Love this place. They used to have some of the best sushi in the area. The owners had to remove sushi from the menu due to the price increases for sushi grade fish but their Thai dishes are still top notch. Service is great and I love the decor of the restaurant. Galae Thai Restaurant's authentic Thai decor was amazing..I am usually leery about when restaurants try to cater to multiple cultures (Japanese-sushi, Thai-coconut curry, ect). It seems, like with all restaurants in America, that the owners want to bank on the latest trend. Sushi is hot and vogue. Do not get me wrong I loved Calae Thai all the way down to the desert. However, I ONLY order Thai food. I can tell you the food is very good and authentic despite some attempts to make it more pall-able to Americans. For example, the waiter double check to make sure I was ordering "Thai Tea" and not "Chi Tea", and she verified she told me that its very sweet. I told I know and keep it how you would serve it in Thailand. I have no doubt it was Ceylon tea, whole milk, orange blossom, star anise, and lots of sugar. It was excellent!!! The main entree I had was signature dish Leka Thai with Broccoli and sticky Jasmin rice. It was medium spicy and very good. Some complained rice was too sticky...but that is what it is supposed to be. The real treat was the desert. My eyes peeked when I read "Galae Coconut Ice Cream", (they also had green tea and mango) and I asked the waitress 2x is it hand made she replied yes twice. It was amazing!! The texture of raw coconut (some chunks) along with ice cream was almost like an italian ice. Light, sweet and extremely rich. If you love coconut, this is a must. I would have rather Galae did not "Americanized" it with whip cream and a cherry on top...but underneath that was the real deal. I kind if chuckled at all the warnings on a separate menu about sushi, saying that even tho its "raw fish" its still prepare and cooked in some way via ginger fermentation, frozen, etc. and its safe to eat. Also, their was an extensive refund policy on sushi if you did not like it. If only 10% was eaten than full refund. All in all, if you want real Thai food I recommend Galae, if you can see under all the Americanizing and even though I did not oder sushi, I would not recommend it. Check it out, the decor alone was breathtaking. My advice to Galae Thai is be authentic, stop trying to "Americanize" to Americans pallet and stop being something your not like a Japanese Sushi restaurant. read more

It is critical that my softball team wins a few games this season, because Galae Thai is too close to the softball fields and the drinks are too good--the perfect storm for alcoholism. Another loss, another shot of patron silver. But I've never seen it the way it was served--in a fairly large shot-and-a-half glass with salt and a lime. I usually just take it straight. Yeah, that's how I roll. Uh! My teammates (half of them have to be women for us to play in this league, lame!) all ordered a mixed drink from their fairly nice drink menu. Thumbs up, they say! For snacks, we ordered the spring rolls. They were cut, so they were easy to dip into the sauce. Now, the sauce was eh, but the spring roll was nice and crunchy and fresh. We also had a couple of orders of sashimi with tuna, salmon and... I think it was octopus? Delicious. Well done, it looked neat and tidy in presentation. Oh, the decor! Man, the thai restaurants nowadays bring it! The artwork and sculptures in there are just awe-inspiring sometimes. And I'm not just saying that 'cause I'm tipsy as I type this. Not too bad! Their take on pad thai was different than I've had before, with a thinner, lighter sauce. The serving size was large and I was full splitting that and two apps. The egg roles were delicious and the dumplings were very different but also good. Solid place, just wish the sauce on the noodles was a little thicker and more flavorful! read more

