I discovered Amanda at G Salon several years ago and now rely on her for my regular color and cuts. Although I have strong feelings about what I want, I count on Amanda to be honest with me about the state of my hair. At my very first appointment with her, she helped correct an awful color that I'd gotten elsewhere. She notices when my bangs need a trim but never suggests an unnecessary haircut when all I really need is a color. I also look forward to Amanda's wonderful shampoos (today's helped get rid of my headache). Although the cut and color are the priorities here, it's a nice perk that I enjoy conversation with Amanda, too. She's smart and kind. She's observant and careful. Because of something Amanda noticed while coloring my hair last year, I checked in with my dermatologist. It turned out that I needed surgery. The problem was caught early, thanks to Amanda. I will be forever grateful. Finally: Prices are reasonable. I'm always able to park (for free) up the street on 11th Ave. The salon is comfortable (and Arizmendi Bakery is just down the block!). G Salon uses a convenient online appointment and communication system that makes it easy for me to change appointments without a phone call (my preference--you can book by phone, too, of course). The folks here work well as a team. Amanda is always on time. Her clients are young and old. Straight hair or curly (or like me--curly and frizzy). Bold color choices or subtle ones. But I think we all leave G Salon feeling beautiful and renewed. read more

I booked with Debra on Xmas eve. I showed her a few pictures of the cut I really liked, and she kind of just magically combined all of them. The results were great, and I hope I had taken a picture. She took the time to wave my hair like the pictures I had shown her. I would definitely go back to her. I've gotten so many compliments. I started going to G Salon for both cut and color since early last year. Chris a does fantastic job on my hair. Layers are very noticeable and give the hair "movement" feeling. ATTENTION CURLY HAIR GIRLS!!! Having curly hair is a blessing and a curse. So going to a new salon and trusting someone to cut it is a huge risk. G Salon was a nice surprise. Amanda has been my hairdresser steadily for the last three years, and occasionally she cut my hair when I was living outside of the Bay Area over the last six years. I see her regularly for my cut, color and styling needs. And I just started seeing her for Keratin Smoothing Treatments as well! I followed her over to G Salon after she left Supercuts, and this new salon is a real pleasure to visit! The lighting is very homey with a stylish, modern décor. Amanda sat me down, discussed thoroughly what I was looking for in a style and color, and offered me a hot cup of tea while she prepared her tools. My hair is really long, thick, and curly (think loose banana curls that don't easily straighten without extremely high heat). I don't trust anyone with my hair unless they truly understand the nature of curls. Amanda has my stamp of approval here, as she recognizes the need to essentially provide two separate cuts so that I can wear my hair both straight and curly. And if anything doesn't fall quite right or needs adjustment, she encourages me to come back and see her for a courtesy touch up! A month or two later, I still find friends and coworkers commenting on how nice my hair looks. Most recently she asked if I would be willing to come in and try out the Coppola Keratin Treatment product and procedure that she is certified to perform. It took a couple of hours to apply the product and comb it all through, let the chemicals sit, and then blow dry and straighten every tiny section of my long, thick hair. It looks fantastic! I LOVE how healthy and shiny my hair feels after having the smoothing treatment done! It takes about half the time that it used to for my hair to dry now and I am no longer encircled by my usual halo of frizz. My hair used to be so dry regardless of the various products I tried to keep it relatively tame. It is so much easier to style now, and I received so many compliments on how nice the color and cut looked -- even more after the keratin treatment than I usually do! I love going to see Amanda for my hair care needs. She is easy to talk to, attentive to truly understanding the style that I am requesting, and realistic and forthcoming in what styles will and won't work with my hair type and facial structure. She also has her own sense of style that is both cutting edge and artistic while still staying current and fashionable. I cannot recommend her highly enough! read more

Previously I cut my own hair because I have had my hair messed up quite a few times. Then a friend suggested Amada and since then I have been having her cut my hair. I have pretty thick and most of the time poofy hair so making it hard to cut so that it looks presentable but I have always been happy with my hair after having it cut by Amanda. She is very good at understanding what you want for your hair and making it look that way. Last time I went to Amanda I had decided I wanted purple hair and gave her a few pictures of others purple/pink/ magenta hair that I liked and she was able to find the colors and based on my hair and complexion do a combination of the photos (and colors) that was well suited for my hair and fair complexion. As a side note she is also very intuitive when it comes to talking. Most of the time I don't feel like talking when I am getting my hair done and unlike many hairdressers I have been to over the years, Amanda is good at picking up on how I am feeling on that particular day and whether or not I want to talk. read more

