Cute restaurant off the beaten path. I had the turkey melt, but had them switch the bread to wheat bread. It was great. I love that the turkey was chopped in to chunks rather than just plain, flat, lunchmeat. I also had the lentil delight. The cashier was nice enough to let me try it before I ordered it. It was good, but it probably wasn't the best choice of a side dish on a hot, sunny day. If you check in on Yelp, you can get a free drink so I had a cappucino. I was going to have a latte, but they didn't have skim milk so I opted for a drink with a little less milk (at the good suggestion of the barrista). I got scrambled eggs with chorizo and a side of cheese grits. Eggs came corn tortillas and a nice salsa, not too hot, very flavorful. Table mates got country boy breakfast, eggs and biscuits, and pancakes with blueberry compote and a side of bacon. Serving sizes are just right in my view. No leftovers but no one left starving or feeling like a glutton. Only complaints was the coffee which was bitter like the beans were over-roasted. Great little cozy place for a relaxing breakfast with a friend. The atmosphere is peaceful, but service is slow, so don't come here if you're in a hurry. They have a lot of locally sourced, organic, and healthy foods, but it's not very clear which items are or are not. I like their chorizo and eggs, and their cappuccino was pretty good. They also have bottled kombucha tea, which my sister was really happy about. Prices are pretty good, considering the hipster-y ingredients. Overall, a relaxing place to eat yummy but healthy food while feeling good that you are supporting local businesses. Ate dinner on the porch which was lovely! ...But, that's where the good times came to a screeching halt! ...My friend and I each ordered the exact same thing...salad, shrimp w/polenta and collard greens, strawberry shortcake, etc....AND, we both got desperately ill. How about adding a little garlic, a spritz of lemon juice and a sprinkling of coarse salt? It will kick them up a notch for sure!!! The veggie burger had good flavor but I fail to understand why restaurants still serve those pale, tasteless tomato slices. If you can't get good tomatoes, then chop up some cherry tomatoes. They have a lot more flavor and look beautiful. OK... so I guess by now you know I like to cook. But, I go out to get something I might not get at home... and hopefully, better. The roll was a blah roll as you buy in the grocery store. Nothing special. Would be nice if the tables were resurfaced as I could just imagine all the germs harboring in the grout and tile that looked quite scuzzy. This is evident in the photo. Made the mistake of looking in the kitchen as I exited the ladies room. Garbage on the floor and did not look clean from my point of view. This has to be one of the best places to eat in Dallas,Texas! Me and some friends found this place during our last day in town. It was in walking distance from our Airbnb, and we decided to try it out. All of the food was delicious, my chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly. I especially loved that all of the herbs were grown right outside of their garden! Another great thing about this place is that you can bring your own alcohol and enjoy it outside their patio. They will even help you keep your drinks cold and bring out a wine opener if you need one. I've had ups and downs with Garden Cafe (things seemed very off for a couple visits a year or so ago so I didn't return for quite awhile). Happy to say it seems like they're back on track with my last few visits once I returned again. They know how to do carbs right! The buttermilk pancakes are the best in town, and I love their biscuits. Great cheese grits. My boyfriend gets the country boy Benedict and it's been perfect lately. Tried their cold brew coffee and was very pleased to have a low-acid coffee option there. They do occasionally have a wait if you go during peak times but I genuinely don't mind much as long as they give a heads up at the register (they do!). I will say they do seem to run out of chicken salad sandwiches the last two times I've brought my old neighbor which seems like poor planning for a popular item. Really, it's one of the best deals in town, though. Considering the local ingredients in much of the selections and the reasonable price point for delicious food that really will leave you quite full, a 30 minute wait for food doesn't bother me if I have my coffee and enjoyable company. Love this place so much! The food is consistently exceptional and I love that they use ingredients from the quaint, eponymous garden out back. The patio is lovely even when it's warm out -- the fans, misters, plentiful shade, and charming garden setting make it a perfect spot to linger with an iced coffee and a magazine or good book. I wanted to like this place, but I was left severely disappointed. I went here with my family on a rainy Saturday. We wanted to get something that was all home cooked and yummy. I've heard good things about this place so maybe they were having an off day? Still I was very disappointed. My hubby ordered the chicken fried steak with roasted potatoes and cheese grits. My youngest had the pancakes. My oldest had French toast. Then I had the veggie burger with fruit. My veggie burger was so mushy I really couldn't enjoy it. I will say it had good flavor but the texture was a complete turn off for me. It was so mushy that the onions tomatoes and lettuce sunk into the burger The bread they used on the veggie burger was not a bun it was just toasted sliced bread.‍The fresh fruit they used definitely seemed like the packaged fruit you'd buy from a gas station. My hubby's chicken fried steak was okay and he liked it so that was good. The roasted potatoes were okay as well but, most of them were almost like slivered potatoes. Honestly if I'm ordering roasted potatoes I want just that. I feel like they were probably running low on potatoes, so they sliced them on the thin side to make more. He did not like the cheese grits because it was very wet almost slimy. The corn muffin that came with it was good and so was the biscuit. Super yummy buttery dense biscuit. The French toast was good and so were the pancakes. I wish they would put something with those items but it was fine there was enough sides at our table for them to pick off of. The customer service was really lacking at this restaurant. The cashier didn't really know what to suggest to us. We let her know we've never been there before and the only thing she suggested was the pancakes. I felt bad for her because she didn't really seem like she knew what to do. So we just ordered what we know we like but the food was disappointing after being told that this place was a good restaurant. We never had the same waiter or waitress either which was weird. We had an older lady at one point that had a bad attitude. She took our number from the table after only delivering one meal and asked while walking away if we only had such n such left. She only said the kids meals so I made sure to tell her about mine. She rolled her eyes and walked away. Then there was another lady who brought us our other meals. She was very pleasant. She greeted us and handed off our food with a smile. Then there was a younger male waiter that was nice. He asked how the food was so I told him about my veggie burger. The poor thing didn't know what to say. I felt bad that they didn't know what to do. I really think y'all need to train your employees better. You need to be showing/ telling them what to do in certain situations. If I was waiting a table that had a problem with their food I'd either ask if they want it remade, or if they want something different, or I'd get a manager. Went to this cafe for a lunch and was seated around 12:45. The restaurant did not seem too busy, but after we ordered we noticed everyone else got their food and left all while we were there before we got our food. After waiting close to 1.5 hours for our food, we were served food that was good, but definitely not worth the wait. It would have been slightly better if the wait staff said "Sorry for the wait" or at least acknowledged we had to wait such a long time, but that did not happen with the waitress or even the manager we talked to as we left about our experience. I guess if you decide to come here, make sure they don't forget about you or your food! read more

