The first time we tried to find the Garden Cafe, my "I don't need a map" BF and I drove around for over 45 minutes trying to find the place. Hint - if you've never been here and don't know the area, map it out. Just do it. You won't be less of a man because you did. Garden Cafe is a hit and miss for crowds -- I've noticed they come in spurts, so either you'll be waiting in line for 20 minutes and probably won't get a patio table, or you'll be first in line and the food will hit the table before you have a chance to get your coffee and head out back. The black mess we have known as Shadow can't stay alone, so he always goes with us to Garden Cafe. He loves it! There's usually another dog or two there, and a bunch of kiddos roaming around the garden and playground equipment on the side of the building. I wish they had a more extensive breakfast menu, but got they have the basics. This past visit, I had two eggs with ham, breakfast potatoes and a biscuit. BF had the french toast. Mine was really filling and a good, hearty breakfast...the biscuit was even soft! BF wasn't crazy about his french toast, but I took a bite and thought he was nuts for thinking so. Back to the patio -- it's just a super neat place. They grow all of their own stuffs, and it's all laid out and labeled for you to wander around in. So bring the furry ones and little ones for a comfortable family breakfast - everyone's bound to have a good time. read more

What a cute place! I don't think I would have EVER stumbled upon it if not for yelp, but I am glad we did. I had pancakes on the brain, and when the hankering sets in, nothing can stop me...except for, wait, what? Chicken and dumplings is your Sunday special? Sold...pancakes who? It comes with 2 sides you say? Cheese grits? I must be tripping, there is no way.....but it was true. I chose cheese grits, oven roasted potatoes and a fresh roll to round out my ultra starchy meal. Chicken and dumplings- warm and yummy, hefty serving. Cheese grits- deeeelishhhh Potatoes- meh The BF got the chicken salad on a croissant. Big shocker. ( He always orders chicken salad). When his plate was presented, he was a little less then pleased with the measly scoop of chicken salad on his croissant. He pouted for a minute and then decided to simply ask for more. They happily obliged by giving him a bigger scoop and apologizing. ( For the record, this chicken salad had apricots and all kinds of stuff it in). He liked it. The outdoor dog friendly patio and garden looks adorable for a warm day....but being that is was cold and nasty, we sat inside and left my little monster at home. The other reviews talked me into talking my Saturday morning buddies into trying out Garden Cafe. And with only one trip as a data point, I think the other reviews are correct. I love to study residential architecture so the Swiss Ave/Munger area is always intriguing. When I saw the address for Garden Cafe I wondered, "Did someone restore an old home and get a restaurant permit?" No, I am guessing this little stretch of Junius, a short one-block area across from a park, was once the location for neighborhood merchants, maybe a grocery or a hardware store or a florist. How cool. The outside and inside eating venues make for nice breakfast or lunchtime choices. The walk-up ordering works fine, too. For food we kept it simple. The first guy ordered an omelet and the next 3 of us ordered the same. The final person ordered soup and salad. We all liked our omelets loads, but they forgot to make the final order. No problem, they promptly fixed the situation and it showed up a few minutes later. All in all, Garden Cafe is a great place for breakfast or lunch if you happen to be in that area of town. read more

Old neighborhood charm and sitting by the Garden is great, but um, where's the yum I say? This is not my favorite kind of 3 stars, but it's definitely worthy of more than 2. I hate to just call the food boring, but I'm already kinda bored writing this review. Hopefully you've had your coffee : D I used to think more highly of this place, but to me it's just oK after multiple visits. I' went on Sunday with the family and it was damn hard to have Penne Pomodoro Saturday, and then this. All I could think about was that Hollandaise sauce at Penne! Now you can't even compare the two places as they are totally different. Nothing about my brunch at Penne was healthy, and that's probably why my belly was asking for it again. I do however know that healthy can taste great. It just takes a little more effort. The menu at Garden Cafe isn't too large which can be nice actually. That is if it's really good. Nothing has really excited me here or ignited my taste buds. I've had multiple omelet combos with potatoes, hash browns and various types of pancakes. I get tired of bugging the the people at the walk up counter for more and more salsa. So, after going a handful of times over the past few years I feel like I've given them a fair shake. Again it's not bad at all, but I've wanted to pick through the garden and pick some herbs to add to my plate. They'd probably frown upon that though. It's so tempting to get the kids in the gang to do a Secret Garden tour and bring back the auntie some fresh basil. Who am I kidding, they'd probably come back with mulch and muddy hands ;) The atmosphere on a beautiful sunny day definitely sets this place apart from other establishments. I'm kind of assuming the surrounding neighborhood and regulars keep them in business. Especially since the Secret Garden is so hidden with almost no chance of getting drive by traffic. Maybe this place is just too healthy for me. I don't know. It's just not the kind of stuff that inspires me to jump out of bed and go. Just kinda makes me wanna roll over and snooze and say "y'all go on without me". They are open from 8-2pm daily, but closed on Mondays. Too bad the place has a nice feel and the food is semi-descent; because beyond the initial smile$ there's a lack of gratitude and a sense of rudeness when they ask folks to leave (during regular hours). I've introduced at least 5 foodies/'influencers 'to this place and the lights have been turned off on us 3 times. The attitude is endorsed by the manager lady (or owner) who directly reminds folks it's time to go (when they take your money & tip, for a 2 course meal purchased 20 minutes earlier). Customers in remaining tables looked at each other with that "is this happening? am I the only one who thinks this is rude?" look. Evidently this has happened to others.. to me 3 times to be exact. Let's hope they read Customer Service & Etiquette 101 before the Spring. Their "lights off" routine has left a sour taste, indeed. read more