Some years back I found Chris through glowing reviews here on yelp. I have not had my hair cut by anyone else since! Chris has an amazing understanding of what my hair can and can not do. With his expert consultation, I have been able to try out many color and cut options that have worked very well with my personal style and hair type (wavy enough to make most stylists cringe:). Not only is Chris an expert in cut, color and style--he is a patient, wonderful person (who LISTENS to the ideas you have for your cut). I just had my first cut at this new location & love the way g salon looks, a great environment for a relaxing haircut. I was so lucky to get a slot of shampoo & blowout on a Friday afternoon! I still forget that in this city most salons rarely take walk-ins. Amanda did a great job with the shampoo, but she really did an amazing job with the blowout. My hair looked awesome throughout the day and then the next! Amanda is fun, upbeat and extremely talented! My hair is usually an interesting combination of frizzy, fuzzy and half-wavy on a good day, and when I went in my hair was next level crazy! Amanda gave me what is easily the best hair cut I've ever had. I came in saying "Like this, but shorter" (I know, I'm terrible), and came away with so much more. TL;DR - This salon is fantastic, Amanda is amazing, and I will never go anywhere else. There's really no excuse for not writing a review of G Salon previously, since I've been getting my hair cut and colored there for well over a year. I look infinitely better as a redhead, which is unfortunate since red is a very difficult color to get right and a pain to maintain. I've been through a number of colorists over many years and several cities, and hadn't been able to find one I liked for a while, so I walked in with the lower third of my hair a very faded, weird remnant of past red and the rest of my hair not looking so great either. I chose G Salon and Amanda based on reviews, and I'm so glad I did. She immediately picked out the right colors for me and for my sister (who has notoriously difficult hair to color), and managed to keep our shades of red just different enough so we don't look like twins. She also rehabbed my very fine hair so now it looks healthy and has great style even when I don't do anything to it (I'm so lazy about styling it on my own). She's maintained the color flawlessly and always listens carefully to any requests I have for changes. Not only that, but she's a great human being as well. I get antsy and chatty after a couple hours sitting around in a chair, and she's a saint for listening to my rambling and not getting annoyed. The customer service is top-notch! I've gone for years without a stylist when I couldn't find a good one, but I'm thrilled that I never have to do that again. Not only that, but my sister makes a point of scheduling appointments every time she comes into town from Omaha so she doesn't have to go to someone who isn't as good. Chris is the absolute best!! I have really thick, curly, and frizzy hair that know one has been able to cut and/or style my whole life until I met Chris. In fact, I straightened it for years because I just didn't know what else to do and either did any hairstylists. He has made me love my curls and was able to cut an style my hair in a way that enhances my hair type not hide it. I am now able to leave it curly and it doesn't cost a lot in product or time. This review is way overdue. Chris is my hair stylist. He's quick and to the point. He is no nonsense and will let you know what will look good and what won't. He will also consider your habits and whether you would actually take care of your hair. I only go to him once or twice a year, but he knows that I'm very minimalistic and cut my hair so it's easy to style. The worst experience I have ever had. Chris was so rough with my hair, when he washed my head he left bruises on my head. The last 2 days was painful to take a shower. I have been to both high and low end salon and none of my stylist has ever been this rough with me. When he cut my hair he kept hitting the side on my cheeks. I understand if you are having a bad day but you should never take it out on your customer. He also kept lecturing me how my choice for the color is not a good idea, he kept stopping when he blew my hair dry, I was literally freezing from having wet hair. Chris was unprofessional. I was extremely upset with my experience, I have done my hair with Debra before. I will not come back. I booked a reservation for hair cut and all over color. But in the end Chris charged me $70 haircut, $75 Root Touch Up and $80 Color toner and Glaze. He never mentioned the additional charges until it was time to pay at the counter. I was shocked. Overall I spent $339, $225 for the service, bought the shampoo and conditioner (praying that the color will last and I do not have to return to this salon ever), plus 15% tips. I went to this salon because of the great recommendation Chris has on yelp. But it was a nightmare. Never ever again. read more

I've been going to Chris for almost 2 years now. I found him initially on Yelp when I moved back to SF and into the Sunset. (It's a shame he can't transfer his reviews from 10th Avenue Salon.) I'm not even sure what she did that different but it styles so well and makes it look much thicker than it is. I have been seeing Chris for over 7 years and I will never go to anyone else. He is patient, listens, and would never give you that haircut you brought a picture of if he thinks it is not right for your face shape or hair texture. I will admit, I have strayed and tried some hip salons in Hayes Valley and the Mission over the years, and they are nowhere near as good as Chris, and charge double what he does.