My sister held her wedding here. It was incredible for many reasons. 1. Nichole, the manager, was a God-send. Her staff was professional and efficient. After they worked their magic the restaurant and outdoor space looked incredible. They were incredibly kind and a joy to work with. 2. The space itself is fantastic. It's a smaller space, so you can't hold a huge wedding. But it is perfect for a smaller intimate wedding. 3. The food. Holy cow. We had salad, which was fantastic. Then we had grilled chicken with mashed potatoes and collard greens. The chicken was so tasty and moist. It was truly perfection. All in all I cannot recommend this as a venue more. The indoor seating area was charming. Lots of character and ambiance. I opted to sit outside. It was like sitting in grandmothers back yard. Lovely covered eating area. Sprinkler rotating back and forth over the gardens' veggies, someone bent over snipping herbs, the sound of birds chirping away. Quite quaint. And to be fair, normally the cheese grits are super awesome. Today they were only awesome. I mean, "only awesome" is hardly something to complain about. If you've never been there, I'll try to sum it up: good, wholesome, some-items-can-be-considered-healthy-while-others-certainly-aren't-but-it-is-granny-style-delicious food. You'll either like Garden Cafe or you won't. Personally, I love Garden Cafe. I've lived and eaten in Los Angeles (9 years), Austin (2 years), and most recently Dallas (2nd year now, although Dallas is where I'm from and where I inevitably returned to) and it's up there as far as memorable places to have food (as far as I'm concerned, but to each his own). One thing I forgot to mention: being relatively small and fairly popular- they can run out of things. I took my mom here a few weeks ago and as it turned out they were out of the first three things she ordered. This quaint cafe is nestled in the perfect location close to downtown Dallas. Let me first start with the awesome customer service! I've been in two Sunday's in a row(don't judge me) and each time I was greeted with smiles and great conversation while I waited. Even when I left they all told me bye and to put the icing on the cake they even made a point to use my name through out our conversation! Pretty cool right! Now on to the good stuff! The "Sweet Potato Pancakes!" OMG these are the best pancakes I've EVER had!!! They were moist, flavorful, and huge! When my plate came out it was missing the broccoli and fruit bowl but they brought it out after I asked about it. Both the broccoli and the zucchini were soooo oily! The flavor was great but just way way too much oil. I have not been back to Garden Cafe since the hostess made my friend, her mini australian shepherd and I move tables after being seated on the patio. A very high maintenance mother with her husband and two toddlers were sat next to us after we placed our order. One of the kids kept getting up from the table and walking around. He went into the dirt and picked up rocks and started throwing them at my friends dog. Since the parents were not following the kid, he inevitably got too close to my friends dog and startled him, causing him to bark. The mother apologized and told the kid not to get close to other peoples dogs and she apologized to us. After that, it was more obvious that the mother did not like that she was sat next to a table that had a dog. She proceeded to call over the hostess and whispered for them to fix the situation. The hostess offered for her and her family to be relocated to another table, she decided she liked her spot and wanted us to move. The hostess then came over to our table and said "I'm sorry, I heard there's a situation here". We looked at her, didn't know that there was even a problem besides this mother needing to keep better track of her kids. The hostess said "I heard there was a situation, would it be okay if you moved over a table?". Confused, we just decided to move and not cause a scene. The rest of the visit was awkward because the mother was whispering to her husband and texting him while he was walking with one of the kids. It was pretty annoying that they let some Karen completely ruin our experience on the patio. We explained our side of the story after seeing the woman call over the hostess. We weren't even checked on by a manager or comped anything for the inconvenience. read more

