Futago is very tasty and their options for udon are simple and fresh. I've been here twice and enjoyed my meals - although it is good, it's not the best I've had. Why I liked it: Everything was so fresh! The noodles are the perfect chewiness and thickness, the vegetables and green onions are refreshing to taste and the broth is not too heavy at all. It's nice and clear unlike many other places where it's too oily or salty. I'd definitely come here again, as it's the perfect portions, good price given the quality of materials, and a great meal for freezing cold Boston weather! Why it could be better: The broth itself is savory but I think it's missing some flavor and that perfect umami taste of udon broth. I had the duck udon; the duck slices were really great in portion and the deliciously distinct duck flavor was also very strong! However, the pieces were way too hard and chewy for me - I had to put each whole slice in my mouth and slowly work through it because I couldn't even bite it in half as it was so chewy. And I was on a date with a very cute boy so I had to look good eating :( I would recommend them to look into their way of cooking the duck or where they source it to figure out why it was so darn tough! I love this place so much that I had to come back to try their appetizers. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. For appetizers, I ordered the Agedashi tofu and Chicken tatsuta-age. First of all, the presentation of the tofu was missing something. In a round bowl, there were two pieces of the fried tofu. This made the bowl look very, very empty. In addition, the tofu was sitting over a thickened mushroom broth, similar to the consistency of a sweet and sour soup. For $8, this is not worth it. The chicken tatsuta-age was also disappointing. The order came with 4 pieces and for $7 is decent. However, there was a lack of seasoning to the chicken. Yes, the meat was juicy. No it was not crispy. I greatly enjoyed their pork kimchi and miso carbonara. The pork kimchi udon had a fair share of pork and kimchi. The miso carbonara did not skimp out on the bacon. The carbonara is on the heavier side, making it very much sharable. All in all, I love the udon of this place. But I have to take back a few stars for the disappointing appetizers. read more

The duck is the same broth, it's pretty good if you like duck 4/5. The sukiyaki one is pretty good too 4/5. Cheese niku tastes too western for me and also too milky and creamy 3/5. But take these with a grain of salt: I haven't had those since I was in hs (2 years ago ). Honestly, my best rec is to just get a plain one. No need for fancy ingredients. It is an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs prepare your delicious bowl of udon if you sit at the bar area. The menu is simple. There are a few Japanese appetizers that I love. There is a selection of signature udon, hot udon, and cold udon. I ordered the takoyaki and agedashi tofu. The takoyaki is nice and crispy on the outside and soft and pillow-y on the inside. It is topped off with the takoyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise and bonito flakes. The agadashi tofu is bathe in a mushroom broth. The tofu is nice and soft with a crispy and chewy batter on the outside. The broth is flavorful and delicious. It gives a umami flavor to each bite. I ordered the ebi kiakage udon. It comes with 3 pieces of lightly fried shrimp/veggie tempura and a generous portion of udon. The broth is a delicious shoyu broth. It is light and flavorful. The udon is made to order. It is super chewy and soft and the broth wraps around each noodle, making each bite super delicious. It seems like the udon is made in house! I also tried a couple bites of the duck udon. It comes with 6-7 slices of duck breast that is nicely marinated and lightly seared. It comes with a delicious citrous-y and savory yuzu that elevated the flavors of the duck. Came here for dinner on a weeknight before going to an event at the WBUR CitySpace nearby, and there was a wait of a few minutes which wasn't bad. I got the ankake udon (hot udon with thick egg broth) for $11, which reminded me of an egg drop soup with noodles in it. The other reviewers were right in that the noodles aren't as chewy or bouncy as the ones at Yume Ga Arukara, but if you want a slower pace where you can sit down and chat with a friend, this place is a good alternative. read more

