I have been coming here several times a week for years and it never gets old! The service is excellent and the food is spot on 99% of the time. I think in the 100+ times I've eaten here, they messed my order up once and they fixed it immediately. Also, I love the interior of the place and the music that they play. For some reason I always want to go here on a rainy night and sit in a booth. It's cozy. I think I've tried most things on their menu lol but I definitely have favorites. I am currently on a chicken tortilla soup kick and I love theirs. It is so hardy and delicious and has the perfect amount of kick. The mac and cheese is wooooow. It's so cheesy and perfect. I don't eat it often but I wish I could eat it all day, every day. Really though... If I'm wanting to be extra healthy, I order the fish wrap with grilled fish and it has so many ingredients and so much flavor it doesn't feel like it's as healthy as it is. One of my staples is the tomato and mozzarella sandwich. I get it with the balsamic roasted tomatos and with pesto mayo and WOW it's sooo good. I want that now actually. I get it on ciabatta bread and highly, highly recommend it. The sweet potato fires, the Buddha bowls, the desserts, I could go on and on listing everything I like! This is a somewhat trendy indoor style cafe/restaurant with fresh organic/local food and great coffee. Now having said that, if I'm going somewhere for an outside experience to drink coffee, have lunch or read, I will go somewhere like Winflow in Clarksville, Opa, or even Mandolas in South Austin. But if its 100 degrees outside and I want to be in a very cold place, or if I am working remotely or when I was taking the CPA exam and studying 5 hours a day, this place is/was perfect. I was able to eat and drink coffee for hours without worrying about paying for countless cups of coffee (one cup has free refills) or taking up a waitresses section (there are no waitresses). The staff is friendly and while there are peak times when its crowded and loud with kids reverberating throughout due to stained concrete floors and cavernous open ceilings, its mostly a fairly chilled out, very clean place with good music and a sort of retro 'Galaxy' outer space type theme. I like the breakfast options which seem fresh, but haven't had too many lunch/dinner of the entrees beyond the burger which was average. The desserts are awesome, especially the cowboy cookie. For this review, I am only reviewing the dinner menu. I don't have any experience with their breakfast menu. With that said.... I keep giving this place a chance but the food is painfully average. Everytime I go, I get something different hoping to discover their greatness but it's just not there for me. When I leave, I am not mad or disappointed, I just always find myself saying, "Meh. I've expereienced better". However, there is never a wait in the evenings and that is always a good thing. read more

I see why they make you order and pay before sitting! If we had been seated and ordered/received this food, we would have refused our entire meal. This is our first visit to Austin and after reading some yelp reviews regarding breakfast nearby our accommodations, we decided to try Galaxy as it was 2 miles from us. It's in a strip mall - which is weird to us but *shrug*, it IS Austin afterall. The sign at the front asks that you order at the cash register before seating yourself - more weird? Yep- but oh well- anything for more great food from this place. My DH and I ordered an order of the deluxe French toast and an American breakfast. We served ourselves our own coffee and water at the beverage station - which was an unexpected chore as the station is tiny and with even a short line of 5 people so close to the cash register, there's a constant bottleneck effect. Our food: Scrambled eggs with cubes of a slice of American cheese on top - unmelted. Gross. Ciabatta roll- was more like a half of a roll, not a whole. And it was cut in half and supposed to be toasted but it wasn't even warm. A platter of butter and jams were brought to the table with the food, but who wants to eat cold toast ? The bacon was thinly sliced and tasted like it was microwaved - no applewood smoked or any type of flavor. You can get better bacon at a fast food drive-in. The deluxe French toast was presented nicely- with stacks of strawberry and banana in between & on top of beautiful browned bread. It was covered in powdered sugar.(maple syrup is 79 cent extra *eye roll*) . One bite and we knew that we were walking out - the bread had seeds/multigrain stuff in it - not our style. We left the restaurant with full plates of food on the table and full cups of the self serve coffee & water still on the table! What a waste of $24!! Headed to 24 diner on N Lamar now ... Maybe I was just expecting too much...I wanted a real hamburger not a frozen patty with bleu cheese on it. The bun was thicker than the burger and the frozen veggies were pretty pathetic. The waitress didn't bring me silverware or napkins I had to go to the register to request them...overall a pretty disappointing experience...but alas the Pinot Grigio was tasty hence the extra star other than that Galaxy Cafe oversells on the menu and woefully under delivers at the table...I took away a star I had to send my burger back...correction I had to carry my burger back to the hostess station because the manager never checked on me...because it was really overcooked. read more

