Wow... what a disappointment. It was my first time. There were people in the restaurant. That should have been my first clue. Two young men behind the counter. They were polite. One clearly was training. I asked for a sample of the tortilla soup. As I looked through their choices of protein, the selections looked stale. I couldn't bring myself to try it. It wasn't appetizing at all. The water choices from the fountain drinks were not marked. You can see a spout but you have to guess which is carbonated or regular. I know for a fact that management can do better than that. The restaurant was clean but with an empty restaurant, there is no reason to have stacked dirty dishes in the basin. It shouldn't be so hard. My granddaughter had their tortilla soup but like me, couldn't make herself add any toppings. They looked like they'd been there all day. This was my first visit to Gadzooks in Gilbert, but I had been to the downtown Chandler location twice before it closed. They are known for their oven that melts all of your goodies on your tacos or enchiladas together in a ceramic bowl. You typically have a good choice of meats and vegetarian options as your filling, but on the night I dined here they were out of the bison (my first choice of protein) and the short ribs. I ended up ordering one green Chile pork and one chicken enchilada, topped it with cheeses, salsas, sauces, pickled onion and more. The enchiladas and drink already rang up to just under $20 so I bypassed a side (would have bought the spicy cornbread). For a better value, the lunch special is $15 for your entree, a side and a drink, which would save about $5 vs standard dinner prices. The meal didn't cook quite long enough in the oven because I didn't get any crisping of the tortilla, gooey melting of the cheese or hardening of the juices in the bottom of the bowl (just wetness). This took away some of the expected flavor profile. While the employees were friendly, they kept their iced tea behind the counter so I had to have them fill my cup up twice. I always like a blend of ~2/3 unsweet tea and ~1/3 sweet tea...but when the tea ratios are out of my control I just asked for half and half. The first time it was too sweet so my refill I asked for unsweet only. The interior is nice, spacious, well-lit and clean. Despite the parking lot for this complex was full with cars winding up and down every row looking for a spot, there was only one other customer in the store during primetime dinner hours. Clearly, Gadzooks is not the hot location in the Epicenter. Overall, my first experience at Gadzooks Gilbert was just okay. I was disappointed they were out of my first protein choices and my meal was not in the oven long enough. But it's not a complete dealbreaker as I could see myself eating here again in the future. read more

We came here tonight for date night. We both got 2 enchiladas and a side each. I got the bison and he got the chicken and beef. Both of them tasted good but a little less "good" than we remember from our first experience here. I also remembered and craved the cornbread side. I thought the side was dry this time and not as moist and flavorful as I remembered it to be, the price for the small serving was also a lot. The portion should be at least a bit bigger than a few bites in what seemed to be a condiment sized cup. I recently met a friend for dinner here on a Tuesday just before 6pm, and it wasn't too busy. I highly recommend the half & half tortillas - half corn, half flour. I like to get two enchiladas - one chicken and one bison, if it's available. Note: Bison comes with an up-charge ($1.25). The pork is great too. You have a choice between red sauce (smoky), green sauce, or Christmas sauce (red & green). Add some Asadero cheese & Chihuahua cheese, and always add cornbread in the bowl with the enchiladas so that it gets heated up too - trust me! After it's heated up in the oven for a few minutes, there are so many topping options. I love their jalapeño ranch, scratch-made crema, cotija cheese, and honey vinaigrette slaw. I devour the entire thing every time. It is so filling, but I'm still bummed when it's all gone. The cornbread alone is worth coming back for! I always like the option to choose my own fillings and toppings. The lunch special is a good deal because for $15 I was able to get the enchiladas, one side and a fountain drink. Unfortunately I found the black bean side too spicy for my liking, but I'm aware that I'm a spice wimp. For my enchiladas I chose the half corn/half flour tortillas and found those to be good. I liked the chicken meat but found the beef filling to be nothing special and pawned that enchilada off on my husband. The green sauce was a good choice for me (spice wimp) as it had good flavor but wasn't overly spicy. I did like that you could add items to your dish like cotija cheese or crema. While I'm not sure I'll return to Gadzooks, I did appreciate the very nice, helpful guy who explained the choices and ingredients to us while we ordered. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a few years and now that there is one not far from home I decided it was time. The concept is like Chipotle, you build you own meal. In this case its enchiladas, tacos, nachos, salad or soup. My friend and I both had enchiladas. There is an option for their specialty tortillas which are half corn half flour. They also offer an all corn tortilla. We both did the specialty tortilla, one stuffed with beef short rib and the other stuffed with shredded chicken. I elected for half green half red sauce and both cheeses. After that they put them in a hot oven to bake. After taking them out you can add additional toppings. We both had honey vinaigrette slaw. I added jalapeno ranch and cotija on top as well and my friend did crema and cotija. I also got the chips and guacamole (per a suggestion from another review). These came out piping hot as expected. It was a totally new