I made a reservation 2 weeks ahead of time, arrived early and we waited for our table was ready. Taken to the table and not enough chairs and then we added to the table with more guests. They provided an additional table and even slower service. We were sat at the table around 1915 we received appetizers at 2000 and those dishes were removed by myself 2050. I addressed my concerns about the service and things were sugar coated. Needless to say the service got worse. It's 2100 and no dinners have been served at this table. My family almost lost our mother last year and this was a very special occasion for us. Sadly disappointed. I paid a fortune to be treated like a freed slave with my family. I'm very sad about this. Served by edge and woman with over 20 years of tenure at the restaurant his demeanor was lovely and his service was excellent. We got the pepper bread with olive oil that's Complementary when you eat here. That by itself is to die for. Both the kids ordered a kids item off the menu and me and the hub shared a fried dinner menu item. This is a date night/family night or just the best restaurant to visit in Galveston in my opinion. As a vegan customer in a group of seafood loving friends, I was very nervous to eat here. The menu had no vegan options listed, so I was prepared to order the Greek salad without cheese. One of the best meals I've ever had! Got the fresh oysters, complimentary bread, lobster spinach dip, the red snapper Michael, and very good cocktails. This place was absolutely wonderful! What I truly loved about this place was the history! From the storm of 1900s, to historic fires, storms, and events, this place some sort of memorabilia about it. There were so many pictures and it was wonderful just being able to read a lot of it. We were seated immediately and the waitress appeared almost instantaneous. I loved that part! For an appetizer, we ordered a shrimp cocktail, crab claws, and a soup of the day, which was poblano cream soup. Let me tell you, EVERYTHING MELTED IN MY MOUTH. The shrimp was so fresh, the soup was hot and creamy, and the claws were crispy and delicious. I'm telling you, try it all! I also ordered a cocktail and I believe it was the Voodoo, but I'm sorry it wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be, a little too hard and too sweet. But I'm happy to try the mijita next time! For dinner I opted to go with the grilled shrimp and grilled vegetables. The food was delicious, but I do have to say the presentation could have been a little better on the shrimp. The red snapper was delicious however and the presentation was nice! For dinner, we had the chocolate cake and a glass of milk. Lord, that cake was a bit too decadent for me and there was a little bit too much chocolate and not enough cake, for my liking. We didn't have reservations so we put one in but the wait was fast and the front hostess station was so kind and nice! it was our first time and the waiter (Otilo) explained introducing the dishes and his serving us was excellent. The wife and I absolutely love this place. And coming from foodies, that is a high compliment. To the people who poopoo this place because it is a "tourist trap" or "it is just a trendy place to go" I say bollocks to that. The reason you come here IS because it has been here since 1911. It is dark with a seafaring theme (except the bathrooms...we will get back to this) and the smell of the seafood wafts through the dining room. And it is HUGE. I have eaten here I don't know how many times, but have never eaten in the same quadrant of the place twice. Crabmeat Cheesecake. Yes. You read that right. Get this. Consume the goodness. Ask for extra of the roux sauce they use on top. Chop. Dunk. Eat. Smile. My personal favorite is the fried platter. Fried skrimps, catfish, seasonal catch (luckily for me it was oysters when we went!!!) and...stuffing balls...no these are not hushpuppies...they are like hushpuppies but on steroids...with mini-shrimp inside. ORDER EXTRA OF THESE!!!! Eat the whole platter. Loosen your pants a little. Smile. Be glad you came here. As promised...the bathrooms. I guess they recently renovated them because they are GORGEOUS...but modern. We went to Gaido's on South Main in Houston several times a year when I was growing up. It was an "oilfield hangout" in the 70's and 80's. When it closed we went to the Galveston location a couple of times every summer until about 20 years ago when it went down hill, way down hill. Huge disappointment for my aging and ailing mother-in-law. Have heard good things about it lately and as my cancer seems to be in remission we drove down for lunch. Holy smokes! I hadn't been here in years! All I can say is "It has been far too long, old friend!" We got the Crab Cheesecake...yes...you heard that right. It is an appetizer and it was amazing! The crust is made of Graham crackers and almonds and the cheese part is made of Italian Ricotta and Crab meat. It is served warm with some sort of balsamic, reduction on top! Don't second guess yourself...just get it. You won't be sorry. We also got the Crab Stuffed Shrimp which were so good! My dinner partner who is a chef in her own right was thrilled. I ordered the Red Snapper with a pecan crust (off menu) with crabmeat on top and it was the best fish I have eaten in my life. Drinks-wise, I had the Voodoo which was the kind of drink that was so well balanced, you could have drunk 10 of them and not realized that you would not be able to get out of your chair. I showed restraint with one and loved it. My partner had the Sangria which was a concoction created by Amanda, the bartender, and we chatted with her on our way out...those Sangrias were incredible!! We were already full, so we got the Key Lime Cheesecake to go! We enjoyed every bit of this dinner! The highest compliments of the night go to Lucio, our waiter. He took the time to walk us through the menu, made incredible recommendations and made the night one to remember! Gaido is a restaurant for big parties. I came her with my family and friends after my graduation and we were seated comfortably. As we enter, we were greeted by the hostess and she kindly took our party to our table. After the waiter greeted us and took our orders, he gave us some complimentary bread. However we were a little shocked as why it took so long for the bread to arrive. It felt like along while before the bread arrived. This bread was so soft and fluffy and when you add the herbs and oil, it tasted amazing. As I continued to snack on the bread, the food took a while to get here. There were a few other big parties, but the restaurant was not busy and I did not expect it to take that long for the food to arrive. We waited almost over an hour before our dishes started to arrive. The crab cake and calamari is pretty delicious. The combination platter was mediocre. It came with the option of one side: parmesan tomatoes, wedges or asparagus. The rice was hard and there was nothing truly impressive about this dish. The fish to me was a little and dry. The other seafood was good. Some of my family got this dish also and had the same opinion regarding the rice. Beside this dish, some of my family dish did not excell. The gumbo was very salty and some of my family perfer their sides over their entree of their meal due to the rice. Checked in 30 minutes prior to reservation and STILL had to wait 15 minutes after reservation (in an empty restaurant) for the table to be set once our full party arrived. My boyfriend and I went tonight for our anniversary. We were not greeted until 15 minutes after we were seated, and i waited more than 20 minutes to get a water refill. The food took awhile but that was to be expected, it was decent food but I was a little disappointed since everyone on the island raves about this place. They did give us a free dessert that said "happy anniversary" on it which was very nice.
