We usually get take out. First time eating in at this location. There is a large event space available for rent. Nostalgic of the Americanized Chinese food I grew up with including the paper zodiac placemats and tea cups. There is a bar, and a mix of tables and booths. We were seated right away. Hot & Sour Soup - the perfect balance of black pepper spice and sourness. As good as I remember. Sometimes I'll ask for half-and-half - half hot & sour and half egg drop soup. General Tso's Chicken - pleasantly surprised with the large and tender chicken pieces with less breading. Did not taste any spice, but it did come with the spicy red chili peppers you can eat for more spice. Great flavor otherwise. Curry Chicken - green curry with tender chicken and I liked all the veggies that gave it great texture - green peppers, onions, celery, small chunks of water chestnuts, peas and carrots. Marked as spicy on the menu, but I tasted absolutely nothing spicy. I can no longer tolerate much spice so that was surprising. I am limiting white rice consumption so I wish they had brown rice as an option. Only white rice or fried rice available. I just ate our meals witbout rice. After seeing this restaurant take first place in the "Best of West Michigan" vote for Chinese restaurants my wife and I decided to give it a try. This is a big place with a very nice dining area - clean, well-lit, and not loud or "tight" at all. Service was impeccable - fast, friendly, and accurate. Why only three stars, you ask? The food was, at best, average. My wife and I both like spicy food, and prefer seafood for our protein. So, she ordered the Hunan Shrimp lunch special (with hot sour soup and white rice) and I ordered the Kung Pao Shrimp (with hot sour soup and fried rice). The soup was a bowl, not a cup, and was FULL of meat, vegetables, egg, and tofu. It looked great. The taste was...unusual compared to others I've had. The "hot" seemed exclusively due to a huge amount of black pepper. The "sour" was barely discernible - no trace of vinegar or similar. Very hearty, vegetables nice, but the overall taste was meh. Our entrees arrived and they were HUGE. You definitely get your money's worth here. The crab cheese was nice - crispy with a decent amount of filling. The eggrolls we got were very different. My wife's was mostly cabbage, while mine had a nice variety of things in the filling, the best eggroll I've had in a while. I definitely appreciated both plum sauce and hot mustard - it's rare to get the latter these days. My fried rice was decent - not bad but not distinctive, and my wife thought her white rice was a bit overcooked. The entrees were the source of our biggest disappointment. The sauces on the Hunan and Kung Pao were bland and indistinguishable. They tasted absolutely identical - like brown gravy with a few peppers tossed in. Despite a little "burn" the sauce was reminiscent of grandma's beef gravy. Vegetables in both dishes were nice - good variety and nicely crisp. Shrimp was cooked perfectly and there were many. Despite the positives, they just couldn't overcome how bland the sauce was. I will probably give this place another shot and not order the same food. Stopped by here for lunch recently on a whim. Unfortunately just really not good Chinese food. The place was PACKED for a Friday at noon. That was surprising but I also thought that meant it would be pretty good food! First, we didn't really get asked what we wanted to drink. Not sure if that's normal for here but I would've gotten a pop if they had asked. I had the sesame chicken lunch which comes with soup, 1 Rangoon, 1 egg roll, and your entree with steamed or fried rice. I chose the sweet and sour soup it was okay. It had good flavor. The texture of the tofu in it was not great. I thought the texture of the chicken used for the sesame chicken was tough and chewy. The fried rice was way over cooked, like so mushy. The egg roll was pretty much just cabbage and nothing else. All of the food was just very bland. I don't know. Maybe they had an off day. The person I was dining with didn't like their meal of general tsos chicken either. Probably won't be back since there are so many other Chinese food options around. read more

can never go wrong with First Wok! been here several times with family before but today i went here for lunch with my husband and my mother-in-law. it seemed lowkey busy for a friday afternoon but i'm not sure if that's their normal. the service was pretty quick and straight to the point, no small talk or anything like that. this was my first time eating here during lunch and i was surprised by the portion. i was pretty hungry and i barely finished my plate because i was so full. i got the mongolian beef and you get to choose between white or fried rice. it also came with soup, an eggroll and a crab rangoon. everything was delicious and not too salty! my mother-in-law's food came out a few minutes after ours and there was an extra crab rangoon on her plate for her which was super nice. she also forgot her to-go box and the waitress came outside to give it to her which was so appreciated. overall i'd come back to First Wok to dine in for lunch! simple, quick, delicious, and average price (nowadays) - not too bad! read more

This is a place to go if with my White in-laws, and they are really really White. No sharing of big dishes here, no spices, no MSG, no chop sticks, not a word of Chinese to be heard. For lunch, everyone can order their own bland Americanized pseudo Chinese food on a Western style plate and the service is excellent. They remember regulars, it's a very friendly place in that Western Michigan way. They call their crab Rangoon "crab cheese" just so you know. Clean and comfortable, the food is definitely edible. read more

