn't stay down for 2 of 3 cups. Quite annoying when your nose has to hold up the tab each time you go in for a sip of coffee. I realize we're talking coffee lids here... but it is a breakfast place. 3. Customer Service (1 star): This is where the wheels fell off. My wife and I each ordered large coffees. She asked for 2 pumps of hazelnut in hers and I asked for 1 pump of vanilla in mine. Our intention was to get just a little syrup rather than the full amount. The coffees came out quite sweet as they pour it in rather than use the pump bottles like Starbucks where you can count pumps. No big deal, not their fault, and easily fixable. I waited until a time when there were no customers in line and I politely explained the coffee was sweeter than we wanted. I suggested that she give us some extra black coffee in a separate cup figuring we can pour some sweet coffee out and add the black coffee in. I thought it was a reasonable ask and I did so in a kind way as I was not blaming them for the coffee being sweet. Apparently we were out of line as the woman behind the counter rolled her eyes before obliging our request while repeatedly shaking her head in a 'No' motion throughout the process of pouring our extra coffee cup. While I found the shaming a bit funny, I felt the Funcles team missed out on an easy opportunity to demonstrate good customer service, and instead turned it into a memorable experience of poor customer service. We ultimately gave the woman an additional $5 for the extra coffee after feeling shamed for asking for the extra cup. At this point, she doubled-down on her anger exclaiming that we got what we ordered the first time. She was right on this point so I guess she wins. read more

Let me tell you a few things I have come to know about Funcle's: 1. The start - Opened amid COVID-19, Funcle's introduced this wonderful neck of Hamden to an elevated take on your neighborhood breakfast & lunch cafe. 2. The menu - creative plays on traditional favorites (biscuits and gravy!), modern combinations with healthy ingredients (avocado toast!), fun experiments with regional dishes (chicken and waffles!) ... the food effin rocks and only makes you want to try other stuff. 3. The catering - I hosted a small, socially-distant outdoor gathering and Funcle's came through with an awesome, elegant menu. They took our suggestions and made them way better, which was fun and delicious. The food was prepared and served on individual plates, skewers, and in bowls to ensure no shared use, which made it easy for us to enjoy a safe, anxiety-free get-together. 4. Which brings me to the last point: the folks - owners Dan and Denis - are really great and helpful (especially with the catering) and all of the folks I've encountered at Funcle's on the phone or in-person have been really helpful and welcoming. 5. Bonus: The mf gd vanilla milkshakes! And green tea! This stuff is like handing a Zippo to a pyromaniac - use responsibly. read more

Have been here twice since the current business opened here. Over the years this has been a tough location for a restaurant but these guys are friendly, motivated and have a more substantial menu. Coffee is good. That said I took points off because their selection of pastries is limited and I had one of their "New York" bagels w cream cheese and it was the driest, stalest bagel I've ever had with a barely visible layer of cream cheese. Probably won't go back unless my go to coffee places are closed. read more