I had high hopes for this place as read as a place to visit if you wanted to get a Chicken Fried Steak. So I hopped on over here even though not close to downtown Dallas. It is located near a park and could be any local suburban cafe from the outside. There was seating both indoors in seats and booths as well as lovely outdoor courtyard sitting area which would be lovely on a nice day. You order and pay at the counter. Get your number and choose a seat. The service is friendly and very nice which probably helped boost my rating. I ordered a Lemonade which was really good as tasted homemade. I went with the aforementioned Chicken Fried Steak which came With Gravy, 2 Sides And Bread. Whilst the steak tasted nice it was slightly burnt in a couple of areas so are around that. I chose the Cheese Grits and Cream Corn as my sides. Looks were deceptive as thought the yellow one was corn and the white one was grits but it was the other way around. I preferred the corn as it was creamy and bit of corn and onion in it. The grits are an acquired taste. It didn't have enough cheesy flavour for me. The bread seemed to be omitted as well but didn't bother asking them for it as wasn't going to finish my steak anyway. Overall as it was one of the places to go from the recommendations on an article I read, I wouldn't go out of my way for it (maybe they were having an off day). read more

Lived in the neighborhood for two years. What once was a great gem has drastically changed. Each time we've visited over the last year they are always out of core breakfast treats before 10am on Saturday. Either we just have bad luck or it's typical. Today out of items were syrup (therefore no pancakes or waffles), house bacon, and wheat toast. Among other disappointments were an hour wait for food (after you order). The restaurant was only 50% full in the front of restaurant. It's a shame really as we watched 15 people walk out. Hope they figure out inventory management that will allow them to serve a complete menu through the breakfast crowd. read more

I'd heard about this place from my roommate and it was on my list for a while before I found a Groupon. I figured why not? My friend and fellow yelper, Stacy Y. came out here on Easter for brunch. I redeemed mine for an OJ before I saw the girl at the register pour from a generic brand juice. Regretted it instantly but too late. No problems using the Groupon! The food: I ordered buttermilk pancakes and hashbrowns. The pancakes were massive and at first bite tasted good but then I noticed an odd after taste sort of like sugar alcohol (you know like diet drinks can have). I tried ignoring it but I couldn't. It tasted weird. The hashbrowns were good at least. Service was great and everyone friendly. Of note, I did feel a little nauseous the rest of the day and I kept tasting my meal at the back of my throat. My parents have been in town visiting from Minnesota, and we've eaten out almost every meal. For our last breakfast together before I took them to the airport, we went to Garden Cafe. I'd been in the past, and liked it, so I decided to take them, and I was really disappointed! The cashier was very unfriendly, not a "hello" or a "welcome in" or even a smile. We ordered and had a seat in a booth. There were only two other tables occupied in the restaurant. The omelet that I ordered was okay...but the biscuit was just awful! I think it was two or three days old! There was also no butter to be seen, so we had to go ask the unfriendly cashier for butter, which he did get for us. Overall, I wouldn't waste my money here when there are so many other wonderful breakfast places in Dallas! read more

Best biscuits I have had ina long time! So moist and delicious. Super special place as this is where my oldest son would take me on a date, but now he is gone to college and here I sit alone.
