After years of being in the area for plays, shopping and university related stuff and not being able to get in due to the wait time not fitting our plans or schedule, we finally made a reservation online to have a meal at this legendary place. We showed up and the place was buzzing with a line out the door. I checked in at the podium and hostess said table will be ready in 5 minutes. 2 minutes later, we the hostess to our table. Looking around everything was the old classic/stereotypical ideas of a what a great steakhouse should be and it did not disappoint. Sal was our waiter, he was friendly, professional and one look we could tell we were in the more than capable hands and nothing would be amiss. He told us about the specials, lunch or dinner menu options. The other wait staff worked like a team that has been together for years, checking on everyone in our section, delivering our orders, refilling our glasses, answering questions, bussing our table everyone with smooth and practiced motions. 2 Caesar salads, 1 8 oz filet w/baked potato, 1 surf and turf w/broccoli everything cooked and presented to perfection. For dessert, the legendary cheesecake with coffee and the baked Alaska. It was the perfect ending to a great meal. I don't believe that there is or could ever be a "perfect" steak. That being said, tonight I may have had the closest thing to a perfect stake. I first thought, "this is really good". Then it got more delicious the more I ate. But the "pièce de résistance" occurred when my daughter, who doesn't like steak tasted a bite a said, "I never knew steak could taste like that ". The crab cake and stuffed shrimp were very good also but not quite as good as the steak. The ambiance of the whole vibe reminds me of an old movie, where important people from all walks of life go to have a good meal. I had an amazing experience at Gallaghers last night! They truly live up to their name as the best steak in NYC. We ordered crab cakes as the starter appetizer and it was delicious. The filling was light and airy and I believe they used real crab for the filling! For the main course we tried the porterhouse and prime rib. I personally preferred the porterhouse more, especially the sirloin. The meat was juicy and tender and I have to say it was one of the best steak I have had. The prime rib was also very nicely done, even at medium it showed a little pink. The dessert we tried the baked Alaska. It was a spectacular fire show! read more

Had an exceptional experience at Gallagher's. Got lucky with a roomy spot at the bar and enjoyed a full dinner. I started with the Gorgonzola salad which was simple but perfect. Great vinaigrette dressing with healthy chunks of cheese. For the main intent with their signature Rib Steak and would say it is up there with the greats in the city. Perfectly cooked to medium rare with lots of earthy notes. I closed with the tiramisu which was large and tasty. Valentine's dinner well done (or shall I say medium rare?)! We were seated promptly after coat check and started off with two delicious cocktails-- Sidecar and Ziegfeld Follies. For starters, we got the steak tartare and tuna poke. For main, we shared a porterhouse for two with a side of mac n cheese, followed by a decadent cheesecake. Steak tartare 4/5: creamy texture, smooth and paired with lightly toasted bread. I enjoyed each bite, savoring the hints of mustard and pickle. If you're a savory fan, you'll enjoy this. Spicy tuna poke 3/5: besides the wonton chips being delicious, the poke itself was ok. It was bland in flavor compared to the poke I usually eat on the west coast and found that the radish chunks were too big. The quality was fresh but I'd skip this next time. Porterhouse 5/5: we got a mixed cut of medium rare ribeye and filet mignon, which was such a splendid eat. The steak was cooked to perfection and came out on a hot plate. I liked that it wasn't salty at all and paired really nicely with their signature steak sauce (tomato based). It's a perfect portion for two people Mac n Cheese 4/5: nothing crazy but still delicious and classic. I made a reservation for Gallaghers for lunch today because it was by my hotel and they have this amazing lunch special deal for only $35. The vibe inside was traditional, old school, and classy. My waiters were super accommodating, down-to-earth, friendly. Since I'm doing keto, I asked if I could have two apps and an entree instead of dessert and they said YES! They also let me swap out the potatoes in my entree for creamed spinach. Also Connie and Maurice poured my sparkling water for me and kept checking in. Super attentive. I can't wait to come back. On top of that, the sliced dry aged filet mignon (medium rare) was the best I've ever had. That sauce! The creamed spinach was so well balanced. I had dinner at Gallaghers last weekend before a show. Gallaghers is a classic, and now I know why. Gallaghers was opened by a Ziegfield dancer (Helen Gallagher) and a partner in 1927 as a speakeasy and steakhouse. I'm sure a lot has changed at Gallaghers in that almost 100 years, but it stills retains so much history and charm. The menu is classic, and I had a very hard time choosing what to order (the downside of a solo meal - you can't try as much). I ended up ordering their jumbo shrimp cocktail, the beefsteak tomato and onion salad, and their bone-in New York sirloin sliced. Everything was delicious. (One note: I like onion a sort of absurd amount. You know people who just can't abide raw onion? I'm not one of those