First fact- they have a lush garden in the back that serves as the source of all their vegetable sides. Second fact - the setting is in the most delightful neighborhood across an old school surrounded by the quaint, tudor-style homes, which makes it somewhat difficult to find, but it is so worth it when you do. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful with a clientele ranging from young mothers with their cute kids playing in the garden to retired dudes just chilling, because they have the whole day to pass some time over a hearty yet healthy lunch. It reminds me of an old Southern home or bed and breakfast where everyone is a guest of the house eating in the big dining room or common area. It's warm and homey. The staff is eclectic and I guess what you'd call 'hipster.' They are super friendly and personable with a down-to-earth touch. Pun intended. I have eaten here several times and enjoy everything. I especially enjoy their chicken and dumplings and turkey avocado sammy. Their potato salad is also yummy and not too overwhelming with mayo. First off, I can't believe that the average (out of 30 reviews) is just 3 stars. This place is great! Why? They actually have a garden - hence the "Garden Cafe" - and you can sit in it when it's nice outside, and they grow at least half, if not all, of the ingredients that come in their vegi omelette onsite - Yummy!!! The coffee is self serve - you can "doctor it" yourself with big things of sugar and honey, or maple syrup if you prefer. Their sweet potato pancakes are sum of the best in town! And their chicken BLT is one-of-a-kind. They offer a number of sides for lunch items - almost all vegetables grown - and they rotate with the season. And all of this good food and nice ambience is located in a tucked away little gem of a neighborhood off Junius. It's a quaint little block with a park, a children's day care center, and the Garden Cafe - you honestly won't feel like you're in Dallas while you're here. Very good food. The place seats more than it looks. Get in line, order then find a table. Menu is easy to read on the wall behind the counter. And there is a line on Sundays for brunch/lunch, so you have time to figure out what you want. Courteous service. We had the chicken and dumplings (Sunday special) and make your own omelet. The c&c comes with two sides and he had greens and pintos with it. Both were excellent. The omelet, for the price you get three ingredients and then can add other ingredients, plus a side and a bread. I had spinach, mushroom and tomato omelet with cheese grits and a biscuit. The omelet was cooked just right. The cheese grits were good, because they tasted just like mine, except mine have more garlic. :) A check-in gets you a free drink, cookie or pastry. All they had yesterday were brownies, but it was surprisingly good. It looked like it was going to be dry but the inside was soft and dark chocolate. There's a sign that said please wait 30 minutes for all food. We sat expecting to wait a while, but it came out pretty fast. Might not have felt that way, if we hadn't been prepared to wait. A short 10 minute walk from my apartment, this little tucked away cafe is very sweet and charming. The outdoor patio and garden is really peaceful and a nice retreat from my usual city views. HOWEVER- next time I come it will be for coffee only. I ordered the two egg breakfast with mushrooms, toast and bacon. The plate was very small and came out lukewarm. The mushrooms were over seasoned and drowned in oil, (poor shroomies, they already don't need much to be delicious) and the over medium eggs were a puddle of slimey whites (I love a good runny egg but this was borderline ipecac) which was a shame because I could tell they were fresh from the hard working chickens they have on site. The toast was delicious and the bacon was cooked perfectly but for $13 (?!) it's robbery. Also, the poor guy at the register seemed to be extremely overwhelmed and jumpy despite it being a quiet Monday morning. All in all, a nice place to meet a friend for coffee or BYOB mimosas on the patio, but I don't recommend coming here hungry. read more