This used to be very near where I lived. The husband and I enjoyed it for breakfast and late-night meals. The french toast is truly the stand-out on their menu. It is divine. The quiche is hit or miss. The oatmeal is a total miss; seriously, if you're a restaurant and you use instant oatmeal, you get black marks from me. I lived in the Triangle for two years and so I spent lots of time at the north location, but this was my first time to the south location. And my thoughts on it are essentially the same as with the North location: good food, quirky atmosphere, but that they're a little too proud of their food to make me a regular (translation: too expensive). They have great sweet potato fries, and a good selection of breakfast items (and the prettiest scrambled eggs I've ever seen). But compared to places like Magnolia and Maudies (my favorite weekend breakfast stops) I just think it is too expensive! I do love the self-serve coffee (I hate sitting with an empty coffee cup) and the restaurant is always impeccably clean (I also hate the idea of food poisoning). We'll definitely be back if it is convenient, but it isn't somewhere that I'd go out of my way to visit. read more

I'm shocked I haven't reviewed Galaxy yet. Definitely my favorite place to get lunch. I prefer their lunch/dinner menu over their breakfast but it is all good. I want to try new things here, but I can't get over how good the Bleu Cheese Bacon Burger is. I have dreams about it. I usually switch it up by alternating my sides - pesto pasta salad is my favorite, sometimes I get the fresh fruit or the sweet potato fries though. I call an order in about once a week here. I'm a native Austin-ite, but trapped in Wa for the time being. Maybe it was that they don't give out any snacks on the air plane anymore, so I was ravenously hungry, or the rain, either way, last nights Italian burger was the BEST burger I'd had that I can remember(this is good, I can't even remember what dinner was 3 days ago!). I asked for my pesto mayo on the side, and they did it, I wanted the dressing for my salad on the side, bingo. If you don't order dessert the same time as your meal you have to go back to the counter, which my waist line likes as my laziness wins out and I skip it. I was not a fan of the funky ranch dressing, when I come home I like the plain old stuff since up north you have to settle for... Well not sure what it is to be honest.... They are consistently yummy and I'm only finding new items that are becoming my favorites. My added favorite dishes: Mexican Breakfast. The tortillas are perfect in it. Perfect blend of texture and taste. It can be spicey, but it's still awesome. Only place I like any version of 'migas'. Yep, the ONLY place I like this. We now get a 1/2 order of the French Toast, so we can have bites, but also get our favorite breakfast foods. Time and time again Galaxy South comes through. I end up having dinner here a couple nights a week. Always get a simple Bacon Cheeseburger. The burger is always fresh, cooked to order, and the staff is great. Highly recommend for a great value dinner or lunch out. read more

Southside cafe. I haven't been to a lot good breakfast joints in south Austin. We really like going here for brunch. We tried their French Toast Deluxe with fresh strawberries and bananas and it was really good but a little sweet for my taste. However i usually get their mushroom and swiss burger with Turkey and sweet potato fries. Their burger is huge and well seasoned. I am looking forward to going back here. read more

