We've tried this place a couple times, as my mom lives locally. I wanted to like it, but going there just always turns into a fiasco and we always leave with the same complaints. 1. It gets really loud, really really loud in there when it's busy and it doesn't seem like they've done anything to mitigate that. Yeah sure it's cute, but there's nothing to absorb the sound, it just bounces around. 2. Our server never seems to know the menu well, we've had to prompt them to tell us about the specials and when you ask questions about a dish i.e. Ingredients or preparation they are unable to answer and also unwilling to successfully seek an answer. This to me is a cardinal sin-how can you expect to sell something you can't describe? 3. Maybe it's because of the staffs lack of knowledge about the dishes but our experience with the food has been very hit or miss. It seems each time we've gone a dish has arrived at the table that either we didn't order, or we never would have if the server had successfully described it. The wait was just too long. I am surprised really they wouldn't let us make a reservation since it's only 6 people coming to dinner not 7! Yes we were shocked. Okay we got there at 7 she said we will get seated within the hour and you can't leave. 835 she gets us the table. On top of it all didn't get served for an hour. Service was not great the food was okay was not happy with the chicken but the roasted carrots were good. Yes it was loud , busy and the atmosphere seemed fun. What a fantastic restaurant! My brother was in town so I took him for an early dinner knowing good and well how popular it is, making sure we would be able to be seated. We opted for the bar and were attended to by Laura. She was so helpful with our questions, served a great cocktail and was knowledgeable of the beers served directing my brother to 3 different selections. We ordered the dozen oysters, the fish tacos and split the soft shell crab entree. Everything was excellent! We especially loved the 2 hot sauces served with our oysters and tacos. When Laura saw how much we loved them she let us know that she was the maker of it. Poor Devil Hot Sauce Co. she told us where it's sold and you bet we will be picking up a few bottles. We had very high hopes for this restaurant, but sadly left underwhelmed by the food, service and atmosphere. The restaurant is so loud that it was near impossible to talk to my family without yelling - and I'm not usually sensitive to noisy spots. The service was slow and not particularly attentive. As for the food: The tilefish was too fishy (maybe that's just tilefish?), though the sides were admittedly good. It was a similar situation for the roast chicken - the butter beans were very tasty but the chicken itself was very and not terribly flavorful. The mac and cheese was delicious, the side salad was simple and good, and the budino dessert was great, but overall, the solid sides couldn't make up for the slow service, high price tag and mediocre food. Germantown has been yearning for a restaurant/nightspot for years. So understandably, many locals are very excited about Gaskins, and reluctant to say anything negative. I count myself in that group. But my first three experiences have not been very good. Details below... On the positive side, the place is tastefully designed (though somewhat predictable, as far as trendy conventions now go in the Hudson Valley). There are multiple areas from which to choose: a small bar, an outdoor deck, and a large dining room with both booths and tables. The dining room definitely needs some soundproofing. The waitstaff is young, hip, and pleasant, and the host ingratiating. However, other than the pleasant décor--and the fact that it is the only game in town--Gaskins needs to up its game on most every level. On our first visit, we were initially charmed by the short menu, which seemed both fun, balanced and locally sourced. But a macaroni and cheese appetizer was unnecessarily oily. One of our party was vegetarian, and not being in the mood for pasta, chose what turned out to be a very strange and unappetizing-looking mountain of stuff... mainly chickpeas. Everything was too salty. Figuring this was just beginner's blues, and that things would improve, some friends tried to make a reservation for a large party for several days beforehand. But no one seems to pick up the phone or messages until well into Thursday evening. And so no return confirmation was made until long after we were sitting at a Hudson restaurant instead. The owners might want to make sure they check messages during the first half of the week. Lastly, we tried again on the late side on a weekend, and found that the kitchen was already closed. Since the bar was still open and we'd driven to go there, we sat down for a drink at the bar. But the surly, monosyllabic bartender seemed irritated to have to fill any more orders. Our drinks seemed to have little or no alcohol, and we noted that when we paid he did not give us the coin portion of our change. That was deducted from the modest tip he had not even really earned. One other note/warning: There is almost no cell service at this location. Really, Germantown needs a place like this, and the owners seem too earnest and skilled for these problems to remain. But we won't go back for several months in hopes that things smooth out between now and the late Fall. read more

