A Richmond staple. It's been around since 1999 and located conveniently in Carytown (right next to my boyfriend's tattoo shop). He had been begging me to go for a year, and we finally did. The menu is PACKED with diner style burgers, hotdogs, sides, sandwiches, and milkshakes. I LOVED the options!! It's exactly what you crave late at night when you want to be bad. Doesn't hurt that they have $1.50 PBRs! My boyfriend had the nuclear waste burger (a burger with pineapple, chili, and cheese). I had the spicy Hawaiian (jalapeños, pineapple, pepper jack cheese). On the outside, I wasn't sure what to expect. There was a sign up that said "Cash Only" Apparently their credit card machine has been going up and down, and Verizon was not doing their part in keeping it up. We were asked if this was OK and it was. The front of the eatery is a very small waiting area, but what you don't know is that the resturaunt goes WAY back, it's really deep. The design of this place is stupid cute. I love the movie posters and the lights on the wall. It's a lot to take in and it's a lot of fun. We were seated at a booth but we asked to move to a table that would be more comfortable, they had no problem. We looked at the menu and decided on what we wanted. We placed our orders with our waitress: I chose the Philly cheese steak, with onions and peppers and a side of tots. My friends got a Crab cake with cucumber salad and the other got the black and bleu burger with onion rings. The food didn't take long at all and we all were happy with the bonus fried pickle that each entree comes with. Those are the real gem of the eatery. SO GOOD. My food was delicious, I literally ate every scrap of food I had. I'd asked for a side of ranch for my tots, and found out they have the best ranch I'd ever tasted. It's home made. So tasty! YUMMMY.. Each and every one of us were a member of the clean plate club . When asked, we placed orders for the Brownie bites and fried oreo cookies for dessert. This is the type of place that I'd recommend to indulge in only once in a while or just to try because it is very greasy, and you don't feel very good after you've eaten here lmao (not tryna bash on their food though because the majority of their menu is fried, so you get what you ask for) The hotdog tasted as good as it looked, and the fried pickle was a nice touch to my entree. I've been to this diner before on a slower night. Never had any complaints. I had friends in town so I brought them to the Galaxy. We were told an hour wait they didn't have a set system in place. Our table was called before the hour wait without us knowing. The female host with the pigtails was unprofessional. I'm a solution kind of person. If we needed to get put back on the waiting list she could've just said that. Instead, she walked off and spoke with a coworker about the situation and told him "Good luck with that" the coworker cleaned off a table for us and sat us with no problem. Been here a few times, each time is pretty average, average food at cheap price. But today I was served bacon that was cold and chewy/tough. I asked for new bacon, and what they brought back is whats on the right in the picture, they had, clear as day, dropped it in the frier and it tasted like chicken tenders :/ really disappointing. Getting straight to the point, I would not recommend. I visited the Galaxy Diner after scouring several reviews. I am a bit confused at the abundance of positive ones since my experience was lacking in both food and service quality, but I digress. Upon entering the establishment, myself and my accompanying partner were greeted (and, I use the term very loosely) at the door by a bearded gentleman who was leaning over the counter as he handed us each a set of silverware, and instructed us to "grab that second one", referring to a booth in the direction of which he casually nodded his head. While we are normally accustomed to being ushered to our seats by the greeting host/hostess, as most patrons probably are, we obliged. Being the second booth in the establishment, however, we did have the pleasure of witnessing him usher subsequent patrons to their seats. One can only speculate as to how or why the differentiation was made. Upon seating ourselves, we placed our orders. To say that our waitress was less than attentive would be an understatement. Myself and my accompanying partner both requested hot chocolate, and I requested a glass of water with no ice. Our hot chocolates were lukewarm (distinctly) Swiss Miss with powder residue still visible on the mug handles, and my glass of water arrived with no drinking straw. When I later requested one, it was a plastic drinking straw with NO wrapper (which the waitress handled without gloves, might I add), and was dropped (yes, dropped) onto the table (which one would assume is wiped down with chemicals for sanitation purposes) despite the fact that I extended my hand to intercept it. What the establishment lacked in customer service, they certainly didn't make up for in food quality. I ordered the 'French toast platter' with scrambled eggs with cheese, corned beef hash, and fried apples. The eggs with cheese were light and fluffy, and the cheese was appropriately distributed. The corned beef hash, however, was overcooked, several areas of which was charred. The French toast severely lacked batter (it was essentially toast with powdered sugar), and the fried apples were almost inedible - I didn't finish either of the two. Upon exiting the establishment, the bearded gentleman who was still leaning over the counter didn't so much as thank us for our business or bid us a good day, although I did manage to get a head nod in response to the one I offered up first. I'm a little perplexed regarding the 3+ star reviews, as my experience left much to be desired both in customer service and in food quality. But, I can say with 100% certainty that my first visit will be my last. No love lost. read more