There has been a lot said here about the quality of the ingredients. Agreed, they are top notch. There is a garden in the back, etc. I feel what I have to add is in other areas. For example, the cooking isn't all that good. I got the veggie sandwich Saturday morning and while it was fresh it was dreadfully dry. It did have a smear of hummus on one side and a smear of pesto on the other but not enough and they added no flavor. The thing was a salad on dry wheat breat. Choke. To be fair that same seedy wheat bread is great for breakfast toast...just not a plus for said sandwich. In fact, for a basic breakfast, they do fine. The cowboy benedict has disappointed on more than one occasion and I've tried the zucchini and okra once each. The zucchini had absorbed way too much something (balsamic vinegar I think) and the okra/tomatoes, though no doubt cooked with great skill so as not to be slimey, had no flavor. I love going there for the ingredients and for the garden seating. (I do not love going there for the overabundance of babies on said garden patio. There seems to always be a crew of tots ready to invade your experience.) I love the cheese grits which are dependably good but they are a side to something which all too often disappoints. Also, while the prices are fairly steep to begin with, here's a tip. Every time you change something there seems to be a fee...and they don't tell you. If your egg plate suddenly costs way more than expected, ask questions. "Would you like wheat toast or a biscuit?" Trick question. One likely comes with an upcharge...AND THEY DON'T TELL YOU. Disappointing experience. As one other reviewer said, 'I want to like this place more than I actually did." It has such potential but is sorely lacking in many areas. Service was incredibly bad, so poor that it was painful to watch. Even more painful to literally wait an hour for my sandwich to arrive. I went with two friends and one related that she had seen service problems here before but this topped all of them. My friend explained to me that they served organic traditional food which was enough to spark my interest. I had the meatloaf and it was awesome. Garden Cafe is a gem. (I wanted to say "hidden gem," since the location is fairly unique. But let's stray away from hipster phrases here.) It's located in a tiny and adorable street in the middle of the beautiful Junius Heights neighborhood, across from a lovely park. The atmosphere surrounding the cafe is reason enough to check it out. There's also the large garden and chicken coup in the back. And the cozy booths and tables inside. And the QR codes to download free eBooks. And the personable staff. And the locals of Old East Dallas. And the BYOB opportunities. And... The food. Maybe "sustainable home cooking" is the best way to describe it. The owners are very conscious of agricultural sustainability and active in the farmers market community of Dallas. It shows through in the food. It's fresh, hearty, and full of flavor. Pros: Pancakes are fluffy as heck. Grits are good. Espresso is on point. And everything mentioned above. Cons: The wait can be long sometimes, especially around lunch and brunch. If the line is to the door, you're looking at 30+ minutes to get your food. However... The kitchen isn't an assembly line of microwaves back there. This place reminds me of tiny family owned restaurants you would find in uptown New Orleans. Just passing through a neighborhood, there's a park and, bam, there's a restaurant inside a house. Of course Yelp turned me on to this place and for me, they were on their game. My omelet with load with jack, mushroom and chorizo. This was an omelet a chicken would eat. Right amount of ingredients and butteryness. And my friend's pancakes were spot on. It was a crisp morning and the place was bustling so it took a while to get my bearings and several trips to get my coffee, water, flatware, syrup, etc. Some days you just wake up with a case of stupids. Wow! Went to a friend's birthday party here for a Sunday brunch and was BLOWN AWAY! What a great (hidden) spot!!! Just so happened the owner was also a friend of my friend, so the owner sat next to me giving me the history of the place...super cool guy! I am a native Floridian and very (let me repeat), VERY critical of Key Lime Pie, which they had on their menu. Once I made this known to the owner, the challenge was made and he stepped up offering me a free piece with a touch of Lemmon Herb from their garden (literally right behind where I was sitting!). Gotta say, that was the BEST KEY LIME PIE I've had since leaving Florida (and even better than "some" I had back home)! I came back to Garden Cafe today, as I was craving an omelette. I got there and there was a line to order, which didn't seem so bad. I stood in it for about 20 minutes, and then was told that there was about a 40 minute wait for food. Given that I had already spent 20 minutes in line just to order, I decided to stay and wait. The cashier told me that it was starting to die down, and the wait may not be as long. Alas, she was wrong. In fact, it was about 45 minutes when my food finally came out. My omelette was really underwhelming...nowhere near as fluffy as it was when I went before, and my toast was not only cold, but it tasted stale. My fruit cup was ok...nothing to call home about though. All in all, I was really disappointed with my experience, and with the quality of the food. I likely won't be back, and that sucks, because I know they can do better. But they really need to get a second register, and really need to find a way to prevent such long waits during busy times. It would be one thing if the food was worth the wait, but I know mine wasn't...I could have gotten the same thing elsewhere, with a shorter wait, and my toast might have actually tasted good. So, I've held off writing this review for awhile because it's such a nice place to sit outside and enjoy the garden. But after today I'm going to let it fly. After waiting in line for 15 minutes to order, we were told that our food would take 45 minutes. We ended up just leaving instead. This has happened on numerous occasions, but usually they don't warn you and we've just sat there captive and waiting. The Garden Cafe needs to figure out a way of getting food out faster. After a lackluster first visit to Garden Cafe (we were told the hashbrowns were amazing only to be told they were out), we went back again. While busy, the restaurant was not overly crowded. Upon ordering we were told they were out of all pancakes and biscuits, but they did have hashbrowns, so only one order was changed this time. After ordering we found a open table that had not yet been bussed. Who would have thought it would take three separate requests to the wait staff to get the table 100% clean? The first person took the plates. A second person took the cups. The final person finally wiped down the table. Then we waited. And waited. And waited for our food. After 30 minutes of waiting we asked of our food and we were told it would be an additional 15 minutes. After 15 minutes we asked for the manager who was able to get the food out five minutes later. I guess the plus side was that the food was hot. When asked if a 45+ minute wait for food is normal, the manager replied "on a Sunday, absolutely". Needless to say I will not come back and I feel sorry for the patrons that visit when the weather is nicer and people sit inside and outside. I doubt they will be happy about waiting over an hour for their food. The food was OK, and that is why it got two stars. Otherwise it would have received one star. read more