people. While I love the idea, I'm not sure I get their tomato and onion salad. The two slices of white onion were a half-inch thick - just entirely too much raw onion to the amount of tomato. Even for this girl. Is it meant to be a salad? They bring it with dressing! Or are you supposed to eat it as a side with the steak? But it's not listed with the sides? I don't know. But it was the one bite that made me go "huh?" I didn't hate it, but I don't get it either.) I also had a martini, which went great with my meal. The service is just the best. It's a classy place (white tablecloths, uniformed servers), but the service lives up to the class of the place. Started with the French onion soup. Our waiter kindly split one order into two bowls. Main was the 28-day dry aged porterhouse for two plus the charred crispy Brussels sprouts on the side. We finished with cheesecake and chocolate fudge cake. One of the best steakhouses in NYC. Classic vibe that's cozy and upscale, like Polo Bar but with a steak focus. I make sure to make reservations every time I go as it does get packed. Coming here is always my favorite meal in the city. 3 of us came in on Monday night, my table all had filets, medium/medium rare and they were cooked perfect. Calamari to start. Food: My niece and I went to Gallagher's for lunch during the height of the NYC holiday season. Every table was booked so be sure to RSVP in advance! We both loved our $39 three course lunch meal: filet mignon, fingerling potatoes, in a mushroom in wine sauce. Plus Brussels sprouts to share. We both had the cesaer salad appetizer. I finished with the creamiest cheesecake ever and she had the creamiest/richest ice cream! The food was excellent and well priced. The most important thing, however, is that you definitely try the dense brown bread that is served before your meal. It is a date, walnut bread that will knock your socks off! Service: This first thing I noted was that our hostess pulled out our table when she brought us over. This was such a nice touch so you don't have to worry about squeezing in sideways while others are seated beside you. I also noted that my custom Gallagher's steak knife was warm. That was neat! We were tag teamed by two waiters. Harry was our main waiter and he was quite friendly and attentive, also doling out sightseeing recommendations. Our food was well timed and without delay. Gallagher's knows how to handle a full house. Ambience: Music was playing in the background and it wasn't too loud. I wish we had time peruse the old time pictures on the walls of famous actors and the like. We overheard a conversation at the table next to us and actors like George Clooney on Broadway frequent Gallagher's. I think Gallagher's is overlooked when it comes to rating the top steakhouses in NYC. I've eaten at Peter Luger, The Palm, Sparks, Keens, Smith & Wollensky, Wolfgang's, Morton's, David Burke Tavern, Hawksmoor NYC, Charlie Palmer Steakhouse (Las Vegas-closed) and the late Tuscany Steakhouse. Gallagher's is equal to any of them (and better than some), in my opinion. There are a good number of new steakhouses that I have yet to try, for example, Cote, 4 Charles Prime Rib, Porter House and La Tete D'Or. Whether any of these can dethrone Gallagher's in my estimation remains to be seen. For now, though, I will recommend you to their generous jumbo lump crabmeat cocktail and one pound lobster cocktail both of which are only $28. The filet mignon and prime rib are super beefy and delicious. Their French fries are also excellent. read more

Two Broadway shows and two classic NY steakhouses in one day. These are the kind of experiences that make early morning gym visits and vacation savings funds worth it. Because it was not even noon and we had a 1pm show to catch, my +1 and I kept it (relatively) light with a wedge salad, a half dozen oysters, bread and butter service, along with a martini. Though I was jealous of the gentleman sitting next to us at the bar enjoying a steak salad with onion rings on top. The timing on everything was perfect, and we made it across the street to the August Wilson theater with time to grab some M&M's before the show began. It had been a while since I went to a steakhouse before going to Gallagher's, and honestly it kinda reinforced what I thought. Perhaps it is hubris, but I feel like grilling a steak at home (reverse sear) is going to yield similar results to a steakhouse if you invest in the quality of the meat - probably because a $75 steak at a steakhouse is probably only $25? of actual steak, while cooking a $75 steak at home means you can get a much better cut. We ordered a filet mignon and a dry aged New York sirloin. I ordered my New York sirloin medium rare, but it came out pretty much medium well. It was a thick cut and wasn't cooked super evenly, so some bites came out very chewy, and the middle was medium at best. It feels like the steak was overcooked and too chewy, and some of the fat wasn't properly rendered. Also, the dry aged taste was too overpowering - I've had dry aged steaks before but this was on the stronger side of the nuttiness. Overall I came away thinking that I could really have cooked a better steak. The filet mignon was solid, but overall not super impressed by the spot. It probably didn't help that service was rushed and our seats were cramped. We had to move our tables any time our neighbors wanted to get out of their seats, and vice versa. We sat in the rear dining room with views into the kitchen where it was clear that the