Best Resturant on the sea wall. I made reservations through yelp and was not disappointed at all. The place opened their doors in 1911 and is the oldest Resturant in Galveston . We were seated quickly and our ordered taken just as fast. Tables with cloth tablecloths and attentive employees. Don't wear a t-shirt and flip flops, dress casual. It's a nice place. Was looking for the best and freshest seafood in Galveston so since their sign said "since 1911" I figured this place must be one of those historically good places. Plus, they had this cool looking giant crab on top of the building... no doubt to attract tourists. First off, we had a 30 minute wait for lunch, which I thought was a good sign since it was busy during non-peak hours. The interior is nice and classy with the employees dressed very nicely. Being by the beach however, they don't expect their customers to dress the same so at least you can go in casually. Onto the food - about the only reason this place got two stars is the fresh oysters. Very reasonably priced and delicious, no metallic tang or fishy smell like other places which are not so fresh. It was obvious the oysters were about as fresh as possible. However, after a long drive and this being our only meal of the day I was expecting a great seafood meal, namely some succulent crab. So scanning the menu about three times, I figured I must have missed the crab, but seriously it was nowhere to be found. I mean I was willing to pay for fresh seafood and I figured Galveston would be the place to get it. So I have no idea what that giant crab is doing on the building. It's like me having a giant cow on top of a restaurant and serving all kinds of meat except for steak. Made no sense at all. So my group and I opted for the combo meal which has scallops, shrimp, fish of the day, rice and vegetables. So here's where the stars get deducted: the scallops, although nice and plump, were borderline ice cold. The dirty rice, again cold, and hard - not fluffy like it's supposed to be. The shrimp - wow, salt overload! I had to choke it down with dry hard rice to overcome the saltiness, so yeah only like two of them was about all I could handle. The fish - mine was red snapper, the rest of the table had mahi mahi and ahi tuna. Again, temperature was a problem. All three fish were lukewarm, not hot off the grill like I deserve to get for $27 a plate. I was hoping to get gourmet seafood and I found myself yearning for a Red Lobster. If a chain restaurant outdoes you, don't dare call yourself great or gourmet. Gaido makes claims it can't live up to (at least no anymore). They have awards and articles plastered all over the wall but to me it seems like nothing more than sad reminders of what this place might have been. This day and age, I can't see what the fuss was ever about. A quick look around the dining room, I observed a lot, I mean a lot of old couples, probably in their 60's to 70's. I've always had a great experience here, and I've noticed that 99% of the time most other members of the dinner party show signs of regret from what they ordered.. there's a method to my madness when i eat at any high-end seafood joint... so here's some words of wisdom, and either take it or leave it: First, have a conversation with the waiter with an understanding that fishing conditions change every day - some things on the menu can be fresher than others! I ask his/her suggestions for the freshest GULF catch - just go with the flow! also, like almost all fish, there's good ways and bad ways to prepare it... (they have ~10 ways to cook any type of fish...Gaido's: scale that down!!)... what do you do? ask the chef! in most cases, it normally ends up looking like their daily special... whatever it may be, i hit a home run every time. So, dine here with an open mind, and just go with the flow. (last meal: blackened red snapper with jumbo lump crap topping... delicious!!) A word of advice to management - scale down the menu a bit, and stick with the resources right out the front window.. the gulf of mexico. scale back the 'preparations' guide, and offer a short list of suggestions PER the type of fish ordered! I'm rating them 3/5 stars - because i do believe that if it shows up on the menu, it should be top notch quality, and i don't need to dance around it in order to have a good experience. Fantastic service and food! We made reservations late and got a 9:15 time slot. We spent time before enjoying the beautiful weather but we were ready for dinner at 8. We went over just to see if they could accommodate and they did! We sat at this huge table and the waitress was the best!! We started with the shellfish tower. It comes with oysters, crab, shrimp. And Crab salad. We made the kids all try something they never ate before (mainly oysters). Everyone for the most part seemed to like it. We then got this amazing warm bread with oil and herb! Yummmmm. Our food came out shortly after all of that. I got the crab cake stuff shrimp, my son got kids fettuccine Alfredo but we