Was right in the middle of a big battle in The Outer Worlds and my Xbox One X turned off. Tried turning it back on but it would shut off after a second. I tried all the reboot tricks, let it cool off overnight, still wouldn't work. Usually I follow the Aldous Huxley's Brave New World motto of "ending is better than mending". If it wasn't for this damn microchip shortage I would have used this as an excuse to get a Xbox Series X but due to shortages I was stuck mending. You'd think console repair would be a common thing but nope. There's an iphone repair shop on every corner but there's only a small hand full of game console repair shops. I drove over on Saturday and dropped off my console giving him the symptoms. He told me he'd have a diagnosis by Wednesday but his technician had an family emergency and was out of the shop so it pushed it out a few days. On Friday they narrowed down the issue but wanted to keep testing it out and by Saturday they said the motherboard was bad. After reading articles online about the symptoms I had narrowed it down to this too and the price they quoted me to fix pretty much matched up if I was to buy the part myself and fix it. I gave the OK to fix and by Wednesday it was good as new. They replaced the part, cleaned the insides, reapplied thermal paste, and handed me back my baby. He warned me the hard drive would be wiped and I'll have to redownload games but luckily I had 90% of my library on a external drive and once I went through the set-up the other 10% was still on the drive so I didn't have to do anything. Xbox saves your saved games to the cloud so even that was flawless and my game was waiting for me to jump into the big battle once again. I was looking for a place to get my DS Lite L button micro switch replaced, because I stupidly thought I could repair it myself and ended up melting it onto the motherboard trying to fix it myself using a soldering iron I found Game Geeks on yelp/google and decided to give them a try based on reviews of repairs. I brought my DS Lite in, they gave me a help ticket receipt, then came back again in a couple days. They were able to replace my button easily with a micro-soldering iron, which apparently is hard to find someone locally who knows how to expertly use. Awesome! The shop itself is a little run down, but it's a game store with tons of old gizmos and gadgets, so if it works and they're quality resellers/buyers (which they are), who cares? From what I've seen from their prices on old used gear/games/consoles, they float around market price. So, whether you want to look into buying for collecting or just want to feed your hunger for nostalgia, and if you have to choose between buying on eBay or supporting your local business for similar prices, do the latter! The only gripe I have (and this strictly personal preference) is that once they fix a device, they put stickers on the screw holes to prevent you from tampering with it in the future. I'm not sure if this is a warranty thing, like how DK Oldies has been getting some heat for recently. I get that it's to protect their business from people who purposely tamper with their devices just to turn around and sue the store, but if I'm correct I believe it's illegal to put stickers like that.