I want to love this place but I think since it just opened it has a few kinks to work out. My friends and I came on a Friday at 12pm and the place is already filled. The interior is gorgeous! We were seated by the floor to ceiling window but the sun was glaring down on us and on the table. It was way too hot and we had to ask to move to another table. I hope they invest in curtains. They have a pretty extensive menu. Lots of udon bowls to choose from and some rice bowls. They are on the pricier side at $10+ per bowl. The presentation of all their bowls are gorgeous! However I'm not a big fan of their spoons/ladles. It's so big, but it's pretty flat. It makes it difficult to scoop broth and difficult to eat from. There were 4 people in my group. 3 of us were served luke warm udon. The last udon bowl that was brought out was the only one that was hot. I think because the last bowl had tempura, it took the longest to make. All the other bowls were probably left out waiting for that last bowl to finish being prepared. I need my food steaming hot, especially anything with soup/broth. Warm broth is not satisfying. UNI CREAM UDON($21) - lots of uni and fish roe. The uni was perfrctly creamy and sweet. The broth itself was creamy but not heavy. The udon was perfectly chewy. EGG UDON with CRAB - I can't remember what it was called, but it is like a fishy egg drop soup. Strong dashi flavor. About a 35 minute wait on a Friday night. It went by fast as we headed next door to Mei Mei for some dumplings as a starter. We were asked to share a spot at the community table which we were OK with doing. I was really looking forward to the fried chicken appetizer but they ran out and anything that came with fried chicken (like the curry udon); other items on the menu weren't available including the sukiyaki and nabeyaki udons. I overheard they also ran out of the carbonara while we were eating. In some ways it is great that they are getting such good business to be running out of popular dishes, but it was disappointing to my tummy. Not sure if only a certain amount of ingredients are prepared daily and so they run out, or if it's an operations/inventory forecasting issue. My suggestion is to go on the early side! With no fried chicken, I opted to for fried tofu in a mushroom broth. The tofu was nice and crispy on the outside and smooth and soft on the inside, and the broth was good. I had the snow crab udon in a thick egg soup. For a bowl of $18 udon, I would say it was good but not great. Overall, I love that there is an udon place as an alternative option to all the ramen places around. And I love that they have so many different udon options. read more

Futago Udon is located on Park Drive in Brookline, Ma. It is adjacent to Mei Mei. There is street parking but if none is available you can also park on Ivy Street, which has two hours parking, and walk a short distance over. My husband and I went early on a Friday morning before the store opened. It was cold and rainy and the door was opened so we ventured in knowing that they weren't opened yet. The waitress who greeted us was so kind. She seated us and brought out water. We just couldn't place our orders prior to opening. This was a great opportunity for us to take pictures of the store empty. The first thing that will grab your eyes is the huge mural on the wall. The restaurant is spacious and brightly lit with huge window and views of the streets. Next is the wall display of ceramic bowls that they serve the udon in. Behind that is a semi open kitchen. Overall, the floor plan is amazing. They did an amazing job with the overall interior. For appetizer we ordered their take on agedashi tofu and fried squid legs. The fried squid leg came with a slice of lemon and Japanese mayonnaise. The lemon help cuts the greasiness so definitely use it. My husband enjoyed it. My recommendation is that they allowed the dish to be drained of excess oil prior to serving. Now on to the tofu. From other yelpers, I learned that you will either love or hate the agedashi tofu. It is not the traditional agedashi tofu you would get hence I say "their take" on the dish. The broth is just slightly thicken and contained a combination of enoki and shimeji mushrooms and beated egg whites. It was topped with bonito flakes. The steam from the dish causes the bonito flakes to move, nothing is alive, fret not if this is your first time. It has sliced scallions for garnishment. It has the subtle broth flavor with traditional dashi, soy sauce, mirin and sugar that you are used to with this Japanese dish but it also has a slightly sour taste. The two huge chunks of tofu were lightly battered and fried. The dish came out piping hot. I ate every last bit of the dish as it was that good. In fact, it was the highlight of the meal so everything that came after had it tough. We debated the entire ride to the restaurant on which udon to try. It was raining so a hot bowl was warranted but I really wanted to try their cold udon with the traditional flavors. We ended up be adventurous. We tried the kimchi and pork udon and the uni cream udon. The kimchi udon broth was slightly sweet and sour. It does not have the strong bold flavors of a pork and kimchi stew so don't go expecting that. It is very light and subtle in terms of kimchi flavor which I thought made sense if you want to finish a bowl that size. The same goes with the uni cream udon. The broth was served warm and the taste is also subtle. My husband said it reminded him of steamed milk. There was plenty of fresh uni and crab meat. I wouldn't have it again because I got tired after the third bite since it is a cream broth. But it is light enough that you can actually finish and not regret it. I was able to finish 3/4 of the dish before giving up. I recommend sharing this if you go in a large group and just want to see what it taste like. I don't think we picked their best udons. Next time we will try the curry udon and the carbonara udon. Overall, great experience. I highly recommend this restaurant. Exceptional customer service and great appetizer. read more