Easy five stars. I've lived in the Junius Heights historic district for almost two years, and sadly I hadn't been to Garden Cafe (a mere 8 min walk away) until six months ago. I remember reading mixed Yelp reviews...sadly that might've had something to do with it. Not everything at Garden Cafe is perfect, but this place rocks. It's solid home cooking, with a healthy, organic, and local flare. Their homemade veggie burger is high quality, made with lentils and spices. Their meatloaf is almost as good as my grandma's. Everything is quality. I also like their casual set-up: pay at the counter, get your own drinks and silverware, and then food is delivered by hip young waiters and waitresses. Also, the back patio, in the midst of the garden from which they get their herbs and some veggies, is delightful. A great place to lounge with friends, and very tolerable even in warm temperatures since it's largely shaded. read more

I want to move back to East Dallas just to be closer to the hippie awesomeness that is Garden Café. This is the place you take your friends for breakfast if you want a casual, laid back meal, beside a wonderful garden and urban chicken coop. So, basically, you should always want to eat breakfast here. You may have to wait in line during peak hours, wait for a table during peak hours, and will probably have to be patient for your breakfast during peak hours. However, it is all worth it. There is a free library to occupy your time And a stroll out back during the Spring and Summer will calm your soul. In a word, Garden Cafe is a place for you to recharge your mind and body, smile, and enjoy one of the best breakfasts around. My husband and I usually love this place but hadn't been in a few months. We came for breakfast on a Saturday morning and were very disappointed. Whenever we finally made our way to the counter to order (it took 10-15 minutes and there were 3 people in front of us), we quickly found out they were out of bacon, cheese grits AND biscuits. I mean how is that even possible to be out of all those things by 9:30 AM? We made our way outside to eat on the patio and there were no tables available to sit at. There were probably 5-6 empty tables but there were filled with other customers dirty dishes. I cleared the table myself to make room for my husband and I to sit down. We had the pleasant experience of listening to a weed whacker for the first 10 minutes while we waited - curious as to why they chose a busy Saturday morning to do yard work? Regardless very annoying and distracting. We continued waiting for 35 minutes before the waitress brought out our food. Extremely long wait for something as simple as an omelette and a breakfast sandwich. Upon arrival my dish had 2 HAIRS in the omelette (either from the cook or waitress) - the sad part was I didn't even want return the meal as I had already waited over half of an hour for the meal. The omelette appeared runny and undercooked - in addition my husband had a terrible looking, small discolored tomato on his breakfast sandwich. Overall very very disappointed as we had previously loved this restaurant. Not sure what happened to this place but we definitely do not plan to be back any time soon. read more

