I strongly DO NOT RECOMMEND Gateway Auto Service due to their outrageous pricing and extremely poor business practice. I was quoted $1,834 for a radiator replacement, oil pressure switch, and an oil change. I had already reviewed the estimate beforehand and knew they were charging 6.2 hours of labor at $175/hour which felt extremely inflated for the work being done. For context, I called around to several shops and ended up receiving a quote for $745. When I went in to question the pricing with Nick, the quote suddenly dropped to $1,247. That's a huge difference for the exact same job - 32% to be exact. If there's that much "flex" in the price, it really makes you question how the original number was justified in the first place. At the same time, I was told they don't inflate estimates which didn't line up with what I experienced. The whole interaction felt uncomfortable and undermined my trust in their pricing transparency. read more

These guys are incredible. I was introduced to them by a friend and I still thank them for it. Just this morning, I had an experience with a different company who came to jump my battery. They said that the jump isn't working (tried to convince me that the diagnostic box was the jumper box) and that I have to replace my battery with one of their batteries. My gut told me that they were trying to swindle me, so I called Nick at Gateway and he completely had my back, calmed me down and told me that my instincts were right and recommended that I get it jumped by a different company. He even offered one of their jump boxes. Nick and Gateway saved me from getting ripped off by a seedy company and I so appreciate them. They're friendly, understanding, honest and beyond helpful. I popped in because I had a stuck screw in my license plate frame and had some errands to run in the area. The man working the front desk was extremely respectful and called me to communicate how they were getting the screw out. "Yeah we raised our rates in December" said the girl at the desk (175/hour!!). Without any empathy or apology. And after I signed the credit card slip she handed me a receipt and said "here ya go." No thank you, didn't care if I ever came back. So I won't. Ever. Hope you're happy with your last time payment of $465... versus repeat payments for a reasonable rate. So short sighted. read more

I go there for regular oil changes ($60) because they are walking distance to my house. The last time I went for an oil change they told me I needed all brakes and roaders replaced as well as a tie rod and it would cost $1300. I found another shop that would do the same for $990 cash. TURNS OUT MY BACK BRAKES DIDNT NEED REPLACED AT ALL. The other mechanic said they have 70% of their life left. I'll be saving over $600 going elsewhere. - Specifically performance auto in lake villa (worth the drive). Ask for the cash deal for a better price. Trying to rip off women will lose you business. We do our research and are smarter than you think. Also they don't wear masks amid the COVID crisis. Came on the recommendation of coworker. They took advantage of me and didn't fix the issue. The mechanics at Gateway misdiagnosed the problem and charged me $250 for a new battery I probably didn't need. As a low-income person, that was a huge sacrifice. I am a young woman and he called me honey and sweetie constantly. I felt from the beginning that he wasn't listening to my opinion of the problem. The day after, my car wouldn't start again. So I took it to a small shop on the south side where they charged me less, didn't treat me like a child, and fixed the problem. Sum: These are great, trust worthy mechanics and I will be returning here for any and all repairs. Fair prices as well, as I had gotten quotes on an alternator rebuild from multiple places. They weren't the cheapest, but they weren't the most expensive either. Very reasonable prices and quality work from good people. Long-form: I was looking for a new car shop in the city, since my go-to was currently moving locations and not taking appointments but I needed to get the car inspected right away. I came across Gateway online, called and talked about the issues I was having and he could get me in right away to take a look. That never happens in Chicago, so I figured I'd at least have them inspect it. I explained the sounds and things I had been noticing and we discussed both of our thoughts on what it could be. An hour after I dropped it off they called and explained that my alternator was going out basically and I have a few bearings that needed to be replaced that were causing noise as well. The alternator was my initial guess, so I trusted their opinion and went ahead with the repair. My car was done by 5pm that same day, picked it up after work and the car ran great. 100% better, all noises and symptoms were resolved. I'm leaving this review bc a few days later (today) I got a huge nail in my tire driving home from work on Chicago Ave, drove straight there and arrived at 5:45pm - 15 minutes before they close. Asked if there was anyway they could patch/repair, he took it in right away and patched it, checked all tire pressure and was done with it all without even waiting more than 15 minutes. read more