The service here is great, the staff is really friendly and the interior of the restaurant is aesthetic and cozy! Yay, more udon arrives in the Boston food scene! I heard about their soft opening this weekend and planned a visit today for lunch. Futago is located on Park Drive (BU's south campus) next to Mei Mei. It's a decent sized restaurant with sit down tables and a handful of bar seats. The interior was bright with colorful paintings on the walls. Parking wasn't too difficult as it is available on the side streets and Beacon St. As for food....there are so many options! The menu features plenty of apps and hot/cold udon. We didn't try any apps because the udon bowls were huge. We ordered the hot uni cream udon, hot pork kimchi udon, hot miso carbonara udon, and the cold mad tiger udon. The hot miso carbonara udon was creamy and had big pieces of bacon. The udon was also cooked to perfection. The cold mad tiger udon had a healthy portion of minced spicy miso pork and sliced cucumber and cherry tomatoes. It was only a hint spicy and the noodles had more of chew to them than the hot version. The broth was also flavorful and refreshing. I also tried a little bit of the uni cream and pork kimchi udon. They were both delicious and my friends enjoyed them. Our waitress was attentive and came to check on us a couple times. The restaurant filled up pretty quickly after we arrived at 12. Overall this is a great addition to the neighborhood! There were a couple items that were unavailable during the soft opening that I will definitely be back to try. Not bad, but not amazing. Good service but a bit overpriced. Came with a party of 4 on a weekday night and was seated immediately. However, when we left an hours later, there was a long line. They have beautiful interior decorations. The plates, napkins, and chopsticks were very pretty and elegant. The menu is quite large with lots of udon options (both hot and cold), rice dishes, and appetizers. We ordered 4 different udons - cold uni, spicy kimchi, curry chicken, and niku. I thought my cold uni udon was ok . The uni was obviously very good, but I wish there as more broth in the noodles. Also, the noodles seemed a bit undercooked. They were a bit hard to chew. My boyfriend had the curry chicken and I was able to try some of it. The curry broth was pretty good, and there were big pieces of chicken katsu that were very tender and flavorful. The noodles were soft and chewy. I liked this more than my own. I didnt get to try the niku or the spicy kimchi udon, but my friends seemed thought they were ok. Oh my God I'm so happy this place exists. What a beautiful spot to get delicious, soft and "kiu" udon noodles steeped in rich yet light broth, surrounded by beautiful wall art, incredibly friendly and thoughtful staff, very fast service. Came here on a Wednesday night around 6pm. Even though my partner hadn't arrived yet, they weren't terribly busy yet and were kind enough to seat me while I waited. I ordered a green tea (nice and earthy flavor) to pass the time, and once my partner arrived we quickly decided to order the purple potato fries, the miso carbonara, the duck udon, and the mont blanc for dessert. The fries: sweet, wonderfully battered and crispy, and paired with a lovely aioli-type sauce. The miso carbonara LOOKED really rich and heavy, but it actually was quite light compared to how it appeared, and was very tasty. The duck udon was a huge delight: massive portion of duck, smokey, rich broth, and perfectly cooked udon noodles with a smattering of green onion slivers throughout the soup. The mont blanc was probably my least favorite thing we ordered -- the matcha green tea "spaghetti" was a bit more paste-like and less light than I would have liked, although the cake was airy, and the red bean to cream ratio was good. The bill came out to $60 after tax and tip, which was very reasonable for the amount of food we got. However, the staff is super efficient - right before a table opened up, someone came outside to take our order. When we were seated, we shared the sweet potato tempura for an appetizer - it was super crispy and came with a nice aioli sauce. They had a pretty good amount of vegetarian options and I ordered the Hot Sansai Udon. The broth was well seasoned and I only had to add a dash of the chili powder they provided. The duck udon I ended up ordering was actually amazing. The broth had a lot of depth, the duck breast was tender and delicious, and the yuzu paste added a perfect element of fragrance and spice. The udon noodles themselves leaned toward the firmer end of the spectrum which I really enjoyed. The fried octopus appetizer was also excellent and perfectly crispy without being too oily. The waiter was really friendly, but I did request a small omission which was completely ignored. It's these little things (and the half-menu) that keep it at a 4 for me, but these are easy improvements to make and I definitely see myself coming back soon. read more

