Wow, how cute & quaint over here in old Mt. Pleasant. Gala is located right on the Main Street (Pitt) with parking right outside if you are lucky enough to be able to grab a spot. It's the perfect cute location to meet up with friends for a morning coffee, lunch or afternoon pick me up's. The staff are super friendly and all about pleasing the customer. It has that neighborhood quiet vibe where everyone knows everyone. I love it. The Porch is perfect in the morning sun, because it's partially shaded and still not too hot. A perfect people watching spot. Obviously the building was a home at one time and now exudes a beachy coastal, southern vibe. They have a great menu. I had the Breakfast Sandwich on Ciabatta with bacon. It was made fresh and oh so delicious. Almost too many options to choose from. They also have WiFi, so the perfect spot to drink coffee & catch up on whatever. I love to support local, so definitely come check this place out. Adorable old House transformed into a cafe! The people who work here welcome you as if you're family when you walk through the door. There's plenty of seating space in a few rooms, as well as outdoors when the weather is nice. We went during Christmas and it was nicely decorated in a cozy, old fashioned way. Christmas music was playing, too. I truly felt like I was visiting a friend or family member! The cappuccinos are the best we've found in the greater Charleston area, and since Italy is our favorite place to visit, we're kinda picky. Our pastries were also delicious! Not overly sweet like we've found at a lot of bakeries. This feels very European; welcoming, cozy and everything tastes like it's made fresh. A gem! read more

We enjoyed this place today for a mommy daughter high tea. They were so sweet and attentive here. We each got to pick our own flavored tea and got our own little teapot. I chose a green tea with a side of honey. My daughter and her friend had a peach tea. We had blueberry scones with lemon curd and cream. For our tower we had chicken salad sandwiches, a salmon and lox thing, grilled cheese, and a pesto grilled cheese. Our treats were red velvet mini cupcakes, Rocky road brownies, and pecan tarts. I think my favorite out of all of it was the scone. The atmosphere was beautiful and lovely for a tea service. The customer service was on point. All of the food was delicious! We will be back for sure. I'd actually love to visit again for lunch and dessert one day. Absolutely gorgeous interior and nice service. The desserts looked beautiful and I'm sure are gourmet. The breakfast baked goods were meh. Coffee was okay. A stale cinnamon roll that was definitely at least a day old if not many days old I think should be advertised as such or half price. For a nice bakery I'd expect better. Guess I'm a fool for buying a baked good wrapped in cellophane so that's on me. I'd go back but would focus on their dessert case only. read more

I have actually never been to Gala Desserts. We are trying to plan a dessert party of 30-50 people and found Gala Desserts as an option for our party. I contacted the store via e-mail, and it took about a week to finally get a response. I am planning this party with another person (lives out of country) and I live out of state, so our ability to come and meet was pretty slim. We were originally planning in July, but the response to meet on a Saturday with plenty of advance notice (a month), was that she travels a lot in the summer with her family or has a lot going on and was not sure that she could meet. She said she would be in touch closer to the date. Never heard back. Our plans ended up changing to August, so again, I contacted the owner and told her when we would be coming. Again about a week's time to get a response...what do you know, the same type response, I'm not sure that I can meet and will be in touch later. I get a response on a Thursday night prior to us coming in stating she could not meet and suggested other times during the week and that the menu is attached for us to choose from. The point is, we are planning a large party and we would like to meet in person to discuss options - on the menu or off the menu, what can and cannot be done, and the fact that we are traveling in from overseas and over borders means nothing to this owner. That's fine if you want to have a life outside of your shop, but you then either need to make the decision to not do parties or hire someone part time to handle meeting with people at any time rather than just times that is only convenient to your life. I could not and would not recommend Gala for parties and will not ever be stopping by when I'm in town. Horrible business practice and responses. read more

Went there for tea on my birthday and was slightly disappointed. I have done so many teas and all my experiences have been overwhelming. I was not overwhelmed here. My scones were a little dry and came with icing on them (never experienced that before). Our server said, "yeah, I know. It's the owner's preference." People should be told this when booking a reservation. Also, the tea tray with goodies was set up already (also a first). How long had it been at our table before we arrived? Certainly, it doesn't give the impression of making things "fresh." I did enjoy the sandwiches, though I thought there were too many sweet items. read more

