Exactly what you want from a diner! Good food and service and plus- live music! Would recommend!

My wife and I enjoyed a late breakfast here last Sunday. It was pretty busy at 1:30 pm, but we were able to be seated right away. Menu is pretty large with breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings all in one. There are plenty of meals not on the menu that are displayed on their screens, so make sure to take a look at those too. I had sausage gravy with hash browns and eggs, and my wife had an omelet with home fries and a side of grits. The sausage gravy was very bland with no flavor in the small amount of sausage or the gravy itself, but the consistency was perfect. It's not too thick or thin. I would not recommend the sausage gravy. Both kinds of potatoes were well cooked with some crispy pieces. Service was a little absent, and when we finally flagged our server down, she said, "Just grab me when I walk by." After that, we flagged her down as needed, and service was fine. The manager did stop by, which is always a nice touch. Overall, we enjoyed our breakfast and we will return. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch. The place is clean and the staff was slow but friendly. The menu offered a large selection of choices. I chose the taco salad with chicken. What a mistake. It was served in a small bowl filled with thin strips of romaine, a few slices of cucumbers, onion rings, and small slices of avocado. The bowl Was framed with 6 stale tortilla chips. There was a generous amount of chicken bits but they were dried and very salty. This is a nice place but they need to rethink some of their menu items. read more

The service was OK, but the food is absolutely terrible. Cold hot dogs and fries. Got the chili cheese dog and the cheese wasn't even melted. Very meh fries. Other people's food also looked really unappetizing. Maybe good for breakfast food, but we were there for lunch and nothing seemed worth coming back for. read more

This place had the best onion rings I've ever had anywhere ever. I also got the Greek burger which was delicious. My husband got the steak fajita omelet with toast. Coffee was smooth, if we're in the area again, we would definitely go back. read more

When You want breakfast for dinner I would recommend IHOP or Bob Evans but if you are looking for an alternative Gainesville Diner is there to help Ratings: Service 3/5: overall we get some nice servers Cleanliness 2/5: The walls are not great and they also have a random tv that doesn't work Food 4 1/2:Good Food. I've been to this diner several times as it's really the only one of its kind in the area. I've never been disappointed and find the food to be standard diner quality. It's consistent and what I'd consider greasy spoon but that's exactly what you expect and what I look for on a diner. Even with the change of management, I haven't noticed a difference in quality of food or service. I'm still able to get a table with ease and have had to wait only a couple of times. read more

The server was nice enough but the food was awful. Eggs florentine - frozen spinach, canned mushrooms, bland hollandaise, English muffins hard. Sausage gravy and scrambled eggs - eggs were SUPER dry, gravy was bland. Restaurant needs a deep clean. Really, this place was awful. The husband and I went in for a breakfast date and we were happy to find a basic diner breakfast menu. But, honestly, this place was just bad. I ordered an omelette with cheese, bacon and cooked onions. It was supposed to come with hash browns and toast. What wound up coming out was a cheese omelette with a few slices of bacon on the side. There were no cooked onions in my omelette, but there were some in the home fries, so maybe they added them there? Or maybe they're already supposed to be in there? Who knows. The server was clueless about what I ordered or what mistakes where made. I also had to ask several times for creamer for my coffee. My husband ordered pancakes. They came out with butter on top and sat for quite a while... while the butter melted I'm pretty sure we were waiting for syrup and waiting for The syrup and waiting. There was one server for the whole restaurant, and I'm sure she was fairly new. The cleanliness of the restaurant was questionable, and we won't be returning. read more

Great breakfast all day long...what more can you say. This please is truly no frills...but the staff is friendly and I've never had to wait. Today I got the tube melt with onion rings. Tune melt was great...onion rings not so much. All said and done I'll be back. read more