Love it! They remember us and already know what we want before we order. Service is fast, drinks are good, they give you those fun twisty straws. Food is the best Thai food I've ever had. They closed the sushi bar due to covid so we never got to try it. Pad ginger with chicken is my go to, so flavorful, and just enough hotness that it is not overbearing. We went with a friend and she got the basil fried rice and didn't read the super spicy rating. The sever brought her a Thai iced tea for free to counter act the hotness, and she didn't even ask. Are you looking for... -Friendly customer service? -Quickly prepared foods? -An expansive menu? Oh you are? Well then, DON'T go to Galae Thai. I wanted all these things and then some but unfortunately was not afforded them. We walked in mostly confused because the restaurant was broken into two areas and there didn't seem to be any direction in where to go. We stopped a waitress to ask if we could seat ourselves and she instructed us that someone would seat us. We waited for 2 minutes before someone finally approached us and sat us down. We looked at the menu to which I had to read and re-read over and over as it clearly didn't match the menu listed on their website. I went to quench my hankering for two rolls which were not on the menu (among many others). When I questioned the missing rolls, the waitress couldn't understand my question and when I told her that on their very own website they had a different menu she merely shrugged and said the rolls couldn't be made. This bummed me out considering that I specifically came to a Thai place for these sushi rolls (which by the way are standard to any other sushi place). After that service kept declining. We waited quite a while for her to return to actually take our order. Then another 15 minutes from her taking our payment and returning with our credit card. We were never asked if anything was needed and the $12 plate of drunken noodles was half salad. When I asked for dressing for the bare lettuce, the waitress informed me that it was for decoration only and nearly refused to give me dressing until I pressed a bit more. The food while it was decent did not make up for the lack of give-a-damn service. Next time I see a movie in this area, I'll eat at another place...ANY other place in the center has to be better than this right??? read more

So went here a couple of days with the bf. I have to say - this place has really gone downhill in terms of the quality of the food - though service has always been fine. He pretty much summed up the experience in his review. Just a side note: This is the second time I've gotten green curry, though this time I got it with pork instead of beef. The "filaments" of lemongrass in my dish were very strange. First off, I've used lemongrass before; makes me wonder if they shredded it or something. I've never seen it break off in filaments before that look like hair. I agree that it may be time to look for a new Thai place. I'm really surprised to see that this place has such a low rating because the food was good. Despite the sanitation score being on the low side, I came here on a Saturday evening and there wasn't much of a wait I was able to walk in and be seated. The restaurant has a decent amount of seating I really liked the decor. The server was very friendly and made sure to consistently bring me water with no ice (sometimes servers forget lol) and I really appreciated that. I ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai and it was amazing. The serving size was pretty huge and I ended up having to take some to go. I also liked that there was a good shrimp to noodle ratio (some places will only give you like 3 pieces of shrimp. I know only 4 are showing in the pictures but there were more beneath the noodles). I did find it interesting that they served the noodles in a hard taco shell (I think that's what it was) and they also had Thai empanadas; very interesting menu option for a Thai restaurant. None the less, the food was delicious. If I'm ever craving good Thai food I'd order this to go. read more

This place has some of our favorite Thai food. We had chicken Pad Thai and pork drunken noodles, and both came out incredibly delicious. We asked for mild spice on the Pad Thai and it came out with no spice at all, but we had spices we could add ourselves. Trying it medium next time- looking forward to it! One small note is that the chairs are very hard and may make extended sitting periods a little rough. Which is probably just as well, because unfortunately the owners of the plaza (not the restaurant) reduced the free parking to one hour, certainly not enough time to really enjoy a meal. You'll probably need to park in the paid parking up the street, and they don't validate parking. Not holding it against them, just good to know. The movie theater does validate if you're going there anyway and want to see a movie. Ordering delivery now, looking forward to posting an update later! read more

The atmosphere is beautiful inside this place, although the seats are pretty darn uncomfortable (oddly shaped, all wood, no armrests). Some of the more elaborate dishes are pretty expensive for Thai food at this restaurant (entrees up to $20). However, basics such as fried rice or noodle dishes are reasonably priced (around $10). This restaurant has my favorite pad thai in the entire DC area so far. It is a decent sized portion and the flavor is spectacular. It's just the right about of peanut flavor and oily-ness. I have to admit I've never ordered anything but pad thai here, but my husband likes the pad sei ew and the friend rices. This is the place to go for pad thai. If you want some seafood or specialty dish, you'll get great food here but you'll pay a bit more for it than other thai restaurants. read more