added shrimp. We both LOVED ours. Others in the party got the shrimp puces and they were too sweet for their tasting. The baked tomato with cheese it came with was heavenly! Fried catfish and the fries!!! Those fries were huge! Mojitos were the best I've had in a long while. To end the night we ordered their famous pecan pie (crunch) and it was amazing!!!! The brownie sundae was serious for any chocolate lover! Open since 1911 the building has survived many storms, the food quality on the other hand is missing on every level. We'll blame the hurricanes not the cooks or the managers for poor food quality. We suggest they scale down the menu until they can hire a quality chef and prep cooks.The waitstaff is trying to survive,our heart goes out to them. We made a reservation, showed up 30 mins early and were sat immediately. Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. In matter of fact, the entire staff there impressed me with their hospitality. The Cracker-meal coated calamari steaks and the bread before dinner was very good. Hard to stop eating even. I was already half full when we put in our dinner orders. As far as dinner is concerned: For the price, it wasn't worth it. Let's just say it lacked luster. And even more importantly flavor. Maybe I should have gotten something a little less fancy. I am a BOI, and this place is historic. The giant Crab on the roof that scares little children and makes tourist always ask the question.... Is that Real ???? Yes its known as the best seafood in Galveston. I find it not true. But you need to eat here for the History !!!! One hint... The small bowl of hot water with a lemon floating in it is NOT to eat or drink..... People its a finger bowl to wash with at the table. I would recomend seafood platters or fish of the day. We were in Texas for an event and live in So Cal. So happy we found Gaidos because the food was incredible! Best seafood we have had in a long time. The BBQ oysters were amazingly good and so was the tile fish I believe it was called. Our server was fantastic, very kind, went above and beyond. We enjoyed how she recommended dishes to try and she was right, they were all extremely good. We especially appreciated how our main dish was not flooded in sauces which can ruin a meal as it was just right. 5 star service! even the ambience and cleanliness of the restaurant deserve 4 stars the food is just mediocre. not sure who cooks or what recipes they follow, but it's over seasoned(Old Bay is my guess) and bland in presentation. i ordered a grill combo plate. my shrimp were not cooked to doneness and the scallops were MICRO MINI. the fish was so saturated in aforementioned seasoning that i could not tolerate it after the first bite. i had a cup of the gumbo and my plate which cost me $40=(tax & tip incl) disappointment read more

If I were reviewing this about 10 years ago, I would easily give it 5 stars. However, since I went away to college and have come back over the years, this place continues to disappoint and fails to live up to it's once fantastic reputation. Food is delivered cold, service has dwindled (although that may be just because I've gone on busy nights) and the food really doesn't live up to what it once was. The last time I went, was xmas eve last year 07 with a big group of family. We all ordered different things, and not one of us was really all that satisfied and of course we switched around plates and found no improvement. Sadly, Landry's or Willy G's would have been a better choice as the food is good, but not as high priced as Gaido's. It's too bad, because Gaido's used to have the very best seafood. Tourist trap. Been a few times since I was a child a many decades ago and the food is the same. Overpriced and really, not good. We took relatives here and were so embarrassed. The restaurant were out of menu items and just switched them without telling us. Stuffing balls...who pays this kind of price for something that is inedible. Service was subpar...and we dined at 2pm. I knew better but relatives said everybody at their convention was saying how good this place was..so, even knowing better we took them. Last time...even relatives were disappointed. So, this place has been in Galveston for something like 90 years and I just made my first visit this past week! First misconception: The sign says "Casual Seafood" so I assumed this meant casual as in poboys, burgers, fried shrimp...well, they do have fried shrimp but this place is definitely not casual! My niece and I felt a little out of place in our swimsuit cover-ups but the staff didn't treat us any different! The waiter was excellent and the staff as a whole worked like a team. Second misconception: It's attached to a motel so the food can't be that good. I was wrong! From the bread and EVOO with spices they serve at every table, to the entrees we were both pleasantly pleased with our meals. I had the Shrimp Peques, which are bacon wrapped shrimp with Monterrey jack cheese and jalapeno and is served with rice and a side of