Man I really want to like this place. Having an independently owned diner/breakfast spot closer to home would be nice. We went this morning, my daughter and I. The feel of the place is unfinished. They had a couple of servers sort of milling around the front, but not really greeting customers. We were sat quickly, and greeted by a server quickly. Unfortunately the booth's seats were covered in crumbs. I do t mean just a small amount. And the ketchup lid was open and very messy. Seems like a small issue but it fed into the unfinished and untidy feel for the spot. I orders biscuits and gravy, which is my go to when checking out a new diner, and my daughter had French toast. The sausage gravy was unbelievably bland. And there was so much that you couldn't really try the biscuits. My daughter's French toast was decent, but also rather bland. And like others have posted, the bacon was obviously not pork bacon. I just wished that was noted on the menu, as we would not have ordered it. About the only highlight was the cute pinup looking waitress that ended up assisting us when our server disappeared. She was smiling, talking to customers, and was overall just pleasant and cute. I really wish this place well. We will try it again in a few months to see if it has made some progress because I feel that if they work on the food and service they could do well due to the location. But I won't be leaving Northside 29 any time soon. P.S. to the poster who mentioned that the bacon was not pork but either beef or turkey and "that speaks volumes in identifying ownership and eventually their entire customer base" please feel free to take your business elsewhere. Stopped in due to the generally positive reviews, but I would definitely not recommend going here. First off, the atmosphere is pretty terrible. The silence is almost deafening and is only broken by occasional kitchen chatter, all of which is easily heard since there is no music or even white noise. The walls were lacking decor and were even dirty from previous customers (ketchup and syrup stains). The restaurant has no character whatsoever. The food is "meh" at best. I had the Irish benedict, which included corned beef hash. The dish was somewhat tasty, and the corned beef hash was grilled nice and crispy, but I am pretty sure both the hash and the hollandaise were pre-made... the hash tasted no different from the canned variety. My lady had the waffle combo, which included eggs, hash browns, and sausage. The sausage was no different from the pre-cooked microwave type you find in the grocery store... overly salty and very dry. How hard is it to cook fresh sausage? Also, the coffee was very bitter. The service was okay. Our server was attentive, but he was the only one working the front of the house, so there was no one to greet or seat us. I have no idea how this place has an average of over 4 stars on reviews. It wasn't the worst experience ever, but I will not be returning. read more

Growing up in Jersey, I was excited to see that a diner opened in Gainesville. My family and I visited it tonight and we will definitely NOT be returning. My son ordered the breakfast special with French toast. The bacon was completely burnt as well as the extremely thin sausage patties. Not sure what has happened to this place. I have been eating here since it opened. It has steadily gone down. Today I placed an order for an omelet, sausage and home fries. I picked up my order and returned home. Upon opening my order I noticed there were no home fries. I called and informed them of the error. I was told that I did not pay for the home fries- it would be either home fries or sausage. (If I ordered it I want to pay for it). When I explained this to the lady on the phone she said well you didn't pay for it. Not I'm sorry we made a decision for you or I'm sorry period. So excited to have a real diner nearby! First, I wanted to respond to the reviewer who mentioned no pork on the menu. My husband had a western omelette this morning and I'm pretty sure the ham in his omelette came from a pig. On to the food, I had chipped beef gravy on toast and a side of home fries. Overall, we were pretty happy. Everything needed a bit of seasoning but that was easy to remedy with the salt and pepper on the table. We will definitely be back! read more

Update: Went back and they had fixed some of the issues and the food was delicious and at a good price. Still think they can use some more focus on the service aspect. I was looking forward to trying this place as we need another breakfast place in Gainesville. Friends were leaving and said the food was good but the wait was painful. We didn't even make it that far as the wait to just sit was crazy, and not because it was busy. They said they were short staffed at all positions. That short staffed after just recently opening? Didn't notice a manager or anyone who seemed to really be in charge other than a waitress who seemed to be trying. They don't seem to be well organized which is surprising as the owners I believe own the Marshal Diner too. Maybe will try again maybe after they figure this site out a little but you would think they would be ready for Sunday breakfast if you're a Diner! read more