As a Diner enthusiast, I definitely enjoyed the vibes of the restaurant. The staff was absolutely lovely and I think they do a fantastic job of staying true to their theme. However, I would be doing a disservice to the community if I were to rate this restaurant any higher. As a vegetarian, I understand that ersatz meat is often difficult to incorporate into menus. While having options for people with any kind of dietary restrictions is important, I also believe that the options provided should be good. The vegan chicken sandwich did not taste like it should have been on that menu. Furthermore, the taste of the food is not congruent with the cost; everything is priced at a rather exorbitant amount. I normally don't do this but it must be done. Customer service was horrible and food subpar. The manager or owner (White Male) was very rude. The poor service seemed to be directed to African Americans. When I (Black Male) walked in he did not speak, just looked at me. He went back to speaking with the white patrons. I stood there at the doorway. He finally asked if I was dining in or picking up. He sat me at a table and walked off. I was not handed a menu. As I waited for a server (10 mins or so) I realized the menu was posted on the wall in the booth I was seated at. After some time elasped, I looked at him as he was talking away with the other white patrons. He finally realized I have not been helped. He came from around the counter and went to the back of the restaurant and grabbed a server. The server was polite and took my order. When my food arrived, the pancakes were cold. I asked politely if he could warm them up. He looked at me puzzled and never responded or appologized. Finally he picked up the plate and walked back to the counter. Around this time two younger Black males walked in. They asked, "What do you serve here?" He stated, "Food." The two customers then asked, " Do you have table that will sit four?" He pointed at a booth and walked away. The customers got the hint. They were not welcome. They then left The Restaurant . The owner than began to make fun of the customers with the other white customers. Repeating what transpired and lauging at how he treated them with the other white patrons. I asked for the check and paid. As I was leaving, two, young, white males entered. The manager or owner, stopped the conversation with the same white patrons and welcomed them to the restaurant and asked them how he could be of service. This was not the greeting that I received or the other two black males received. I would say, if you are black don't come here, but I will say if you are a human with morals, don't support this business. read more

Let me begin by saying I really enjoyed Galaxy Diner. If you have ever wanted pancakes, bacon with a side of Mac n cheese and the most delicious looking deserts...visit Galaxy Diner. After spending a long day at the amusement park for my goddaughters 9th birthday we were exhausted and slept through acceptable dinner time for most establishments. I jumped on yelp to discover this place and thought it would be a great place for all ages plus they were open until 2am. Finding the establishment from the street was very simple as it certainly stands out amongst the other buildings. I was able to find parking along the street about 2 doors down. Walking in, the establishment looks a lot smaller than many of the photos I saw on yelp. About midway through the meal one of our party members noticed that the diner went further back than we could see. We were seated up front by the door and although I initially thought that I would not like this seating arrangement (having people constantly walk past) it wasn't that bad. We had an amazing server, Rachael, who was very attentive and answered any questions. There is an array of menu items and substitutions are endless. From pancakes to crab cakes everyone at our table enjoyed the food and the atmosphere! I would highly recommend Galaxy when you are in the area! read more

You get a fried pickle and two sides with that! I got tots and Mac and cheese. SO GOOD. Don't judge my carb addiction. The mac and cheese is soooooo creamy and the tots were crispy but not greasy. The cheeseburger was your typical diner cheeseburger. Not out of this world. I preferred to finish my sides over the burger if I had to choose, but still a good burger! My roommate and I partially moved to the area because of this place. We've been many times over the years and we keep coming back after my sister recommended years ago. You get a lot of food. My tried and true is the intergalactic basket. The fried zucchini spears are the selling point for me. This place is especially great if you've had a few drinks or want to get one there. Arrival: There was a large party waiting when we arrived and there isn't much room at all to wait inside. I was confused at what was going on, and I kept looking at the servers and bartender in hopes of getting some direction which was unsuccessful. We weren't greeted until the large party had been sat. In the past, I have had similar issues if there are others waiting. I guess newcomers become lost in the mix with the people who are already waiting. Service: Our waitress was attentive, but her mannerisms, monotone voice, and facial expressions revealed how less than thrilled she was to be there. However, the service is always relatively quick and we had our food in no time. Food: I ordered the Roswell turkey sub, and I enjoyed it. The chipotle mayo was a nice touch that gave it more flavor and a little kick. It was a filling sandwich! The fried pickle was crunchy and tasty per usual​ but seems smaller than I remember. I ordered the mac and cheese as a side. That was a bit of a letdown. It was absolutely flavorless, and I added some salt and pepper to make it more interesting. My fiancé ordered the fries, and they were pretty good. The reason that I continue to come back to Galaxy Diner is the deep fried Oreos a la mode. Let. Me. Tell. You. Something....it is one of my favorite desserts. If you're looking for cold dry toast, cramped tables, chewy pancakes and dingy everything, this is the place for you. After reading reviews, I lowered expectations, I just wanted a fun greasy spoon to hang out for a while. They did let us hang out, and the servers were nice enough. But seriously, how do you even make pancakes chewy? The eggs, sausage, coffee, and prices were all middling but the premises felt neglected and I couldn't find a health department inspection anywhere. Maybe VA doesn't post them? There's a few violations and one corrective action simply asks that they clean the kitchen regularly; if not for the health violations I'd have offered 2 stars. How have I not reviewed my favourite spot for milkshakes (boozy or regular) and fried pickles?! Great vibe when you walk in the door (and they have a water bowl outside for the pups!). My favourite spots are the booths in the front, but there is a larger space in the back, too. My favourite sandwich is the grilled cheese with a side of tots. The have a lot of vegetarian options, but the traditional diner menu to hit all the meat eaters, too. It's a Richmond tradition. You really should give it a try! read more