your choice (I chose steak fries with a side of ranch...it's a slight addiction I have). The shrimp were ginormous and the honey barbeque-esque dipping sauce was a perfect pair to cool off the spice of the jalapeno. My niece had the chicken fettuccine and she nearly ate every bit of it and she's never had chicken fettuccine before (blame her picky mother)! The only downfall to the meal was that I never got the appetizer that I longed to try. They brought out our main dishes before the appetizer ever arrived and after we began digging into the food, there was just not enough room to eat the appetizer too so I canceled the order. But for your info it was a crab cheesecake, similar to a quiche...it sounded and looked really good though! Guess I'll just have to make another visit back to give it a try! read more

I wanted to like you, Gaido's, I really did. Maybe I'm spoiled. Maybe I'm a seafood snob, but growing up with the bounty of the Pacific Ocean makes it hard to thoroughly enjoy seafood anywhere else. Gaido's has been around for almost a hundred years, and upon entering the restaurant it kind of smells like it has been around a hundred years. It's not a bad smell, just, a little musty with the faint aroma of fish. We had driven down from North Houston to Galveston for the first time and we had heard the Gaido's was a must for our visit. We had reservations for the first seating, and the restaurant was basically empty. We were debating between the calamari or the fried oysters as starters. Our server said the calamari would serve four, so we decided to go for quantity instead of four oysters. When the calamari arrived, I wondered where the rest of it was. Did he mean it was meant to serve for mice?! Other than the size being other than expected, the calamari was very good. Tossed in arugula, tomates and lemon zest, it was very fresh. Onto the entrees. I had read on Yelp about the Captain's or Admirals menu. With the Captain's menu, you were able to choose from some selected entrees. You receive soup/salad, half your selected entree and a dessert. The Admiral's entitles you to a full entree plus the soup/salad and dessert for $9. I went with the Captain's portion, and tried to order some entrees but each time was told "That's not part of the Captain's." Ok.... So I went with the stuffed shrimp. Our server suggested the stuffed shrimp instead of the shrimp carbonara. Next time I'm listening to my own advice. The shrimp were overly breaded. Kind of like a hush puppy on a shrimp. My husband had the snapper, cooked to perfection. Flaky, tasty, but not at all how it was described. Something about a Parmesan crust, which did not seem to manifest itself at all. Dishes tend to be less than aesthetically appealing when it comes to presentation. A few spears of asparagus tried to gussy up the plate to no avail. I had the pecan pie for dessert, my husband has the crème brulee. Good, not great. Next time we stop in Galveston, I'm glad Gaido's has been crossed off our list because I don't plan to come back. As we left we noticed the restaurant was overflowing. So if you do decide to come, come early. As we left the restaurant, I couldn't help but sing Public Enemy in my head.... Gaidos' reputation of inconsistency rang true when we went last weekend. Our appetizers were both quite good. The iced shrimp were fresh and came with a decent remoulade sauce that contrasted the cocktail sauce nicely. The wedge salad with their chunky bleu cheese was awesome, that dressing is something you have to try. My entree was the pecan crusted redfish with corn relish. The fish was fresh, the pecan crust crispy and tasty, and the relish was a good topping for the dish. My wife got the deep sea scallops. These were about the worst, puniest scallops I've ever seen. Despite being "deep sea scallops," these were small even by bay scallop standards. They didn't taste any better than they look too. They were overdone, tough, and all i could taste was char. We both took a couple of bites and pushed them away. It would've been a 4 star experience if the scallops were even edible, but I was torn between giving 2 or 3 stars. The reason for the 2 stars is the service or rather lack of staff. When we walked in, 4 of us, on a Wednesday evening about 7 PM, we were told there would be a :45 wait. There were plenty of tables open. My pet peeve is when a business can't hire enough help to staff their capacity. Once we got seated, the waiter was attentive although we had to flag him down a couple of times. His trainee spoke English with a heavy Asian accent making him hard to understand. I have no complaints on the food. It was as good as the last time I ate at Gaido's. So, if not in a hurry, the food is great and the service is ok. read more