I ordered the Signature Sukiyaki Udon while my friend got the Pork Kimchi Udon. Both were amazing. Even though it's a little on the pricier side ($16-18) for a bowl of noodles, the portions are HUGE. There's so much ingredients in each bowl.. beef, tofu, cabbage, enoki mushrooms, yummy poached egg in it that makes it super filling! I only finished half and was already stuffed. One portion is definitely enough to be able to split into two meals?! Um no need to cook dinner tomorrow night YES!!! Packed the remaining to go and they're super thoughtful that they separate the udon from the soup so that it doesn't get soggy. Service was pretty fast and friendly. Futago is the latest udon spot to hit the Boston area and is definitely one to visit! The space is pretty minimalistic and beautifully designed, from their menus to the ceramic bowls above the bar and the pops of color from the wall art. I ordered the Miso Carbonara Udon, which my waitress stated was her favorite, and was quickly served a good portion of al dente noodles in a creamy Parmesan cheese broth. They were quite generous with the strips of bacon, which may have made the dish a bit too salty for me, but the cream helps to balance the salt content. There was supposed to be a hint of Miso flavor, but I think it could be a little more pronounced because the other elements of the dish drown it out. For dessert, I also ordered the Matcha Mont Blanc, (the first I've seen around Boston!), which had a smooth matcha purée layered on top of the sponge cake, alongside whipped cream and blueberries. It was supposed to be filled with red bean, but I only got a few pieces. I would still recommend this dessert, but wish the chefs would add more red bean. Service is super attentive, as they came by to see how I was doing/filled my water often. I will definitely be back to try their other flavors, and would advise everyone to go soon because I know this place will get popular quickly! Overall, Futago gets a 3.5 in my book, but had to round to 4 for Yelp. Pretty decent - they have a few things to work on, but I appreciate they're looking for feedback on how to improve. A nice addition to the Boston noodle scene. They have a variety of fusion udon noodle bowls that range anywhere from uni cream, to curry chicken, to sukiyaki beef, to kimchi pork... there is one for everyone! I tried the curry fried chicken one and it was pretty tasty - the fried chicken was juicy and flavorful - one of the best I've had. The udon noodles, however, was a little bit too soft for my personal taste. My friend ordered the kimchi pork one the the broth tasted amazing - a very pleasant complex smoky flavor! The bowl was pretty huge and she couldn't even finish it. They also have a few deserts on the menu and we tried the green tea short cake - it was light and tasty, but the green tea flavor was pretty faint. I had heard that there was a new Udon shop in town so decided to stop by after work. I arrived at 5:15 on a Thursday afternoon and there were two other parties already there. I got seated quickly at the counter where you can sit and watch the food being made and prepared. I ordered the Uni Cream Udon and it was delicious! The noodles were a perfect thickness, the broth was not too dense, and the uni was top notch. I appreciated that they put the uni, snow crab, and mentaiko on top of a shiso leaf so it wouldn't drown in the broth. The portion size was fairly large. The only critique I have is that I thought the dish could have been served a little hotter as it got luke-warm pretty quickly. The service was great though as the waiters regularly filled my water and checked in on me. I left a little around 6:15 and it was already starting to get packed. Finally another udon place in Boston! I've been here twice now since they've opened and both times have been excellent. As a heads up, they get SUPER packed so I would highly recommend calling in advance! The wait is well worth it in my opinion though. FOOD: The first time I went with my friend I got their miso carbonara which had a smoky flavor due to the bacon. Then the second time I went with my boyfriend and got the Uni cream which was fairly rich and creamy without the broth being too thick while my boyfriend got the Niku Udon (in his words to describe it: umami, flavorful, and delicate). The udon is perfectly cooked to be al Dente. The udon noodles this restaurant uses is kind of on a thinner side which is my preference. Aside from their udon dishes, I've also had their takoyaki and Japanese fried chicken, both of which were really good as well. SERVICE: Service was really attentive. I rarely had to ask for my water to be refilled and they were ready to take my order as soon as I sat down. I probably only had to wait 10-15 minutes or so for my food to come out. They also give you the option to write down your phone number if they're packed and will call you when a table's open which was pretty convenient. ATMOSPHERE: The interior design of this restaurant is really interesting. There's 2 Japanese murals inside the restaurant and lined on the walls are other Japanese decorations. Futago always satisfies. My favorites are the pork kimchi udon and sukiyaki udon because it's very flavorful and balanced. I like the uni cream udon too but I don't really like that I can't indulge in the soup part since it's so creamy. The takoyaki can be passed on but will do the job if you're craving it! read more