I really wanted to like this place but It was mediocre at best. Both of the dishes we had were extremely bland and just not worth the money honestly. We got the zocalo burger and the grilled chicken sandwich and shared. Both meats were very under seasoned and bland. The chicken was also pretty dry. I have been frequenting this galaxy cafe since high-school. Ideal for lunch with its upscale decor, quick service and counter payment, and healthy food options. Despite having moved further into north Austin, I will still make a stop in whenever I come south. I'm torn on how to rank this place. I've been here multiple times hoping that each time I will like it more, but never really get past average. I don't like the notion of ordering before you get served and asking for a tip. I have no problems tipping, but I don't get the notion of tipping before you get service. There is a variety of food and there are a nice selection of healthier food. I don't know how to describe the food -- I think of it as nicer cafeteria food. The tuna wraps are good, but nothing special. The salads are also decent, but not spectacular. I do like the sweet potato fries sides, but then again, I am always a fan of sweet potato and unless you make them mushy, they are good to me. On certain nights you will find a band playing also. That is a nice touch and more than makes up for the average food. Overall it is a nice place to visit, but if I had to rank food, I just can't rank it over average. If I could give 1/2 stars, I'd give it 3.5. read more

We met some out of town family here for dinner. I ordered the Pesto Alfredo Pasta and Ms. Princess ordered the kid's pasta and meatball. The food came up quickly and they delivered everything to the table for us. Mine came with a small salad and some bread and Ms. P's came with a fruit cup. The Pesto Alfredo was creamy but still light, the salad was crispy, and the bread was lightly toasted. Ms. Princess loved the fruit bowl, but I was a little disappointed that it was mostly cantaloupe. The atmosphere was super cute, clean and fun. Since we came in early for dinner (around 5:30) we asked them to turn down the music because it was a bit distracting. They were happy to accommodate. We wanted to go a little fatty tonight, but with locally sourced ingredients. Still have to care about my food source even when eating sometimes a bit unhealthy. The customer service isn't bad and I thought everyone was nice. The atmosphere is not formal, but isn't exactly a p'terry or holy cow joint.. its in the middle and over all inviting. We went here a few weeks ago after waking up with a serious hankering for some good brunch/cafe style food. It's nearby, and we had never been there, so why not? The menu is huge. I barely had time to read through it by the time we got ready to order. Our eyes were way bigger than our stomachs that day, and we ordered a feast, including three drinks each (don't judge). The iced coffee was delish. I got the Mediterranean eggs, and he got the shrimp salad. The Mediterranean eggs were decent. The only thing that really disappointed me was my fruit cup - I should have known better from past experience, but there was way too much melon in it (I don't like melon). He loved his shrimp salad, and if I remember right from my one bite of it, it truly was tasty. The service was prompt. It's a fast-paced environment, much like a diner, so I wouldn't recommend going there if you plan on camping out at your table for several hours - not the right vibe for that. This is my new favorite place to eat. I am about to reveal the addict side of my personality: I have eaten there four out of the past five days. While waiting an hour before ATT opened to get the new iphone last Friday morning, I walked down the strip to Galaxy Cafe. I read about them a while ago and saw that they offer "happy" beef and chicken and I had been meaning to give them a try. Obviously, I'm glad that I did. That morning I had a kid's order of French toast, which is served with strawberries and banana. I worked at a breakfast restaurant a couple years ago and only ate it once there as I have never really been a huge fan of the stuff, but this French toast was great! Coffee was good too. I went back three times in the following days, once to the Triangle location. The steak wrap with chimichurri sauce is wonderful; chimichurri should replace ranch as America's favorite dressing/dip, it's incredible. I also had the chicken chipotle wrap which was good (steak wrap was better). You can get mixed fries with both regular and sweet potato. My husband had a burger, which he said was good but obviously not as amazing as our favorite burger place. I'm not a mac and cheese nut, but theirs is good. My surprise favorite- the chicken tenders. We took our niece and nephews there and they all ordered the chicken and I was sneaking bites off their plates. Very tasty! The chocolate torte is nice too :) The employees are very sweet, helpful, and patient. Also, with the golocal card you get a free drink if you spend under $25, a free dessert if over $25. read more