YUUUMMMMMY! I ordered takeaway for lunch today and was shocked at the LARGE PORTION size! The picture below is the LUNCH offering from First Wok. I ordered cashew chicken without green pepper and added mushrooms ‍ instead; I asked for fried rice instead of white rice (no problemo!). It also included an egg roll PLUS a crab cheese with a cute little mini sweet & sour sauce! Needless to say, this made for a few meals for me. The customer service from phoning my order to pick up was spot on! Very professional and helpful. Plenty of parking out front made for a quick pickup, and my order was ready in about 10 minutes. Very clean and bright inside. Lots of tables FULL of people having lunch. Nice to see for a locally owned business. Highly disappointment with this Chinese restaurant. Nothing my husband and I ordered was good, didn't taste anything like Chinese food. My chicken tasted so bland, just boiled served some frozen veggies in a white sauce. My husband ordered Chinese chicken and it was not good at all either. We are it because we were hungry and didn't want to be rude. Giving this place one star is too much. I was hopeful for this restaurant because I was so hungry, I was willing to eat anything. The staff were very friendly, and the food was delicious, however, I was appalled at the amount of food we got for the price. We were assured that with two entrees we would have so much food that there definitely would be leftovers. After paying 65 dollars for two entrees, a soup, and two orders of rangoons, we came home to find that the entrees do not come with rice. I have ate at many chinese restaurants, and have NEVER been at a chinese restaurant where rice does not automatically come with the entree, especially when the entree is 25+ dollars. Not only did they not inform us of this, but my husband was left to eat just orange chicken pieces for his dinner. First Wok is my go to restaurant in the area for fresh Chinese food. I give it three and not five stars because my dining in experiences have not been good mainly due to the servers. Plates are forcefully placed in front of you and you are made to feel rushed as you come close to ending your meal. It's like the servers are told to make sure they are getting you through. Got takeout here and when I got home and opened everything, I discovered that we didn't get the eggrolls we ordered, we only got one order of wonton soup and instead of the second wonton soup they gave us egg drop soup. We ordered crab rangoons and there was nothing in them that appeared to be crab, looked like just cream cheese. I ordered shrimp with Chinese vegetables. They used to have really good, big flavorful shrimp. The ones this time were smaller and tough. Since they didn't give us part if our order and gave us one cheaper soup order, I went to look at the receipt to see if we were charged for it. The receipt just has the total and a printed message saying you acknowledge your order was complete. Strange...Ive never known a restaurant that had any reason to print that on their receipts... We paid $62 for one shrimp with Chinese vegetables, one chicken chow mein. 2 soups - one not what we irdered, and an order of crab rangoons. Won't be back. Great food here! We grabbed take out on a Friday night and they did not disappoint! Egg rolls , crab Rangoons, general's chicken and lo mien. Everything was ready in 15 minutes and was hot! The egg rolls were small but tasty. Crisp wrapper filled with veggies and meat. I could eaten just these -they were great! Crab Rangoons-they don't call them that there but - crispy bundles of fried wonton wrapper filled with cream cheese and crab meat. Not my favorite but I am not a cream cheese fan. My companions fought over the last one -they deemed them tasty. The generals chicken was sweet and spicy- watch out for hidden hot pepper bits! Big chunks of breaded chicken covered in sweet brown sauce. Oh so good. We opted for chicken lo mien . It's as you expect it to be.. noodles with veggie bits and a thin coating of sauce. Crab Rangoon isn't pictured but it was good, nice crispy shell with a balanced sweet and sour sauce. I wouldn't eat the wasabi sauce that was also served though; super spicy and bitter, unless you're all about that. Orange chicken had a wonderful sweet glaze and the meat was tender. My boyfriend and I got takeout from here and we were both tremendously disappointed! I ordered the Hunan Combination and he got the Orange Chicken. We also got an order of Crab Cheese (their crab ragoons) which was the best part of the meal. My Hunan combination just lacked flavor overall. His Orange Chicken was incredibly dry, almost inedible (like when you reheat meat for too long in the microwave) and also lacked flavor. The food was salvageable with some soy sauce and Sriracha but when you're paying $16-$18+ per entree it should taste better. I gave them two stars because the portions are big and we had enough for at least 2 meals of leftovers, which is a shame because it wasn't even very good the first time. Always loved this place, our son took us there for mother's day the Friday before. I noticed that the prices have gone up a lot, and when the food was delivered I noticed that the portions were considerably smaller. So that was a double whammy in my opinion. I understand that the prices went up, everything has gone up during the pandemic, but to cut the portions by at least 25 to 30 percent is going too far. The hours of operation on the website did NOT state that First Wok was opening at 4:00 pm on that day. They usually open at 11:00 am on Mondays. I called the restaurant to place an order only to find that the phone kept ringing without an answer or message. I drove to the place only to find a sign on the door saying they opened at 4:00 pm. It is a very poor business practice to not indicate on the website special hours of operation. At the very least, a phone recording should have announced the hours. NOTHING!