So I am useless when it comes to cars and unfortunately in the past two weeks I have had one flat tire(thank you Chicago potholes) and a very large dent to the side of the car(some mean person.) I opened a claim with Continental. They referred me to this tire dealer to inspect my tires. Not sure if it's because I'm a woman or a black Woman who drives a Mercedes Benz. But, the service I received from Jeff wasn't good. After inspecting my tires he was suppose to call continental so I could possibly get a pair of new tires at a proration rate since I just bought the car from Mercedes dealership 2 months ago. He could have called them while I waited but he didn't. So two days later I called him for an update. He said he was waiting to hear back from continental. So I called continental and they said he NEVER called them. WHAT A LIAR! I Wouldn't trust them with my car. Thankfully, Continental refererred me to a better tire dealer. I've had Gateway service my vehicle several times and I've been extremely pleased. They are reasonably priced and very helpful at explaining the issue and options available. The location is super accessible for anyone in the Wicker Park / Bucktown area and they have never needed to keep my car more than a couple days to complete repairs. I brought my car in recently because my coolant was leaking all over the place. They ran a diagnostic, filled the coolant tank and ran my car for an hour to check for a leak. It turns out I put the coolant tank cap on wrong and that was causing the entire problem. When checking out I asked how much I owed and they told me they aren't charging me. I thought they would at least want $50 for their time but they insisted it was no charge! read more

Do NOT go there, people. I bought a groupon voucher for oil changes. This voucher also had the prints that you get 10% off on any repair service. I got a quote from them and wanted to have my bake repair. They told me it was a mistake that the voucher printed 10% off. Groupon printed it and they did not agree with the discount... After a few argument back and forth, the guys named Santo finally agree to give me the discount, but he was rude and looking upset. Acting like it was my fault that the voucher had "wrong" print. When I paid for the car, I noticed the 10% off discount was $3 short. I brought that up to him. It was not I minded much about the $3 different (my bill was about $1000). I just wanted to let him know he miscalculated the amount. He got really upset and yelled "you know it is late. I need to go home!! Why are you arguing for 3 dollars...." I reached out to Gateway for info and dropped my car off. Before working on it Steve and his team did an assessment to let me know how much everything would cost as well as another future problem. My immediate problem was front brakes and future was rear. They were friendly and professional. The two services for which I've had the hardest time finding recommendations in Chicago are dentistry and auto repair. Last year, having both several cavities and a transmission problem and in the absence of any other criteria for choosing, I decided to go with the closest providers to my house in both cases. West Town Dental Group did not end up being a good choice (if anybody knows a good dentist...), but Gateway Auto Service have been nothing but wonderful to me. I've gone to them now with a dead battery, a bad transmission, a noisy engine, a failing starter, and general aging car problems. They've either done the work for much less than I was quoted at the dealer or have referred me (in the case of the transmission) to a good specialist who also did the work at a decent price. read more

I've only been here once, but I had two problems that could have been diagnosed expensively (air pressure from heat and brake indicator light on). I am really happy with the service at Gateway Auto. They were reasonable in price, got the job done and everything was explained to me so that I knew what type of work I was getting done and why. I called around a few other places to see if the price was fair and it was better than a lot of the other local mechanics. Since then my 13 year old Buick drives like new. I had purchased a Groupon for oil changes a few months back and aside from that great deal, Santos has been a huge help in keeping me informed of my car issues. Previously, I had been misled on my car's needs by shops that wanted to take advantage of the fact that I am a female. One even drove my car 70 miles and thought I wouldn't notice (Grace). Because I don't know a lot about my car, Santos has taken time on several occasions to explain and show me where problems exist. I appreciate the fact that I have never felt pressure from Gateway to purchase services, I have only been told and shown what work is suggested and why. Gateway Auto Service is great. One of those places you can take your vehicle and rest assured that they wont screw you over. I found about about Gateway on NPR's CarTalk website and after reading positive reviews, took my VW there and it's been the first stop ever since. Jim is super nice and a great guy to have look at your car. I really appreciate the fact that during my last oil change, he noticed one of the bets was starting to show signs of wear but insisted it can wait until the next oil change. I also declined some of the suggested repairs and felt no pressure from them to up sell me. I'm so relieved to have found an auto shop I trust. I've been here twice and have left with my car running nicely and me totally satisfied. Unlike other repairshops where I've left feeling like they ripped me a new one. Both times Gateway knew I didn't have a lot of money to spend, so they took me through a list of things that needed to be done and things that could wait. As in "do this now, but this other thing can probably wait until next season." A couple years ago they gave my '99 Altima a once-over before driving down to NC, and the car ran perfectly the whole way down and back.