After a long morning of Sunday outings, several of us were ready to eat some lunch. The galaxy cafe was unanimously voted as the first choice. Apparently, it was also the first choice for everyone else in the neighborhood as well. When we arrived, there was one table available and a line almost out the door. We were able to snag the table and five chairs around it. The employees were friendly and did everything they could to make sure everyone found a place to sit or didn't have to wait too long for a seat. The menu was comprehensive and had choices for nearly every kind of diet. My mother, who is allergic to onions found a turkey burger that was enjoyable. Other various sandwiches and burgers were ordered with sweet potato fries cooked to perfection and gooey mac n' cheese that made me envious. I ordered the Asian seared tuna salad with seared ahi tuna, edamame peas, a variety of greens and a delicious and refreshing dressing made of sesame vinaigrette, lime juice and cilantro. I didn't take my attention off my salad until it was completely eaten, it was incredible. Everyone enjoyed their meals and mentioned that the soda, which is made from real sugar and not corn syrup, was much appreciated. The service was fast and pleasant. The restaurant was clean. The decor was quirky and galaxy-esk but it wasn't overdone. The restaurant was certainly proud of its food and sold t-shirts that advertised their famous sweet potato fries. Sometimes the parking lot gets very crowded from Maudie's next door but we are so lucky to have this location because the original Galaxy on W Lynn has NO parking there. Galaxy is our neighborhood fallback. Whenever we can't figure out where we want to go, we wind up here. Breakfast, lunch or dinner, we have yet to be disappointed. It's not spectacular. It's not going to blow you away. It will, however, probably have something you want to eat, and it will be worth your while. Kid menu is fine. They like the oatmeal for breakfast and the burgers for lunch or dinner. There are quite a few choices as well for growned-ups (as my son says). Burgers, sandwiches, wraps, salads or entree-type stuff - it's all there. I am partial to the migas for breakfast, and the coffee is quite good. On par with Kirbey Lane in that regard. Decor is funky and lively, but it does have odd acoustics. On occasion, you can clearly hear conversations from several tables away. I think it's all the curved walls. Keep that in mind if you plan to discuss state secrets over french toast. It's a good place. We shall return. Probably more than once. read more

I'm not sure about all the other galaxy cafes but I would not come back here for anything else than their big breakfast is indeed big and hearty. Why I would not come back: It's all the other stuff that matter: For a Sunday morning the place was WAY too dark. it's in a strip mall between brick oven and a subway so the light that actually comes in is minimal plus their overhead lighting was on a really dim setting. The ambiance of the place: simple modern but so simple that the chairs and tables are very "formica-y" and lightweight. So it's just not a good furniture combo, esp. with kids. We had to sandwich folded napkins under the legs of our table so our coffee would stop spilling. The tables surface was so sliippery I ended up spilling my coffee and my water because once there is moisture on the surface of the table, plates, cups and whatever else on the table can go sailing into your lap. Of course the unbalanced table did not help. The chairs are WAY uncomfortable too. It's like sitting in the ikea cafeteria--McD's molded plastic chairs are mor comfortable than these chairs. At one point a "server" came and wiped off the coffee i spilled and asked if we could be served anything else--like did we need anything else and I said other than the wobbly table this is fine. and he said he'd get back to us about that. Well he did get me my extra plate i requested but not once did he actually fix the table. That said I don't think I'd come back there just because I didin't like the whole pay for your order then sit down aspect of it. I want to relax and drink my coffee at breakfast so I like to be "served" --isn't that what we go out to eat for? There's too many people just "milling about" IMHO because they have to get their own drinks, coffee, napkins, ketchup and what have you. Sure i guess you could argue you are saving the tip but I would rather tip a server who is attentive than have to do everything myself. Despite all this and the ambient noise level echoing everywhere I do appreciate their antibiotic and hormone free approach to their food. read more

I couldn't be happier eating here. The food was on key both times, showing consistency. The gluten free options are endless, including dessert! The mimosas are lovely and made just the way I like it, mostly champagne and a splash or two of OJ.