So happy to have an amazing udon place in the area!! It's right next to mei mei's. It's a relatively small restaurant and theyre getting popular so get there early. The entire place was basically filled at 6pm on a Saturday. I came with a group of 6 and they were able to accommodate us. Noise level is low. The food takes a little while to come out but not a ridiculously long time. Service is excellent here - your glass is never more than half empty. I tried the pork belly kimchi udon and loved it. It looks way spicier than it actually is (I can't eat very spicy). There was plenty of meat in it, just the right amount of Kimchi, and comes with a poached egg. The broth was a mixture of a little salty, a touch of sweet flavor, and a little spicy. It was literally perfect! The portion is also quite generous too. I also tried their cheesecake dessert, which was really good but SO SMALL. It's literally the size of a kiddy dessert. It's definitely not meant for sharing, was barely enough for me. So my advice is that if you're gonna get dessert, get one order per person. I highly recommend coming here! I know I'll definitely be back. read more

I was extremely excited to see another udon shop open in the area! This place will definitely satisfy your cravings for udon. Located right next to MeiMei's on Park Drive, it's a convenient location to get to. I really wanted the sukiyaki udon, but they didn't have all the ingredients yet, so I asked my waitress which she would recommend between the carbonara or the duck. She convinced me to get the carbonara to try out something different. The broth is creamy and light, I expected it to be heavier since it was going to be creamy. There's plenty of bacon in each bite to go with the perfectly cooked udon noodles. I wish the noodles were thicker but other than that I'm excited to go back and try out all the other udon dishes. They also serve different appetizers such as takoyaki and fried chicken. I'd definitely recommend coming here for the friendly service and delicious udon! read more

Best bang for your buck: the spicy miso pork rice bowl. Also recommend: the fried chicken curry udon Still has to try: sukiyaki udon. I'm really happy another good Asian restaurant has popped up in the neighborhood. The prices is on the high side but the quality of the food reflects that. The only critique I have is that I like to have a variety of food in my meal, and many udons here are quite simple, consisting of only 2-3 ingredients. Japanese cuisine enthusiasts might argue that this is reflects the spirit of fine dining - really letting the few ingredients shine. But I don't care about that. Udon should be comfort food, and I need variety of food in my meals. If you're like me, then I suggest ordering some appetizers on the side. read more

The best place to go to on a snowy, cold day. There were so many options for the udon, especially for hot udon so it was difficult to make a decision! My friends and I ended up ordering the Miso Carbonara Udon, Pork Kimchi Udon and the Kitsune Udon. This let us taste all of the different flavor profiles of Udon. I was worried that the carbonara udon would be a little heavy but I assure you, it's not! It's the perfect amount of creaminess and cheesiness. The Pork Kimchi Udon was the favorite of everyone at the table though because the broth was just that good. There were also a lot of toppings and kimchi in the udon. My other friend who got the Kitsune said that it was just a good, standard udon. I would recommend trying out the more "adventurous" udon flavors! We also got the green tea cheesecake for dessert... And it was actually pretty disappointing. I think the size initially surprised us because it is definitely a tiny slice. When we all tried it, none of us could taste any hint of green tea and it just tasted like dense cheese. I wouldn't recommend the green tea cheesecake. Maybe I'll try the Yuzu cheesecake next time! I'm coming back to try all of the other udons! The Kamo Nanban udon is next :) I will probably also crave the Carbonara udon in the future read more

This is probably my new favorite noodle place in the Boston area and I've visited a ton of ramen/noodle shops around the city. We came by around 7:45 on a Friday night. With a rather short wait of maybe 10 minutes for a party of 3, we were seated promptly. The menu has a variety of udon dishes, whether you want hot dishes, cold dishes, or their signature dishes such as their Miso Carbonara Udon. With my first visit, my friends and I tried different things: The Pork Kimchi Ramen, the Sukiyaki Udon, and the Fried Chicken Udon. All 3 dishes were so good and flavorful where we all finished our dishes, including the soup. The dish I ordered was the fried chicken curry udon, which had udon noodles, karage chicken, and tomatoes/scallions. The sukiyaki udon was probably the best of the 3 that we tried and would probably order it again when I come back! read more
