We got married on the Carolina Girl Yacht and had Gala Desserts make Cake Pops for our wedding. We met with Jaclyn and she was wonderful and got to taste all the different flavors and they were all amazing. We had cake pops instead of wedding cake because it was a laid back wedding and this allowed people to have them and still walk around and not get stuck sitting down. Also, we saw these great nautical themed cake pops on pinterest and showed pictures to Jaclyn and we gave her the "anchor" paper and she put them on each individual cake pop. People loved them! I have been coming to Gala for about 4 months now, so this review is long overdue. I can't say enough great things about the desserts and the people here. I come in every Saturday afternoon to pick up desserts, yes that is more than one, for my weekly free/cheat meal from my diet plan. I look forward to my weekly drop ins. Everything I have tried is great. My favorites are the chocolate cake, gluten free coffee cake (I don't need gluten free, it's just that good), and the peanut butter cookies (also flourless). This is a really cute place that was much needed in Avondale. I went there on a date night with my husband. I always force him to take me DT to Kaminsky's to end our date with dessert, but we didn't want to fight the crowds so we gave this place a try. No more Kaminsky's for us! The desserts were amazing here! My husband doesn't even like sweets, but managed to eat an entire Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Cake on his own. I had a Chocolate mousse cake and it was heavenly! This is an outstanding place. We got the Bailey mousse cheesecake, chocolate chip cookie and blueberry cobbler. The cheesecake was probably the best I've ever had. It was sooooo scrumptious as well as the cobbler. The cookie wasn't that fantastic, I felt like it needed to be more sweet and chocolatey for a chocolate chip cookie. Apart from the chocolate chips, the cookie didn't really taste like a cookie and was a little plain. The only reason for not giving five stars is that we paid for a bottled water and upon returning to our hotel realized that it was never put into our bag. But the desserts we got were fantastic and definitely recommend!!! read more

Stopped in for lunch today and decided on the quiche of the day. Bacon cheddar. This was nothing like quiche. No egg consistency at all. Tasted like a biscuit cut into a pie shape with a very small amount of cheddar and not even a full slice of bacon. Served cold. Maybe they should stick to desserts. read more

And now, it's a disaster for the 3rd time. There is always one or another surly meathead server (where are you getting these people?), totally disgusted at having to serve. The cakes are old. And it was way too pricey all of a sudden for old cake and disinterested service. The hours are no longer reliable and the owner us never there. If you are thinking about using Gala Desserts for your wedding cake, DON'T! The owner is super sweet and the cake tasting was wonderful so I had no doubts at all. Well, to start off, the 3 grooms cakes were itty bitty and decorated horribly... And the wedding cake..... So so embarrassing. It looked like a cake we would have at a family gathering. The size, color, decor, stand, everything was wrong. The ONLY thing that was disappointing at my wedding was our cake so do yourself a favor and NEVER use Gala for your wedding. read more

Sweet and charming atmosphere with lots of homemade treats and delightful ownership. The shop is relaxing. The espresso is strong with soy options and the shop makes small, medium, and large treats. Recommended to anyone who wants coffee and sweet or savory snack, brunch, and dinner with a full bar! Wonderful and family owned place. read more

While vacationing in Charleston, we stopped in Gala Desserts for an afternoon pick-me-up. Love this place! I ordered the Amaretto Pear (drooling just thinking about it), and my friend got a chocolate chip cookie (boo her!). The Amaretto Pear was a Amaretto pound cake with poached pears & honeyed almonds on top. The server warmed it for me, and I could not eat it fast enough. There were several other groups enjoying desserts as well. I wished I could sample everything that passed my nose--without consequence, of course. read more

This place is absolutely adorable and the desserts look amazing but that seems to be all the good qualities this place has to offer. The night we went in, there was only one person on staff and she seemed quite frazzled with a couple hours to go before closing. We ordered the Almond Joy and the White Chocolate Lemon Ginger Cheesecake. The desserts were so bland! The flavors you expected from the name of the dessert we non-existent unless you based the name of your desserts solely on the garnish. Almond Joy you might expect chocolate, coconut and almond flavors but this dessert consisted mostly of a flavorless white cream with a thin layer of chocolate on the top and a sliver of almond as a garnish. The White Chocolate Lemon Ginger Cheesecake was so dense and the only flavor came from the raspberry drizzle the waitress added before plating. The cake was so dense and flavorless. Not sure if a dime size dollop of lemon curd on the top is worth mentioning in the name. The only redeeming quality was the crust that did actually have a hint of ginger in it. You can find so much better in Charleston...a foodies heaven so not sure how this place is still open. read more

OKAY Y'ALL BUCKLE UP FOR A WEIRD STORY. I'm just not sure what went wrong with this place. My girlfriend and I were looking for a nice little coffee place nearby so we checked yelp first... this place for some really great reviews. But I felt uncomfortable as soon as we walked in. I guess the owner's daughter was at the front counter. We later found out that she was only 11 years old (the owner was using that as an excuse to explain why it was the most awkward dining experience ever), even though that shouldn't matter at all. We sat down and the mom had to give this kid a pep talk before she came over to take our order. I asked for a breakfast sandwich and my girlfriend asked what the quiche of the day was, which turned out to be too much for the girl to handle and she said, "I don't know", and went back into the kitchen. Mom (owner) came to us at least 5 silent minutes later and asked us if there was a problem with the order??? I'm assuming the daughter had a panic attack in the back room or something, but we were reallyyyyy trying to make this woman and her daughter feel better about this super weird service. We said some kind words, ordered again, and waited 10 minutes for the WRONG quiche to come out. My sandwich never came at all. Then we needed silverware and the daughter was so freaking awkward that she scurried up behind me and had to wait for my girlfriend to give her a nod of approval before tossing some forks onto the edge of our table and dashing back behind the counter. The quiche tasted fine, but we didn't drink any of the water because both of our glasses had particles of who knows what floating around in them. At this point we just wanted to leave ASAP. So we go up to the counter to pay and the mom rang us up. THEN!... after we were ready to freaking leave... the daughter comes out from the kitchen and says, "mom they wanted something else to eat too". Like what????? She knew remembered that I asked for a sandwich and said nothing until now??? I was getting so uncomfortable at this point but my girlfriend handled everything thankfully because I literally didn't even know what to say. We declined politely despite many attempts by the mom to force this sandwich upon us now as we were leaving. The mom then said, "I guess there was just a mix up between you guys, my daughter is only 11 after all", which almost kinda felt like she had the nerve to put some of the blame on us for not asking for the sandwich in a way that her kid could process... the thought of which I'm not entertaining for a second because the restaurant was empty other than us. She literally had "one job", and couldn't make it happen. I felt like the whole thing from start to finish was weird, the service was unacceptable and the food was okay at best. Not sure what's going on with this place that seems to have decent potential, but it's clear that the owner needs to bring in some actual employees who can do the job. Didn't even end up staying for coffee, went down the road and got a cup at Dunkin lol. THE END. read more