We decided to try this place for breakfast. It was almost empty on a Sunday morning at 0930 and first impression was not good. There were 2 booths and one table with dirty plates on them and plenty of people standing around. We were seated at a table promptly but took a few minutes before any server came to take even drink order. We ordered our food and talked while we waited. I finished my coffee and then waited to get more. Finally just before the food arrived I did get my second cup. I ordered the western style omelet and biscuits with gravy and bacon. Keep in mind when you visit it is all turkey or beef. No pork. So the flavor is different than normal. My wife ordered blueberry pancakes. The food was very plentiful and good. We had no complaints there. All in all our experience was not bad. The place is new and will have some growing pains. If they pay attention to the little details they will do well here. We like going here but they get orders wrong frequently. Like the food and the people are friendly but there has been a couple of times when we dined in and the food was incorrect. Also NEVER order the food online for pick up. They will definitely mess up the order. Make sure you are checking the bags before leaving. This is a very busy place. Lot of regulars, us included. This place is Excellent. We were seated quickly, waitress was very timely in getting to us and throughout the dining experience. Plenty of seating. The price is awesome. Breakfast special with eggs, sausage, hash browns and pancakes is priced very competitively..sub $8.00. Most importantly the food was delicious!! Eggs were fluffy and flavorful. While many people are commenting on the breakfast ( and my son loved the French toast) I have enjoyed the Gainesville burger because the green peppers and onions are diced and well grilled, and all toppings were very generous. The food was good - no complaints there. I got a bacon cheeseberger, fries, and a soft drink. It's a little bit pricey, but you see the prices on the menu when you order so that shouldn't be a surprise. What was a surprise though was when the bill came and taxes and "fees" came to 17% of the total bill Virginia has a 6% sales tax and a 4% restaurant charge, so I asked "what is that extra 7% for??" I was told there's a 4.75% surcharge for using a credit card, and an additional 2% that he gave some convoluted explanation for "for inflation, when the cost of goods goes up and down" or something like that. I've never been to a restaurant that added a surcharge for using a credit card, and that other 2% should really be called a "padding the profit margin" charge. If you add a tip on top of that, your basically paying more than 30% in surcharges on ordering a meal, at a place that isn't that cheap to begin with. Sorry, I won't be going back again. read more

We are thrilled to find Gainesville Diner in our neighborhood! When I lived in Rappahannock County we would frequent the Marshal Diner. Same folks, same menu and wonderful that I can get a 'home cooked ' dinner when I don't feel like cooking. My favorite is the open faced turkey sandwich. Oven roasted turkey, real mashed potatoes and homemade mixed vegetables. So good! The four piece fried chicken dinner is good too. Crispy, crunchy with a hint of honey. All dinners come with soup or salad and the portions are generous. The fried chicken dinner has the soup/salad option AND comes with garlic bread. You get a lot for your money here. Add the fact that the servers are such nice folks who really do a great job, I suspect that this place will do well here in Gainesville. I certainly hope they are here to stay, as I was quite fond of visiting the other place when I lived further west. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. Service was fine, food was just nasty. Turkey sausage was hard, pancakes tasted like cornbread, bacon was nasty, home fries were cold and the biscuit was literally a KFC biscuit. Like they either stole the recipe or a bunch of biscuits from KFC. I can't make this up. Needless to say we will not return. Also they are not abiding by the COVID guidelines of skipping seats. Fine place for a quick meal--breakfast or lunch. Server was extremely attentive and our order was spot on. Slightly hard to find as they are waiting for their storefront signage to be installed but it's worth seeking it out in the middle of the strip mall. We'll be back! read more

Not the best experience today. First off I wanted to know what the soup of the day was and the waitress replies "I don't know if we have a soup of the day and says we have chili or French onion". I ordered the salad. The timing was off. No sooner did she bring my salad our meals came. I hate when that happens. Next disappointment was the chopped steak came out with mushrooms and so did the steak and cheese sub after we ordered no mushrooms. To top it off the mashed potato's were cold. ONLY WISH GORDON RAMSEY WOULD VISIT: Superior Customer Service! Outstanding Food Menu!!! Unbelievable; all homemade. Not often done; even at your local chain restaurants. Also impressed with them taking baked cooked orders. Tried a few and it reminded me of the cookies my Great Grandma made and the desserts served in New York. Saved me much time. Prices are definitely worth it. I should had bought more; but that was my mistake. I give this restaurant a 5+ (and I'm personally like GORDON RAMSEY; nobody get a 5+ but Gainesville Diner did in my opinion) Maybe I'll contact him to visit... read more
