I met a friend here for brunch and it was great. I had to wait about 10-15 min for a table, even though there were empty spots, but maybe they were only seating per how many servers they had. I got there at 10am and I had errands to do in the area afterwards so I can say that pretty much from the time I got there until I left that shopping mall at 1:20 there were lines of people waiting to be seated. Once seated I was greeted promptly by my server and offered coffee or something else to drink. After that though, service was a bit slow. I waited for my friend to arrive and I was served my drink. When my friend arrived, it took another ... maybe 5 or more minutes for anyone to come by to see if she wanted coffee. When a server did stop by he immediately suggested maybe we needed more time? Even without asking her about something to drink! She already knew what she wanted and I said I wanted to describe something not on the menu to see if they could do it. The server was game. I wanted a breakfast scramble, wrapped in a tortilla. Normally the scramble comes with a side of hashbrowns or potatoes. I opted for hashbrowns. When my server was repeating my order back, eggs, ham, cheese, hashbrowns, he asked if I wanted it all inside the tortilla. I said yes, and I got the side of hashbrowns inside too, which I hadn't been expecting, but which tasted pretty darn good, actually. After our order was taken, it took quite a while to get our food, but servers did check on us regularly at that point to get us drink refills and ask if we needed anything. The food was great and both of us left so full we didn't want to even eat dinner that night! The prices were reasonable and the atmosphere was comfortable. I'm giving three stars today because I was disappointed with my order as well as the quality of the food I ordered. This was my third time ordering food from the Galloping hen my first two times where pleasant my food was made to my specifications, tasted great, and prices where fair, however this time I called my order in which was there bacon, onion, tomato, spinach,& cheese omelette for $11.99. I did ask to make a couple of changes no onions add sausage, once I recieved the bill it came to almost $18 and so rather than just charging for extra sausage they decided to charge for all the other items in the omelette as well and just not adding the bacon at all. read more

Ive been living in Ventura for 10 years right up the street from this place and finally decided to try it. Very very very good! We did a phone order for western omelet with hash browns and biscuit and gravy instead of toast. After all it was mothers day. I cant believe we waited so long to try this place. Just went here for the first time today with my wife. We both we're a Amazed at how good this place was. First off there's lots of parking. The service was good, the waitress kept on checking up on us every 5 seconds. I ordered the pork chops and eggs. My wife ordered the chorizo omelette with rice and beans. I got the strawberry waffle it was so simple but I enjoyed every warm crisp bite and that's the best way to describe this place. It's simple food with home flavor. First time customer this morning. They weren't very busy and they had plenty of friendly staff. The place is clean and very cute! Big tables and small, not to cramped, had a clean bathroom. Coffee was hot. I ordered the breakfast enchiladas... I expected enchiladas with breakfast food inside, but it was actually a plate of chicken enchiladas with rice and beans and a side of scrambled eggs. It tasted great! Galloping Hen turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me and my friend, both of us have lived, worked, or shopped in the Ventura area for years and had never tried this local family run restaurant. My initial hesitation was due to hearing some feedback from an acquaintance and I based my decision on that, but after reading the reviews and weighing the good and the bad I opted to find out for myself once and for all and I'm glad I did. This isn't the Ritz, you aren't dining here to have a 5 star meal, nope, at Galloping you are entering an old fashioned eatery, the tables are lined with Red & White vinyl Picnic tablecloths, the vibe is casual and family friendly, and the staff are welcoming and make you feel right at home. Our waitress who seriously resembles Jennifer Aniston Circa 1996/97 of FRIENDS, was attentive and friendly, chatting with us, as we decided on what we wanted. I'm seriously a bad reviewer right now because I'm blanking on the Omelet I got, I know I loved it and ate it all, but for the life on me I'm at a loss... I can however say that the food was hot, the quantity of food you get on your plate is hearty, and your bellies will be full and satisfied. My drink of choice was Ice Tea and I can say that they make a great Tea here, just strong enough to need some sweetness, but not so strong that you need the entire sugar packet add a twist of lemon and a whole lot of ice, and I'm one happy lady. I think they probably refilled my glass at least 5 times if not more, that's when you know I like