It was my fiancé and I's first time eating here since we moved into the apartments across the street. We were in the mood for some good Thai food and found this little place. When we arrived it was about 5:30pm on a Thursday and no one was there to greet us. We had to walk in towards the bar for one of the waitresses to see us. We were then seated immediately. The look of the restaurant is really nice; with nice wooden Asian accents and dim lighting (which I thought was a nice touch). Our waitress took our food order but we weren't served our food for quite a while. There was a family who came in after us and ordered practically the same dishes but somehow a party of 4 was served before the two of us. I had ordered a couple rolls of sushi and crab fried rice as my entree and my fiancé ordered the red curry. When the food did arrive it was very tasty. The sushi was good but nothing too special. I would agree that they are a bit overpriced, but good nonetheless. My fried rice and his red curry was also very good. My fiancé did have to get up and get the attention of our waitress to get the spices for my rice. Overall we enjoyed our dining experience however the service was very poor. It ran slowly and our waitress barely came to check on us for anything we needed. However, if you're looking for good Thai I would recommend another restaurant. read more

This place is located in Hoffman center right next to the movie theater so it's a great dinner & movie place. The food here is among the best in the area. If you didn't know...there's a surplus of Thai places in NoVA. I wouldn't say this is THE BEST because personally I like Thai Curry and Duangrat's more. The interior of the place is pretty cool. They have a lot of figurines and cultural decorations. The service is pretty good as well. Come here to supply all of your drunken noodle and pad thai needs. read more

The decor in this restaurant is gorgeous. It's conveniently located across from Hoffman Theater and the wait staff is extremely friendly. The food was and prices were decent but I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever had. They have great food presentation which makes you feel special. However, what really keeps me coming back there for more is their Mango and Sticky Rice. They serve it with a brown sticky rice instead of the typical white sticky rice and thinly sliced mangos so that it's easier to share the dessert (although after one bite you won't want to share it!) and strawberry slices! The food is great and the service is Ok; been here multiple times with my family of 5 and they continue adding a 20% tip after taxes and don't even ask. Then after I give then my credit card they bring a receipt that shows zero tip. I do not have a problem tipping 20% or more if the service is worth it, but do not appreciate the deceiving tactic of adding an automatic tip, which should not include the tax and then showing as if a tip was not paid. If you do not look at the receipt and decide to add a "tip" after the credit card receipt is brought, you would be adding a 30-40 percent after paying another 15-20 percent more with the credit card. They serve the curry and these irregular looking bowls, I just dump the rice in and it's super delicious. Also, they do deliver through some of the food apps. I stopped here with my partner to grab a quick dinner before a movie on a Saturday night. It was disappointing to have picked this place out of all the restaurants in the strip based on the neon sign that said "SUSHI" and then come inside and find out that they actually don't have sushi. Apparently the sushi chef was out of the country. It would have been really easy to just not plug in that neon light until it's applicable again.. Anyhow, we got seated and then nobody came to serve us. I ended up making eye contact with a server from another section and he came over to see if we'd been helped. He ended up taking our table, but was not very polite and implied that he wasn't supposed to be our server, so we should wait for him to go get someone else. I explained that we had a movie to catch, had already waited, and encouraged him to put our order in. He agreed and the food came very quickly. It was a huge portion and it tasted pretty good. I came here for the first time after 8:00pm so it wasn't busy. Service was welcoming and friendly. I opened the menu to see my favorite Massaman Curry with chicken, so I ordered that without hesitation. My food arrived quick, beautifully plated and was amazingly delicious. Today I came back for the second time, again after 8pm, and ordered the same dish. Again service was exceptional, my plate was beautifully presented and of course it taste wonderful. The Massaman Curry has such intense flavors and the perfect amount of spice. During the cold winter days it's the perfect warming dish. Eating Massaman curry makes me happy. My coworkers and I were looking for a quick bite, since we hadn't eaten all day, and Galae Thai was right across the street! So in we went. The restaurant itself is really nicely decorated, and our waitress was so, so nice. The entrees are a little more expensive than you typically encounter at a Thai restaurant, but I guess they have to pay for the nice decor somehow. My pad see eew with pork was alright, but not particularly memorable. The presentation was actually really nice, but I would have preferred a slightly tastier dish. My friends weren't floored by their own entrees either, and no one chose to take their leftovers home, which is pretty indicative of what the food was like. If you have a giant Thai craving, you could stop in, but if you can wait, I would go elsewhere. read more