Disappointed. I used to eat there whenever I visited Galveston- about once every two or three years. I remembered Guido's as a great place for seafood- not today. The charbroiled oysters were expensive but very good and the Greek Salad was good. The Gumbo, however, was very disappointing. It was the consistency of pea soup, had a total of two very very small shrimp in it, and tasted like bland brown gravy. There was no hint of other seafood or okra. The Shrimp and Grits were creamy and had chunks of yellow and green squash. It was sort of sweet, definitely not savory and not tasty. I hope they go back to more traditional southern recipes for both of these dishes. I will give it another try but will have to order fried seafood next time. Our family has been celebrating our special days here for years, 16th B-Days, Proms, 21st B-Days, Graduations, Anniversaries and almost any time one of us got to pick. We drive from Houston to dine at Gaido's .... But our last visit had us so disappointed, from beginning to end ... Just not what we have come to expect from Gaido's ... First, we waited over 30 min. for a table, which is not normally bad for Gaido's But there where many empty tables and yet they had several parties waiting. We had several tables around us that did not have anyone seated, for the time we were there. One of the appetizer we ordered the Creole Crawfish Fondue, it was sent back, it was a bowl of gue ... Looked bad and tasted like it had been made the day before, rubbery crawfish. The others were ok, nothing to note or write about. We all thought, ever place has an off day and waited for our salads .... I had ordered a Caesar salad, which I had had there last time I was there, not too long ago. That time it was a work of art .... Whole leaves of romaine lettuce, shaved parm. house made croutons and their dressing ... It was wonderful and exactly what I had expected. This time a plate of Luke warm romaine lettuce with croutons and dressing, Just wast not up to the Gaido's standards ... I was ready to leave ... But the others were hungry and did not want to go wait in another line. The only plate that was good was the fried seafood plater, which you can get almost any chain seafood joint. I had the stuffed flounder, it was all right but again, not what I expected. My wife's plate was picked at but not much better, Our guests just looked at us and said, this place is not as we had described. The service was also a disappointment, not the white table cloth level we have had before. They seemed to be high school girls, that could not even keep out glasses filled. I waited several days to post this, to try and put the experience behind us ... But for the price, it should have been better. I should have thought about it when I saw they only had 3 1/2 stars. I asked the girl waiting on us if the restaurant had been sold lately, She said she was not sure, but she didn't think so. If the Gaido's still own it, they need to see what's going on in their Galveston institution of the past. Ahh...well this place is a sprawling ordeal that smells as old as it is. The Atmosphere has a sort of a classy feel, i guess to match the prices...which are...nothing short of REALLY EXPENSIVE. But it doesn't matter in the least, for in this place you will find the freshest most delicious seafood anywhere on the gulf coast. And I think there would be anyone here to argue that. More about the food... Pretty much everything here is good...right down to the pre meal shrimp gumbo, which makes your eyes water just looking at it. Their fish is never frozen and always less than 2 days old, They get a shipment of premium gulf snapper which they only take the finest filets, this in addition to their numerous fish of the day...which get the same treatment as the snapper... The service...wow we got a waiter that was either heavily paid...heavily tipped or just really attentive and friendly, super nice...not much else to say about that.. WARNING! DANGER! CUIDADO! BEWARE OF EATING LARGE PORTIONS OF THE SAPPORITO STYLE FISH! IT IS EXTREMELY STRONG, LADEN WITH CHUNKS OF RAW GARLIC...IT WILL NOT AGREE WITH YOU! Unfortunately the family traditions live on with its 100 year + celebration reflected in it's boring unimaginative menu, grandma's decor and a drunken galloping Chef's quality that would make Julia C vomit on her worst night. Had dinner here last night as part of a work trip. Loved the service. Had a Caesar salad that was amazing. A lot of the menu has gluten free options and the server was adamant about making sure my food came out correctly. I don't normally do seafood, but I almost was tempted to have some. When you walk in, this smell hits you- it's not fishy in the way you think, but a rich flavor profile is obvious with the aroma. There's definitely a lot of history to the place. We were visiting Galveston for the day (Tuesday March 31) and was recommended this place. The first things we noted were the giant crab on the roof and it's one of the older restaurants on the main drag. David was our server and he took good care of us. Portions are large - large as in generally what I'd eat for two dinners. He also told us desserts are made in-house, so we concluded our mid-afternoon lunch with the pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. I