If you're looking for a scratch kitchen with great food, a relaxed atmosphere and a soulful musical collection then the Garden Cafe is the place!! My family and a stumbled upon the Garden Cafe on a whim looking for brunch and we are truly glad we did. We loved it from the first moment we walked through the door. The staff talked us through the menu and everything we had did not dissapoint. From the pancakes, french toast, omelets, cheese grits, and chorizo scramble (yes we sampled for brunch) everything was light and delicious. I highly recommend you come check out the Garden Cafe. Twice this place came to my rescue when we were trying to figure out where to eat. The first time it was when my parents were visiting. They: wanted somewhere that was inexpensive. We: wanted to avoid fast food. This was a fantastic compromise, with almost everyone getting the delicious chicken and veggies. Everything was fresh and cooked well. We didn't realize there was seating in back, though with the TX heatwave we may not have cared, anyway. The second time was when a friend and I were trying to find somewhere to eat after visiting the Arboretum. She's a vegetarian, so we wanted somewhere that was reasonably close and that she could enjoy, but that wasn't a chain restaurant. They were out of the veggie burger, so she opted for the hummus and veggie sandwich, which she really enjoy. I went back to the chicken and veggies...plus the free cookie that I got with my Yelp check-in! The second time we partook of the outdoor seating in the back. You really got the sense that you were dining in the backyard garden of friends. Around you were growing many of the things that you were eating. This is a lovely restaurant that combined excellent, fresh food in a charming atmosphere at reasonable prices (chicken + 2 veggies + choice of bread is $9). I'll definitely be back. read more

Garden Cafe has been going down hill for a while and today it reached the bottom. We paid $80 for a breakfast that took 1 hour and 5 minutes to come out and was basically inedible. They said nothing about any wait when we checked out - we would never have stayed. After 40 minutes we finally got a hold of the manager to ask about our food and she snapped back "It's a 45 minute wait." There was no apology for not having told us at checkout. When the food finally came, all of the meals were undercooked and I found 2 strands of hair in my omelette. We'll be crossing this place off our list. My wife and I have been fairly frequent visitors to Garden Cafe for about 2 years. Love the space as others have said and we think the food is pretty good, however the service we've had the last two times we've been there has been insanely bad. We waited an hour and a half this morning for breakfast and about an hour the last time we went. The space and the food just can't make up for the unacceptable wait. Breakfast does not take that long to cook. I'm not sure if they have only 1 cook who takes his sweet time or what but on both occasions we've seen multiple tables walk out before getting their food and there just doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency by the kitchen staff. The food runners are constantly apologizing to tables. It's just uncomfortable. Such a shame too because it's a great place to enjoy the weather when it's like this but we won't be back. read more

I really cannot say enough great things about this little restaurant! If you didn't know about, you would probably never go inside...its in a kind of strange location but don't let that deter you! The food is yummy, fresh and just delicious! They have a garden out back where they grown most of their own herbs, and even some of their own fruits and vegetables! Everything is incredibly fresh like grandma used to make and SOOO good! They have amazing croissants that are so flakey, rich and buttery! Give it a shot, try their fresh veggies, their pastries (although I would skip the cinnamon roll) and help support this small local East Dallas Business. It really is a great place! The service was terrible and the food was mediocre at best. It was a 30-minute wait in the line to order -- and it wasn't a long line. The place was barely half full. Once we got to the front, we realized that the kid taking the orders was the hold up. We'd had 30 minutes to stare at the menu, so we had our orders down pat, but he still got them wrong and we had to repeat ourselves several times. The turkey melt had dry, stringy turkey that looked like it was leftover from last Thanksgiving. The chicken fried steak was okay, but not worth the trouble. If you sit by the garden, you can watch the kids who prepare the food sit around and smoke, in case you enjoy that. read more

We went for breakfast. Considering that we were going to pay a lot (26.50 for a turkey melt, An omelet, coffee and fountain drink) we expected more. My boyfriends turkey melt was beautiful, And his cheese grits, alright. My omelet was good, But very oily and my roasted potatoes were awful. They were more like chips and looked like leftovers. The ones that were okay, tasted delicious. Mind you,ive been there several times and the roasted potatoes are great! I just dont know what happened today. read more