a tea. If you are looking for a family style breakfast house and don't need the swank, but some down home breakfast cooking, then step into Galloping hen. The infamous Buckaroo plater is SO DELISH! It's one of those dished that need to be on Man vs. Food or more like Diners and Drive In's. Everyone needs a piece of Buckaroo in there lives! It's basically Biscuits n' Gravy with the traditional fixings of breakfast food! The white country gravy is nothing like I've ever had before, so flavorful. I usually do not do the biscuits and gravy dish for BREAKFAST, but since its the signature dish, then how could I pass it up right? Definitely filling, so I would half this dish with someone next time. Meaning, you mosdef get the bang for your buck on this dish. I've been on a mission lately to find the best breakfast places that Ventura County has to offer. On a friend's recommendation I decided to give this place a try. The location is not great and from the outside it does not look like much but that was not going to bother me since the food is what defines a good restaurant. Walking in my first impression was the wonderful smell of water mildew, not exactly what I was expecting, I thought maybe it would be coffee, biscuits or at the least some type of food cooking in the back, but no mildew it was. The place is a little restaurant 20-25 tables, cozy little place and the staff seemed really nice. Now, this is my only pet peeve but when I judge a restaurant I also judge the type of water they serve, water? yes I said water. I ordered a coffee and ice water. Coffee was pretty good but the water, eeek, the white ice cubes spoke for themselves. Ok, now onto the food, I decided to try one of their omelettes which everyone on here was raving about. I don't remember what it was called but it had spinach, spicy sausage, onion and green chiles then I asked for sour cream and salsa on top. All that with a side of fruit and one of their famous biscuits I for sure thought I was going to be in for a treat. On their first try they delivered my omelette, fruit and biscuit all at once which I though was great because it only took them like 5 minutes, too bad it was not the omelette I ordered. To tell you the truth I was not sure what it was until I asked, she said it was their chile colorado omelete which looked more like an accident on my plate, so they apologized and took it back to get the right omelete. So I started with the fruit which was very good, juicy and ripe, lacked variety, but it was very good. And the biscuit was also very good, home made, soft and warm. At that point I was really anxious because I thought if the fruit and biscuit was so good then the omelete was going to be amazing. Finally they made the right one and first of all let me clear this up THOSE ARE NOT OMELETTES! They are simply scrambled eggs shoved up into the corner of the pan in an effort to try to look like the shape of an omelette. Anyhow the taste was good, not great but still it was good. It was a shame though because I was only able to eat half of it, the portion size is ridiculous and most people would not be able to finish it. If I had knew it was so big I would have shared one with my wife instead of both of us ordering one and leaving half of it on our plates. We were not the only ones, I saw two other tables that were finished before us and also left half of their food on their plate, what a waste. In conclusion, the food was ok, I guess if you are really hungry then this would be the place for you. The staff was really nice, the waitress felt bad about getting my order wrong that she gave me 20% off the bill which was a very nice gesture. All in all I don't think I will be visiting again. Came for breakfast with my GF on a Sunday morning. It took about ten minutes to get seated. Service was really good. Coffee was topped off several times throughout breakfast. Something I noticed was every time the waiter or bus boy came to the table they would pickup any scrap of paper from a straw, sugar packets, or used cream containers. It's a small thing, but we appreciated it. I ordered the eggs benedict, she got the ham and cheese omelette. Both were very good. This place can turn out some tasty food. Nice family run business. A little more smiling would have done the trick ;) Food: I ordered the California omelet which has avocado, cheese and spinach. I added bacon because, well because bacon. All omelet a come with a side of potatoes/ hash browns and toast. My omelet was delish, the Swiss cheese was melted perfectly and gave that extra taste on every bite. I can't believe it's taken me so long to write a review for the Galloping Hen. The Hen is fantastic. Truly the best, most genuinely kind servers in Ventura. Everyone is always over the top attentive, I have backups offering to constantly fill my coffee, and my food is quickly served every time. Above the service, the food is amaze. I get the same thing every time (huevos rancheros) and so I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but it's so delicious I always clear my plate. Everything comes out hot and