came here with family for dinner as my husband had gone there when he was little. First, let me start with the positives... The ambiance of the restaurant is nice but it does not fit with how the consumer base is. The food was good. We got the calamari for the appetizer and stuffed shrimp, combo platter, crawfish asiago. Now the negatives. We were moved multiple times upon arrival (made reservations). Our waiter, Raymond, was.... awkward. He made every detail about the preparation of the meal, behind-the-scenes of the restaurant. Of course, the whole time there was sales starting with the whole menu, a cookbook to buy, and dessert. Raymond kept making weird remarks how we weren't going to get dessert. He made me feel awkward about ketchup for my wedge fries. He tried so hard to be helpful and make small talk, but it made our whole dining experience so uncomfortable about our kid, etc. it was so, so awkward. Gaido's, you just aren't that great. I'm basically just giving 3 stars instead of 2 because of the island-history factor. By now I've tried you enough times to know that I should just stick with your little brother Casey, who has a better selection of better food at better prices. I've been to Gaido's a handful of times in the last decade. Two of those visits were work-banquet type things with limited menus (I worked for Galveston ISD up until summer 2009), and I am not grading based on those out of fairness (especially since there was a grilled fingernail in with my grilled chicken one of those times). I've gone for regular dinner twice, once with my mom pre-Ike and once with my now-husband post-Ike. Both times there was a wait of at least 20 minutes to get seated even though the restaurant was basically empty of patrons. Do they only have like one waiter or what? Both times the menu was small and prices were too expensive for the items offered. The only reason my mom and I went the first time is because I wanted fried soft-shell crab and at the time it wasn't offered on Casey's menu (I believe it is now). Crab was good but really expensive, and what I liked best about the meal was the complimentary peppery cheese bread. My second visit was kind of a celebration of me getting a job in Central Texas so getting to move away from Galveston (I love love love the island, but after losing everything in Ike, didn't have it in me to stay). The same peppery cheese bread was served but this time it was too dry, so I didn't like it. My now-husband and I noticed the menu saying that the entrees didn't come with sides, and we hadn't seen any appetizers on the menu that piqued our interest, so we ordered some sides so that we wouldn't just have fish and crab by themselves. Well, lo and behold the dinners did come with small portions of sides (I remember that his came with some parmesan tomatoes and that both of ours came with coleslaw, not sure what else I got), so we had just wasted money ordering extra food. Kinda low, Gaido's. Also, I'm a salt freak, but everything was too salty for me (my now-husband agreed). That's saying a lot ... I prettymuch need to salt everything I get at restaurants usually, but the tomatoes were crazy-salty and so was my softshell crab (I got it sauteed that time, and boy was it also crazybuttery). Service was crappy ... our waiter was an older fellow who didn't seem very interested in providing us good service. Maybe we didn't look fancy/rich enough, I dunno, but we did actually live on the island at the time, and might have been repeat business if we were treated better. In short, it's not worth it. As a reccomendation from.out Bartender from LaCarafe in Houston, we visited Gaidos while in Galveston for seafood. We were there for lunch on a Saturday and had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. The ambiance is nice, dark wood, typical of a seafood restaurant. For starters we had the crab cake. It was great. Full of crab, not alot of breadcrumbs. Perfectly crispy on the outside. And NOT overly salty, which is what I feel I typically see in crabcakes. I had the shrimp stuffed with jalapenos and cheese, wrapped with bacon. It was COVERED in a sweet brown sugary sauce that ruined the dish for me. I am not a fan of sweet things normally, but can tolerate a bit. This was rediculous. You could not taste the shrimp or stuffing through the sauce. It was just too much. My boyfriend had the pecan crusted fish. It was far better than my dish. We also had the blue cheese grits. Much like my shrimp, they went overboard of the blue cheese. It was like blue cheese with a hint of grits. It seems this place cannot seem to balance their flavors. It is with a heavy heart that I have to award Gaidos a 2 star rating. I have grown up on the island and thus am a HUGE supporter of the local establishments, but I refuse to fabricate the dining experience here. The restaurant ambiance is beautiful. Ocean views, crisp white tablecloths and linens, candlelight, and servers in tuxedo vests and bow-ties - very nice. The food however