Good food with sassy service. I like it. My appetizer and main course were delicious. The sweet cream ice cream was crazy good. But the dining room is unbearably noisy. It is a din. The outdoor seating -- over a parking lot -- is really uncomfortable. The owners have never sat on the wooden benches at the long table. Bad idea. Really bad idea. First time eating here, we had the borrata as an appetizer. It was a bit too salty, but okay. As an entree, I had a shrimp and linguine dish. The shrimp tasted spoiled and the whole dish was almost inedible. I would have sent it back, however after dropping our food, we did not see our server again until she dropped the check. It was busy, but...no "how is everything?" Or "can I get you anything?" On top of this, we were celebrating a birthday and had to share a big table with a family including two children who alternately complained and played on iPads the whole time. It was very disappointing all around. Since then, I've been in twice more and both times were much better. We had our own tables and the servers remembered we existed. Roasted beets were delicious and the burger was very good, perfectly cooked (though a bit pricy) and another pasta dish (NO seafood this time) was tasty and good portion. If you are tired of long complicated menus that challenge your ADD then Gaskins is your new go to place. Their menu has something for everyone and it's all great. We were a party of 6 who hadn't seen each other in a while and we were so busy laughing and telling stories that we ordered everything on the Menu. No kidding. As each dish was delivered our conversations stopped and were replaced by a "Wow!". The place was jammed inside and out, the bar scene was an eclectic mix of sophisticated locals and weekend visitors from all over. The service was seamless, the food was inventive and solid (Fried Chicken) and the portions were shareable. Our recommendation is to GO, ENJOY, and HAVE FUN. read more

Great food, very friendly stuff, although the server seemed to be having a bad day. The only downside and the reason for 3 start is that the food took 2hrs without exaggeration. We came at 6:15 and were not down till 8:30we did have appetizers so that saved us, but there should be no reason for a pasta and a pork chop to be cooked for 120 minutes. During COVID when only outdoor seating is currently allowed, my friends took my here to celebrate my birthday. It was the day after RBG passed away and that night temperatures were in the low 40's. The restaurant emailed us earlier that day suggesting we bring blankets due to the weather. They also had multiple heaters outside, but I can confirm the blankets saved us from having a rather unenjoyable evening out in the cold. Thank you for this recommendation! We also ordered hot toddy's to help keep us warm. This was an excellent suggestion by the staff. I ordered the Mac & cheese, fingerling potato's, duck, and for dessert, a plum and apple crisp. I also got to try the pork loin. All the food was magnificent! The mac&cheese and potatoes were perfection. I only wish I had more room in my stomach to try more items. During our meal the staff kindly asked if we would mind if they could perform a vigil for RBG. This was a common event people were doing around the country and the whole staff quietly came out and lit sparklers away from all patrons, said a few kind words, and went straight back to work. Our server came by and apologized after which seemed completely unnecessary to me considering our whole table was touched they would do this and the event wasn't at all disruptive to our meal. One guy did end up complaining, but he was also eating alone- I wonder why no one wanted to eat with him...anyway, after such an amazing meal, our server and the host (and possibly manager/owner) came out with a birthday cake my friends got me from a bakery in Hudson. They sang me happy birthday and cut it for us. They even waved their cake cutting fee for our table without us asking for it. At the end of the meal, our server also inquired about how effective the heaters were as it was the first night they had to use them. Hudson Valley EatBeat's 4th Meetup was held here at Gaskin's. We enjoyed an assortment of hand-crafted cocktails - The Germantowner, an old favorite, and a couple of new additions to the menu: a tea-infused gin drink and a pineapple mezcal concoction - All were quite refreshing for a hot summer day. When it came to ordering food there was no limits.....each of us ordered an appetizer, an entree and a dessert (two of us ordered an extra side dish of Baked Mac & Cheese to go with our entrees). Everything was superb and I now have first-hand experience with why there is so much great "talk" about this newly opened hidden gem (they just celebrated their one year anniversary). A couple of us were lucky enough to have leftovers to take home - we joked about raiding each other's houses for those leftovers, especially the Fried Chicken! I loved this place. It was packed on a Friday night maybe a half hour wait. Fresh bread came out delicious and we asked for more and got it promptly. Our waitress was wonderful, excellent service. I had the clams and sausage dish which had potatoes and corn, in this wonderful broth and 2 slices of the delicious bread toasted to dunk into the delicious broth. From the Germantown Manhattan made with exquisite local bitters, to clam and bacon flatbread, beets with blood orange on a bed of creme fraiche, to the bluefish with watercress, shaved fennel and carrot purée (which would be called foam anywhere south of Brewster) the entire dining experience was superb. Wonderful dinner at Gaskins! I live in Brooklyn and was asking a few people in the Hudson area for restaurant suggestions and they all concurred on this one. The food was great and the wait staff was warm, attentive and very accommodating. The blue fish and pasta dishes were prepared beautifully. And the homemade ginger ice cream for dessert was the perfect end to the meal. The other dessert, an almond cake, was just average but everything else was over the top. It's a bit noisy as other reviews have said but that didn't ruin the evening. I would definitely come back again!! read more