fresh, modifications are honored perfectly, and I'm never left waiting... For refills, the check, or to order. It's simple, reliably tasty diner-Mexican breakfast hits the spot, and the servers smiles keep me in a good mood, even though I'm essentially filling my body with refried beans, cheesy eggs, and coffee before 10AM on a Monday..... The galloping hen is near my house, so it's a great and easy place to grab a bite. I love their food - I usually get the avocado toast with the hen potato's. They have a cute outside dining area as well. The only issue I've ever had is I tried to customize a burrito once - and they told me they don't do customizations. I'll admit my ordering is complicated - as I try to eat vegan. Not sure if this is a everyday thing, or if the restaurant was just busy, but be weary if you need to do too many changes to your order. I have been a customer of Galloping Hen for a number of years and always thought they had a great breakfast as per my previous review a few years ago. It was and I emphasize was one of our go-to breakfast places in Ventura. As a door-dash driver I went to pick up an order for somebody and usually when you get a delivery request, they tell you about what time the food will be ready, other times they tell you that the order is ready for pickup. I arrived there about 5 minutes after I was told the order was ready for pick and went to the table where the to-go items are left. Right away I was rudely (with a raised voice) and disrespectfully told by the owner to wait outside, even though I was following all protocols, wearing gloves and has a mask on. As far as I'm concerned there is no excuse for treating someone rudely when all they are doing is delivering food for you. read more

Tucked away in an older shopping center in Ventura, this place is a gift from the food gods! I've been meaning to check it out for almost a year just haven't got around to it. This is one of those places where you really have to take a moment and be thankful for the science behind your taste buds and the intricate workings of your brain. Immediately upon entering, I knew I was in for a treat. The vibe was great. Overhearing a group of older men (most likely nearing their 80s) talking about their daily to-dos was also inspiring and a lot of fun. Very soon after I sat down, coffee was poured and the good times began. I ordered the Buckeroo and my sweet Lord was it ever so delicious. The hash browns were perfect, the egg was beautifully fried, the sausage patty was outstanding, the biscuits were some of the best I have ever had and THE GRAVY...THE GRAVY! SO GOOD!!! I'd love to go to this place every day however those men in their 80s, I want to be like them one day and I know of I ate like that every day I might not be able to get to that age. All around a good good place! I've noticed most places that carry The Pepper Plant hot sauce seem to know what they're doing. Holly was my server and she was great! We had some early car business in Ventura. We dropped off our car at Muntz Stereo and decided to go across the street and have breakfast at The Galloping Hen. As you approach, the first thing you see is the Delightful white picket fence that they created for their outside "dining" barriers. We waited to be seated by a very gracious hostess. Because of their location, they were able to create patio dining on both sides of their restaurant. Each booth is divided by a clear plastic portable wall between tables. For some "young" people, this establishment may seem outdated, but for us, an old rooster and old hen, it brings back wonderful memories of the diners of our youth. Immediately, we were offered coffee. There is just something good about diner coffee freshly brewed in a Bunn type Commercial Coffee machine. I ordered the Hen's Pancake breakfast and my husband ordered the Mince Ham Scramble. My eggs were cooked to perfection (overeasy). The plate comes with 2 eggs, 2 pancakes and 2 sausage patties or links, I chose the patties and they were delicious. My pancakes brought back memories of my mother's pancakes that she made with Bisquick mix. Good buttermilk flavor and cooked perfectly. They serve them with whipped butter which is a great choice because you don't have to wait for the butter pats to melt or destroy the pancake while trying to spread it across. My husband's order was also very good. His scrambled eggs were cooked to order, no runny egg. The minced ham was not overcooked and not overly salty. The hen potatoes were very good like home style potatoes that mom used to make. We had endless coffee fills as soon as we finished one cup, so it was always hot. I observed the staff constantly cleaning and sanitizing the tables as soon as other guests left. Their restrooms are small but private. They have plenty of "hot" water and anti bacterial soaps. They also have sanitizers stations along the patio and outside of the restroom area. We felt so comfortable and at ease dining there. So take a morning and have some good "home-style" breakfast. They also have a wonderful lunch menu for you late risers. We will be going back soon.