is a completely different story. Well I will amend that statement by saying that the entrees are nothing special. The Salads and appetizers are worth wild. But after the starters on the menu is where the buck stops. My last visit was with my family and both my parents being solid Gaidos fans, even had to agree that it just was plain bad. The entrees were cold, the fish tasted like the sea (fishy and not in a good way) and the finishing sauces that you choose to compliment your cut of fish were all versions of the same thing, butter flour, cream, cheese. Not very creative or flavorful. The service was good, but not great. Our server was trying to be smooth and it was just coming off as overly arrogant. He spoke to us about his favorite entrees, and appetizers selling them to us only to further find out that they were out of them for the evening...weird. I was kept waiting until the end of my appetizer to receive my glass of wine that I had ordered immediately upon my arrival. And then he forgot about the tables coffee orders, which at that point no one really cared about, we just wanted to get out. The food and service is way over priced for what it is, which is a shame because it could be revamped by a few tweaks to the menu. My picks: ~Jazz Martini - its absolutely massive and nicely paired with lime, avocado and cocktail sauce at the bottom of the martini glass that the jumbo shrimp are displayed in. It is HUGE and can eat like a meal. ~ Soup Trio Lobster bisque, gumbo and soup of the day Nice sampling, delicious ~Wedge Salad Iceberg Lettuce "Wedge" with Crumbled Bacon, Diced Tomato, Purple Onion and homemade Chunky Bleu Cheese - LOVE the textures and colors of this salad. It too eats like a meal. ~ Deluxe Oyster Combination Platter (when they're in season) All in all, you can have a nice experience here and get out unscathed about the food and the amount of money you will shell out, just don't go in with the intention to wow your dinner partners if its your first rodeo. read more

To start the night out we went to the bar. The bartender sniffed the shaker before making my drink. I must say that my drink was delicious. With a reservation we still had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. Once we were seated, we shared a calamari appetizer which was quite good. Nice portion size. For dinner, I had a grilled plate of shrimp, scallops, and catfish. My husband ordered at fried platter of shrimp, catfish, a shrimp and crab puffs. His food was a lot better than mine. The food was extremely fishy tasting. Not it a good way! Maybe thats a Houston Seafood thing. Idk. This was the first time I'd had fresh seafood here.The best part of my meal was the rice pilaf and mozzarella tomatoes. At these prices I'm sure we can find a place that has better food. read more

This place sucks me in almost every time we visit. I always think, maybe they'll be better and they're not, just more expensive. The drinks- the Bloody Mary was all spice and no kick The Ravioli- you get 3 raviolis then they put 2 giant dried out chicken breasts on top. Made no sense Fried stuffed shrimp- zero flavor Shrimp Peques- how can you go wrong with bacon wrapped shrimp? Burn the bacon, that's how The crawfish Alfredo was missing Alfredo. From the appetizer to the dessert, the food was amazing and the service impeccable! We started with the bread and olive oil, grilled oysters, then onto fettuccine with crawfish, seafood combo, scallops and minestrone soup, and finished with bread pudding and cappuccinos. $30 redfish was delicious...but the size of my palm. $17 crab cake appetizer was AMAZING and worth every penny!!! $29 Crab stuffed shrimp with Parmesan tomatoes were delicious... $7 stuffed shrimp was mediocre... the stuffing was good but not too sure about the breading....tasted like a hush puppy... $6 add-on house salad was good but the best part about it was the ranch dressing (because there was only 1 very small cherry tomato and a bunch of mixed greens with croutons and 2 slices of red onion).....we will definitely be back!!! read more

Our Server Andrei is very good as his job. He informed us of the daily special, recommendations, and came back frequently to make sure we were doing alright and if we needed anything else. Ambiance is nice and fancy. A little louder than I wanted, but that's okay, it means people are having a good time! Food was great! The spicy poblano soup was AMAZING! I recommend the bowl (we shared it) - I would've liked my own bowl. Haha I had the grilled Salmon, rice & Parmesan covered tomatoes. Delicious! Bf had the blackened snapper with crab and bernaise sauce over the crabs, asparagus and rice. Also delicious, but I think mine was more flavorful. :) After dinner we ordered the "famous" pecan crunch (which is pecan pie)... it's not the best that we've had, but it was still tasty. Love the amount of pecans though! Lastly, they gave us two metal bowls (one person), and it was warm water with a slice of lemon for us to wash our hands! That was so cool!