Gala desserts is a great addition to Avondale/West Ashley. Recently, I decided to head to Gala after dinner with a friend for some dessert and beverages. Gala has a dessert case with 10-12 choices, which you can also get with a side of ice cream. They also have a menu of coffee drinks, as well as cocktails, spiked coffees, and a few tapas items. Neither of us tried any tapas, but they were discounted for Happy Hour, which is 4-7 every day, including Saturday. I looked on their Facebook and saw a picture of a really delicious hot chocolate with butterscotch schnapps, so that is what I ordered. My drink did not disappoint- it was delicious! The drink wasn't overly alcoholic, but it was sweet with lots of whipped topping on the top, real whipped topping and not the fake stuff. My friend had a peanut butter dessert as well as some decaf coffee. The staff kept her coffee refilled and offered her a box for the rest of her dessert. The desserts can definitely be shared, which makes Gala a great place for a group to go after dinner in Avondale. The only downside with Gala is that the shop has weird hours. Right now, they are open Wed-Sat from 2 PM on. Hopefully this will change the longer they are open. read more

So first, the positive. . . The young lady behind the counter was charming and had excellent service instincts. The coffee was exquisite. The atmosphere was nice and they were open and happy to accommodate on a cold, somewhat wet, and dead evening. Now, I don't know if we just ordered the wrong desserts, but they were totally substandard. The carrot cake was dry, tasted not even vaguely like it had ever been introduced to carrots, and had some grainy, white icing that seemed like it would have been more at home on a cinnamon bun or some such. Also, last I checked, carrot cake contains spices of some kind--cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, something! Not this one. The chocolate mousse cake was also bland, dry, and about as chocolatey as sand. NOT exciting. Again, maybe we should have gotten the peanut butter mousse. . . Anyway, less than impressive. Wish I Could think of more nice to say. read more

Gala Desserts on Savannah Highway in West Ashley has delicious desserts that are well worth a visit to check out. The location is very convenient to many restaurants for an after meal dessert or for a snack during the middle of the day. They have an excellent selection of desserts that make it hard to choose from sometimes, but there is no wrong choice as everything I have tried has been really good. read more

If you're getting a haircut next door at The Barber & Shave Shoppe and for some odd reason have the urge to suddenly eat dessert or have coffee, STEP INTO HERE. One of the barber's mentioned that had great desserts and coffee at Gala so I figured why not? I went for the Raspberry Dream, and it does not disappoint at all. So creamy, so sweet, so delicious. It's like eating tiramisu and cheesecake combined into one. There's no other way to describe it honestly. I loved it. I'll venture back to try their coffees but they have a standard drink menu like most other shops. However, it's the desserts that are the main stars here. Check out their display case of everything they offer. Baked goods and desserts, nothing looks like a bad choice. Went with my daughter and daughter-in-law for dessert. I had key-lime cheesecake and it was creamy, a little tart and delicious! The others had the apple pie tart and they said their desserts were so good. I was a bit surprised, as was the gentleman next to us, when I went to sit on a chair cushion and sank impossibly low!! Gala is the perfect cure to any sweet tooth craving! The desserts are made by the owner who is such a delight if you catch her while she's working. I haven't tried one thing I don't like, but my absolute favorite is hands down the Almond Joy (and I don't even like the Almond Joy candy bar). Every bite is perfect. The ginger cheesecake is also something to try; the ginger puts just the right amount of tang and twist to the cheesecake. The drinks are great too. We look forward to trying breakfast soon. We've also tried the bruschetta and the caprese skewers and they were good. The interior is quaint and intimate. This is the perfect spot to bring a date, a friend, or to go by yourself. I love sitting at the chairs by the window and watching passersby (who usually end up stopping in after seeing my dessert). Every staff member is so personable and sweet. I've been looking for a new go-to bakery in West Ashley since moving here in August, and I believe that I've just found it. The reviews on here (the good ones anyway) are accurate and were enough to get me to walk in. The ambiance of the location is welcoming and delightful on the inside, and the display case makes you want to sample everything on the menu. I tried the Almond Joy and it was a joy to eat with almond shavings on top. If it were not so early in the day and before lunch time, I probably would've sat longer and sampled more, but I plan on returning a few more times. The owner is super friendly and treats you like she's known you forever when you walk in. We stopped in here after a Citadel baseball game to grab some to-go desserts. We decided on the Chocolate Mousse (CM) cake and the Bailey's cheesecake. The CM cake was HUGE!!! It was really good and not too rich. We ended up saving it and ate it over the course of a couple of days. The Bailey's was ahhhmazing. Definitely my favorite of the two.