flavor experience. With the honey slaw, and jalapeno ranch added.. it was delicious! My friend enjoyed theirs as well! The really good things to note, the chips and guacamole! Yup these are what tortillas are supposed to be like! The guacamole was similar to chipotles. The service! The guy that helped us was really helpful! He genuinely was happy to answer questions and I had to know what was and wasn't spicy cuz I am a wimp. The food is another thing to note. It was really really delicious! Some additional take aways, the cost is a bit steep for fast casual. Two orders of enchiladas, chips and guac and no drinks was $32. The side of guac was small, real small. The portions are big but if you aren't a big eater then you will need to take them home and enchiladas don't reheat the same. The slaw was soggy and the rest was mush. Still tasted delicious but not the same. They do offer a kids enchilada, which is one and that would be the way to go (if they let you) to not get too much food. I will definitely return but will order a little differently. Since I did a mix of meats and sauces I really didn't get the best idea of what each one tasted like. Obviously I could tell the difference between short rib and chicken but as for flavors go I think its best to order one meat and one sauce to get the best idea of flavor. We were really craving enchiladas and decided to give Gadzooks a try. Unfortunately, the experience was a big letdown.We placed a pickup order and not only did they get it wrong, but the food itself was extremely underwhelming.The enchiladas were soupy- like the red sauce was more watery and lacked flavor and The tortillas were so tough on the ends that they were impossible to bite into.To top it off, the "spicy cornbread" side for $3 came in a tiny cup and felt like a complete rip-off--not worth it in the slightest. I come to AZ annually to visit my in-laws, go hiking, and try tacos from as many different places as possible. I wasn't able to try anything here. I walked in, waited literally ten minutes while observing the staff chit-chatting with each other. I know they saw me because one of them filled up a few of the condiment trays along the food assembly line. I used to wait tables and know its a hard job, so I tried to be very patient. But once one of the staff looked right into my eyes and then proceeded yapping in the back with her coworkers, I decided enough was enough and I walked out. I've worked hard and thankless jobs before. It sucks. You pick and choose your spots. But you didn't leave customers hanging. Bad choice. Probably explains this place's poor rating despite a very tasty-sounding menu that I really wanted to experience. I won't bother with that again. If you want tacos and are in this area, walk another 300 yards to Backyard Taco. Yes it's a chain but they're SUPER NICE and very focused on ... actually selling food to their customers. After thinking about it many a time, I finally tried Gadzooks. I've always been intrigued by the idea (who doesn't love enchiladas and soup) as an alternative to my usual fast-casual places. When we first walked in, I was really excited and kicking myself for not coming earlier because they had corn chowder (my favorite soup) and they had the ability to add an egg (my favorite add-on). The folks behind the counter were friendly and explained our options and the process very clearly. Unfortunately, despite the above and the restaurant's popularity, the food fell flat. I explained I was hoping she could provide more information about the items than just their name - like what was the flavor like and she again acted very annoyed and barely said anything. "Mild salsa is zesty, hot salsa is spicy". Gee. Thanks. Ok how about some chips & guacamole? "Nope we're all out." Ok. Next I ordered a bowl of Tortilla Soup they seemed to have plenty of that. Once we got to our table I started eating it and it tasted like pure salt & pepper. The worst tortilla soup I have had in my life. No cream, no chicken, no flavor, just corn, salt pepper broth, carrots and celery. I took the bowl back up and asked to worker if the soup was missing some toppings like, you know, tortilla chips or something and she said "we're all out of those." Gee. Thanks. If they happen to know the answer they're way too high to be able to formulate words at a volume loud enough to hear. The only thing you will hear is the manager yell from the other side of the restaurant that the guy put too much cheese on your nachos? Too much cheese on nachos? Ok pal. Want a water to drink? Be prepared to get a 3oz cup instead of a regular sized one, why? Who knows! Don't even think about asking for extra napkins either, 4 is plenty for TWO bowls of nachos that you eat with your fingers. The napkin burglar must've hit this place recently because they hold the napkins hostage back there. Overall, the nachos were good and I like the dual layering but kinda insane to charge $17 for nachos and skimp me on cheese? Cost is like $2.30 for the bowl. Love Gadzooks, been going for years to their Phx location and thrilled they opened this one closer to me. Location is in Agritopia near Air Guitar. My favorite is their tacos and nachos but sometimes a good ole enchilada is a must have. Custom made to order, I recommend the 50/50 (corn/flour) tortillas. But you can get straight up corn if that is your jam. Their proteins are fantastic, maybe some Bison, chicken or beef. I love their cornbread in a taco or on my nachos or if doing an enchilada (spinach/mushroom) yum!!!! Go with both sauces and load up on those condiments, like the pickled red onions, the slaw and make it a party. I'd probably give 3.5 stars if possible. Mostly due to the fact that the toilets were gross (soon after opening which is inexcusable), and the food being not great value. That said, after eating the enchilada combo with the included side, I'm pretty full. For $15 including he drink, it isn't horrible.