Nick & Sarah Suarez have created an absolute winner in Germantown. A warm and inviting space overlooking Main Street offers excellent farm to table comfort food. Our group of 8 all gave high marks to each aspect of the meal and to the efficient and attentive service. Most at the table opted for the burger, which earned uniform praise, along with perfectly prepared french fries. Wood-roasted chicken with turnips and cauliflower was filling and satisfying, but the real winner of the evening were the flawless shrimp tacos offered as a special. This item will encourage me to clear the calendar for their occasional "taco takeovers". Don't miss the mac and cheese side dish; a perfect amount of cheese and deeply satisfying. Desserts are not to be skipped, as the lemon polenta cake earned a rave review. The Bourbon butter bread pudding was also excellent, but half the portion would have been equal value (even with the perfectly whipped cream liberally applied over the top) as whatever liquor the raisins had been marinated in (bourbon?) started to dominate the taste buds by the end of the portion. Coffee comes out for the table in a french press. Beverage list is well curated with names like Hill Farmstead occupying a six-tap masthead, with about another 20 selections via bottle. We largely skipped hard alcohol but one person who ordered the negroni off the cocktail list reported that it was excellent. An interesting wine list offered a manageable, but diverse range of selections at reasonable prices, with about a half-dozen offerings by the glass. read more

Less than a week ago, my family and I relocated to nearby Gallatin from NYC ... after several days of getting unpacked and housecleaning, we designated May 28th as official "take a break day", as it was Memorial Day, but more importantly it was my most favorite lady's birthday ... I scoured the Google machine for relatively nearby restaurants, to take her for dinner and found Gaskins In Germantown. Let me say, I am so glad we did! Gaskins is every bit is good as any restaurant that could be found in NYC. It is one of Columbia County's gems. For appetizers, my lady had the Caesar salad, which was seasoned and dressed perfectly and I had the spinach salad, which had shallots, small chunks of bleu cheese and was seasoned with just the right amount of citrus dressing. The main courses were roast duck breast, accompanied with grilled asparagus, black lentils, mint and creme fraiche for her and the sirloin steak, which came with fingerling potatoes and a homemade salsa verde ... delicious and perfectly prepared on both counts. The food, decor and service were excellent. My lady and I were very pleased. We will definitely dine there again! read more

I've been to Gaskin's twice now -- once on a Friday evening and again on Sunday for their "Easter supper." The restaurant was a bit louder and energetic on Friday evening, but Sunday was a much more relaxed vibe inside. Both times, my partner and I had no trouble getting a table for two, but I could see how summer weekends might be difficult. The ambience is tasteful, and the waitstaff are decidedly friendly and inviting. All of the suggestions, from cocktails to starters to mains, have been great, and the food has been nothing short of excellent. Standouts: their burger, a special croque monsieur, and a merguez sausage flatbread. We're planning to make this a regular Sunday evening spot, and I wish them nothing but success as the business settles in. read more

We have been there three times and it was bad three times. On one visit my wife ordered fish tacos and asked the waitress if they could prepared gluten free and was told yes. I ordered a burger. 25 minutes later she came out with the burger and at that point told us the tacos couldn't be done gluten free. So I'm sitting there with a burger and she has to wait another 30 minutes. What kind place does that? The answer is a shitty place. Never AGAIN. read more

Food and drinks consistently great. The owner's brother has a brewery- they serve his beer. We had a mussel and scallop paella, burrata, roasted carrots ( so good with some 'beiber' chili oil, pickle juice, creme fraiche, light dusting of fennel pollen) , roasted chicken, gnaudi, earl grey tea ice cream, bundini, pistachio cake. To sum it up, food at this place pretty much sucks. The service was great. They seem to turn over tables efficiently. We had the Burrata with pesto, which was the only tasty thing we ate. The cauliflower special was limp and not a good dish, no need to make this, ever. The duck was extremely salty, lacking imagination. The delicata slices that came with the Brussels sprouts next to the duck were the only good things on the plate. Then we had the polenta cake. It was pretty much the equivalent of a dry, 3-day old corn bread. Overall, the service is very good, the ambiance is great and the food pretty much sucks based on the selection we had. read more