staff hustled through the early dinner rush. We enjoyed two rounds of wine and cocktails with our meal and enjoyed the fried calamari appetizer special. The calamari was perfectly crispy and salty (tentacles included) and served with a smooth tangy tomato sauce. The porterhouse for two was a perfectly cooked and solid portion for us and paired perfectly with the buttery, velvety mashed potatoes and crispy savory brussels sprouts. The peppercorn crust and au poivre sauce were also delicious but the real star condiment was the house steak sauce - I would've easily bought a bottle of it to enjoy at home. Our servers timed our ordering and meals perfectly and were the perfect facilitators of our meal. To start: 2 Manhattan Clam Chowders - It was ok. Needed more clams. Soup of The Day - Beef Barley. Looked and smelled great, and the saddest Caesar Salad I've ever seen. Very small in size, that appeared to be the last serving in the bowl. Old lettuce that was turning red, and just thrown on the plate. Actually, every Caesar that went by on the serving cart looked just as bad. We all had the Sliced Filet as our main. It was ok. About 4 bites of meat, with a bunch of flattened potatoes, giant chunks of onion and wilted watercress as a garnish. The steak sauce saved the meal as best it could. Desserts were fine. We had already eaten dinner, but while walking by we saw Gallaghers' impressive dry-aging room and couldn't resist stopping in. It ended up being our second dinner of the evening--and it was absolutely worth it. The steak was delicious, the atmosphere was classic New York, and the service was excellent. My son and I went here on a mom/son date before a Broadway show. I wanted somewhere close to Broadway without being a tourist trap. We hit the nail on the head. The ambiance was special and I loved the white coats on the bartenders. It was super cool seeing the cuts of meat at the front of the restaurant. Our server was attentive and kind. It felt like he knew it was a special night and treated us as such. The food was just as expected...delicious. We probably ordered a little too much but YOLO! Would definitely go back! read more

Amazing experience! We took our son and fiance after the Rockette show. We were there for lunch. We arrived a bit early and they accommodated us. It's a cozy vibe with a beautiful bar and the set up is great. Thank you to the hostess for the great table. Our waiter Harry was fabulous that I went back to tell him how nice he was after we were finished. The lunch special cannot be beat. My future daughter in law and I both did the special ( $34 for 3 courses) and it was delish! My Hubs and son did the steak for two with sides. The oysters were so good. All around amazing. Visiting the city and trying to see as much as possible can be hard work. With checking Times Square off the list there came an opportunity to try Gallaghers Steakhouse. While certainly not your new modern steakhouse this place has been around for years and I know why. They do a good job at making food. The service is quick and in some ways quicker than I like. Most likely from being near Times Square and Broadway, they are used to needing to get people out in a hurry. As you can imagine this place has an old school vibe and they just do it right. The bread service was good and the date nut bread while not anything im looking for is original and different from your standard breads. We all shared a wedge salad with juicy plump tomatoes and a light blue cheese dressing. Perfect size for four to share. My friend saw clams casino on the menu and immediately said, we are getting that. I had never had it before but would definitely try it again. They were delicious. We got a shrimp cocktail and a New England clam chowder because you can't get that just anywhere. I almost forgot to tell you about the bartenders magic on my manhattans. Perfection in a glass. The mains were an 8oz and 14oz filet. The rib steak, which was a giant ribeye and a seared tuna steak. All cooked very well but honestly lacked that punch of flavor aka seasoning. I am not one to add sauce to a steak but my filet could've used a little pick me up. The food was all prepared to the exact requested temperature which is a win. The side were creamed spinach that was so good and not too creamy. Grilled onions and broccoli rabe, because you can't get that everywhere. Finished off the meal with an absolute highlight. The NY Cheesecake. It was light and fluffy not dense and creamy. After a big meal it was a perfect end. To be so close to a tourist spot like Times Square you would think each restaurant would mail it in. But Gallaghers has been there for this long for a reason. read more

Made a reservation for 9:00 pm and was quickly seated. I'd say make a reservation because it was packed when i went. Waiters were great 5/5 Food 3-3.5/5 Ambiance 4/5 We ordered: Bacon Clams casino Salmon tartare Porterhouse for 2 medium rare Mashed potatoes Creamed spinach Mac and cheese I do want to give a higher rating but need to be true to my rating. I've been to many steakhouses and i would recommend this one to at least try for the experience but i wouldn't go back again. Bacon is good if you're into a little kick of spice Salmon was too fishy for me but still good Clams wasn't as flavorful as i thought Porterhouse was pretty good and good portion The sides made up for the appetizers Since it was late and super full, the desserts i didn't try. The pricing is not as bad comparing to other steakhouses. read more
